Used to be a nightly student haunt. Now it has new managers who hawk halal food, Juul smokes and water-coffee. When I walked into this place recently, thinking I'd buy a fat tasty Italian sand-wich like back in the day, and all I saw was rice and falafel, all I bought is $1 chips. New owners again. This time, this place gets it right. In the past, I had issues where I would order by phone and they wouldn't even start prepping until I got there, meaning that 15 minutes became another 15 when I got there-- every time. Under the new ownership the sandwiches are better, they have great breakfast potatoes, and their lunches are great too. I really enjoy the chicken & rice and the chopped cheese. Came by here to get a meal for lunch. Pretty open store and very clean and organized, appreciate food Marts that easy to look around for what you want easily. The menu was not really easy to find but they paper menus so checked it out and asked for Italian combo and had asked for to be without a few items, very cool they give no issues with custom order and was sure to repeat the order to make sure it was right. Also grabbed a pasta salad as well since looked good. Almost tried there tres leech cake, but price made me hard declined it. The Italian combo warp was good, fresh cut deli meats and cheese, plus love they more then just white wraps, had a wheat,spinach and tomato basil wraps, so glad I got last one. Not a huge fan of Convenient Deli. I went here last year for a lunch sandwich, chicken cutlet with mayo on a roll, they put one skinny sliver of chicken on the sandwich and basically no mayo. On New Years Day, my friends and I searched for an open deli for bagels. Convenient Deli was (conveniently) open and I decided to give it a second chance. I ordered a sesame bagel with cream cheese and I got one, but it had orange stuff on it... which I tasted and it was buffalo sauce. There is really nothing more "classic New York" than a bacon egg and cheese on a hard roll. If you're missing your commute or just want a classic BEC this is the place. Add a crispy hash brown and you're good to go. I regularly get the BEC with salt, pepper and ketchup, hungry man style which doubles the eggs and bacon. So yum! Tried to make a quick stop into Convenient Deli just before Christmas to get a dessert to bring a friend celebrating a birthday. I was immediately struck by the stark appearance of the place. Gone was the cozy feeling of a well stocked well run deli. At first I thought that they no longer sold the cakes that I used to buy with my housemate after dinning in town, then I saw the refrigeration case which was moved nearer the deli counter. At first glance it was clear that their inventory was low (making me question freshness), but more frustratingly nothing was marked with a price. Under past ownership all plastic clamshells with desserts where clearly marked with prices on the top with black marker. A worker came over and asked if I needed help so I inquired about the prices which they did not know without asking the manager. It came back to me that the cupcake which once sold for near two dollars was now close to five and the cakes which were between two dollars fifty cents and three fifty were now over six dollars for a tiny little piece. I walked out to try to get to another little store with a selection and prices more inline with what I am accustomed to as a long time New Paltz resident. As I left I remarked that their prices got REALLY high. The manager behind the counter said 'clientele and dropped off' to which I remarked that it sounds like an unfortunate, bad cycle. Once in my car I questioned how raising prices on your faithful customers helps a business and not alienate their faithful As I made my way to my car I thought how the last time I had popped in there to get a sandwich that I expected to cost between six and seven dollars I grabbed a tenner from my bag and thought I had plenty of money for both a sandwich and a tip, but when the sandwich came to ten and change (which I thankfully had in my pocket) the notion of a tip disappeared. But I digress; pardon me... New Paltz being a small community; through the grapevine I heard that the staff working that night thought me 'rude and not nice enough.' I had not gone in there expecting to have to bring balloons or for that matter any kind personal joy. I simple wanted to make a quick and efficient purchase (you know a stop of convenience; as the name implies). But I had to make another stop to get what I was looking for. In hindsight, my journey in there was a big waste of time and disappointment. Having heard the staffs review of me I feel obligated to review them in return. I fear that should I go back there and ask them to make me a sandwich it would be not only overpriced but spat in. The information that their sales are down and that foot traffic has become a trickle seems not surprising. I feel sad that the new owners ran a great place so deep into the ground. Just one too many bad experiences. Sandwiches consistently wrong, overpriced, or skimpy. Understaffed and non-existent management. One of the girls working there took thirty minutes to make two sandwiches and was serving customers who ordered their food after me before me. Sandwich was grilled yet cold. This is the queen of convenient stores in my mind. It's