Dropped a pair of shoes for sole and heel replacement. Paid in full up front, shoes promised March 24. Went to get the shoes on the 24th - not ready. Told to come back in two days, the 26th. Went back late afternoon of the 26th. Still not ready, told to come back April 3rd. Came back mid-afternoon of April 3rd, still not ready. Told to come back April 7. He assured me they would be ready as he was going to work over the weekend. Returned late April 7th and still not ready. Admitted he had not touched the shoes since the last visit because his family was "upset" with me expressing my frustrations about the shoes not ready the first three times he said they would be ready. Got my shoes and partial refund and left. After six weeks, the soles are on but not finished (excess leather not trimmed off), not stained. No new heels, just flat soles. I will not go back nor will I recommend this shop to anyone. read more

Connie's Shoe Repair is full of soul! Connie's has been keeping RVA's shoes shiny and spiffy for over 100 years! In this "throw away" society, it's refreshing to see the art of cobbling hasn't faded away completely. Brian, who assisted me, was kind enough to share with me the colorful history of this iconic shoe repair. It used to be located downtown and recently has moved to the West End. He gave me a mini tour of the shop's vintage shoe shine chairs, 3 of the original 10 remain. He showed me photographs of the owners, the downtown buildings and retro advertisements. We had a great conversation and I feel like I made a new friend! He even supported me by purchasing one of my books! They carry many foot related accessories too, fun socks, shoe horns, laces etc. I loved the sign that said "Time wounds all heels!" I needed new taps on a pair of kitten heels. The turn around time was just a couple of days, the work was professional and the price was decent, $13.50. I wasn't too fond of paying up front, but they must have people who don't come back for their shoes. Also, some other shops will polish or shine your shoes when you pick them up, that would've been a plus! But as for their being my go to repair shop? They're a shoe in! read more

I am very happy with my recent repair! I have gorgeous pair of Italian loafers I bought back in the late 90s that were still in great shape but had worn out soles. After reading up on local cobbler shops, I decided to bring my shoes here to be re-soled. While the job took a little longer than expected (which was fine, I want the work done well, not fast), he did a beautiful job to restore these beauties to pretty darned close to their original glory. This was my first experience taking shoes to be resoled. My dad has a pair of very, very worn dress shoes. I wish I had taken a before picture because they literally had holes in the soles. We just picked the shoes up today. They took about 1-1 1/2 weeks and they are BEAUTIFUL! We got full soles put on because they were much needed. The resole price included cleaning and conditioning as well! The price was not bad at all, and my dad was very pleased! We will be taking all of our shoes in need to Connie's from now on. So save your receipt and check your credit card statement! When I dropped my sandal off, I paid by credit card and was given a yellow tag stating "$10 pd" to bring back when I picked up the sandal (needing a stitching due to a a dog chew). I came back, gave my yellow tag which had "$10 pd" on it to the friendly counter fellow in exchange for my shoe. I got my sandal said, good-bye & left pleased-as-punch with the results. Imagine my surprise to see my credit card statement shows a charge of $18.95! Since I no longer have the $10 yellow tag receipt, I have no recourse. Get your receipt and KEEP it. The service here is terrible!!! He tried to argue with me for 10 minutes about my shoes. He closed early on Saturday and I could not get my shoes out for my Birthday that I specifically purchased them for. He told me to leave them in until Saturday for best results when I was going to pick them up on Friday and then because he closed 3 hours early I couldn't get them out Saturday. He took no accountability for how him closing early affected me in not having shoes for my event. He would not refund me or offer to provide a free service to me for another pair of shoes. Stepping into Connie's Shoe Repair is like taking a trip back in time. From the busy street they are on, to their quaint store front, to the people inside, everything about Connie's feels authentic, original, and warm. There is a mountain of vintage shoe boxes lining the walls to the back of the store and a vintage row of shoe shinning seats at the front. Nathan will greet you will a big smile and ask you how he can help. I actually found this shop through a simple google search and could not have been happier with my experience. I brought a pair of boots to have the heel repaired and was offered two options: a simple repair fixing the problem or a more intensive repair assuring the boots would last longer and stand up to the elements. I choose the later and I am so glad I did. Nathan, Connie's grandson, explained to me why I should choose one over the other and what the benefits would be of protecting my shoes before they begin to fall apart. I paid only $40 to have the soles reinforced, the rubber under the heels replaced, and a solid cleaning. Nathan will introduce you to the entire team at Connie's and explain why they are in business and why they strive to make their customer's happy. The shop has been in Richmond for over 100 years and it's clear why they are still around. Parking can be a pain, but they are actually willing to come outside and pick up your shoes from your car at the curb if you call ahead. Check out their website as well - they will accommodate out of town shoe repairs through the mail and even have a bond bailsmen service. Not sure exactly how bail business is doing, but as far as shoes are concerned, I've definitely found my go-to cobblers. read more

