Spumoni Gardens is one of those places where I already know I'm not leaving with just one thing. The Sicilian slice is DIVINE. Thick, cheesy, saucy, crispy around the edges, and just completely different from a regular slice of pizza. This is the thing I'm coming here for first. Then there are the homemade frozen treats. I've had both the Italian ices and the ice cream, in more flavors than I can even remember at this point, and I genuinely can't tell you which one I like better. Every time I think I've picked a favorite, I try another flavor and change my mind. LOL. There's something very old-school Brooklyn about the whole experience too. It's not trying to be trendy or reinvent itself. It knows exactly what it is, and that's part of why people keep coming back. We chose L&B Spumoni Gardens because of the strong reviews and because it seemed to be one of the more popular places in the area. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered a glass of wine, a beer, an arugula salad, and our main food order. Everything started out fine, and the salad came without a problem. But then we waited. And waited. About 30 minutes after we had ordered, I asked our waiter where our food was. He apologized and admitted that he had forgotten to put the order in. By that point, we had already watched other tables receive their food, including people who had arrived well after us. We continued waiting, and after roughly 40 minutes or more, our food still had not arrived. At that point, the dining experience was already ruined and we decided to leave. Ironically, just as we were getting ready to go, the food finally started coming out. I told them we no longer wanted it. The waiter did apologize again and offered us a pizza to take with us, which I assume was complimentary, but by then we were simply ready to leave. Even paying the bill became unnecessarily drawn out. We were charged the full amount for the salad, beer, and wine. I sat with a $50 bill ready to pay, was handed the check, and then ended up standing around for another five minutes waiting for someone to actually take the money. There was no apology from the person handling the payment. I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciated that our waiter admitted he had forgotten to place the order. But when a restaurant makes that kind of mistake, the recovery matters. After waiting that long, watching later-arriving customers get served, and then having difficulty simply paying and leaving, an apology and a pizza at the very end didn't really fix the experience. My husband absolutely raved about this place! I always love discovering the different spots he's been to around New York because he truly loves NY. He's a true New Yorker at heart--and apparently has a whole list of places I need to try! They have outdoor seating, but we went during the winter, and my husband knows me well. I'd much rather enjoy my pizza cozy and warm at home! The pizzas here are HUGE squares and absolutely packed with sauce. I vaguely remember there being an interesting bit of history behind their sauce, but I can't quite recall the story. Whatever the history, the sauce definitely stood out! We definitely ordered way too much. We got just two pies, but somehow ended up with enough pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for days. We had to make sure everyone was eating--and even our neighbors got some! These pizzas can seriously feed a crowd. Two pies, so many people, and somehow still leftovers. This is unacceptable. I've called twice now about bread being tossed directly into the bag with my entrées, unwrapped, this is a serious sanitation concern that needs to be addressed. I grew up going to L&B, loved their pizza and was so excited to introduce it to others. Brought my extended family here for a graduation celebration meal and was so embarrassed by how bad this world famous pizza is. The dough in the pie was raw and inedible. The sauce was the cheap cloyingly sweet kind. It was all wrong. Nobody wanted to finish their slice. But honestly it wasn't just the pizza. Everything we ordered was subpar. Dishes are heavy on overcooked pasta with too much sauce and light on actual meat. Everything is oily or over sauced. I've been eating L&B Spumoni Gardens for as long as I can remember, and it remains exactly what it's supposed to be: loud, crowded, unpretentious, completely its own thing, and ridiculously good. The square slice is the square slice. Sauce on top, cheese underneath, crispy edges, soft center. Don't overthink it. Get one. Then realize you should have gotten two. The sit-down food is classic Brooklyn Italian comfort food, the portions are generous, and obviously you finish with the spumoni. This isn't precious food and it isn't trying to impress anybody. The spumoni was nice on a summer hot day. I got the small and it was the perfect size after two slices. Creamy, cold, and the layered flavors actually stood out, pistachio, chocolate, and vanilla. Third stop on my quest for the best NY pizza and I can officially say that so far, they're my #1. There are two lines outside, one for spumoni and one for pizza. Both lines moved quickly as the staff efficiently handled the crush of people out for their Sunday evening with family and friends. Tables were full, so I recommend you have two people. One to stand in line to order and the other holding a table. We got lucky, a table opened up right before we placed ours. We only wanted the Sicilian, what some call the "upside down" pizza. We chose one of each kind of slice: corner, middle, edge. The man at the counter seemed impressed that we knew our stuff (we take our pizza research seriously!!) We were served immediately after ordering because the pies are constantly coming out of the oven to feed the masses. The best possible