I will be back soon, because I already miss the Contramar fish!!!! I had an amazing experience at this location with great food, great cocktails and great service. I had the Jamaica mezcal cocktail 10/10, Aguachile 10/10 with a little spice, and the Contramar fish 10000/10. I had outdoor seating next to beautiful greenery and a view of the city. This was my favorite meal from my trip and can't wait to go back for more.

Best meal we had in CDMX. So touristy, but popular for a reason. The tuna tostadas and the shrimp tacos were our favorite. The fish is the most popular dish here, but we found the flavors to just be okay. I still dream about the tuna tostadas. We walked in on a Monday right at opening and were seated immediately. Great service as well!

The Contramar pescado a la talla was my favorite dish. It was flavorful and fresh. The aguachile verde was also a good choice. I liked the acidity from the lime and the flavor of the raw onions, which brightened up the dish. On the other hand, the Contramar ceviche was decent, and I wouldn't order it again. The restaurant is a popular tourist destination, and the pricing does not fully align with the overall quality of the food, so it feels pricey for what you get. Due to its popularity, it's best to arrive early or make a reservation, since the restaurant tends to get busy.

Best meal in Mexico City!!! Started with pina coladas. Our favorite dish collectively was the tuna tostados followed by the scallop ceviche. The only thing that just just OK was the daily fish. Absolutely would recommend this place as a MUST TRY. Javier our waiter was AMAZING.

Contramar is a seafood restaurant located in the Roma Norte neighborhood of Mexico City. It opened in 1998 and has a lively atmosphere although it was a little dim. Reservations are highly recommended but I was not able to secure one ahead of time. We came right at opening and were fortunately able to get seated for our large group. AGUACHILE VERDE DE CAMARON ($365 MXN) - this was decent and slightly spicy although I preferred the other dishes more. 3.5/5 CEVICHE CONTRAMAR ($365) - the fish was slightly tough but was fresh and refreshing. 4/5 SASHIMI DE ATUN ($435) - this was delicious and not fishy at all. I really liked the jalapeño and cilantro that balanced the fish. 5/5 TOSTADAS DE ATUN ($420) - we had both the shrimp and tuna tostadas but we all preferred the tuna. This was another favorite of ours. 5/5 PESCADO A LA TALLA CONTRAMAR ($810) - this is the iconic red and green fish dish that so many people get. This took about 45 minutes to arrive but was worth it. The fish was soft and melted in my mouth. I liked the red sauce (adobo) more than the green (parsley) but both were good. Beware there are still might be some bones but they were mostly gone. 5/5 For drinks I had the mezcalita ($220) which were really good and not too smoky. I also tried the paloma ($215) which was good as well. It was a great meal and my favorite during our time in Mexico City. Because it's very popular with tourists it might seem too touristy or mainstream but it looked to be pretty popular with locals as well.

We were not sure we'd be able to get in without a reservation but we thankfully did. What an absolutely fantastic dining experience...the best on our trip. The service was hands down one of the best we've ever had. I think we counted 3 or 4 servers tending to our table several times and at least 1 person always monitoring our table. We only had to wait 20 minutes for a table. This place is busy with people from everywhere. The ambience is fine dining feel but casual attire is acceptable. Very easy to engage with everyone at table as noise level is surprisingly not too loud given the amount of patrons. We had a variety of dishes and all of them were delicious...but the fish tacos stole the show. The best fish tacos we've ever had...period. The shrimp tacos and fish plate were very good. The aqua chile and ceviche and salsas were delicious. The cheesecake desert was fantastic! We would have gone back if we had more time.

Booked ahead for lunch a few weeks in advance and yes it holds up. Aguachile was actually my fave dish, followed by the sopes sencillos and fig tart. Tuna tostada and carajillo are also worth getting. Dessert tray goes crazy - I almost got the lemon tart too but was too full. Also loved the complimentary pickled onions!!

