My friend and I stayed at the Continental Inn for six nights this July. The Continental Inn is divided into two separate locations across a main street from each other. The hotel is definitely older but extremely clean which is super important to me but it shows some wear and tear. It's a good value because it's fairly close to the beach and Boardwalk. During the first part of our trip we stayed in the single story motel type in located near the office. I think we were in room 110 and unfortunately there was a lot of noise outside our window worsening each night and our air conditioner was on life-support so we left our window open. This made it a little bit difficult for sleeping. The room and bathroom are a decent size and there's a small refrigerator, (smaller) microwave, dresser drawers, a Keurig, TV and a full length mirror along with I believe an ironing board. It's also located right next to an extra mile gas station which has a lot of items. There were a few things that were not in working order when we arrived and we tried to live with them. When we reported the light was out in the bathroom they came and fixed it immediately. Unfortunately we couldn't get the Keurig to work (no power) because it was plugged in behind the dresser so my friend went down to the office and they moved us across the street to the nicer Continental Inn. We did not know but this building is where the pool is located. This was a much nicer room and I did a video that I will post. There were some better things about the first room and better things about the second room but the second room had a great air conditioner and windows down both sides of the room so a nicer aesthetic and we had a very quiet nights sleep for the rest of our stay. The new room across the street had covered parking where the one near the office you parked in front of your unit. The one across the street had an elevator and was very secure and the original hotel was right by the office so both are secure. The 2nd room across the street also came with the same amenities including a full length mirror and I remember this one had an iron and ironing board. The people that run the motel are super, super, super nice and they try very hard to make it a nice stay. Even though we experienced some problems, I would stay there again. One thing to note the pillows are terrible (I think because they wash them) so bring your own pillow! We went to Ross and bought a pillow. read more

The bed was surprisingly comfy, but not fully made as room service haphazardly tossed 3 pillows into the middle of the bed. There is a mini fridge and a microwave, but herein ends the positives. There is mold on the signage behind the door and rust on the lighting fixtures. The room and the furniture is very worn. The bathroom has a certain unpleasant, pungent smell that is all too common in cheap motels. There are fewer parking spots than rooms so good luck. This hotel is very affordable for the area and is just fine if all you need is a place to sleep for one night and be on your merry way. People probably don't stay here more than one night, which is why the front desk only programmed my keycard for 1 day instead of the 2 I had the misfortune of booking. All that being said, I may stay here again for the combination of location and price. read more

Amazing rooms especially the 2 queen size room separated by a door and the the bathroom in between

This place was okay just to sleep overnight late night arrival. We literally got here around 10 pm, went to sleep, and left at 430am. Everything was okay with the room. It just needs to be upgraded. The light switch was cracked, and there's stains in the bathtub. The microwave is really old. The one real negative thing about this hotel is the parking. There are two buildings, and we were placed in the building across the street. We were okay with that until we drove over and there was no parking. If you plan on staying at any hotel in Santa cruz, just make sure you check the parking first. read more

Pros: Centrally located, room smelled clean, there's a bunch of quick and easy food options within walking distance, and the AC worked Cons: The sheets were rough and uncomfortable, the neighborhood is loud, some things in the room were chipped or broken, and the bathtub didn't drain so we could each only take 1 shower or else it would have overflowed. When we called the front desk we were told the maintenance crew had already gone home and there was nothing they could do. When we asked to speak with a manager the next day we were promised a call that never came. Overall, you get what you pay for and I wouldn't recommend this place or go back. read more

As the cheapest hotel that could be found on a Saturday last-minute, the Continental Inn did not disappoint. Checking in at the front desk was pretty standard, and they had the basic amenities needed for a one-night stay... clean hardwood floors, comfortable bed, phone charging stations, a working TV, fridge, microwave, shower, temperature control in the room, and free parking. It also had the laid-back feel and environment that most hotels in Santa Cruz offer, with cool art and decor on the walls, and a location near the beach as well as in proximity to decent eateries, nightlife, and places of interest. A couple things to note, the room looked like it was run down a bit, but covered in paint and quick fixes to hide the fact. It could be seen in the fixtures, doors, and walls (like it was partially renovated, but not quite). And the bathroom was pretty tiny, with an awkward layout, the door couldn't even open all the way because it would hit the toilet. But these were manageable, pretty much a nonfactor during my stay, so it's not a big deal. Overall, nothing really stood out about the hotel. But it was good enough for a simple and easy weekend trip to Santa Cruz. read more

