I was roaming around Florence, when I saw this salon. I popped in and requested a cut. After waiting about 45 minutes, I was off to be shampooed. Prior to shampooing, they do a scalp massage with essential oils. I selected the lavender, which was lovely. The massage was icing on the cake for me! From there, I was escorted over to a lovely curly red head, who worked her magic! She did an amazing job and was really honest about what would work for my curly hair. I left feeling amazing and ready to go to the opera! If I'm back in Florence, I would come by here again. If you're in Florence, I highly recommend this place. Came here to get a Brazilian before heading to the beach. I read the reviews and knew it wasn't going to be the best experience, but I was desperate. It was by far the most painful wax experience I have ever had. The woman went way to fast and didn't even get everything. They only use soft wax which is so much more painful than hard wax when used down there. One of the very very many (FEW) important things I google-ed when I came to live in Italy was "AVEDA + FLORENCE + ITALY". This was because my color conserve shampoo and conditioner were becoming .. well.. scarce (couldn't water it down anymore, would just be ... water) You know what I found?? Not one, not two, but THREE different AVEDA locations in Florence. WOW. I came to find that these AVEDA salons were all owned by the same person, but each had it's own unique salon space and well equipped AVEDA products store. The Salon(s) Contrasto all have the same typical AVEDA features as I have found in the States, such as.. rich earthy tones and fixtures, distinctive AVEDA smell and unique groovy looking stylists. It's almost like your getting highlights and your upper lip waxed in a temperate rainforest by little forest nymphs.... this feeling only lasts a couple seconds until your friseur accidently yanks the brush a little too hard through your knotty thin hair and/or the extremely loud high pitched voice of the woman next to you is recapitulating the incompetence of her boyfriend / coworker / mecchanic / milkman / librarian etc. This place is busy so it is not likely you will find yourself the only client at any of these locations. Walk-ins are welcome at the Via de'Neri branches, but the Via della Mosca Salon is appointments only. If your looking for an English speaking stylist I recommend Livio or Antonio. I enjoy Serena, who does nice highlights. Waxing is available and done decently for a reasonable price €5 ( I haven't had it done for awhile so the price may have changed). The only thing that made me a little sad is that the AVEDA products for sale are more expensive then you would find in the States. They are already a bit pricey, so the extra €€ ' s per product made me shed a tear when I bought my color conserve shampoo. ( I now stock up on products when I go home) HOWEVER there is an amazing discount for students - 20% off hair services (something I have NEVER found in any AVEDA store back home) I have been pretty satisfied with the products and services I have received over the years from AVEDA salons. Salon Contrasto isn't any different. AVEDA prices are on the high side. I would expect to pay anywhere from €50 -€100 or much more depending on what you have done. Like many salons they charge for washing and drying your hair, which is around € 17 and sometimes they will try to slip in a nice deep conditioning rinse or something of that sort , which YES you have to pay for b/c it is EXTRA. That is why it is SUPER important to stay informed on what IS and IS NOT included in the cut or color service. Never be afraid to ask or say "oh yes that deep conditioning treatment sounds delightful... how much is that?" If your just going in for a hair cut and don't want to spend €17 for someone to wash and blow dry your hair - TELL THEM that you don't want it washed, I don't think it is really necessary for a cut BUT isn't it sooo nice to have someone wash your hair for 5 minutes, massaging your scalp and LADIES... it has been said that getting your hair massaged increases your oxytocin levels, now isn't that a way better way to splurge than a 200 calorie gelato ?? I paid 95 euro for this service, which is about 20 percent more than I would pay at home but I don't live in a large city. I went today for an eyebrow wax. I was so excited when they told me they could take me without an appointment. The process itself was painless and only 8 euro. However, my eyebrows are gone..... they're uneven, disproportionally apart and the left one is crooked. She didn't show me a mirror afterward and I didn't think much of it, but when I got home I was mortified. They had grown in full and I thought she was going to "clean up" like she said, not change the shape (unevenly) and take them away although the workers were very nice, I now need to learn how to draw on eyebrows. read more

