The residents of the Tri-State area are seemingly under siege, in a prison that is virtually locked down until we can come up with something better than Con Edison. Its not their fault that the rates for electricity in general are high (that is a whole 'nother topic - alternative energy?) but they simply aren't reliable. When mother nature gets just a tad angry, thousands of folks are without power. If a power switch failure goes off at any of their satellite locations, it can affect tons (not exaggerating) of folks. I still remember the Queens power outage that lasted as much as two weeks for some folks. People were lining up for ice like it was bread and water during the Depression. Reliability is necessary for any company, but especially a utilities one, be it a local service or a conglomerate like Con Edison. Customer service is also a disaster, people who handle disputes on the phone are some of the most unfriendly folks I've encountered. If there is any positive, its that they allow folks to pay their bills online and access to the full breakdown of individual usage. One of these days we'll be able to break free, but in the meantime, be green to save the earth and money. read more

You make appointments with them , they say they will be there between 8-10am and they never show up, I was up at 7am sitting outside of my house having coffee and they had the nerve to lie and say they were there at 8:20am. Worst company and customer service. read more

This is the LEARNING CENTER for Con Edison. I don't understand why there are such bad reviews. I've been here 3 different times to test for job opportunities. The proctors are very organized & by the book. The building is very clean inside & out. The only thing I didn't like is having to be there to take a test at 7:45am. If your Con Edison bill is too high, maybe you need to change up some things in your household or live by candle light. Complaining on Yelp about a major utility isn't going to change anything. read more

My problem with Con Edison is their loose, error-prone record-keeping system, along with the fact that one department does not know what another department is doing. It is a waste of time speaking to a representative who will give you another phone number to call ad infinitum until you come away without an answer to your question. Regarding my smart meters in a building where I am just a tenant and do not have keys to the electrical room, the smart meters have actually been installed but Con Edison's records indicate otherwise. For months on end I have received threatening letters about the fees I will be charged for not complying with the smart meter requirements. Three months ago I set up an appointment to have an installer come to the property and either install the smart meters or verify that they are already there. That was the earliest appointment I could get. Yesterday a handyman waited around for 5 and 1/2 hours to open the door to the electrical room for the installer. The installer never showed up and Con Edison could not give me any information about what had happened or why. On top of that, I was treated in a matter-of-fact manner and with total lack of respect by the phone representatives. "Well, maybe they were delayed. You can call tomorrow morning and reschedule." No way am I going to have someone wait around for another 5 and 1/2 hours because of an error in Con Edison's records! I took pictures of the units and sent them to an email address I was given by the last representative I spoke with. Whether someone actually does anything to solve the messy record-keeping issue remains to be seen. I will write an update either way. read more

I'm kind of scared to give them less than 3 stars because my electricity may mysteriously stop working when I get back to my apartment next weekend and that would be terrible! They do what they gotta do. Payment processing takes forever but at least you can actually pay with a credit or debit card, unlike the evils up Nawth in Bahston where you have to pay by check or money order ONLY (kill themselves, but that's a different review). They seem to have constant battles with heat, cold, snow, rain, basically any weather condition other than balmy fall or spring days. Pity. You need electricity least of all on those days! read more

I had to call the customer service as we had moved to a new address, again we were placed on hold for 45 minutes- 1 hour. I am not sure if this company is working on improving the customer service. When they have millions of customers calling them everyday I think they should improve the call center system so customers don't have to be placed on hold for an extended period of time. Their self service menu of options is very limited so you end up waiting for representative and its an absolute waste of time. read more

ConEd gets a lot of flak - and I get why everyone is so upset in the other reviews, I do. Plus, I didn't quite get perfect service either - my friends/tenants called ConEd the night before when they had no power, and was told it might have been an issue with the fuse box in the house. I came over to check it out and next day we changed all the fuses (the house is so old, it uses these things that were totally foreign to me called buss fuses!) - no progress. Then my friend calls ConEd again and is told very vaguely that there is an area problem, and it's not our house per se. But she doesn't get good info on what's next. Then out of nowhere we are told we need to let the crew in! No one is there, but I am able to go over. I go over, and the crew then exits the area and I am waiting over 2 hours for something. I call, leave a message, but hey - I get someone when I call again AND I get a call-back when I explain how onerous it is for me to wait. And when the crew arrives - they are very courteous, kind, and caring. They figure out the problem and brainstorm a solution and voila! We have power again! So these stars are for the amazing crew, who are out on lots of emergencies across the city all the time, for keeping it together and getting us power back. It's a tough job, really, so I get how hard it is. read more

I am a homeowner in Brooklyn and scheduled ConEd to read electric meter. Here is the pathetic process they have in place - the appointment window is 7 AM - 5 PM, the technicians do not carry phones so cannot call customer in case not at home, to schedule an appointment they charge $19. What a ripoff. As far as I am concerned this company is ripe for a class action lawsuit! read more

If you like the thought of being at a nightclub every time you use your food processor, again, because the voltage is so weak in your apartment/ then you may like Con Ed. But most importantly, if you are scared for your life, and everyday, fear that your apartment will have an electrical fire because Con Ed refuses to come and do their job- then you may like Con Ed. Con Edison in NYC: apparently they saw a significant increase in our power usage for the winter. because it was so high, they waited a month to make sure it wasn't a fluke and instead of relaying any of this info - they told us they couldn't access the meters and sent us an est. that was 1/6th of the actuality. after 3 months, they determined there was no issue on their end and we indeed are using way more electricity (there was a hidden draft behind the heaters) and sent us a bill for $1600. How is that policy anywhere? To see smoke, and instead of sharing that, send us a laughably low est. only to drop a bill in our laps 3+ months later letting us know, 'turns out, there was definitely 'fire' 3 months ago'. Had we gotten that initial high bill, we would have had time to adjust and discover the structural issue. They are legally allowed to withhold a meter reading from us simply because it spiked and tell us its because they can't access the meters all while giving an unprecedented low-est? read more

I have to say some of the con-edison telephone representatives do not know what they are talking about. Especially some of the senior citizens. They have bad hearing and reject all the questions. I recently opened up an account with them and need a confirmation letter. The girl did my order told me I can call back 2 days later to request that. When I called today, one of the Mr. "sounded old men" answered the phone, he first said he could not hear me, and complained I need to adjust my phone (what the Hell), then when he heard i need the letter, he told me con-edsion doesn't send out confirmation letters, if I want it, I have to go through his supervisor. I think basically he just doesn't know how to pull the new clients record out and order the letter on computer. Gosh, I decided to hang up the phone and try it later due tot he heavy waiting time. Please, con-edison, I know there is non-discrimination law this job market, but please get someone sharp and well trained, or at least test their hearing before putting them on duty.... read more

After Hurricane Sandy hit, we had no power in our home and it's been 11 days without electricity! Who knows when the power will restore.... I understand this was a bad storm, but still.... this was totally inexcusable. Con Ed should have been more prepared for such disaster. i mean as a blue collar worker and dealing with the public, its gotta be really hard to do whatever it is they do. i've seen these guys/girls working in the street busting there butts, and civilians would still approach them about stupid crap. why are you taking a break? why is my bill high? hahaha like me i am a verizon worker, i dont know why the bill is high, dam i pay the same rate as the next person does. and im sure its the same with con ed. its the higher upper vp's and gm's that need to go. jus' like in any business. when i see any utility worker in the heat i ask them if they want a beer or sandwich. i mean they are human jus' like we are. i should go to a token clerk in the train station and ask them why is the rate of metro cards going up...unreal. read more
