Dr Watson is ok. I expected to get a John Muir oncologist when my wife went to emergency room but they assign patients to oncologists depending who is on duty that day. The real downside of this practice is they have by far the most unprofessional support staff I have ever encountered in the bay area. I will not go into detail but after leaving several messages for the dr to return my calls, only one request was answered. I also do not care for Dr Watson's partner or her PA staff. Their commitment to patient and family needs is abysmal. My wife has her last appointment with Dr Watson tomorrow. Although I think she is at a stage where there is very little upside, we will be having all future appointments with a Dr in the John Muir Cancer Center. read more

Agree with the one star reviews and adding a recent one. This was the most unprofessional physician appointment I've ever been to. Dr. Sherman's patient manner was awful. Came across as arrogant, zero compassion, had not prepared by reading the case information, materially misread the surgery report & had to be corrected by the patient. Did not explain or ask sufficient questions. Office was messy, outdated and no online form option. He allows his large Weimaraner dog to wander through the office, into the small patient rooms and jump up onto the patient beds without even asking if the patient is ok with dogs. There's more, but to summarize, I was shocked at how bad this was. We promptly went to a different oncologist who is providing a very professional, high quality experience. Dr.Sherman is incredible, empathetic, and really knows how to make people smile even during the worst times! I was refer to Contra Costa Oncology due to my severe anemia by my gynecologist. I am/was having every single symptom (Pica, Tunnel Vision, Fainting, Chronic Sleep, Fatigue, Shortness of breath. My anemia was taking over my entire life. I have had 4 iron infusions (Venofer) on weekly basis and thank god they have been working. I went from 6.2 hemoglobin level to a steady 9. Each time I have gone for an iron infusion the nurses are lovely! They are honest, sincere, and really make you feel special! I haven't had a bad experience with any of them. I have never looked forward to any doctor appts, injections, etc. but with this incredible staff I am at ease each time I go. Sometimes I am cranky because I don't feel good but the staff always seem to know how to make ppl smile. Keep up the good work and to the nurses who have done my infusions-- THANK YOU! Your hard work, empathy, and kindness doesn't go un-noticed. read more

My husband was referred to Dr Sherman by his ENT to be part of the team in this journey to rid him of cancer...and they did a wonderful job! My husband is cancer free! This review is for Dr Sherman and his office. Everyone in this office is professional and extremely friendly. We walked in with the front office ladies greeting us by our names. Not just my husband...me as well. The techs, Nurse Practitioners, nurses, assistants....every person we met were so caring. And Dr Sherman was always professional and kind. We have talked with a couple of friends who had other Oncology Specialists and have not gotten the care my husband received. We thanked Dr Sherman and his staff over and over for the wonderful care. We felt it was a blessing that we were referred to him. And another ridiculous review saying he never wore scrubs only fancy suits?? Why would that matter? But guess what? Thats not true. We never saw Dr Sherman in anything but scrubs...but what does it matter what he wears? He's a great doctor. read more

Dr Sherman was my hematologist back around 2010. He was so kind to me and very professional. I had been to MANY doctors trying to find out what was wrong. He always was the one who came in the room to talk to me and help me feel better by educating me of what was wrong and how he will fix it. . He had made me feel confident that we will fix this issue. His staff was so wonderful and extremely kind to me. Dr Sherman was the only doctor that was able to figure out the problem and he treated me and fixed the problem just like he said he would. I was referred to Dr Sherman before his John Muir Hospital privileges were revoked He examined and treated me for a blood disorder. Sometimes you just get a bad vibe from a person's aura not always accurate but having had several visits the same impressions continued For whatever reason he did not seem genuine, engaged, caring or empathetic. I felt so sorry for his patients sitting in his waiting room with serious life threatening illnesses being likely treated as I felt I was The man may be a superb physician that is not what this is about. When I read too many of these negative yelp reviews I had to weigh in I would be very careful before you sign on with Dr Sherman . He has money to regularly take out ads in Diablo magazine and wears high end suits that I doubt he ever gets out of. I promise you will never see him in scrubs. My impression: It's a business to him first, second and third & oh your care, there's that Don't worry Dr. Sherman doesn't need new patients, he is quite fine thank you very much. I am certain the cherry on top of the sundae is they don't take Medicare, not surprised. To level set I never had family under his care for cancer treatment and I have no ax to grind. I received an inaccurate diagnosis from Dr. Sherman after getting a second opinion from Stanford. I only went to Dr. Sherman because he was referred to me and was close by. Do your research on him to see the poor treatment other reviewers online have mentioned of their experience as well. If you're referred to his office, visit another oncologist and see who you are more comfortable with. I found Dr. Sherman rude and condescending. Ask him to clearly explain why he diagnosed you the way he did. Look at other reviews on the web and find that I wasn't the only one who had a poor experience. read more