BLACK MOLD ROOM 118!!!! We have stayed here a few times over the last 10 years, we never had an issue...not until this weekend. We made a reservation and notified them we would need a crib because we were traveling with a baby. Upon opening the room we were hit with an intense smell of bleach. Impossible to ignore. We thought it was probably just cleaned but it was SO INTENSE that we had to open the door and window while the fan was blowing. I knew it was way too strong to be from just being cleaned so I began to search the room. There was BLACK MOLD in MULTIPLE places. There's no way they were not aware of the mold with how strong the bleach smell was. It was late and we were tired so we called the office to ask for another room because of the mold. We were told they were booked and that they would let maintenance know. After a couple minutes conversation they offered to "look for another room" for us. We were moved into a slightly larger room with no mold or bleach smell. It's unfortunate that a place we have counted on through the years has gone downhill this much. The rooms are very run down. We will not be back but feel it's important that people are aware before risking their health here. We had someone with asthma with us as well. Our eyes were burning from the bleach fumes. Spent a horrible night here NOT sleeping. Don't get an "Annex" room. I was on the 1st floor and could hear all of Santa Cruz. Every conversation in neighboring rooms, every screaming person on the street, every loud, drunken patron tromping down the exterior corridor in front of my room. And then there was the incessant rattling of the mini-fridge that must be about to die (there was so much build up of frost inside that I'm certain customers before me have been unplugging it to endure). You can hear EVERYTHING inside these rooms. So, unless you plan to be one of the drunk, yelling people staying here.... stay AWAY from here. Aside from the noise, the bed was horribly uncomfortable and lumpy. The place backs up to a Chinese restaurant parking lot that seemed to have a lot of midnight visitors banging around in the dumpsters. For the price, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. Next time I will spend the extra $30 to stay at the Hyatt that I can literally see out of my window full of dark, probably sound-proofed rooms without rattling appliances and sagging mattresses. read more

The first night I stayed here, all was fine. My daughter and I were able to check in and get a good nights rest. However, on our second and final night, the next door guest, decided to have a full on party with loud music waking my daughter and I at 2:00AM. I let the front desk know about it twice of which he stated he'd take care of the disturbance but it continued for over an hour. After my third call and threatening to contact the police (which I did) not much changed. They turned the music off when the police arrived and back up it went for another hour. I'll never again stay here and don't recommend it to anyone unless you are ok with having your sleep interrupted abruptly. It's also pretty dated and needs updating. It's also not that clean. Just don't book here! Save yourself the trouble. read more

Not in the best area, but customer service was great!!! My partner and I visited this area and stayed here for a couple of nights. Both employees at the front desk were patient, helpful, and kind. The actual inn doesn't look like much from the outside, but our room (room 124) was clean and had a fridge, microwave, iron/ironing board, closed off bathroom, storage/closet space, and a working AC. Parking is tight and interesting. Best not to park in the back. We parked up front near the entrance since the lobby is open 24 hours. Also, for anyone wanting to visit the boardwalk, this inn isn't too far away. Overall, I recommend this hotel and I'd stay here again in a pinch. Can't beat it for the price! Not a grand hotel, but definitely nowhere near a roach motel. Right in the middle! read more

The front desk staff were nice but this hotel (or at least this room) is in serious disrepair. It wasn't clean or quiet. From old dust filled lighting in the bathroom and evidence of water damage to the gross dark brown blood/fishing guts(?) Splattered on the walls. I could tell the cleaning was superficial because I found an old fishing lure behind the bathroom faucet. For about $50 more I could have stayed at the chain hotel across Soquel and I really regret that I didn't. If they just repainted the doors, ceiling, and some wall areas, and did a deep clean it wouldn't be nearly so bad read more

I had scheduled a two night stay because of some contract work in SC...turned out i finished early and did not need the second night stay at the Continental...i talked to the young man at the desk and he said his manager would credit me for a night, and two days later they did...that, is not normal and i do appreciate that they offered and followed up on this request...normally if you reserve on line thru a service, the hotel will not do this...i happened to do it directly with this hotel just in case...i also think they credited me because it is a family run operation...either way, i appreciate it... the hotel itself was not bad, it fit the purpose as a clean room/bed for the one night of use... read more

