We are long time Concord customers who asked them to re-issue a holiday gift certificate. The gift certificate never arrived in the mail and when we asked the store to cancel and re-issue it, store management said they would not do that. Considering that we often shopped there once a week, this is very poor customer service. The store seems understaffed and their service has deteriorated. read more

I go out of my way to purchase from The Concord Bookshop rather than Amazon or B&N. Great curated selection of books, staged in categories around the store making it easy for gift shopping. Staff is very knowledgeable, especially the man with glasses and bow tie who can make recommendations that always work. I also use the online feature and pick up my purchases at the childrens desk so no waiting in line. Their selection of NY Times cards is the best for birthday greetings. The calendar selection is also great for gifting to those of us who still write our appointments on a wall calendar. read more

I ordered two signed Wicked books and they unfortunately arrived damaged with a bent cover on one and a dinged spine on the other. They were sent in a plastic shipping bag instead of a box which would have been more protective. The store would not pay for return shipping and it was difficult to work with them. read more

In an age of "super book stores" (Barnes & Noble and the like) and online retailers, the Concord Bookshop reminds us what a book store is SUPPOSED to be: local, great location, filled with a knowledgeable and friendly staff who takes the time to get to know you, hosts authors and events on a regular basis, offers a wide range of books (and what they don't have they'll find for you) at an even wider range of price points and is a pillar in the community (the bookshop has been around since 1940)! I really can't say enough about this shop other than because of the aforementioned it's the ONLY place I'm buying books from...from here on and I plan to become a fixture in the place. I've yet to walk out of the store with only 1 book, usually it's at least 2 or 3 EVERY TIME I stop by. Go in and see for yourself, I promise you won't be disappointed. read more

Great selection of many books tastefully displayed along with some magazines and cards. Staff are knowledgeable but scarce. Wait times to check out were long. There is free parking and also restrooms nearby at the visitor's center. Masks are optional. This is a serious store without a bunch of unrelated merchandise like you find at the big chain. Sometimes I think I'm one of the only people left who isn't reading books via a Kindle or iPad or listening to books through Audible. I just love holding a book in my hands and turning its pages. I also love that no flight attendant has ever told me to switch off and put away a novel (important because I ride on a lot of airplanes). A couple weeks ago at the beginning of a trip I bought two books and promptly forgot them on my bedside table so when I spotted the Concord Bookshop I came in hoping for a literary fix. I quite enjoyed The Elephant Vanishes by Japanese author Haruki Murakami and had freshly finished another short story of his from the New Yorker fiction issue so I was happy to find After the Quake without much searching. During my short time in the shop people kept coming in looking for lost family members (the place is pretty cavernous) and the staff told me that the bookshop is quite the meeting place in this small, historic Massachusetts town. I'm glad places like the Concord Bookshop still exist. read more

What a wonderful bookstore in Concord. I went to an author event and it was fun (I saw Andre Dubus III speak about his new book). The store has a lot of interesting books and gift items. The staff is very courteous and knowledgeable. It's the perfect place to stop while in Concord to pick out something good to read. I was so excited to visit the Concord Bookshop...a real bookstore! I left extremely disappointed and empty handed. There is a sign at the entrance requesting customers to buy items they see in the store (as opposed to finding something there and then going home and buying it on Amazon) so that they can stay in business. I would have been happy to do that had I walked in to a welcoming, clean and comfortable environment where I wanted to spend some time - but pretty much the opposite is what I experienced. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was all of the stains on the carpet. Everywhere. It was gross. I would not have wanted to get on the floor to browse lower shelves. The second thing...not only was I *not* greeted in any way when I entered, I instead got to listen to two ladies (an employee and a customer) discussing how victims should be glorified and lifted up while criminals/offenders are ignored and not given their 15 minutes (which I happen to agree with, but not what I wanted to listen to while browsing books), followed by the problems for women in modern society and the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision. I stopped in the middle of the store to check my phone for a minute and noticed I had no cell phone service. At all. And no WiFi available. I guess that's one way to keep people from buying online while in your store. Made to the back part of the store, where I was finally greeted by an employee. Briefly. At the same time I noticed that all of the books on the top shelves of "Drama" and "Theater" were COVERED in spider webs. Note to owners or management: if you want people to buy in your store instead of online, maybe you should clean the carpets and dust your shelves so people will want to stay and browse awhile. read more