not flashy like a 7-11, and it doesn't have gas. It's not a hotbed for lottery addicts. It's just an unpretentious, 24-hour convenient store that also makes sandwiches and sells macaroni salads. The array of beverages is impressive. I mean, it's not like you'd want to do your grocery shopping here but you could certainly get coffee, creamer, milk and cereal for the next morning. This is the place you go when it's 2 a.m. and you desperately need some ice cream, beer, a pair of shoelaces and several varieties of gummy candy. You won't get a slush puppy, but you might end up with a banana or a tossed salad or a bran muffin. The service is your typical blend of college students, college dropouts and townies, who will sell you a sandwich and some smokes with just the amount of sarcasm and disdain you'd expect from any self-respecting convenient store. A couple of years ago they renovated so there's now a little "cafe'/dining area in the back too, if you like that sort of thing. They also deliver, sometimes. And every so often you might see the son from "Orange County Choppers" in here to stock up on a few goods. read more

They're finally under new ownership!!!! The place looks so clean, the staff doesn't look miserable anymore, everyone is so friendly, and the sandwich quality has definitely improved. I stopped in about a year ago while under the previous owner and there were flies in their bread basket and they weren't concerned at all. Not a bad little deli - it's fast, the quality of the food is consistent (if average), and most of the food items on the shelves stay stocked. Perfect for a quick bite to eat at a fair price. Customer service is a problem, though. The workers seem like they don't want to be there, and after watching the owner yell at and demean them in front of customers, I understand. Employees are bound to make the occasional mistake, especially younger college-age students, but no one deserves to be chastised like that in front of customers. She runs the business well, but the employee turnover is tremendous - I rarely see the same people working there from month to month. Bottom line: this isn't a bad deli. Have you ever tried to order food from someone who isn't willing to say a single word to you? It's weird--it feels like you're talking to a statue! I can now say my life is a little more complete, having had that experience today at Convenient Deli. I want to like this place so badly--in many ways it's perfect: an unpretentious deli with generally good food. And it's a little down the road from the crowded part of Main Street, so you can run in for a pretty quick lunch. But each time I've gone at least one staff member has been rude or mean. I'm tired of walking in there to spend money and leaving feeling badly. Also, the salad bar could use a little work: there was a bottle of dressing sitting under the "made fresh daily" sign that had been around so long it was congealed into a solid and couldn't be poured out. read more

The prices are okay. Can't say much about the sandwiches. However, I worked there for a little bit a little while ago, and I can tell you from personal experience that the owner/boss of the place is one of the most impatient meanest persons I have ever come across. She has absolutely no interest in training you and expects you to get everything down right away. And if you ask her a question about something, she's usually pissed that she has to explain it to you. She also has no problem demeaning her employees in front of customers if they make a mistake. The sandwiches are okay, but they seem to run out of rolls and bread quite frequently. They also tend to only have white bread options. The quality of the sandwich varies widely depending on the person. The seating area in the back is always pretty messy. Also, the other stuff they sell there always seems to be sitting there for a while, so I'd caution against buying anything except for deli products and drinks. In my experience, most of the employees are unfriendly, even rude. The late-night ones are usually pretty nice though. They put "We Deliver!" on brochures and everything, but I've called many times and have only gotten it delivered twice. I guess it depends on if anyone who is working has a car, but you might as well not advertise delivery if it's that highly hit or miss (and mostly miss). I see a lot of these reviews are about the unfriendliness of Convenient's employees so I think it's worth it to share this long-winded story. For those who aren't interested in reading it, I'll leave the summary here: miserable, unfriendly employees can sometimes be indicative of bad management, and I think that's the case with Convenient. I worked at Convenient some time ago. All of my coworkers were very welcoming and friendly (I don't think any of them are still there) but there was this weird element when it came to talking about the owner. I can't really explain it, but there was a mix of dislike and fear whenever she came up in conversation, although no one was ever very explicit about it. She hired me and then immediately went on vacation so I hadn't gotten to know her too well in the whopping two weeks I worked there. Mind you, I was hired without experience, and she knew this (her exact words were "It's not very hard to make a sandwich"). As it turns out, and I'm