We stayed here after a long beach day, i called a couple days before inquiring about the parking situation and told me that "parking is first come first serve" And "do not guarantee parking for gueats" Apparently they care more about the extra money they make "sharing" already limited parking with the local restaurants. Almost 300$ for the room and no guaranteed parking is ridiculous!! There are a lot of shady people hanging outside and police activity around the area. The room was ok, but the bed was hard and the pillows might as well been rocks, woke up with the most incredible neck and back pain We paid for a late check out (3pm) Only to get woken up to a phone calling us to see when we are checking out. Then shortly after the housekeeping barging in our room while we were unclothed with a DO NOT DISTURB sign hanging on our door. Very unprofessional!!!!!!! Overall this inn is way to expensive for the quality of service,quality of amendments, non guarantee of parking and the miscomuncation of the hotel staff to let housekeeping know what rooms paid for a late check out. The only good thing was the very nice lady that checked us in at the front. So in conclusion, i would definitely not stay here again,i definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone, this was a very disappointing stay all arround. read more

Clean and roomy. In room 201 there's a sign above the toilet directing you how to flush so you don't waste water. I guess the toilet runs if you don't push the handle properly? We didn't have a problem with it. The TV is hard to see from the left side of the bed because it's offset due to room design. You can see where other guests moved the dresser that the tv sits on so it's not hidden behind this wall. The wall is scraped because of the dresser being pulled forward. We also moved the dresser and tv forward so we could see it. If the tv remote doesn't work, make sure small remote eye is sitting in front of the tv. It's noisy outside at dusk and dawn; street noise, sirens, garbage trucks. You can also hear the rolling thunder of other guests luggage being moved about in the morning. But the middle of night was quiet. I give this a 3 star rating because even though this review isn't the greatest, we have stayed in much worse places. We chose this place because first off we needed free parking, a fridge, a microwave, the price was right, and the location was good for where we needed to be. Those were our priorities. After checking out the room, we would not have stayed if it wasn't clean enough, and it was, so it met all our criteria. Oh, they advertise a pool and hot tub, and sure enough they were there, but the pool is teeny tiny, only suitable for children, and the hot tub is across the street at the other building property! I like to go back and forth between pool and hot tub and that was virtually impossible here. Can you imagine getting out of the pool and having to walk across the street to get into the hot tub? And then back again if you wanted another swim? Ridiculous. But the pool is too small for adults anyway, so I contemplated just using the hot tub alone. Although I guess you could use it like they do in spas, where you do a hot dip and a cold dip alternately. But not here unless you want to take a hike in between your dips. read more

I appreciate a great staycation! This month I chose to travel up and down the coast dining at various places. Including numerous stops at different attractions along the way. My starting point on this trip was Calistoga, Ca working my way down the coast. I reserved two hotels for this trip. One hotel in Salinas and a beachside hotel in Santa Cruz, Ca. The Continental Inn was my Oasis! I was looking for a tranquil, quiet and a relaxing weekend near the boardwalk. I found it here! Checking in is a breeze, the exchange in pleasantries was more than welcoming. People don't communicate anymore. So, it was nice to have someone to take the time out and divulge in a conversation. In talking, I gain a few pointers about the local restaurants in the area. The desk clerk allowed me to choose my room. He gave me a few hints about the rooms on the backside of the hotel. Oh, he was right! The location of my sanctuary was perfect. I felt like I was on a tropical Island. It was like being in the Caribbean with the white shudders on the windows for blinds. Behind those shudders were the most enchanting scenery. Tall trees and large green leaves swayed back and forth. The colors on the walls were soothing. I love the floors. The desk area was big and spacious for me to do a little work, and call a few clients. The bathtub was the perfect size for a long spa bath. I'm happy I brought along a couple of Lush bath bombs. I strolled down to boardwalk to watch the sunset on the beach. I enjoyed this staycation and will be back soon! read more