We had reservations for our party of 6 at 7pm on a Thursday and thankfully so, because this place was busy. The restaurant is rather lively and energetic, but the dim lighting, white linens, and large windows give it a slightly more elevated experience. Most of the dishes were pretty easy to share for parties of 4+. I would actually recommend coming here with more people to be able to try more. For our party, we ordered: AGUACHILE VERDE DE CAMARON: This was a solid and refreshing bite. It was a hit or miss for my table, but I personally really enjoyed it. The citrus marinade balanced the sweetness of the shrimp. Went down very easily with the tortilla chips that came with it. TOSTADAS (CAMARON, CALLO, ATUN): We ordered all the options of tostadas they had that day and the shrimp was definitely my favorite. Tuna is a close second, but I could've done without the scallop. The scallops were a bit tough, while the other two tostada were silky, bright and very fresh. The tuna was marinaded in a soy sauce blend, while the shrimp was more mayo based -- both very different, but the contrast was quite pleasant and well-executed. PESCADO A LA TALLA: An absolute must at this establishment. This was a whole deboned snapper (beautifully butterflied, might I add) with a red adobo rub on one side and green parsley rub on the other -- incredibly tender and flavorful. My personal favorite was the green parsley rub, because of its fresh and herby flavors. We were provided soft tortillas (blue corn and white), mole, salsa, lime and onions to make tacos with the fish or you could just eat it as is. If there's anything you need to order, it's this. PULPO A LA GALLEGA: A bit disappointing because I found the octopus a bit fishy. Also found it a bit bland considering that it was poached. Maybe I just prefer en la brasa more, but at least the texture of the pulpo was pleasant. TARTA DE HIGOS: Do not sleep on the desserts here! Our friend raved about the fig tart and we fought hard to get the last one of the night, which just shows how popular this item is. The fig tart was fresh, adequately sweet and paired so well with the buttery crust. The strawberry meringue is allegedly very good too, but we held off since we were stuffed from this meal. Great experience -- friendly staff, good cocktails, fresh seafood!

One word to describe this experience: disappointing. As a preface, the service was outstanding. Our waiter, Ramon, was very kind and attentive, as was the manager. Beyond that, everything was shockingly mid! To start, we had the tuna and shrimp tostadas, which were quite good. As our main course, we had the pescado a la talla estilo contramar, which I was very excited about. The presentation was beautiful, and the waiter showing us how to serve the fish was a nice touch. HOWEVER, upon trying the food, we found that the fish was lukewarm and shockingly flavorless. Given Contramar's popularity and how highly regarded it is, I was expecting an explosion of flavor. The level of blandness was mind boggling. I swear they didn't put even a pinch of salt on the fish. I said something because it was shockingly bad. Thankfully, they brought another one out which I thought was better, albeit nothing that makes my mouth water thinking about it now. So me and my boyfriend were really holding out hope for the dessert. We're long distance (DC to CDMX) so every dinner we have together matters more, and I was really praying that the dinner would end on a high note. Unfortunately, they were OUT of the strawberry merengue. I will admit I was so disappointed that a few tears were shed. We ended up getting the fig tart that I liked but my boyfriend didn't. At least we bonded on the walk home--30 minutes of complaining! I would advise anyone reading this to pass on contramar unless you want to pay thousands of pesos to be disappointed.

Phenomenal experience at Contramar. Everything was to our liking. Took a chance on walking in without an appointment and we're lucky enough to get seated in 2 minutes. Had to try all the suggested samples. All seafood options were delectable. The adobe white fish was one of the best things we had all week. Simple put, if you come here you have to get the fish two ways. Delicate, flakey, and flavorful. Incredible service. I felt like there was always someone in the atmosphere prepared for everything anyone needed. Snagged outdoor seating but the inside was all hustle and bustle. Servers in dinners doing a dance. Lovely experience.

This place is worth all the hype! I didn't know what to expect. We went for an early lunch and decided to try a few dishes. It's a beautiful restaurant. First, the sopes are very good. Teeny tiny but tastes delicious. They were very simple with black beans, sour cream, queso fresco, and lettuce. I recommend adding the green and red salsa! Second, the fish pastor taco is probably the best pastor taco I have had ever had. You forget it's fish and I was so shocked how good it was. Third, the tuna tostada was AMAZING. The tuna is so fresh. Avocado and some fried onions. I added some lime and salsa. It's so delicious. Fourth, the Contramar fish was perfectly cooked with a green and red salsa. The red salsa was my favorite. It was served with refried beans and corn tortillas. I made some tacos with the fish and the side of beans. Delicious! Fifth, for desert we had the fig tart, which was very light and was not too sweet. Perfect with tea. The staff were so friendly and attentive. Shout out to Daniela, she was so sweet. Contramar, give her a raise, she's the best. I will be back!

