Like anything else in the world, pumpkins have origins. There was once a time in history when pumpkins did not look and taste like how they do today. Native Americans were already growing pumpkins even before the Europeans arrived in the country. After their arrival, they also learned about this versatile plant and started adopting it. The Europeans used them as the main ingredient in various dishes and meals, including soups, stews, and the widely famous pumpkin pie. It's that time of year when one can't think of anything more quintessentially autumn than hopping on a hayride, cutting a fresh pumpkin from its stem, and bringing it home to carve, which is why my partner and I came this Saturday afternoon to Conklin Farm U Pick, located on the corner of Vreeland Avenue and River Road in Montville. Upon arrival, we were guided by the staff to their organized spacious parking lot. This much simpler, relaxed, family-run and operated farm offers a little bit of everything. The ground is a decent size for everyone, from regular and haunted hayrides and train rides to picking your own pumpkins at 85 cents a pound and the purchase of mini apple cider donuts, pies, and apple cider drinks. The crowds were manageable. There was an authentic pumpkin patch with vines and pumpkins attached to the earth! Parking and entrance were free with friendly staff, and the price was reasonable. We had a great time here and will definitely visit it again. read more

This is a cute little spot for pumpkin picking. It's conveniently located in Montville and has a large grass parking lot. I would give this five stars, but felt it was a bit overpriced. For instance, the haunted hay ride was $15 per person. The haunted hay ride wasn't too scary, and it was pretty fun, but it lasted less than 10 minutes. I think we spent more time waiting for the ride to begin than the ride itself. The folks who dressed up to scare us did a really great job and I hope they are compensated appropriately. It's nice that they offer a day time haunted hay ride which is pretty hard to find (we have looked extensively for my nephew who loves scary things). They should advertise this more. They have mini apple cider donuts for $7 and you get a dozen. These were so small and lacked flavor, it was disappointing because I dearly love apple cider donuts. I think because there wasn't much sugar on them. I was also going to get a small white pumpkin but Trader Joe's has them for cheaper. My nephew got a large pumpkin and I used a wheel barrow to push it around (only adults can use them). They weighed it for price and it was about $15. Again, I feel like we could have done better with the prices. This place is nice if you live close by and don't want to drive far. Staff were very nice and my nephew did have a good time. They have a regular hay ride which we didn't do, but looked fun! This place is perfect for the little ones as it's not too big. They do have a wide selection of different pumpkins including greens ones (which may be a gourd and not a pumpkin, but all the same). I was impressed by the variety. Lots of pumpkins, Lots and lots, plenty of free parking, lots of places to get a photo (family with the kids etc.) & cool fall stuff (pies $20 es, corn stalks, cider, apples etc.). There is the Hay Ride (I call it the bumpy ride) and on weekends the Haunted Hay Ride. Some farm animals and some games a bit of food and drink too. That's all the good news. I went on a Sunday (about 2p). We went on Sunday last year too. The crowd was over the top. The pumpkins 85 cents a pound which means a nice medium pumpkin is on the order of $21 to $25 ($5 at Trader Joes). The Hay rides, haunted and regular are $15 and $5pp respectively. It seems the farm family has taken a page from the Disney playbook (and not a good one). What a great little gem in the heart of Montville, NJ. Literally 4 minutes from my house you can't go wrong (especially with kids and nap times - closer is better). This place has all the highlights of a typical Chester area farm - pumpkin picking, "How Tall This Fall" sign and photo op, apple cider and donut hut, corn maze. Just beware this place isn't too big and gets super crowded on the weekend afternoons so if you want to avoid that aim for a weekday or weekend morning! But definitely worth a visit. read more

I'm not sure why this particular farm has a 4 star average, I had very much expected a lot more out of a farm the bougie North Jersey Area. First off, their "pumpkin patch" is a bunch of pre-picked pumpkins that have been thrown into a weedy bushy area for you to "pick out" yourself. Not even attached to the vine. When I googled this farm, my specific key search was "pick your own," so I obviously was not impressed. They had a couple of goats that you weren't allowed to feed, crammed into a small, shallow cage (which is a shame because there was a lot of unused space that they could've been roaming around it) and a hayride to nowhere which circled the farm and came back. Their "corn maze" was for toddlers and parents only and looked pretty lack luster from the outside. Their small farmers market, if you could call it that, had small pumpkins and gourds and some apple butter. All things that you can get at Walmart. Overall I should just stayed in Pennsylvania and not even bothered to stop on my way home this weekend. read more