This is a review comparing my experience with Dr. Sherman and his Contra Costa oncology offices vs UCSF Oncology. TLDR: You have a choice on who you want to trust your life with. Go to another oncologist before settling with Dr. Sherman, because I guarantee that you are settling for sub-par service. I was referred to Dr. Sherman and went to his office several times. It wasn't until a few visits that I saw his lack of preparation for our meetings and lack of compassion for my diagnosis when talking about next steps. Like another reviewer has mentioned he is very condescending in the way that he'll explain things. I realized that I don't have to settle for Dr. Sherman and his office staff, I can see what other services are out there. UCSF has a top team of Doctors, tools, and resources to help you understand your diagnosis. The office staff at UCSF is incredibly more caring and supportive than Contra Costa Oncology. I would give 0 stars if i could. Horrible customer service from front desk staff. I was attempting to get labs at LabCorp because on the website and on Google, it doesn't say that that LabCorp only services their own patients, essentially a non-public LabCorp. A white, chubby lady, was extremely rude, telling me how I'm the one that waisted her time. When I asked to speak to a manager, she stated no one was there, and asked me to leave. Another bad experience. Labcorp is attached to this oncology office. They no longer take walk in's or appointments from anyone not currently seeing one of their doctors. That would be extremely helpful if they listed that on their website instead of advertising all walk in welcomes no appointments. I have been Dr.Sherman's patient for over 2.5 years now and I wanted to update that nothing has changed - he is a great doctor, and his office and medical staff are second to none. Nothing compares to how it feels, when you are really sick, and having everyone treat you so nicely - like walking into a real life Cheers bar! Not so fun as going out for drinks, but they make it as good as it can be. All of the nurses and techs are so professional, they know what they are doing inside and out, but they make you feel like you are one of their most favorite the patients - and they treat everyone that way! I have never been inclined to give any type of medical office a review but I went to DR Sharma for a hematology appointment while 34 weeks pregnant. From the moment I walked in the receptionist staff was warm and welcoming. The nurse who took my vitals was so friendly and nice and Dr Sharma had clearly reviewed my medical history inside and out before my appointment. She was so friendly and I really felt like I was in capable hands and I've never left a Drs office feeling so comfortable. I highly recommend this group! read more