Contramar is packed, vibrant, and loaded with yummy dishes on the menu. Service was good and the food didn't take long to come out. We got the tuna tostados to share, which were delicious. Very refreshing and the tuna tasted nice and fresh. I myself got the pasta con almejas, which was tasty and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I had a few bites of their hit dish: pescado à la talla contramar. The fish was beautifully cooked and wonderfully spiced and seasoned. I can tell why the whole fish is what they're known for. Overall, one of the best spots I've tried in Mexico City.

Contramar by Chef Gabriela Camara focuses on fresh seafood, and I was a big fan after my first visit here years ago. Since then, however, the restaurant has become more touristy, and the dining experience wasn't as impressive as before. The iconic dishes were all still on the menu--the Tuna Tostada was made of thin slices of raw tuna in a soy marinade, paired with chipotle mayo, crispy leeks, and avocado, and was both delicate yet flavorful. The Ceviche Contramar was a subtle combination of chopped raw white fish in leche de tigre; but I was a bigger fan of the Aguachile Verde, made of raw shrimps in an acidic green salsa. The highlight dish was, of course, the Pescado à la Talla, a whole deboned and butterflied snapper flavored with red adobo rub on one side and a green parsley rub on the other. The flavorful fish was perfect for making tacos in their fresh, chewy corn tortillas, paired along with mashed black beans, avocado salsa, pickled onions, and lime. And after we finished our meal, the waiter brought out an entire tray of enticing desserts--how could we refuse? We got the Fig Tart, made with sliced figs on a sour cream cheese base and an almond crust! Everything we had was delicious, though the service was less attentive than on my prior visits (as the restaurant has gotten extremely busy), and the prices were high for the portion sizes.
This is an exceptional restaurant. They specialize in seafood. Everything is fresh and delicious. The service here is first class. Servers are attentive, friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and make excellent suggestions. If you are looking for the best of CDMX cuisine then look no further than Contramar. Double highly recommend. read more
Delicious! Very good seafood options. Food: had 2 different ceviches, tuna tostada, tuna/shrimp tacos and the fish quesadilla. Would recommend everything but the fish quesadilla, had a lot of fishy flare that did not sit well with me. Ambiance: we sat outside, service was great. read more
Only knock is the crowded vibe and service. It seems like the owners are greedy with how many tables they put together. Pues, here's the food review: Japanese oysters 9/10 - they're usually smaller elsewhere Best tostadas de atun I've ever had. Crispy and the fish was perfect texture. 10/10 Shrimp tacos 7/10 - not salted well. Tuna croquette 7.5/10 - kinda dry Contramar fish 7/10 - I wanted to like it but it was also not well salted and it was dry. read more

Service- outstanding! Everyone was extremely nice and attentive. I also had my luggage and they were kind enough to store it during my meal. Edgar was our waiter and he was super awesome! Food- one of my favorite meals while in Mexico City! We didn't order much because we were full from a meal before but ordered what we could. What we got: MUST HAVE AGAIN: 1. If you like octopus: Tacos de carnitas de pulpo (fried octopus carnitas). This didn't seem fried but oh my gosh it was SO tender and fresh and flavorful! Our whole table LOVED this. Highly recommend. 2. Scallop tostadas!! SO fresh/refreshing! 3. Fig Tart- It was so good! Tasted kind of like a fig cheesecake. We heard it was the most popular desert and got lucky because our waiter Edgar saved it for us!! Thank you so much Edgar! Tasty but would go for something else next time: 1. Tacos de esmedregal al pastor: Al pastor fish, onions, cilantro, pineapple I didn't get the soft shell crab taco but heard it was delicious so thought I'd toss that here! read more