We tried their cider donuts and they were very good.. although not the traditional size donuts. The apple cider drinks were good as well but the label reference another farm.. I'm a fan of Conklin Farms! I haven't explored all of the farm and activities because we usually hit up the farm after a nice hike at Pyramid Mountain so we are a bit tired. My main goal at Conklin Farms is to grab a bag of their delicious, delicious donut holes. If there is a line to buy some, definitely wait, you won't be sorry. They are made fresh so you will always get a bag of warm, soft, cinnamon covered donuts every time. They are so good! I'm not even joking here. They are $5.00 a bag and worth every. single. penny. My family and I have walked around the corn maze, the little pumpkin patch, and usually buy some cider and mums. The mums they sell are absolutely beautiful! The cider is very tasty, and the pumpkins are nice too. We've never went on the hay ride so I can't comment on that. Sometimes they have a haunted hay ride, it looks fun (I've seen some of the workers in costume), but haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe next year?! Yes, it's kind of a small farm, but they have enough activities and beautiful things to look at. You could probably spend a good hour there. The kids loved the haunted hay ride I do feel it's a bit pricey at $10 per person but, it's all in fun. They had a corn maze, and a small train for the kids to ride, and a great pick up truck photo op. They had a great crop of pumpkins this year from jumbo to super tiny. 70cents a lb I find it to be reasonably priced. In the gift area. We wait each year for this place to open. There is no parking or entry fee so it's a great place to kill a couple of hours with your kids. They have a nice selection of pumpkins of all sizes and the prices are reasonable. You have to get them weighed before you get on the line which speeds things up. They also take credit cards in the middle of a field without a permanent store so that is also a plus. CIDER DONUTS!! Made while you watch. They have gotten a bit pricey this year at $6/dz for a bag of small donuts but are they ever worth it. Cider and baked goods are also available and are really good if pricey. They have a toddler corn maze as well as a regular one. They added a train ride for the kids this year. There are two Hay Rides. The regular one is expensive for its length I have not done the haunted one but the sign clearly states that it is not for kids below a certain age that looks like good advice based on some of the reviews. There are plenty of places for photos. Food is limited to basically hot dogs. There are goats and chickens but no petting zoo. The only problem this year was yellow jackets. They were out in force and made it tough on the kids. If I was in NYC, the drive is a little long to be worth it. You may be better off going up to Warwick. If you are at all local, It's a nice family oriented place as part of a days outing. read more

If you have a young child, this is the place to take them. It's hard to find one of these farms around here that doesn't have an entry and/or parking fee. This place has neither. And it's also got plenty of parking and is easy to get to. You don't even need to come here to pick a pumpkin. There is an awesome little corn maze that's great for little ones, a small farm animal area, and a ton of space to run around. Kids will love to run between the things to do here. There's also a hayride that goes around the farm that's $3 per person. Once you're all tuckered out, be sure to try the apple cider donuts and the apple cider. It'll hit the spot. read more

If you're looking to go pumpkin picking then Conklin Farms is the place to go. I first visited 2 years ago with some girlfriends. It's rather intimate here as opposed to some of the bustling places I've been. And that's exactly why I like it. Fast forward 2 years. I'm now a mom of a lively 10 month old. My husband and I took our little boy here this past Friday afternoon. He had a blast. Conklin Farms is really geared toward children. On Friday afternoons between 4-6 pm they offer pony rides, face painting , balloons, and FREE hayrides. Hayrides will normally run you $3 (or $8 for Haunted) and kids under 2 are always free. Parking is free, which is nice. When we got here, we took our sleeping baby right to the hay ride. It was fun, but definitely short. I think the older kids enjoyed it more than our little one though. They have a growth chart that you or your children can stand next to with the year. That's cute for yearly visits to see how much you grew. We had fun with that. Then we played with the giant pumpkins. They have a huge selection of pumpkins and gourds. Lots of great photo ops here. They offer wheelbarrows to transport your pumpkins across the field to the parking area. We used it for some fun photos too. There are also some farm animals (goats, bunnies, and roosters). It was fun watching my son watch the animals. There is a Snack Shack and Donut Hut. Unfortunately the donuts are only available on Saturday and Sunday. So we were left disappointed. I was really craving a hot donut. They had a pizza truck the day we were there too. They also sell a variety of bagged apples, jams, etc. Pumpkins are 65 cents per pound. Overall, Conklin Farms is a fun, affordable, family friendly place. We can't wait to go back again next fall. read more

My husband and I visited this farm this past Sunday with our two girls. We had a nice time. We got there when it opened so it was nice and quiet. It's a nice open area with pumpkins all over. They were plenty of photo props to get some good pictures. They had a small corn maze and a train ride that the kids loved. There were some chickens, bunnies and goats too. They also had a hay ride and some sort of sling shot activity. I liked that there was no entry fee or parking fee. We only had to pay for food and some of the activities. The maze was free. We did the train ride for $10 ($5 each), had the mini donuts $6, 2 apple ciders $6($3 each), we did a glitter tattoo $5, and bought 2 small pumpkins before we left $10. So we spent $37 total for a nice family day out. I suggest you get there early because it does get crowded. read more