way to get a slice, ripping hot fresh off the pie After letting it come down from its lava-like temperature, I was rewarded with three slices of heaven. Salty, piquant, bold: the sauce is everything. It sings loudly and I was a rapt listener. The crust was crunchy on the outside, a soft interior and a bit of chew. There's a kind of organized chaos, a beautiful alchemy in the movement here. People in line shuffle forward as others emerge, boxes in hand. Just when you think every red table is claimed, a family stands up, and a spot miraculously opens. It's a dance that always seems to work out. Out comes the box--foil-lined, warm to the touch. Inside, thick Sicilian slices, perfectly squared-off, sit waiting, their surface glistening red. The crust hits first. It crunches at the edge, then softens, then melts. It's layered like that: crisp, pillowy, delicious. It stands out straight but gives way with a little pressure. Not greasy. Not dry. Just right. You can see the char along the bottom edges, a testament to a great bake. Then you taste the sauce. Bright. Salty. Savory. Thick enough to carry incredible flavor without drowning the crust. It owns the slice though. You almost forget there's cheese underneath, acting like a great offensive lineman, holding everything together and keeping the crust from getting soggy while the sauce gets to be the star. I noticed that the last 2 times I came, they sneakily upsold me pizza when I ordered to go. 1 time hubby wanted to try their round regular slice as we never had it. L&B Supumoni is known for their amazing Sicilian square pizza. So we decided to order 1 round slice, and 3 square Sicilian slices. They charged me for 2 round slices (see pic) which i wouldn't know as they only give you credit card slipt but no actual receipt (who usually give receipt at pizzerias?) But it would be nice to see itemized receipt with the credit card receipt. Typically, you just order at the window and pay whatever amount they spew out at you. They usually ask "square or round" as that is the easier way for they to ask which pizza do you want. But you don't know the full price unless you do the math yourself (I wouldn't be able to math if I get a few drinks as well). And these days, with credit card fees and such, you can't really do all the math. Luckily they dont have the extra fees here (I think). Recently came here over the weekend and asked for 4 middle Sicilian square slices. Saw the credit card receipt for $20 and was confused... thought maybe it was the credit card fee... until later when they handed me a box of 5 and said "5 sqaures" while looking directly at me. You can say maybe they didn't hear me but I always stick my fingers out as I say the numbers (4 fingers in this recent visit). I said, "hii, can I get 4 (with 4 fingers) square slices all middle please". I like middle while my husband like side but not corner as too much crust. Last time I ordered the side, he said it was a corner so he wanted middle like this time. There was one additional time (but a long while ago) where I had ordered 4 square slices late at night (about 45min before closing) and they said they had a box of 6... but they said it'll be a wait so I said fine I'll take it... I guess they already had it in the box waiting to give to next person and didnt want to take 2 out. It wasn't hot but I did heated it up at home. I do appreciate the fresh hot pizza and great taste but they keep extra charging me (and yes, giving me the extra slices) but I don't want that many. I think its the same person also. Suggestion: have a computer screen facing customers that shows the itemized stuff so you know what you ordering/paying. Because the person at the window doesn't repeat the order. I ate it almost right away to try it fresh but holy cow what a let down.... the crust was slightly soft and I dont know if it was cause they had it sitting in the box ready to go the moment someone ordered it, but you can tell it was sitting for a bit before it came to my hands. The sauce.... I mean it was only ok.... it became a mess to eat because it caused the pizza to be soft and limp which pretty much kept falling off onto my plate. I had prince street pizza which was a lot more memorable as the dough/crust was a perfectly crisp. To conclude, flavor of the Sicilian pizza, I expected more. All I tasted was dough. The sauce i wish permeated more into the pizza but no.... all I tasted was dough and a layer of sauce that got cut out due to the amount of soggy dough that was with it... I went to L&B Spumoni Gardens late at night after checking out the Dyker Heights Christmas lights. It was freezing out, but we got seated right away in the back patio. The heater back there was blasting honestly so hot it had me sweating, but I'm not complaining. I came for the pizza, plain and simple. I ordered the Hot Sicilian slice and it was great. Thick crust, plenty of sauce, exactly what you expect when you come here. I wanted to try the vodka slice too, but they only do that as a whole pie, and I wasn't in the mood to take down an entire pizza, so I switched it up. I ended up getting the Shrimp Parmigiana hero in vodka sauce and started with the fried calamari. The calamari was really good and crispy, not greasy. The hero was solid, big portion, definitely hits if you want something heavier than pizza. For the kid, we ordered the mac and cheese off the kids menu. I tried it and it was actually really good, but I will say $17 for a huge bowl of mac and cheese for a toddler feels a little steep. We finished the night with a cone of spumoni, and honestly that was the highlight for the family. Everybody loved it; simple, old-school, and exactly how it should be. Overall, it was a great experience. The staff was attentive, polite, and easygoing, which makes a big difference.