The food was great, we got the famous girlled fish and tuna tostadas. The grilled fish has 2 different rubs (half adobo and half green sauce), which were flaky, and tasted great. My favorite was the tostadas, which had the perfect amount of meat and sauce and were fantastic with a squeeze of lemon. The service was surprisingly fast on a Sunday evening. The setting was great as well; it was definitely a high-end spot. As a warning, this is a pricy spot, and not necessarily worth the price. I am sure that with a little more research, other spots in CMX have better fish and are more affordable. As an example, they charged 8 USD for a bottle of water and the total bill came out to ~$95, which I was surprised by, and I would not be going again. But if you are looking for an Instagram spot, this is the one for you. read more
Apparently it's hard to get reservations here, i probably got seated immediately because i was solo. It was packed inside and out, i saw this place in most of instagram recommendations The tuna Tostadas tasted perfect. Not sure if it's the sauce or some sort of salt but automatically regretted getting only 2. Why not just make a whole meal of these? And they came 2 mins after ordering them The fish tacos were just good but anything would've been a let down after those tostadas. This might've been my favorite restaurant in Mexico City overall. I was too full to order more than these two options but they were great overall More friendly wait staff who sent me someone who spoke English to help me as well. I'm mad i didn't come back here before leaving read more
Love this place! We come here whenever we're in Mexico City. The tuna tostadas and ceviche are amazing -- we order them every time. The sopes and shrimp broth soup are just okay. It's worth making a reservation but when we've gone off hours we've gotten a table after just a short wait. read more
This is a packed, bustling place for dinner, even with its large dining room and sidewalk seating. Make reservations! Then, allow the friendly staff to bring as many items from the menu as you can handle. Come with a group so you can share. An absolute must is the whole fish done à la Contramar, one side of the split fish coated in a punchy parsley sauce and the other in a red adobo rub. Served with flour tortillas (which are refillable) and black bean dip, you'll be instructed how to compose perfect bites. Then, choose your own adventure! We also had both the 4 piece each shrimp tostadas and tuna tostadas. Radically different so getting both doesn't duplicate. The pasta (spaghettini) with clams was buttery and garlicky and the pasta was surprisingly not overcooked. Biggest surprise was the grilled soft shell crabs (with corn tortillas). They came pre cut then reassembled so it was easy to pick them up and pop them in your mouth. The grill flavor was fantastic and we were all impressed. We finished with a slice of coconut cake which was like a caramel coated macaroon. Perfect! Large wine list by the glass and bottle, many cocktails, sangria and beer to choose from. Definitely a place to visit when in Mexico City. Sorry for the lack of photos-- we forgot because we dove into each dish (we were hungry and they looked so good)! Got one good one though... read more
We had a lively meal with delicious food and outstanding service. I wanted to order the whole fish but the waiter urged me not to as it was too large a portion. He brought a fish out for me to look at so I could see for myself it was too much. He urged me to order the fillet and brought two sauces. We had oysters that were tiny but sweet and fabulous desserts. My coconut flan was superb. My husband's strawberry short cake was obscene. Best meal we've had and worth every read more
This place is YU-MMY! I went with a group of seafood lovers and we were all very happy. Portions are perfect for sharing, lovely plating, and some flavors we've never tried before that surprised us! The service was the right amount of attentive- and even though we had a girl with us who had a fish allergy, she never got sick or flared up in any way and the wait staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and what she could/couldn't have. That's truly kind, because a lot of places would have laughed at her for coming into a seafood restaurant at all. read more

AMAZING! One of our favorite meals on our trip We tried the ceviche, fish tacos, tuna tostada and fig cake. All were incredible and would order again. Not going to lie, we were very skeptical of how Contramar would be considering all the hype and were so glad to be proved wrong. We were seated appropriately for our reservation time and our waiter was very polite and not pushy. The Tuna Tostada is as advertised! While the slice of tuna maybe super thin, it is packed with flavor and the dried garlic strains are a very nice touch. We also got the crudo was pretty good. The Aguachile however was quite average. The Contramar fish was very tasty and made a nice entree to share with the table. The dessert table side presentation was awesome and the flan was delicious. All in all, We had a wonderful early dinner while sitting outside and enjoying a nice Mexican wine to pair with all the food. Credit to these guys for keeping the food top notch despite all the hype! read more