I was specifically looking for a nearby farm that offered fun fall farm activities without the circus atmosphere and overcrowding. So we decided to visit Conklin Farms. After a short 30 min ride, we arrived at exactly the time they opened at 10am. We were maybe 1 out of 6 families there. They offer many of the things we were looking for: 1) Pumpkin picking 2) Hay rides - regular version $3/pp over 2 yrs old; haunted version is a little more 3) Corn Maze - free. There are two mazes, one for toddlers and one for families 4) Pumpkin train ride for toddlers $3 5) Animals - a few goats, hens, and bunnies 6) APPLE CIDER DONUTS - they are warm and homemade. Its a bag of 10 or so mini donuts. My whole family couldn't get enough of these. The farm is small and intimate. What I like is that they don't charge a fee for every activity. Here, both corn mazes are free. Once caveat, the hay ride doesn't really take you anywhere. They drive around the periphery of the farm and then circle back. Nothing to see but the street and the neighboring houses. It was more forf the kids to experience then anything else. As far as food, they have a snack shack that sells hots dogs, apple cider, candy apples, snacks, etc. The apple cider donuts are a must. They have a large variety of pumpkins to choose from and they also sell pies and jams. Overall, a small but fun farm to visit on a nice fall morning. If you have younger kids, please let me tell you DO NOT take them on the haunted hayride. I took a five year old who loves scary things. I do not helicopter watch her, I do not coddle her. She watches scary movies beyond what is "age appropriate," she loves looking at the scariest masks at Halloween stores, watching videos of sharks eating people for some reason? She's real weird. My point is, she is a generally fearless kid. I was extremely unprepared for how scary the hayride would be. Mainly because they gave me no inclination. It was noon on a Monday on a small family farm... Why should I expect it to be so scary? This should be age restricted quite frankly. Again, coming from someone who does not shelter their kid in the *slightest*... She was hyperventilating after and I think had an actual panic attack. The masks on the people are very scary, they jump onto the tractor (which, this isn't my first haunted hayride, I'm used to them chasing it but there was like 4 at a time on each side and then they actually get ON the tractor, have "chainsaws" in their hands, etc). I feel really, really awful I put her through that. And paid $20 to do it, no less. On top of that, it was just a crappy farm. I used to work on a pumpkin/apple picking orchard. This one is... sub par. The wheel barrows to get pumpkins are PAST the checkout line. Why. You have to weigh your own pumpkin before getting to the register which is also like, why do I need to do this...? Get a scale at the register? Like every other apple and pumpkin orchard on this earth? The woman was also really rude about it. 2 stars because these were literally the best cider donuts I've ever had. read more

For the price, Conklin Farm is hard to beat for fall activities. Whole not as large as some of the enormous farms further into NY or closer to PA, this family run farm has pretty much everything you want for fall family fun. There are plenty of pumpkins - though not in a field, they are collected into groups but you can still choose whichever you like, hayrides - both regular and a haunted version with people who jump out at you, a tractor train, apple cider, donuts, and a corn maze. Only the pumpkins, the food, and the hayride cost anything. It's a great way to spend a morning or afternoon with kids or the whole family for getting into the fall spirit. read more

Plentiful pumpkins and gourds, all in relatively good shape and in different sizes. There is no admission fee to walk among the pumpkins, see the animals, or walk through the corn maze. If you want to buy pumpkins, you can pick up a wheelbarrow at the entrance, pick your pumpkins, weigh them (69 cents a pound, I think), and pay for them. As for the animals, there is one cage with a few goats, and another cage on the other side of the farm with bunnies. The corn maze is not huge, so there's no fear of getting lost. For young toddlers, it might be a little too bumpy and uneven to avoid tripping. We paid $3 for a short hayride around the farm. You ride along the corn field, across an empty grass field, and turn around. Nothing terribly exciting. The exhaust from the tractor was very strong. There is a gift shop-type structure that sells painted miniature pumpkins (gourds), homemade apple pies, pumpkin pies, and other goodies. I bought a couple pies and my family agreed, they were delicious. The pies are $13.50 each. All in all, my daughter and I had fun. Very family-friendly place with nice people. read more