I personally have been going to this salon since I studied here in 2005. There are a few different locations in close radius to one another but the one I prefer is adjacent to via dei neri and located on the street "via della mosca" (I had a friend who had a bad experience at the one on via dei neri). They are a bit on the pricey side, think of 35-40 for a cut and 80-100 for color & cut but they do give you a 20% student discount. I also agree with the previous poster about washing and drying your hair. I always made the mistake of not asking or saying anything and they don't really tell you if you are getting a deep conditioner treatment but just go ahead and do it and charge you later. Just make sure and ask, especially if your on a budget. You don't have to get your hair washed and dried if you don't want to. I will say that their shampoo is amazing, and they give you a very nice scalp massage which means whenever I go I end up getting it. They also have free books to read while waiting and hot tea. Came here for a Brazilian and underarm wax. The place was very clean and they saw me right on time! The esthetician was very professional and she moved quickly. The entire process only took about 20 minutes! I was in and out very quickly! Overall it was a nice experience and the wax was I expensive. I paid 10 for the underarms and 30 for the Brazilian. I came to Salon Contrasto on the recommendation of my host in Florence. I've been traveling Europe for 3 months with a really adventurous purple and blonde look which was cool but not really great for backpacking. So my hair was turning into a huge mess. Tangled, dry, with very severe roots. It was bad. I came in and told the staff what I wanted and they were so accommodating. Double checking with English speakers to make sure everything was explained properly before going forward. Tania had to do color correction, addition of color, and then my hair was cut and styled by another worker. It took over 4 hours, but it was nothing short of a miracle what I walked out with. I couldn't believe it. The best color work I've ever seen. I feel much happier and confident with a better color and style. I'm so grateful. Thank you to Tania, Noh, and everyone else. Came here twice while in Florence as a bridesmaid for my friend's wedding. The first visit was for gel nails and the second was with the bridal party for hair and makeup. The hair was simple and done well (nothing special really to say), but the makeup and nails were spot on! I had Barbara for both, and she was wonderful! :) My makeup was definitely among the better, and she really listened to what we asked for. As for the nails, mine normally don't stay more than a few days (even with gel), but these lasted the rest of our trip and then some (over 2 weeks) and still looked great! Was excited to try this place but was very disappointed... Got a shallac manicure and they charged me €15 for the manicure part where all she did was file my nails and then another €25 for just the shallac Polish.... Total BS, not very happy about it. I've never paid more than $25 for both a full manicure and shallac Polish so this just doesn't seem right to me. Also the polish selection is very limited so I had to settle on a dull color. I'm a study abroad student who is staying in Florence for 3 months. Normally I get waxed by European waxing center in the states or do my own waxing at home. I waited as long as I could to get a Brazilian while abroad and read so many reviews to see which was the best option. I chose this place because it's a beautiful and clean salon. The woman who greeted me when I entered was super nice and hospitable. She offered me tea and water while I waited for my appointment. The wax wasn't the best I've ever gotten but it certainly wasn't bad. They use soft wax for the entirely of the Brazilian which I've never had, which I heard is more painful but I don't think it's any more painful than a hard wax. The girl who did my wax was very sweet and tried her best to communicate in English with me about pain. She had be hold my skin taut in some areas however I wish she had told me to do it for the entire wax to avoid bruising. There were two areas where she went over a bone/ curvature which caused minimal bruising, but still bruising. Luckily it didn't hurt but did leave a mark. The negatives where that there were a few stray hairs that she must have not seen, some strips left minimal bruising (I also bruise like a peach so I don't blame her completely)and the wax left me really sticky. The positives was it was super clean and professional in the salon, the staff were super nice and welcoming, and the wax was done in 15-20 minutes. And best part is was SUPER cheap compared to America where you can easily pay $50+, it was only 30€!!!! I'll be going again despite the negatives so I have it 4 stars. read more

I'm a Canadian student studying in Florence and have been here for over 6 months when I couldn't go any longer without a cut. I was incredibly nervous, even though several people assured me that Italians are the best hair dressers. After seeking out the location on Via della Mosca that everyone says takes appointments, I walked in and they told me they are "walk-in only". The larger location, about 20 meters down the street on Via dei Neri, booked my appointment for me and provided me with little information as to who would be doing my hair and how much it would cost. They did reassure me that they would put me with an english-speaking stylist. It runs exactly like any other Aveda salon I've been to. You sit & wait as they offer you tea or water while you read magazines. Such a nice atmosphere. I had Rebecca, or "Becky" (as she referred to herself), as a colourist and Lucca as a stylist. I was incredibly nervous because I was cutting over 4 inches off and getting highlights for the first time in years. I highly recommend them both! Becky did the best colouring I've ever seen and even directed me to deviate from what I "thought" I wanted by recommending I stay closer to my natural colour. Thank goodness. My highlights are so subtle that they look incredibly natural but add so much dimension to my hair. Lucca took the reigns and gave me exactly what I was looking for- I was able to hold on to my length while revamping my ends and body/volume. He did wash my hair with a deep-conditioner (I know I was supposed to say no but I was treating myself) and blow dried it. The total came to 130 euros after 3 hours, multiple highlights, a head massage, deep conditioning & shampooing, several teas & a blow out. I'd say it was well worth it just for the feeling of being "home" for a day. Hope you have as good of an experience as I did. read more

So, I walked in with a handwritten-google-translated page about what I wanted (lol), and being that it was a new place and that I barely spoke the language I really did not know what I would end up with, but! I seriously had THE best haircut I ever remember getting!! Eva was my stylist and she was adorable, sweet, patient and very good with the scissors. She did exactly what I asked for! :) ... There was another young man there who greeted me and who was sort of overseeing my whole experience that was also sweet but I don't remember his name :( Price: I had already washed my hair that morning so I did not get a shampoo, so the cut only was either 40 or 45 euro. Went in earlier today as a walk in for a haircut and was almost immediately taken to a chair (I only sat down to wait for a couple minutes). Then Stephanie my stylist asked me questions about exactly what I wanted. She spoke English well and did an incredibly good job!. My hair is blonde, but thick and it was looking very boring.