A strong contender for my favorite meal in the city, which is saying something because CDMX is a great food city! I'd definitely look into making a reservation, it gets busy! Tuna Tostada and Pescado a la Talla... fresh, flavorful, fantastic. The Tostada was bright and citrusy. The Pescado was so unique, perfectly cooked, very well-seasoned. I thought the dessert was skippable... eat more fish instead. read more
Fantastic Seafood Feast in Roma Norte! What a fun and flavorful spot! This lively restaurant in Roma Norte buzzes with energy from the moment you walk in. We kicked things off with a margarita on the rocks -- perfectly balanced with bright lemon-lime flavor and just the right kick. The octopus tacos were a total standout -- tender, smoky, and grilled to perfection. The salsa on top brought the whole dish to life. Next came the breaded fish -- crisp, golden, and unbelievably fresh. You could taste the ocean in every bite. And dessert? Don't even think about skipping it. The strawberry meringue cake was airy, sweet, and simply dreamy. We're already planning to come back for that alone! The service was amazing. We had three waiters taking care of us. Very friendly and at the same time professional. Buen provecho, amigos -- this place is a fiesta for your taste buds! read more
I came back to Contramar on my recent trip to Mexico City with my friends who were first-timers! Contramar is such a big name in the CDMX culinary scene so I had to take them here. We walked-in without a reservation about 30 min before their closing time online and were seated promptly. To share we ordered a bottle of local white wine, tuna tostadas, grilled octopus appetizer, and of course the stunning grilled red snapper with adobo and parsley rubs. My favorite had to the fish which was cooked perfectly so that the meat came off the bone so easily and the smoky adobo and fresh parsley rubs were so flavorful and great wrapped in tortillas with black bean sauce as a base. The tuna tostada this time around really wowed me with the flavor. The fried tostada was nicely fried and topped with the tuna, crispy leeks and avocado, the flavor was great and the bites of tuna tostada packed so much flavor. The octopus and potato appetizer was yummy as well and satisfied our craving for pulpo without having to order the entree. The only complaint I have is that we felt very rushed by our server through the meal. He kept taking away plates even before we had completely finished them and tried to take away the fish even when there was half left. This made us fairly uncomfortable and he was pushy with the dessert as well (we had to say we were full multiple times before he took away the dessert options). I understand they were closing up but there were several tables around us still eating and drinking and we felt like we were singled out a bit. It's always a shame when service distracts from the food itself. read more
Absolutely worth the hype! Friendly service, cute quaint interior, amazing food and drinks. We walked up on a Thursday at noon for our first stop in the city and were able to get seated at the bar right away. The chips and salsa were delicious, especially with my mezcalita cocktail. We got the octopus to start - it had a nice spice on top and had some potatoes in the dish. The tuna tostadas are one of their most famous dishes, and it certainly was fresh and flavorful. We loved the battered fish tacos the best though - this really hit the spot for that Mexican seafood craving. What a fun lunch! read more

Amazing dinner experience. Be sure to get a reservation at least a week in advance, otherwise walk in is difficult. Tostados were amazing and so were to soft sell crab tacos. The dessert spread was decadent and there were so many choices. Would recommend the strawberry cake, fig tart and chocolate cake for dessert! Will be back if I'm ever in CDMX again! read more
Oh Contramar ! We were so worried about trying to snag a reservation, at any time, day or night with no luck. On the day we arrived, 12/28, with a huge crowd outside, we said "let's just put our name on the list & see what happens" The 45 minute wait turned out to be less than 10 minutes and we had a lovely table for 2 right at the window/door. Would I tell someone who was not able to dine here that they missed something amazing ? No, not at all. CDMX is packed with amazing dining options. We did adore the Tuna Tostados and wound up craving them and stopping into Entremar later in the week to have them again. A truly memorable bite. We also enjoyed the 1/2 adobo 1/2 parsley whole fish, eh, was it the best whole fish i have ever had ? No, far from it, but I did like the idea of the freshly made, soft, warm tortilla's to wrap the pieces of fish in. Never experienced that before, and it is a nice touch, like making your own tacos. Loved all the accouchements of limes, refried beans & that green sauce that is everywhere, too. The setting itself, wow, so plain & simple, LOUD !! A bit chaotic. Nothing like I expected. I don't think I would return other than for the tuna which remains one of the best things we ate twice, in CDMX. read more
We came here after visiting another spot the day before. That we loved and wanted to keep trying different seafood places around the city. We made a reservation and showed up to find the place packed. We were seated, but it was pretty tight. We asked for water, which wasn't free--that's when we started realizing how expensive things were. We couldn't find shrimp ceviche on the menu, so the waiter recommended another dish, which we ordered. It was $20 and... eh, it was just okay. We weren't really feeling the ambiance, the crowd, or the prices. Since we didn't enjoy the appetizer, we decided to close out and head somewhere else. Overall, I can't really speak to the entrees since we didn't stay for a full meal. But if you do plan to come, definitely make a reservation, and just be prepared--it's going to be crowded and pricey. read more
Phenomenal from start to finish. We were told so many times that we needed to make a reservation and that this place fills up but we walked up with no reservation and were seated instantaneously. We were seated outside right next to the host stand but really didn't mind. The inside looked like one big room with a bunch of tables next to each other. Feels very scene-y. The food and service were both fantastic. I think the best thing was the tuna tostada, but to be honest, everything was incredible. This feels like a place you've gotta visit when in CDMX read more
If you love seafood I highly recommend Contramar. This is a popular restaurant amongst tourists and locals and for good reason. The quality of seafood is incredible and there's plenty of options for everyone. I recommend making a reservation as it can be busy but during the day I came, there were plenty of walk-ins as well. To start, I got the lime mezcal margarita. Mexico is known for mezcal so I had to get one. The drink was perfect. Nicely balanced with tartness from the lime and the smoky flavor from the mezcal. For food I ordered a few things. I got the tuna tostadas which were very good. Pair it with some habanero and lime and you are set. I ordered the special of the day which was snail Aguachile. Absolutely delicious and perfect for those who like snails. Ordered two tacos: octopus and shrimp as well as the king fish al pastor. Both were amazing. Finished off my meal with the mango meringue. Everything here is delicious, you can't go wrong with anything. The customer service was top notch as well. Probably some of the best I've had in Mexico City thus far (apart from Michelin starred restaurants). The inside is dimely lit for a romantic atmosphere and there are tables outside as well. read more