Honestly, I'm a little surprised Conklin Farms has a four star rating. This was the second year I've been here and it will likely be my last. Here's why... It's a pretty simple farm that seemed to be geared more towards young children. They offer pumpkin picking, children's game,hayrides, corn maze, and food/drink station, and farm animals. Sure, at first it seems like they have a lot to offer. Right? Wrong. All of these activities were really basic. The hayride just circles the perimeter of the farm (which is pretty small to begin with). The only farm animals they had were two goats and a couple of chickens. There was also a large "do not feed" sign posted. Very different from other local farms I've visited that have many more animals and allow you to actually feed them. The corn maze was extremely tiny and must have only been intended for toddlers. There was one childrens game which involved hitting a target with tennis balls. The game costed a couple of dollars. There were some artifacts and "head in the hole" cutouts which made for good photo ops. But, we were done with that a few minutes and a couple pictures later. I didn't try the apple cider donuts this year but I had them the previous time I went. They were good and probably the best part of the farm. Overall, I wouldn't recommend coming to Conklin Farm unless you're bringing small children. For older children/teens and adults, I think traveling a little further to visit another farm would be more worthwhile. Donaldson Farm in Hackettstown and Alstede Farm in Chester are both much better options! read more

I LOVE Conklin farms! Its a family run business and they put a little extra care into making the customers feel welcomed with their cheerfulness and availability to help with anything you need. All staff and customers were wearing masks. Everything is reasonably priced, and there is no entrance or parking fee. Pumpkins are organized In rows with lots of room to walk around which is great for social distancing. They have a cute photo op with an adorable old truck all decorated so beautifully and festive for FREE. The cider donuts and hot apple cider are to die for and soooo fresh. I highly recommend Conklin Farms for a fun fall day out with the family. read more

We went here last weekend based on one of the previous reviews that it was a smaller not as crowded pumpkin farm. It was indeed quite small but we got there right when it opened.... as did 50 other people and it got more and more crowded within an hour. Think the secrets out! It was sufficient for our 8 and 2 year old but I don't think we'll be returning next year. Beware of bees, as soon as we bought apple ciders they were all Over us! We have been going here for a few years and have generally enjoyed our experience. There were always plenty of pumpkins to choose from as well as a good selection of jams in the store on the way out. We also would go on the haunted hayride if the weather was permitting. This year however, the pumpkin selection was very sparse as were the items for sale in the store. The haunted hayride cost also got jacked up to a whopping $15 per person! Spending sixty dollars on an amusing but brief wagon ride through a barn with masked teenagers running at us with fake chainsaws didn't seem to make much sense, so we skipped it. We actually had just gotten back from lunch, which cost around the same minus the tip. I hope this year was just an aberration (I doubt the hayride cost will go down though) because we would like to continue the tradition. Large facility, family-friendly atmosphere, reasonable parking and lines, plenty of fun for multiple age ranges, and reasonably priced! Let's go through that list one by one... Large facility: They have a large farm field broken up into a few areas. There is a large patch for pumpkins. And it looks like the pumpkins are actually grown here, as we could see thick vines on the ground. There's also an area with corn that you can play in. There's a rear section for a haunted hay ride, which didn't look seriously scary, but could still give you a good laugh/scream. There's a large open area with more pumpkins, with a few farm animals, and a few games, like pumpkin slingshot, food, and train rides for small children. Family-friendly atmosphere: Since it's a large open area with no travel required after parking, it's great for kids to run around in, and works for strollers. It's free to enter the farm. You basically pay individually for any activities, food, or items you purchase. There was a small train pulled by a ride-on mower good for kids 3 to 8. The farm animal cages have goats, rabbits, and chickens. Really, it's jut easy for kids to run around and explore, playing in the pumpkin patch. Reasonable parking and lines: We spent about 10 minutes idling in our car in traffic before entering the farm, but parking was easy. There were 2 police officers and several well-trained, flag-waving adults thoughtfully directing us to easy on-site parking. Plenty of fun for multiple age ranges: Pumpkins to play with for toddlers, a ride for small children, a pumpkin slingshot (pay per shot) for older kids, haunted hay rides for teenagers/adults, and food for everyone. Reasonably priced: We bought apple cider donuts, which were really more like apple cider donut holes. $5 for a small bag of about 10. I felt the price was reasonable, and they were delicious and made right there in a small shack. The line to buy the donuts took about an hour, though. But there were 5 or 6 people in that shacking working diligently, so they were actively doing their best to get everyone food. As I mentioned, it's free to enter. If you just want to roam around and explore, see some animals, you can leave without spending a dime. Pumpkins are "pay per pound." They have a large corn maze, though I don't know if there is a cost to enter. All of this was available on a Sunday. We've also gone on a weekday, but it's very minimally staffed during the week. On the weekday we went, there was no food or rides available. What a great simple farm. Our family going on 4th year to the Conklin farm. Fun all the time. Great pumpkin picking selections Big small no matter great fun. The hayride nice and simple for 3 dollar's Plus the Haunted Hayride is Fantastic. There special Donuts is a hit every year. Must try. The pets are cute for the kids, the corn maze is nice and simple but we bit bumpy so watch your step. The sling shot at the pumpkin target is fun. Nice hand or face painting. Our grand children love it very much. The people are nice and polite. I recommend The Conklin Farm anytime, It has a great Harvest feel to it. The Parking is free No admission fee.
