If you're looking to take a breather from the heat and rides definitely check out the Coney Island Museum. For $5 you get to to see some cool artifacts and learn about the history of Coney. It's small so definitely don't plan on spending the day there. But if your visiting definitely check out the sideshow. I wished they allowed photos. Nice spot. 1) This is the oddest museum ever. Old and cracking, plus very small. 2) However, do not come for just the museum, I will recommend come here on a Sunday when they have magic show. Coney Island Museum is put together by old-school Coney Island people who saw with their own eyes how the neighborhood and the amusements have changed. There's a bar on the ground floor (proof of tax required), a "freak show" (sword swallowing, bed of nails, mermaid belly dancing, and so on), and exhibits about the history of the amusement district. The Sunday magic show hosted at the Coney island museum was a pleasant surprise. The show is a real throw back, recommended for kids 6+ and for adults. It was a nice surprise how entertaining I found the performances. The kids really liked it too. The show my family and I attended was magical, a good length and had some really amazing "OMG how did he do that" moments. The host mentioned at the end that the performers vary week to week. $5for kids/$10 for adults. read more

It was my pleasure to attend a magic show unlike any other, Magic at Coney. There certainly was a strong homage to the "good old days" running not only through the show, but also the physical setting, since this intimate show is housed within the small but informative Coney Island Museum. Affordable good clean family fun with lots of opportunities for kids and adults to join in on the magic make this show worth a couple of hours of your time. Sure, many of us may know or guess how some of the tricks are done, but nothing beats the added twists, humor and information each magician added to make each performance unique. (Not only can I say egg in Japanese but I also know Houdini's birth name.) Step into a simpler time and a simpler world and allow the child in you to experience the wonder. I came because I needed to laugh and smile and this show definitely delivered. read more

Entry fee to this museum is 99 cents, which is not quite worth it for the two small rickety rooms of gimcracks on show, but is certainly a bargain for a line-less and moderately clean bathroom that you are only allowed to use if you buy a ticket. I'm not saying that the stuff on exhibition isn't cool, only that it's kind of what you would expect to see in a touristy little shop that would not charge admission. I went to Coney Island on a hot weekend day in the summer, where it's always so crowded that finding a bathroom is a huge production. After stopping in some random stores to beg for bathroom use (as a girl, I've never had trouble getting permission for this sort of thing, but the owner of the furniture liquidator didn't seem to care about my needs), my friend and I stumbled on this museum. While I waited for her to get out of the bathroom, I took a tour of the place--that's how small it is. Anyway, because no one goes there, it was a nice respite from the packs of flesh down on the street. read more

This museum was almost a waste of 99 cents. It was dirty and hot as hell (no ac, no fan, no open window on a day where it was 95 outside). However, you do get to see a little piece of history and that is a a movie of Thomas Edison electrocuting an elephant trying to prove that his ac electricity was way better than dc. Luckily it's only $1.00 for admission, but the most you're going to get out of it is a big ass industrial fan to cool you off from the summer heat that's waiting for you inside. We got married at the museum. It was amazing. So fun and we really felt like we just got to be ourselves and with our friends and family to celebrate in this fun, eclectic and comfortable space. The Coney Island USA team was awesome! The museum space was perfect for our quirky, semi-casual wedding and the Freak Bar downstairs is such a great place for a party. We also utilized the small theater attached to the bar and booked a Side Show! Patrick and the rest of the staff at Coney Island USA really came through and helped to make our event so special. The museum had all the furniture needed for our event, including the ceremony. The Freak Bar, where most guests chose to spend time in during the party has a mix of comfortable seating and the space has that hard to categorize quality that makes for a great party atmosphere. In general, it's just a great place to party. We booked two performers from the Sideshow to give a surprise performance during the reception and it was Awesome! It's the opposite of a corporate place in so many ways, not just in its theme as a purveyor of all things Coney Island and weird, and I can see how that might make some couples nervous. When we booked, we were simply put on their internal calendar with a handshake agreement that we had the spaces we wanted on the date in question. I can see how it would be difficult or even risky to do that if you had a lot of additional vendors and big guest list and had to lay out a lot in deposits elsewhere. Our event didn't have too many moving parts, but once we were finally ready with our caterer and had planned more details for the day-of, Patrick was very responsive and answered all of our inquiries about space, measurements, etc. Our other vendors were able to visit the site and meet with staff at the museum as well to discuss logistics. Info about space rental and prices is also very transparent on their website, which is a lovely change from most venues. For 99 cents, I'd say it's worth a stop on your way from the bumper cars to the Wonder Wheel. Full of weird little memorabilia and other stuff from the glory days of Coney Island. Major props to the cafe on the first floor of the building for having a vegan sandwich in an area notoriously bereft of veg options. read more