Definitely a tourist trap! It was so hard to get reservations, food was not great, cost was not worth it. But Servers are extremely friendly. We came for lunch and ordered 4 dishes and a dessert. All of the dishes fell flat and/or bland on flavor, even the infamous fig tart was a huge disappointment. And, this lunch cost more than our Michelin star dinners in CDMX. It's absolutely ridiculous!!! Do not go, do not trust these reviews. Go anywhere else, definitely not worth your time or money. read more
I'm not sure what I can say about this restaurant that hasn't already been said by more famous people than me. I'm looking at you, Eva Longoria. Chef Gabriela Cámara has created a fun, buzzy atmosphere that offers amazing food and attentive service. Unfortunately, I have recently developed an allergy to shrimp and possibly all shellfish, so this made ordering somewhat scary for me in a restaurant that specializes in seafood. The Mr. and I relied on our server to help us navigate the menu safely. We ordered the tuna tostados, a watercress and napales salad, the Ceviche Contramar, and the famous red and green fish. Everything was delicious. We didn't really have room for dessert, but once we saw the dessert tray, we couldn't resist ordering the fig tart and the apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Both were really good, but that apple tart was the best I have ever had. This was an incredible meal and experience from start to finish! Reservations are a must -- this place is popular for a reason! read more

Incredible seafood dining experience, simply a must for any CDMX trip! Staff are all very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about their extensive menu and daily specials. Our favorites included the white clam ceviche and the grilled fish! read more
When planning our trip to CDMX, Contramar came up a few times and was recommended by friends and research alike. I had trouble booking an interview online, but saw some suggestions that if you email them directly they are typically able to accomodate, which is exactly what I did and was very easy. We arrived a bit early to check out the area and could clearly see how busy and popular it was. We also had a chance to check out their store next door that had lots of fun cooking goods from seasonings, oils, Mezcal as well as some other fun trinket stuff and branded sweatshirts, hats, etc. We were seated promptly, and when I say this place is packed, IT IS PACKED. Not one table is empty from the bar, to outdoor patio area, oddly enough It doesn't feel too overwhelming and is still comfortable. After a few days of nonstop eating and lots of fatty and heavy items, we were looking for a seafood forward and lighter meal, which is exactly what Contramar offers, fabulous seafood. I wish we had room for more, but we got the tuna tostadas, the tuna hamachi and the ceviche. All of them were fabulous, I think the tuna tostadas were our favorite, but it was all delicious and the also leave chips, a fresh green salsa and some other accoutrements on the table. We also had a couple cocktails, including a mezcal cocktail, espresso cocktail and their carajillo. We ended the evening with their fig tarte, which paired perfectly with the carajillo, sort of like an espresso martini, but with espresso and a Mexican liquor. The tarte was light, just sweet enough and a great ending to our meal. The service was top tier, they definitely have a team system going on, but everyone was so friendly. Though the prices are very reasonable, this was one of our more expensive meals while visiting CDMX. Roughly $125 after tip for our three shared plates, three cocktails and dessert. I wish I had more room to enjoy some of their other offerings, but until next time! read more
SO GOOD! BEST SEAFOOD! While checking on Yelp for a place to have dinner near our hotel I came upon Contramar. Tried making a reservation online with no luck, so I contacted the restaurant and they stated their soonest available was in ONE MONTH. Bummed out we still decided to stop by and check with them for walk-ins. Fortunately, they had a cancellation and we were able to score a table outside with no wait, but moral of the story, BOOK IN ADVANCE! This place gets packed!! I have to admit, they're 100% worth the hype. We ordered: * Pulpo a las brasas: Grilled octopus with sweet potato & chile meco adobo * Camarones al gusto: Sauteed shrimp with garlic * Pescado a la talla: Whole grilled fish with Contramar rubs (half with red adobo rub & half with parley rub) The food is incredible and the service is top notch. I definitely recommend this place in Mexico City!