1. The key cards worked on some entrances, not all, so we had to circle the building carrying our luggage. 2. The blinds of the very small windows don't close fully, and the lights of the walkway do an amazing job of mimicking sunlight, waking me repeatedly through the night. 3. The refrigerator was rusty. Not a little, a lot. There's paint chipping off all the walls, and water damage to the walls in the bathroom. 4. Honestly, we found this place because of a hilariously bad review from a neighboring motel across the street. We needed a room late at night, and for $123 it's been nice. The room is a little beat (scratches on walls, furniture nicks, etc.) but when you're just looking to crash that doesn't really matter too much. The rooms were nice and spacious. Came with a fridge, ironing board, and TV. The bed was super comfortable and overall clean. The bathroom was also spacious and clean. Although the shower was a bit old but did work fine. The walls are also really thin. I could hear others talking through the wall. But it's not uncommon for that to happen with hotel rooms. I would advise for others not to come super late like we did. Although the hotel was super accommodating and there was someone at the desk all night, which was nice, there was no parking when we got there. The whole lot was full, and we had to park across the street in the dark parking lot by the restaurant. It was their overflow parking spot. But since our car was the only one there, I felt uneasy. The area isn't in the safest, so I was nervous about leaving it there overnight. So I suggest finding a spot and leaving it there. But I also noticed the parking spots were really cramped and some parked however they could. The hotel is also dog friendly which was a plus. Also we didn't experience it but looks to be closed to the beach and there were places to eat around there. But for the price, the room was great and it was comfortable. read more

I will say it's OK to sleep for a night or two. The room was not the same as pictured online . The walls need to be repainted , floors mopped. Anything that was metal had rust or discolored. We stayed here on 12/16/23. The hotel staff was very accommodating and went out of their way for us. We were in town for a special event and we did get there before check in time. Also my Boyfriend has a short term disability of walking. I requested a downstairs because of this. Unfortunately there was no queen size downstairs rooms available. So they gave us a king size room. That was the greatest thing they did. The room was amazing overall we had a great stay. Thank you again for a wonderful stay and experience. This hotel, amongst the sea of hotels and motels near Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, is the one we choose to stay at during Labor Day weekend. Prices: fantastic! Cheaper than we are used to. Parking:Free and many spots to choose from. Not a humongous parking lot but fine for our stay. Room:quiet, AC fantastic, clean, spacious enough and did I mention clean? Little desk and a chair, TV, Keurig, 3 pillows (kinda flat but solid), 2 bedside tables with lamps, microwave, mini fridge and tiny open closet. It's just perfect for us 2 and our dog ($30 pet fee). Hot tub in the corner of the parking lot in a cute lil wooden structure. They have a pool but we didn't go in it. The side we stayed on is on the hot tub side. I hear there are rooms across the street as well. Dog friendly, clean, free parking. My dogs crate fit perfectly in the closet space (she has a large dog crate.) Only flaw (nothing major): a patched hole in the bathroom door (fist-sized). I am picky as I've stayed in some places that are sketchy and where I've felt unsafe. I feel very comfortable here. The door has a secure lock and no gaps under or around the door. read more

I've stayed at Continental Inn 2 times in the last 3 months. The second stay was even better than the 1st as I was greeted with kindness and respect. The room I stayed in for 3 nights (104) was clean, comfortable, and bigger than your average hotel room. I felt safe staying on the property and love the location as it's close by great shopping, beautiful bike trails, Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and top notch food. (I ordered from the Chinese restaurant Special Noodle which is next door to the hotel & it was fantastic!) I enjoy getting a hotel room for a few days several times a year and like I've mentioned before on my Google Review, I will definitely stay here again as the price is totally worth it for this hotel. read more

Holiday price $300.00 a night. We stayed two nights to explore some festivities and The Boardwalk. Cute room but floor was still dirty and smelled of smoke. The maid service was great and they helped as much as they were, "allowed" to. We settled in ok, but make sure, you get a top floor. You can hear EVERYTHING upstairs from kids jumping, playing, screaming.... etc.. Also you can hear adults doing what ever they do. Later in the day the toilet backed up and the (owner-female), very rude and not helpful at all. She handed ME the plunger and said, Is there a reason why You can't unstop it?!". I said, "Yes, for $300.00 a night you better find a maintenance man to clean this up, since we were not the ones responsible for YOUR bad pipes." It was cleaned up and all was good. But, please, please do research of closer and better prices. This was outrageously overpriced and not many were available, due to Holiday and Boardwalk overpriced fees! read more