Dr. Sherman is the most intelligent and brilliant person alive in my opinion. I had stage 3c triple neg breast cancer with mets to the axillary and Supra Clav nodes... almost terminal.. he promised me that he'd not let this evil thing take me yet, as I was only 42 at the time of dx.. this is such an aggressive and fast moving cancer.. I was skeptical.. however after dose dense chemo- surgery and boosted rads.. I am very happy to be here and say in one month ( 5 years ) I can be considered cured from this horrible illness no one should EVER EVER have to go thru.. Miracle? I think it's around 5% luck and 95% having the most awesome and amazing Oncologist ever.. not to mention most of the office staff and nurses . I can't speak for everyone .. but I fully and ALWAYS will respect and admire Dr. Sherman... he's brilliant and I am very , very lucky to have found him .. in more ways than anyone could ever know . My father has been a patient here for a few years. The staff is friendly; the office is nice; and we like his oncologist, but I think they over rely on nurse practitioners (NPs), which has led to my father being unnecessarily hospitalized 2x. I believe these hospitalizations could have been avoided if we had been allowed to speak with or see a doctor instead of being directed to NPs. Both times we were told to wait and see in situations where more attention to what we were saying or expertise could have led to earlier treatment and improvement. As a comparison, I am also a cancer patient. I get treatment at UCSF and also see both NPs and Drs, but I've always felt that my questions and concerns have been given the appropriate level of attention, including times when the nurses have consulted with the Dr as needed. At Contra Costa Oncology, it feels like the staff are directed to refer calls to less expensive practitioners--nurses, or, if you insist on speaking to a dr, a more junior dr, and that for whatever reason the NPs don't escalate situations appropriately. My assumption is that these are profit increasing measures to the detriment of their patients. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. Being diagnosed with cancer is a scary feeling, but everyone on staff here does her/his best to make you feel "normal." The office is a calm place with fish tanks...and that takes your mind somewhat off your ordeal. They have a couple of Nemos here! Dr. Superfin is a very warm person...Nancy in the chemo lab is wonderful...Laura, Lisa, Priscilla, Kelly, Jennifer, Cindy, Summer, and everyone else. ...just can't praise them enough! I feel as if I have just left a good therapy appointment when I leave here. While I hope you never have to use Contra Costa Oncology, if you do, you will be in good hands. Wonderful staff here. They've been taking care of me since 2005 and I love them. Dr. Sherman is the smartest guy and I am lucky to have him on my team. He is on the pulse of oncology medicine. Beautiful office. My chart is huge here and there is never a concern that anyone is unfamiliar with my situation. Staff is always friendly, calls me by my name...feels like good friends. Re: Don V & waiting for an appointment. Many times I waited to be called in for appointments. The other side of the equation here is I was never rushed through my 15 minute billable appointment. All inquiries or questions were answered thoroughly even repeated for me sometimes when I couldn't get my head around certain concepts. So I guess it's my fault you had to wait. Also, whenever I had a pressing concern I needed answered quickly I would call for input and was put through to the Dr -who was with a patient. This also would occur sometimes when I was in the middle of an appointment. No problem for me. The patient comes first in this office. For everyone else: I concur with all the other reviews. I looked at their credentials one day (in a binder in the waiting room. ) Some brilliant docs. Btw Dr Superfin was my doctor. Excellent. read more

Yesterday was six years since my husband and I learned that Dr. Sherman had misdiagnosed me with Stage IV kidney cancer metastasized to my lungs. The prognosis was grim and I had to tell my children I was terminally ill. The problem was that Dr Sherman went only by my history of kidney cancer from years before and some of the tests. But he did not wait for biopsy results which we got 6 weeks later, before announcing that I had metastatic cancer. He was wrong, wrong, wrong. And when he got the biopsy results, he actually seemed disappointed. I would never recommend him to anyone after that experience. It took me 6 years to write this, but that misdiagnosis had such a negative affect on my life. I will never forget it. read more

This man has had his hospital privledges revoked based on disruptive behavior toward female co-workers. He is also considerably inept at helping people with cancer. His recommendations for chances of survival are lower then compared to a competent Oncologist. This should be a crime in itself. All he basically did when I saw him was shove paper at me and he advised I had only about a 50/50 chance at survival. The overall impression I got was he wanted to sell his chemo, not help me. I would never go back to him. There are too many other Oncologists out there that are very good at what they do. read more

The Doctor and nurse both wrote out the wrong prescription this week...thank goodness Costco pharmacy caught the error. After taking one dose, I thought something wasn't right and Costco fixed it...I'm 36 weeks pregnant. Do not go to this office if you are pregnant and seeking treatment for blood disorders. Dr. Sherman is a gentleman and a scholar. He treated me for a blood disorder which initially presented itself as leukemia. It was a very scary time for me but he and his staff were very kind, patient, and helpful throughout the process which involved Dr. Sherman spending a lot of time and energy on "detective work". When he reached a diagnosis, he then had to convince my insurer that the treatment he had proposed for me was not "experimental" even though it was rare. He did this by submitting reams of supporting paperwork including articles copied from medical journals. There were countless phone calls with my insurer as well. Lots of red tape, and he- together with his able staff- cut through it all. The disorder is in remission now so I just go to the office for a check-up twice a year but Lisa (billing/reception) and Steve (P.A.) always greet me personally and remember to inquire about my family and activities. I've always felt this is a special place populated by special people. I'm sure many outcomes aren't as happy as mine, so I'm especially grateful for Dr. Sherman and his staff. I was here yesterday. I drive folks for volunteer, and for making money. When I was here yesterday, for the first time I found out that some superhero's work here: Wonder Women, Batwomen, and some other characters like the Pink Ladies from Grease. So...actually, a whole bunch of the employees were dressed in costumes cause today is Halloween, that proves to me that people in this office are fun and professional. Michael Sherman MD has many impressive credentials from some fancy ivy league universities, but my personal experience with Dr. Sherman unfortunately was disappointing. It seems to me that he is unfocused and his train of thought wanders. i was surprised because there are so many good reviews about him. I have seen him on three or four occasions in his w/c office in the last four years so it wasn't just a bad day he was having. He is always in a rush, indecisive, and quite frankly I think he is unsure of himself & his diagnosis. That's what scares me the most. I feel he questions himself and suffers from some sort of attention disorder. If I had to describe him I would have to say he reminds me of an eccentric artist. Just being in his presence makes me nervous because he goes from one subject to the other without listening to your answer about the first subject. It's time for me to move on. read more