Our recent lunch at Contramar was an experience we'll cherish for a long time. This renowned restaurant in Mexico City has truly lived up to its reputation, and then some. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance of Contramar set the stage for what was an exceptional dining experience. The vibrant and welcoming atmosphere was just the beginning of a memorable meal. The service at Contramar was impeccable. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about their offerings. They made excellent recommendations and ensured our dining experience was smooth and enjoyable. Now, onto the star of the show - the food. Each dish we tried was a testament to the culinary prowess of Contramar. The flavors were bold, fresh, and beautifully balanced, showcasing the best of Mexican cuisine. The ingredients were top-quality, and the presentation of each dish was a visual delight. One of the highlights was the freshness of the seafood, which was apparent in every bite. Whether it was the ceviche, the tacos, or the grilled fish, everything tasted like it was caught just hours before serving. It's clear why Contramar is acclaimed for its seafood dishes. The overall experience at Contramar for lunch was nothing short of spectacular. It's a must-visit for anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience in Mexico City. The combination of the lively atmosphere, outstanding service, and culinary excellence makes Contramar a standout. We can't recommend it enough and are already looking forward to our next visit! read more

I've eaten a lot of good food in my life and this is some of the best. Grilled octopus and tuna tostadas were OUT OF THIS WORLD. Octopus was impeccably fresh, tender and grilled just enough to get a bit of crust for texture. I had leftover salsa and when airport security wanted to confiscate it on the way home, I nearly caused an international incident. Tuna tostadas were exactly perfect - 4 ingredient dishes might seem simple, but that means the quality and ratios need to be ON POINT to achieve perfection. Contramar nails it with the right amount of wonderful raw tuna, crisp corn tostada, avocado and a bit of onion to absolutely nail this dish. Bravo. In comparison, the "Fish Contramar" (like the one named after their restaurant) was merely "very good." Desserts look wonderful, but not at the expense of ordering like 3 more orders of tostadas. (I am going on a bit, but holy sh*t, they were perfection) Ambiance is a good mix of white tablecloth luxury with bustling background noise. They are permanently packed (for good reason). Forget reservations (they only offer a small % on OpenTable) and just go, put your name down for lunch and go for a walk for an hour around Roma Norte. Service A+ too. Very attentive and other tables were free to chat after the meal and not be hurried out the door. I felt like a rockstar when the waiter gave me just the right approving nod (and Obama-esque approving mouth motion) when I ordered a Mezcal Negroni. Oh, the drinks are fire too. read more