embarrassed to admit this, it's very hard for ME to make a sandwich. I legit feel bad for anyone who had to eat anything I made for them, because I took forever and no matter how hard I tried, it looked like a mess. After about a week I was starting to get a little better, and I was very comfortable on register. But I was still struggling pretty badly when working the grill, which turned out to be my downfall during the first shift I worked where the owner was actually present. So I'm in the process of wrestling with eggs and yes, I was taking a long time, and the fact that I was taking a long time was giving me anxiety, which was making me take even longer, and on top of that I knew the owner knew I was taking a long time, so basically it was a recipe for disaster. She had come over to me once or twice already to say something, and on more than one occasion had roughly grabbed the spatula out of my hand. Cue more anxiety. Finally, after yet another spatula-grabbing scenario, I turned to her and said "Do you not want me to do this?" If there was ever a moment in my life where I very consciously wished I could hit the rewind button, it was that one. The look she gave me made me want to press my face against the grill just so I could have an excuse to leave. She angrily told me she wanted me to do my job (totally valid! I also wanted to do my job! The trouble was, I was terrible at this job and not getting better at the rate she wanted me to) and that she didn't appreciate me copping an attitude with her. I tried to apologize and explain that I wasn't trying to cop an attitude (I really wasn't, at that point in my life I was very timid and the idea of copping an attitude with my boss literally horrified me), I was very seriously asking her if she wanted me to do something else because obviously I was struggling on the grill but could handle other things (I had gotten the hang of register and could even handle making regular sandwiches). She stormed off without saying much else. At that point, I knew the end had come. The only thing I could do was stand at the grill and nudge the stupid spatula against the stupid egg whites and try not to make it too obvious that I was crying. After another two minutes, she came back over, grabbed the spatula out of my hand AGAIN, and said "If you're not going to work, then you should just leave." Well, that was the end of my summer job as a deli clerk. As I started the walk of shame past all my coworkers and all the customers who just watched me get fired, she picked up the sandwich someone had made for me to have for lunch and says "Take this, I don't want it" in this completely disgusted tone, then tosses it at me. My shining moment was taking it and very obviously throwing it into the trash as I walked out. I'm not one to make excuses for myself, I'm really not. I was not cut out for that job, and I think anyone would have fired me, especially an employer who wanted a new hire to have less of a learning curve than I did. The firing was reasonable. But man, I really think she could have, and should have, handled that better. I would be willing to think that maybe this was a fluke, that she was generally a friendly and compassionate boss and I'd just pushed all the wrong buttons that day, but the fact that none of the other employees seemed crazy about her really leads me to believe that she was just a miserable person to work for if you got on her bad side, which didn't seem particularly difficult to do. To the owner, if she's reading this: this happened a few years ago and I want to give you the benefit of the doubt that you've changed your managerial tactics since then, but if you haven't, here's some pointers. Check your attitude before demanding that someone else check theirs, don't grab spatulas out of other people's hands, and for God's sake, it's a deli, not a hospital. No one's going to die if you step away for thirty seconds to privately tell an employee that it isn't working out. read more

This might be the worst place I've ever gotten a sandwich from. The staff is a collection of miserable human beings who make it seem like they are being forced to work there against their will. Not a single have a good day or any type of common communication that most humans have with one another. You could probably get more emotion out of a brick wall. On top of that there prices are actually outrageous, I got some cheese added to a grilled chicken wrap and there was an extra $0.80 charge, for one slice of cheese. The wrap had two small pieces of chicken that it seems like they used two chicken nuggets from McDonalds (probably would've been better if they did) and then topped with what seemed like a entire head of lettuce. Which made me question whether or not I ordered a veggie wrap. So save yourself the time and do not buy anything from here, you would get more out of your lunch if you gnaw on some bark. read more

Convenient seemed like a nice place to stop by a get food a couple times on my way through town, but I was sorely mistaken. The workers look as though they are forced to be there (paid off books maybe? *IRS take note). I'm also fairly certain that they sell alcohol to people who are underage, which is unsightly to see. At first the owner was a sweetheart, but this impression was quickly done in her bad snappy attitude.
