Another piece is made of cookies. You can truly never go hungry here. Bear in mind, in order to access this museum room, one must enter a residential-looking building, climb a short ladder of stairs, and make his way into the room, where one will be greeted by a worker, who will enlighten you with upcoming exhibitions or events in the area. Cernuda Arte feels less like a gallery and more like a quiet refuge for the mind. Walking through…read morethe space, you're surrounded by powerful modern and Latin American works, but the piece that always pulls me in is the Meditation tropical jungle picture installation. There's something about standing in front of it that instantly slows everything down. The sun poring through the leaves. The simplicity, the balance, the silence it creates, it almost feels like the artwork is inviting you to pause for a moment. I found myself just staring at it, letting the calm and tranquility take over. The gallery itself is beautifully curated, with a clean and thoughtful layout that lets each piece breathe. Just the tip toe noise on the wooden floor makes me chill every time I walk through it. It's the kind of place where you don't rush; you wander, reflect, and connect with the art in your own way. It is free to access and all the personnel is nice and attentive. If you're in Coral Gables and looking for a moment of peace mixed with inspiring contemporary art, Cernuda Arte is definitely worth stepping into.

I got an evite for an opening event at Basel and found it wasn't. Although off the beaten path from the traditional gallery walk, it can make a walk all its own. There are two stories of artists there, a lot of whom you can talk to about their work, including my personal favorite - Daniel Fila, the creator of the "J-Lo Mural" off 36th & Biscayne. (If you've driven by you know what I'm talking about) Add to that the whole old-building ambiance and the chance to see old structure (huge bolted trusses and expose I-beams) and you're in heaven as a true art lover. Oh, and by the way, a couple of the artists have said that it is haunted ;).

The friendliest art gallery…read more Virginia Miller opened her first gallery in 1974 in Coconut Grove with at first mostly local art but soon expanded to Cuban, Latin American and even some Chinese artist. She moved her gallery to Coral Gables in the early 80's and was a major factor in starting the first monthly gallery nights in greater Miami. That's right folks, Wynwood didn't start shyt. Virginia is extremely approachable as is her husband and they usually have the artist in house to answer any and all questions. The latest artist that was showing here was Leslie Lew. She shared with the Yibbies a story behind a painting she did in the early 80's while she lived above a botanica on Broadway. Let me repeat that. A botanica I'm the middle of Manhattan on Broadway. Times have changed. If you do happen to come by on a First Friday know that they will have some kind if white wine, never red. Red spills where you least expect it.