If I could give less than 1 star I would. DO NOT go to this man! I don't know how the other reviewers came up with their ratings - particularly the patient who met Dr. Sherman in the ER. I don't know what ER this was but since Dr. Sherman privileges at John Muir were revoked - it was not there! Of course, this was a fact he neglected to mention during our interview. I am posting a rather short review now as we are still in shock over our daughter's death - but we felt it important to prevent others from putting their lives in this Incompetent man's care. Dr. Sherman seemed very caring during our initial interview appointment. Little did we know that we would never see him again after that. Despite telling changes in our daughter's condition, he never once saw her - requests to talk with him or get an office appointment were always put off to his office staff (yes staff - not even medical personnel!). He did not consider that her condition had changed and needed different care - in fact he could not have known as he didn't bother to respond to her in any way. The final straw with him was the day our daughter had a seizure in his office following a chemo treatement. Despite the fact that he was there and I requested his attention, he never came out of his office. After waiting with our daughter in a wheel chair for 30 minutes, we gave up, put her in the car and drove her to the hospital where she was immediately admitted. Under Dr. Sherman's care, our daughter went from stage 1B to stage 4 in 4 months! Completely undetected by him. It was not until we changed oncologists that we discovered her decline and the rapid spread of the cancer. I should also tell you that attempts by the radiogy oncologist to reach Dr. Sherman went unanswered as well. In short - if you value your life DO NOT use Dr. Sherman. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Sherman for 7 years. I met him in the ER. I was acutely ill and was experiencing severe internal bleeding. I was scared to death. I had been to Stanford for a work up two years prior for a similar bleeding episode and was told I was fine and that my previous incident of bleeding was just a "fluke". I will never forget Dr. Sherman coming to my bedside in the ER, looking straight into my eyes and telling me that he had a plan of action and that he wouldn't let me leave the hospital until we knew for sure what had caused these bleeding episodes. His confidence allowed me to relax and not be so fearful during a very scary time. From that initial meeting in 2006 until now, I remain a very grateful patient. I have never felt rushed in his office and I always feel to be in expert hands. His expertise and knowledge are remarkable. His staff? Oh MY Goodness!! I have never been to any other medical office that from right when you walk in the door you feel such love. They seem to know every patient's name on arrival and you can be sure that a smile awaits you. I have always felt like I was being treated special until I noticed that ALL of their patients are treated with such kindness and grace I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Sherman and his staff. Dr. Sherman, is an amazing doctor! I was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. Four days after my diagnosis my husband and I met with Dr. Sherman. From the moment we met him, we felt safe and knew I was in capable hands. Dr. Sherman put a plan of action in place for my treatment and we moved forward with it. As brilliant as he is, he found a way to explain things to me in a way I that I would understand, even if that included drawing pictures for me. He always had time to answer any concerns or questions I may have had, as did Kathleen. I never felt rushed in any of my appointments or, after hour phone calls. Dr. Sherman's staff are unbelievably kind. Kathleen is so knowledgeable and tender. Many a time Kathleen laughed with me to share my joy and cried to share my worries. Lisa, such a loving sweet person, is a treasure, as is Laura and Lanie. All of my nurses were wonderful too. Whenever I walk into the office I am always greeted by a smile and welcome word. I can't imagine not having these special people in my life. They have been there to help mange my fears with loving hands and hearts. I truly will never be able to thank Dr. Sherman or his staff who have since become lifelong friends, for helping me through my circumstance. There will NEVER be enough ways for me to thank him. I have since moved to another State but still fly back to be seen by Dr. Sherman. For me, no one compares to Dr. Sherman or his staff; they are all wonderfully smart, compassionate and kinds human beings. I thank God everyday day for them. read more