I'm new-ish to Concord and while I used to live in Medford, close enough to walk to Porter Square, this place isn't far off. All the new big titles you'd want, a great selection of art books, and also a good conscience in terms of displays celebrating Black culture and more. Staff is friendly and the couple times I've special-ordered, the books have appeared within a couple days. Warm, personal service from people who really love books and love to see their customers find great reads. They offer good "reader advice" if you want and will chat with you about your selections when you check out. I like having intelligent, well-read staff there. They always have a fascinating range of offerings in all genres and quick special-order service for anything not in stock. They'll tell me to expect it in 2-3 days but it often arrives overnight--just as fast as online while still supporting locally-owned commerce. Very strong selection of biography, history, current affairs, magazines, and children's books. They do a great job highlighting local authors and titles of local interest. There are always some bargain books on display in varied genres, too. Highly recommended! read more

This is without doubt one of the finest independent bookshop I've visited in years. Huge beautifully curated selection, wonderful, book-loving staff who are anxious to discuss (gasp) books, a whole section of NYRB books (I bought 2) and nothing there just because it sells. I was there for a happy hour but could have spent most of the day. Thank god someone still cares about books. This is a really nice book store. There's a great Horticultural and Gardening section. The Kid's Section is enormous. The layout is good, and the staff is friendly. There's some discount tables set up, and I usually find something I want on them. The magazine section tends to be skewed to the sort of magazines you'd find in Concord. You aren't going to find Outlaw Biker, for instance. What's not to like? read more

I LOVE this store. I enjoy giving just the right book as a present and when I need to ask the staff in the children's/YA section for advice I know the recipient is going to love their choice. I cannot imagine trying to do this at a a big store or Amazon, I'd just end up with whatever they're pushing. They have a great selection and always-changing displays to inspire you, again chosen by actual readers not some publisher's algorithm. Of course if you know what you want and they don't have it they'll order it for you, chat with you about it when it comes in (if you are so inclined) and wrap it in beautiful paper if you want--so with the free shipping and wrapping it ends up being the same price as Amazon or the big box store (if the latter even carried the book) and you get to come to Concord center and browse and chat with nice people. read more

Very quaint and extensive bookstore! Amazing history section, which is in line with its historical location in Concord. I appreciated the staff picks throughout the store and the numerous displays including the author of the month. My only complaint is the rather distant store clerks. Walk your kid to the back of this place and enjoy sitting down to read. They have some large stuffed animals in the back for the kid to play with. I really like this place but like any independent book shop in this age, prices are higher here than online or at a discount book seller. I would love to get coffee and come in here and read. This is a great independent bookstore. I went here for a book reading by Erin Morgenstern's of her book "The Night Circus". They had good sized area set-up for the reading, and carefully thought out red, black, and white snacks which was a fun touch. Nice selection of books, great location in a beautiful town. I seriously just got a Yelp account to review this store. I found it by accident, on my way to the toy store once when I was going to get a present for my son's friend's birthday party. I've been there twice now. Each time, I've gone to get a present for a kid's birthday. I am so impressed with this store because 1. They have an excellent selection of children's books -- and a place to read them! 2. They have the most helpful staff I've ever encountered: not in your face, just people who love books. 3. Both times I've gone, my two-year-old has been...less than perfect. And the staff handled it so graciously. They joked with me about her instead of making me feel even more guilty than I already did. 4. Because of the staff, I have gotten books that the kids actually loved, and that I never, ever would have found myself on Amazon. 5. They gift wrap! I can't recommend this place enough. I went in here with my kids while exploring Concord for the first time and am I glad I did. What a charming, lovely bookstore, with a friendly and helpful staff. One of the first things you see when you walk in is a whole shelf of greeting cards with old New Yorker cartoons on them. That was the first win. As I was looking at those, my kids wandered off to find the sections of their interest and one of the employees greeted me pleasantly and asked if there was anything she could help me find. I wasn't really planning on book shopping that day, but I there are a few books I've been meaning to pick up and I figured why not. I was impressed by the employee's librarian-level knowledge of the titles I mentioned. I found my kids reading away, and my oldest mentioned that another of their employees had helped her find something. I love places that understand not all kids are terrors-in-public and treat them like potential customers too. We ended up walking away with 3 books, two for the kids. There was one title they didn't have in stock but they offered to order it for me. I'm not sure when next I'll be in Concord so I declined but I appreciated their willingness, and the kind of service you can only find when interacting with a helpful, knowledgeable and friendly person. read more