Alright, let me give you the lowdown on Contramar. I'm not going to lie, I walked into this place with some high expectations, and it exceeded every single one. The restaurant itself is a testament to its popularity--it was absolutely packed. We didn't have a reservation, so we went with the savvy move of sitting at the bar. It was a perfect decision: no wait, immediate service, and a front-row seat to all the action. The seafood here feels like it was literally just pulled from the ocean. We started with the shrimp and tuna tostadas, and I have to say, the shrimp tostadas were on another level. The tuna sashimi was so fresh, and the texture was incredible. For our main course, we went with their signature A la talla whole grilled fish, served half with a red adobo rub and the other half with a parsley rub. The flavors were phenomenal--each side offered a distinct taste, and the fish itself was cooked perfectly, flaky and moist. As a man who appreciates a good dessert, I didn't think anything could top the savory dishes. I was wrong. The apple tart with vanilla ice cream was a legitimate revelation. That tart was one of the best I've ever had, with a perfect crust and warm, flavorful apples, and the ice cream was the ideal creamy counterpart. Contramar is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. The atmosphere is vibrant, the food is top-tier, and the service is on point. If you find yourself in CDMX, don't even think twice--just go. You'll thank me later. read more
If I could give Contramar more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. First things first, make a reservation! This place gets packed, especially during lunch (which is when I went), and now I completely understand why. From the moment we sat down, the staff set the tone so warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They took their time explaining every sauce and dish, checking in just enough to make sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling overbearing. That level of care really elevated the entire experience. Now let's get into the FOOD: The tuna tostada? My absolute favorite. Fresh, perfectly balanced, and honestly something I'm still thinking about. The ceviche was just as delicious bright, refreshing, and full of flavor. The empanada I could've done without, but everything else more than made up for it. The whole fish? Incredible. Super fresh, perfectly cooked, and easily one of the standout dishes of the night. Drinks were just as good, had a Hugo spritz, gin cocktail and sauv blanc that was light and refreshing, followed by an espresso martini and an iced latte to close things out (yes, I did the most, no regrets). And the banana cream pie? The perfect sweet ending. Casual dining atmosphere, but the quality of food and service is top tier. Everything felt intentional, flavorful, and memorable. Between the food, drinks, and top-tier service, this is 1000% a must-visit when in CDMX. I will definitely be back. read more
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Contramar restaurant in Mexico City, and I must say, it was a fantastic experience. As a fan of Gabriela Cámara's Masterclass, I was excited to try out many of the techniques and recipes that I had recently learned from watching her online. Despite being quite busy, we were able to walk in and get a table for three without a reservation. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and they made sure that we had everything we needed throughout our meal. One of the highlights of our meal was the Mezcalitas, which was the drink of the day with tamarind. It was a perfect balance of sweet and sour, with just the right amount of kick from the Mezcal. It was the perfect way to start our meal. As for the food, everything we tried was simply amazing. The fish was cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior and moist and tender flesh. The sauces were bold and flavorful, and the presentation was beautiful. We were able to try many of the techniques and recipes that we learned from Gabriela's Masterclass, and they did not disappoint. Overall, my experience at Contramar was fantastic. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience in Mexico City. read more

This was my third time dining at Contramar, and somehow it gets better every single visit. The consistency in quality, service, and hospitality is truly unmatched. Every meal here has been memorable, but this latest trip was especially special because I celebrated my 29th birthday here. I want to give a heartfelt thank you to the incredible staff for always being so kind, welcoming, and attentive. Although I can't remember the name of the wonderful server who helped us during our first visit two years ago, the level of care has remained the same every time we return. This trip, we came back two days in a row because we loved it that much. A very special thank you to Javier, Jesus, Edgar, and Paulina for making me feel so celebrated and genuinely cared for. You all made me feel like family, and that kind of warmth is rare to find. The food, atmosphere, and service are all exceptional, but it's the people who truly make Contramar unforgettable. Can't wait to come back again. read more
Excellent food -- read the reviews for the highlights, which are the tuna tostadas + red-and-green sauce filet. The tuna tostadas are as delicious as ppl are raving them to be. I almost asked for a second round (4 per order), but then the fish arrived. Incredible. Comes with handmade tortillas and some amazing green puréed veggies on the side. If you're doubtful on whether to get the filet or the whole fish -- the filet is more than enough for 2 ppl if you're getting some additional dishes. We also got the aguachile, which was excellent. Leave room for dessert: we got the Nutella flan and the fig tart, both of which were yummy (albeit subtle) dishes. (We asked for ice cream on the side of the Nutella flan -- definitely recommend doing the same.). This place was packed on a Saturday night with an upscale crowd, but we had made reservations easily enough online a couple weeks ago. read more
This afternoon my wife and I went out for lunch at Contramar. We'd heard great things about this place for some time now, but just never got around to trying it. As it turned out, our food was quite tasty. I had the tuna tostadas that a number of other people have posted about. I really like tostadas, and these were some of the best that I've had. My wife really liked her seafood soup as well. However, I found the atmosphere to be a little pretentious. Most of the patrons were acting high and mighty, and the staff were acting subservient. Also, while the food was good, it wasn't particularly original, and as a result it was overpriced. Anyway, enjoy! read more

Wow. Contramar lived up to every recommendation. Wednesday lunch was packed, lively, that perfect CDMX energy. Tostadas de atún are a must. Tostadas de callo too. The pescado a la talla Contramar (half red adobo, half green) is the move. Green sauce edged out the red for us but both were beautifully seasoned. Our server plated the whole fish tableside and was a total pro. Loved the Mezcalita de tamarindo. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Pricey but worth it. Will be back. read more
