The entire time being in very bad pain. He was told we don't have time for that now. Requested water and was told you don't need water right now. At 10:30 in the morning he still was not dressed and ready for the day. He was constantly berated for the clothing he wore. Whenever he rang the bell for assistance he would have to wait at least 20 minutes for someone to come in and help. Basic human dignity was thrown aside, he was told he didn't need a bed pan or a urinal. They didn't have time for that. Food was served cold or put where he couldn't reach it. They then complained that he wasn't eating. False information was put in his chart and I cannot get it removed. When anyone was asked a question no one could answer anything. The common response was I don't know. Upon discharge we were given a list of medical transport companies that were 50 - 60 miles away that would cost $500 + to transport. When we mentioned this to the social worker her response was those are the names we have. My daughter found an agency in James City County that transports no charge for James City County residents. She found this from New Jersey. Funny Windsor Meade knew nothing about this. Never gave me a list of items that we would need once he was home for example: table for the bed, gait belt etc. I was told repeatedly that he was to be admitted to a nursing home. My response was that was not going to happen. They told me he needed 24 - 7 nursing care and that he had no business going home. Did not approve of our decision to go home. Was given a list of nursing homes in the area that we could investigate once we realized that home was not the place to be. I must say that we have a wonderful team of home health people coming to our house and he is responding greatly to the care he is receiving. I would give Windsor Meade a rating of 0 if I could. It was given a 5 star rating by Medicare. I would hate to see what a 2 or 3 star facility was like.

I must have visited this facility at least 3 times a week for a decade! I live nearby so it was convenient to walk there with my kids and visit my dad and the other elderly residents. We got to know many of the folks there, all the nurses and nuns as well. The front desk receptionist was always courteous and welcoming, the foyer is spacious and simply decorated. This place always felt more like an apartment building than a "nursing home." It was always fresh, bright, and clean. The floors were always so shiny and immaculate. We checked in and took the elevator to my dad's room. The living spaces there were always neat and organized, with laundry services provided. Residents can make their rooms as personalized as they'd like. We saw some lovely, well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms. The common areas are pristine and comfortable. We enjoyed seeing the other seniors there and took pleasure reading to them, helping with meals in the communal dining room, and even conducting Bible studies! The kitchenette has a couple tables, snacks and drinks for the residents. There's also a well stocked library and games. The nuns of the Little Sisters that run the facility provide spiritual support and many activities to keep the folks there encouraged and entertained when appropriate. They also have yard sales and festivals throughout the year. The nursing care was amazing and we felt confident in the safety and healthcare my father received. He was cared for in a dignified and gentle manner as he went through the stages of needed care. The staff made his adjustments for further medical assistance seamlessly. They certainly made a difficult situation much more easy to handle. Our minds were set at ease knowing my dad was being treated with compassion and love. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings, where residents can talks walks, pause for prayer and meditation and just enjoy being outside with nature. I'm so thankful for the extraordinary care my dad was given by the incredible people here. We couldn't have chosen a better home for him.

On or about October 30th, she walked in on her cell phone and said, "Oh good God," which was unprofessional and offensive. My mom has swallowing issues from her stroke, yet Joann tried to give her multiple pills at once and moved the cup toward her too fast. When I told her to stop, she snapped, "I've been a nurse over 20 years and I know what I'm doing," and then pushed my hand away as I tried to protect my mom. No nurse should ever push or touch a family member--completely unacceptable behavior. Overall, Sheltering Arms Rehab Center is very good, and the therapy team is excellent. Jonathan was outstanding with my mom's care. I truly hope Joann has been reprimanded and disciplined appropriately so this never happens to another family. Giving a one star only because of the incident with Joann.

The really bad thing of this facility is the meals that they serve. They were terrible. Found out that the people who got our meals together never tasted the food to see if it tasted good and 99 % of the time all meals were cold and tasteless. I used numerous bottles of Texas Pete just to give some kind of taste to what I was eating. I was losing weight and even when I complained to the people in charge and they said something would be done, NOTHING changed. I will definitely make sure that when I get my Left Hip Replacement surgery done in late March or early April I WILL DEFINITELY MAKE SURE THAT I DO NOT GO TO THIS FACILITY. One of the STARS of this facility was the CNA Margie as she was always looking out for me and trying to bring me some warm food.

Almost every awesome staff member who had a heart has left. The Government Medical System at work. They took hiring out of the facilities hands and Gov agencies stepped in and recked it. They hire young people who do not have the skills to do what is best for the elderly and it shows but end up paying 3 times because they are hired outside through a third party. They have $$$$ for boxes upon boxes of stupid bears and blankets piled high encompassing the receptionist area to be given to newcomers. People don't want a blanket or bear from China. WE WANT THE CARE OUR LOVED ONES DESERVE! The good ones are so understaffed, overworked, way underpaid and the young ones don't have the heart to be here, it's just a paycheck attitude. Pay the good caring ones their worth. Instead, hours are cut and while others do the job of three people. They are the ones who have a heart for this job. Sadly, today my heart finally broke as I visited... ceiling tiles soaked and falling down, makeshift drainage buckets with tubing from the ceiling, light fixtures puddling with water and there is so much mold in the ceiling of the patients' rooms and everywhere!!! THIS IS A HEALTH HAZZARD TIMES TEN... AND THIS IS WHAT THEY THINK IS A WELCOMING NURSING FACILITY FOR OUR LOVED ONES TO BE CARED FOR. To Whom It May Concern, Please Higher a Damn Professional Plumber, Electrician and HVAC Company to finally fix something. SPEND THE MONEY. I am posting photo's hoping something gets done!!! I can no longer remain quiet. IF NOT ME THEN WHO? IF NOT NOW THEN WHEN? I AM THE ADVOCATE FOR THOSE WHO CAN NOT SPEAK. I am praying that the situation will be taken care of immediately. People over money! Would you want your loved ones living like this? I doubt it. Thank you. Stacey P.