I had a pretty bad experience here. I brought some boots here to be taken in at the shaft and the stitching looked terrible. It started coming out after a couple of weeks. The craftsmanship looked like I had sewn them myself. And I was charged a lot of money. I had to take them to Gus's around the corner to get them fixed (I should have taken them there in the first place but i was in a rush and gus's was really busy that day - mistake). I hate leaving bad reviews, especially since the gentleman behind the desk is such a nice guy. Hopefully this was a fluke and others have had more positive experiences. read more

I took a pair of sandals here over the summer. The strap was broken off from the base of the shoe. Connie's was able to re-sew the strap, by hand, and the results were perfect - no discernible difference from the other unbroken shoe. Also, it was inexpensive ($10) and Nathan and his assistant couldn't have been more charming and friendly. I would go back and visit them even if I didn't have a shoe need. Brought in some boots in mid November. Was told they'd be done on approximately December 11th. December 11th comes and I hear nothing. I call on the 14th for a status update. I'm told they'll look into it and give me a call back with a new estimate. A week goes by and I hear nothing. No calls. No voicemails. Call again on the 21st. I hear the guy telling the guy I'm speaking to that he hasn't even started them yet. I explain how that is unacceptable to me and I will be coming in to pick them up and expect a full refund. They tell me only the owner can issue refunds and he isn't in today. Looks like I'll be there first thing in the morning to speak with the owner. Hoping they accommodate me with a full refund. It's unacceptable to wait over a month to start an order. It's even worse to avoid contacting customers. read more

I had a new sole put on a pair of 15-year old Sandro Moscoloni boots which cost me over 50% of what a new pair would have cost--I don't think these shoes would normally be brought in for a repair. But since I couldn't find anything new that fit like the old ones did, I opted to go ahead and pay for a new sole. I've been wearing them since every work day for probably the past 5 or 6 months and they are holding up great. So glad I went for the repair on this one. read more

Save yourself the trouble and go to Gus'! I dropped my shoes off two weeks ago to have the sole glued and the shoes cleaned. Upon dropping them off I was told that they'd be done and ready for pickup in a week. I explained to him that my job has me out of town for most of the week so I would be a day late in picking them up but needed them to be ready because the following week I'd be out of town for my job yet again. The next week comes and I'm heading out of my job a few minutes later than expected but they're right up the street, so I called and explained that I was running just a little behind and might get there at 5:01PM, literally, if not by 5PM when they close. I asked if they'd be able to wait for literally one extra minute before closing the door so I could pick up my shoes as I would be back out of town the following week and this was my only day available to get them. I was informed that they closed at 5PM SHARP and if I wasn't in the doors by then they'd unfortunately have to close them and I'd have to try again next week. Meanwhile I understand business is business, there's also an overarching theme, customer service. Luckily, I got there at 4:58PM and wasn't denied service for being 60 seconds late only to discover that my shoes were re-glued as requested but not cleaned! So not only did I leave work early and rush to make sure I got there before 5PM because they would be looking the doors sharp, it was all in vain as my shoes were still dirty. I explained to the worker what I'd left the shoes to have done and he apologized profusely and requested that I left them with him, that he would have them cleaned as requested and ready for pick up the next week. The next week came and I heard nothing from Connie's. The following Monday I called to check on my shoes, only to learn that the dirty shoes I encountered on my first trip there for pickup were the result of a cleaning. I wish there was an option to upload photos to illustrate just how lackluster of a job they performed on my shoes and they were extremely expensive. I honestly could've done a better job at home with a little soapy water and a washrag, and would've if it weren't for time constraints due to my job. I don't remember the last time I was this disappointed in a stores customer service and work. I've heard wonderful things about Gus' and went but had a hard time finding parking and opted for Connie's. Needless to say, it doesn't pay to be lazy. read more

I just picked up my brand new Christian Louboutin pumps to have them resoled with a rubber sole and my shoes were DAMAGED!!! When my concerns were expressed the owner was not helpful and did not make any offer to accommodate the damage. The quality of workmanship was horrible!!!!! This place is not the Connie's of old. Connie's has been known around Richmond for ever as a great place to go to have shoe repair done. The people running it now have no clue how to run this type of business. Connie would never allow a pair of shoes to go out the door dirty, even if you have a heel replaced while you wait. Connie would wipe them off and return them to you free of dirt, even if you didn't request a shinning. The repair was done well but the shoes were returned dirty. **I'd suggest you AVOID CONNIE'S, AVOID CONNIE'S** If you're a fan quality work this place isn't for you. I dropped off two pair of black shoes to have some loose stitching repaired. When I returned to pick the shoes I notices they had only stitched halfway across the toe of the shoe and the needle holes were noticeably bigger. Now this shoes had belonged to grandfather and had been passed down to me and they affectively ruined them. And on top of that, there were hanging threads that he had the nerve to fix with a lighter in front of me. I left the shoes for them to do better. I haven't picked them up yet but I fear I've made a big mistake in leaving them because in further inspecting the other pair of black shoes I actually took home I see that they used grey thread. I also see that the repair was not even completed. I feel dirty giving this place 1 star. Avoid this place like the plague! Any good reviews of Connie's are probably from friends or family. read more
