By that point, we had already watched other tables receive their food, including people who had arrived well after us. We continued waiting, and after roughly 40 minutes or more, our food still had not arrived. At that point, the dining experience was already ruined and we decided to leave. Ironically, just as we were getting ready to go, the food finally started coming out. I told them we no longer wanted it. The waiter did apologize again and offered us a pizza to take with us, which I assume was complimentary, but by then we were simply ready to leave. Even paying the bill became unnecessarily drawn out. We were charged the full amount for the salad, beer, and wine. I sat with a $50 bill ready to pay, was handed the check, and then ended up standing around for another five minutes waiting for someone to actually take the money. There was no apology from the person handling the payment. I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciated that our waiter admitted he had forgotten to place the order. But when a restaurant makes that kind of mistake, the recovery matters. After waiting that long, watching later-arriving customers get served, and then having difficulty simply paying and leaving, an apology and a pizza at the very end didn't really fix the experience. Although we were seated quickly - again other than two other tables we were the only customers there. It was filling up as we were leaving - afternoon early bird time. Would I go there again? The portions are generous and every dish we tried was great. The mozzarella in carozza was easily one of the most indulgent things I have ever eaten. I'm going to have a slice at La Casa Bella. Walking in at noon, I have the place to myself. Nothing fancy at La Casa Bella, the restaurant looks like a typical New York pizza joint. There are people coming in to pick up whole pies. First time here I'm going in with their famous Vodka slice & Grandma Sicilian slice. The people behind the counter are nice, we all start chatting about the neighborhood (I won't tell them I live in Stony Brook) I grab a soda and take the table by the window. First bite of the Vodka slice, all I can say is wow! Luckily, they were able to fit us in since we came early, but by 7p, it was a full house. We started off the calamari ($25), which was absolutely delicious. I prefer my calamari lightly breaded as I feel it prevents the breading from falling off. it was not too oily, and the calamari was tossed in an herby seasoning which by itself was fantastic. But, I highly recommend adding the fried cherry peppers and spicy cherry pepper sauce as the vinegary tartness will wake your taste buds up. For our entrées, we ordered the linguine di mare ($36), the eggplant parm ($21), and the porky pasta ($32) from the specials menu. The pasta were all cooked perfectly al dente and had a chewy, bouncy texture that was indicative of fresh pasta being used. I particularly enjoyed the porky pasta, which had braised ossobuco and crumbled sweet sausage in a red sauce-- it is bolder in taste compared to the linguine and the sauce is perfect for mopping up your bread with. This is not the say the linguine di mare was not good, as it had a very subtle natural sweetness from all the seafood. The eggplant parm also was a group favorite of the evening, with meaty slices of eggplant that melted in my mouth, sandwiched in between tons of cheese and marinara. I particularly appreciated that the eggplant wasn't breaded and that it also came with a side salad so it still felt somewhat healthy. The portions are very generous at Cavatappi, but we made sure to make stomach space for the cheesecake ($12) at our dining neighbor's recommendation-- they swore it was the best cheesecake around. I personally am not a huge cheesecake person, but I did enjoy it and found it milkier in flavor and lighter in texture compared to Junior's version. Overall, I really loved the food and service at Cavatappi and will definitely be returning in the near future. PS- There is a slight discount if you pay in cash!