When you brought your concerns to the attention of our staff, all that they were able to do at the time was offer you a different room where heat and the refrigerator would not have been an issue. I do hope you give us another chance to earn your loyalty. We'd love to host you again." Mind you, they charged me the full rate knowing well the rooms heater & refrigerator was not working. I understand charging the full rate for the 2nd room I booked: since everything worked fine in that room but our room had a non working heater & non working smelly refrigerator; I didn't even mention the disgusting microwave since it wasn't an appliance I was interested in using (like the heater & refrigerator) so I turned the other cheek, didn't make a comment about it until now. You state: at the time staff was only able to move us room. Now, it's a different time and you have nothing to offer? SEE comment. The staff said they would bring us extra blankets. That didn't even happen. I was told I would receive a call from mananagmenr; that didn't happen. Only a response here on social media without you even remotely touching on any points on how your hotel failed us. Other than moving us rooms which was a huge inconvenience at est. 11pm with having to walk to the light, wait for it to turn, cross the street to pick up new key cards, walk back, pick up all our stuff after unpacking, when all we wanted to do is rest. As management, you would think all rooms are checked for functionally before deeming a room available for booking. Obviously, management failed to inspect the room; If it was inspected there would be no need to move us rooms in the first place and pleasantly book us in a functioning room. I am a fair person; despite the hotel being a bit run down I am more than willing to pay the full rate for the functioning room but it's unfair not to comp the inadequate room. Give you another chance? Maybe if the situation was handled differently. But the lack of taking accountability is beyond me. Just because that was the only option at the time doesn't mean I have to take it or should be forced to take it. Maybe if it was earlier in the day and not est. 11pm at night with cold weather, weren't in our pajamas, our stuff wasn't all unpacked, and have had to wait at the light cross the street walk back, change clothes, pack our stuff again and move, then maybe changing rooms would have been a solution/ option. So I'm in Santa Cruz for work... been here since mid December. I've stayed Mon-Fri every week. It's a VERY central location. I'm less than 10min from all three of my construction sites. When I decide to stay on weekends, I can walk downtown to the many bars and restaurants but really there's cool places steps away from the hotel. You don't get caught in the boardwalk traffic yet you're practically there. Now look, don't think this is the four seasons but it's not terrible. The staff are all welcoming and they work with you on almost any of your needs. I'll still be here for the foreseeable future. read more

Didn't spend too much time here since we were only here for the one night. Location can be great because it's near downtown, boardwalk, and the freeway is not so far away. However, it can also be bad because it's on a main road with lots of traffic and noise pollution. PROS: - they have a hot tub and a pool. - friendly service. - clean bedrooms. - wonderfully soft beds - my favorite thing about the room. - bathtub - toiletries also come with make up remover (you don't see that often but as someone who wears make up, I can definitely appreciate that gesture). - free parking. CONS: - loud. The surrounding area is noisy. - the pool and the hot tub are located in the opposite building (the hot tub is at the far end of building A and the pool is at the far end of building B - you have to cross the main road to use both) - they have two buildings right across the street from each other but they don't have a connecting bridge or even crosswalk to join the two buildings. You either have to walk down the block to cross the street safely or J walk across a relatively busy street. - even though rooms were comfortable, thy are small and very basic. There is nothing special or unique about it. Overall, I don't mind staying here but if I could, I'd probably go somewhere else. I don't recommend this place for a family, especially on vacation. read more

SO GROSS. Our room reeked of cigarette smoke, which is disgusting and unacceptable, and should have been addressed when the room was "cleaned." Chipped paint on the walls and chipped furniture. Loud and badly-behaved (probably very drunk) men in the next room made it clear that we would not have a peaceful stay. Quickly decided to eat the cost of the room that night, and left immediately. Went down the street to Hotel Paradox, which is a lovely place with amazing amenities. Breathed a sigh of relief as soon as we turned into Paradox's redwood tree-lined parking lot--even their parking lot is more beautiful than anything about Continental Inn. We were stupid to have tried Continental Inn; only picked it because of location and trying to save a little on the price. But in the case of Continental Inn, it's overpriced for what it is--dingy, smelly, aesthetically unappealing, and just an overall feeling of sadness and despair. As we quickly made our way back to the car to escape, noticed the "hot tub" shoved into the corner of the parking lot. The wood hut enclosure looked like it should have been condemned. YUCK. Just one positive thing to say about Continental Inn: the front desk guy was very friendly and nice, which we appreciated. read more