Tonight I came down for the mermaid miss Coney Island pageant and there was nothing about pre-sales or reserve ration of tickets on your website. We came a very long way to be told that you guys are sold out and there is no way for us to get in. What makes me really upset is when you guys were struggling I was the person filling in those seats and really helping you guys out financially supporting your back and then once you got it up and running you turn your back towards the people who really supported you . I took my children and my husband to this magic show on Saturday these people were amazing I could not believe how well they interact with the children and the adults I would love to go back very soon and I recommend anybody young old go check it out these guys are amazing from the beginning to the end and the intermission they have so many things about the history of the island is just beautiful so if anybody is considering to go just go you will not be disappointed read more

I love Coney Island and the museum. This review is for MAGIC AT CONEY. I was excited to bring my daughter. The show I attended was horrifically misogynist when the emcee sexually harassed an audience member for laughs. He casually asked her to lick an envelope, and then went on to make comments about the sexual pleasure he got from imagining her tongue. The first comment was disgusting enough, and then he brought it up again later. I'm not a puritan -- I love burlesque and bawdy humor, but this crossed a major line and the way he made the audience member feel was demeaning -- she could not have known when she volunteered that she was being set up for that kind of harassment. I was honestly horrified and felt ashamed to be there participating in something so awful. In this day and age, there is just no place for this anymore. There are plenty of ways to achieve humor, even bawdy or sexual humor, that are friendly and funny and consensual, and this was not one of them. Otherwise, the magic shows were mixed--one was amazing, several were way too slow, rambling, and boring for the kiddos in the audience. read more

the gemstone of coney island. the mecca of cool/weird in brooklyn is not in some trendy bushwick hood but has been in coney island for decades. the original freakshow on the boardwalk was much fun and friendly if you were a punk in the 90s and when it moved to surf ave it grew into its own subculture of carnies, oddballs, retro entertainers and new york history re-enactors, a living slice of old 1900 brooklyn morphed with rock n roll and burlesque. Watch the live theater show, hang and have a locally brewed beer, view the amazing local artwork, shop in the most subversively adorable giftshop in the city, check out the museum exhibits and talk the charming regulars, you might learn a few things. read more

It's a small museum with memorabilia salvaged from Coney Island back in the day. What I absolutely loved were the videos that detailed the history of Coney Island. So much fun, the machines are so cool and have that authentic Coney Island vibe, makes you feel like a kid again! Can't beat 99 cents for admission. You'll spend more on skeeball in 2 minutes. Not much to look at (you'll be done in 10 minutes, a little longer than a couple more rounds of skeeball) but apparently they have some live entertainment/speakers sometimes. It's old looking, dusty, dark with only a big old fan (which ironically blends in perfectly) and a penny flip-motion dealie that shows an elephant being electrocuted (machine and execution were invented by Edison; how's that for self-promotion). For couch potatoes that would rather see it on TV then take 30 seconds to walk around the 2 rooms, there is a flatscreen tv/dvd showing for your enjoyment. read more

New Year's Magic Show was sort of astounding. Four magicians, all pretty great. Each one had us shaking our heads. Can't speak to the museum itself but the show was worth the trip there. I'm a little surprised by the negativity of some of the other reviews on here. I love this museum. It's not a large, big-budget place, but it serves it purpose well. I think the historical status of the building (I believe it used to be one of the Childs Restaurants) adds to the enjoyment of the artifacts from Coney Island's heyday. I enjoyed seeing the steeplechase horse, as well as the old signs and parts of other rides. They have the Ric Burns Coney Island documentary playing, which is definitely worth viewing. The staff is friendly, and you can't beat the price of 99 cents. read more
