Kelia was the most amazing trainer for me and my dog. He was an anxious, dog reactive guy, and it affected every part of how and when we interacted with the world. Since he's worked with her over the five-week training period, he's made a complete 180. Now we're able to walk around the city and not have him bark at every dog we see on the street. I want to point out that because my dog is innately anxious, it affects his physical state too with eating and other issues. Kelia shared that she used to be a vet tech and made me feel the most comfortable and confident with helping me set up a plan for when he might have an episode due to the transition and what all would take place to ensure he would be okay, loved, and healthy. Our family highly recommends Controlled K9! We adopted our boy Mortimer last year after he had been living as a stray, and we were really struggling when he came home with basic manners, reactivity, and having him settle in with our other dog. We were looking for a reputable trainer to give our 8 month old pups a good obedience foundation and to solve a severe fight or flight reaction our female Sheltie was having toward moving cars, strange people and strange dogs. After doing quite a bit of research we decided to go with Controlled K9, although I must admit I was skeptical at first, because all of their online reviews were 5 stars, and I thought that no trainer could be that good. However, after talking to James at length I felt comfortable with proceeding with them. James hooked us up with Kelly, one of their trainers and told me "you'll really like her". That turned out to be an understatement. Before we signed a contract Kelly came to our house with one her dogs and spent a couple of hours with us assessing our pups and explaining in more detail their training approach. She also took a walk with us so that she could see their walking habits and our Sheltie's reaction to cars. That session sealed the deal, and we made the final decision to go with them, then and there, for a four week board and train program for both our pups. At this point, I should mention that they do not kennel the dogs in some facility where they are left overnight. They bring the dogs into the trainer's home so that the experience is similar what the dogs will experience after training. In our case, Kelly also surrounded our dogs with her own pups that she had trained as well as two service dogs she had trained. It was a great environment for our pups to be in while being trained. Needless to say, we are ecstatic with the results. Kelly picked up our pups on November 11th to begin their training experience. She spent the first 7 to 10 days giving them a good foundation of basic behavioral skills and teaching them good walking and indoor manners. The next part of the training focused on the specific problems we asked her to address. During the entire training program Kelly was in contact with us almost every day and sent lots of pictures and videos. On several occasions she sent us more lengthy texts in response to questions we had about their progress.Finally, she brought our pups home on December 9th and spent 3 to 4 hours turning them back over to us and training us on the essentials of continuing the progress they had made. I have already sent her two texts asking her questions that have come up since she brought them back home, and she has answered quickly. Controlled K9 changed our dog and family for the better! We love our rescue lab with all our hearts, but six months into having her we realized we needed professional help. We could no longer have friends and family over due to her poor manners and insanely high energy level, despite seemingly endless walks and jogs. We had a great experience with Controlled K9! James walked us through what to expect and met our 10 month old shih tzu, Waffles, to determine what an appropriate training program would look like. Waffles needed to learn manners and we needed to get his reactivity under control as well as curb some bad behaviors he had developed (chewing on furniture, countersurfing, eating everything in sight). Kelly took Waffles for 4 weeks and she was amazing! Kelly worked with Waffles to improve manners and focus. Waffles' behavior is so much better- he listens to commands and can be corrected. We loved the daily pictures and videos of Waffles out with "the pack" and on trips to the store and the farmer's market. TLDR: Don't let the youthful looks and relaxed demeanor fool you. Controlled K9 are serious dog training professionals! If you want results, call them! Samson is our 11month, working line GSD. Bonding, socializing and training were going well. Around 6 months he started showing signs of reactivity and fear. We've had GSDs and Dobermans before and never had any issues, so this was certainly new to us. Wanting to get ahead of this before it became an issue we researched; we spoke to other GSD owners, spoke with his breeder and littermates owners; we consulted our vet as well as some dog training "professionals". Yet, nothing seemed to help. His issues were exacerbated when the neighbor's dog broke through our fence and attacked him. From there it went from bad to worse, to the point where we could no longer go outside and freely engage in the activities Samson and our family loved. Walks had to be strategically timed to avoid high traffic hours; wide berth given when passing people or other dogs; 5 miles drives to an open field for off-leash training and exercise; walks around town, and outings to the daughter's soccer...forget it; friends and family wouldn't come over unless he was in the kennel; my mother in-law did not want us visiting if we had Samson with us. It was at this point we knew we needed a professional. Seemed simple, but this proved to be challenging and frustrating. My wife and I spent many hours looking for trainers. From the big online "off leash" trainers to the ones boasting reactivity/aggression fixes, to the advertised training offered at the large pet stores and behavioral rehab with niche local trainers...after multitudes of phone calls and emails we either never heard back or when we did, they did not want to work with our dog. During the home visit he evaluated Samson, we talked about goals and discussed reasonable expectations, boiling it down to the goal of having Samson be neutral in his environment, with the expectation that Controlled K9 will build a foundation of expected behavior, while providing me the tools and support to continue working with Samson after their training is done. We scheduled a 4wk board and train and have had Samson back for a week. It is one thing to see his progress through the messages, pictures and videos the trainers consistently provided, but having him home, his transformation is remarkable. He's obedient, focused, and engaged on walks, yet still his fun loving, goofy self. In the week we've had him back, I've walked him several times through the strip mall, walks at all hours in the neighborhood, off leash play at the basketball courts and trails, and have had friends come over to practice door and house manners with great success. I believe there were two minor incidents the first two days he was back. I was able to use the tools and training Controlled K9 gave me to correct that behavior and talk to the owner. He got back to me very fast and assured me it's normal for a dog to want to revert to bad habits when they get home. One of the things I like best about Controlled K9 is that they are not a "one size fits all, cookie cutter" dog training service. At drop-off they spent time explaining Samson's training, provided me tools on how I can continue his success as well as mentioning nuances about Samson. Their communication is outstanding. Kenzie and James did a great job with my dog. My husky had some aggression towards people and like all huskies, is independent minded. After attempting to work on the issue myself and with some in home trainers, and failing, I turned to the pros at Controlled K9. My dog did a board and train with Kenzie for a month and came back much improved. Kenzie did a great job of explaining what she had done with him and how I could continue to work with him at home.
