We cannot speak highly enough of Convoy Piano. After first reaching out, we were connected with Wayne who scheduled our appointment. During our first visit at the shop, he walked us through the store and let us spend time playing each piano we were interested in. Wayne is incredibly friendly and easy to talk to. As a pianist himself, he was able to demo the pianos, making it easy for us to determine which we liked the sound of. We spent time chatting and walking through the store playing and listening to pianos for about 45 minutes. One piano in particular caught our eye - a 1980 Yamaha U1 W104 in polished walnut, which was the only one of its kind they carried. We weren't planning on buying a piano that day so we said we would think about it. However, about 30 minutes after leaving we called Wayne and said we would like to move forward with the purchase. We then scheduled a meeting with Mihee to drop off payment. Mihee is the owner of the shop, as well as the piano technician. During our visit with her, she was very kind and courteous. And knowledgeable. She spent time discussing the history of the piano with us. We learned that she personally hand selects each of her pianos in Japan, and brings back only the ones that are in great condition and have been expertly restored. Once the pianos arrive in her shop, she tunes and preps them to ensure they are in excellent playable condition, which we can attest to. The piano we purchased is over 40 years old and looks and sounds flawless. After purchasing, delivery was scheduled. The moving company that was used was West Coast Piano Movers. We have two flights of stairs in our home, and they were able to deliver the 500lb piano without issue. We have been playing the piano for about a month now and we are in love with it. Purchased a Kawai grand piano from Mihee (and her husband) after SEVERAL absolutely no-pressure visits over the course of a couple of months. I spent up to an hour each visit, playing many of the grands at first, and then gradually narrowing down the choices with the rest of the family (yep - even my wife's voice of finish was weighed in the ultimate decision). I have been playing since childhood and have always desired a grand, not only for the acoustics, but the touch. Couple that with a duo of kids taking well to their piano lessons, and the hunt was on. Mihee will greet you and allow you free rein in the store - never pushing you with information, but quickly answering any question you may have. They are now in a larger location, with a smaller section that the doors can be closed - so auditioning pianos can be done without too much "acoustic" distraction from other customers (unless they happen to be in the same section as you). Their selection isn't as vast as competitors, but there is a nice mix of Japanese- and Chinese-built grand pianos - what the family eventually zeroed in on towards the end. The competition was fierce; I was really enjoying Mihee's display Hailun HG178 and (drool) the Steinway (Model O), but that's where the "décor" part of the equation (not to mention the financial) came in. Free delivery - and Mihee used Tilton's Almighty Piano Moving and Storage (shout out to David Tilton and his crew - AWESOME! They even carried off our older upright from the SECOND floor for a very reasonable fee. In addition, David and his crew were EXTREMELY careful, not only with the piano, but with the areas of the house they were traversing. I'm writing this here, as I don't see David on Yelp!), and delivered the piano within a few days. The piano plays and sounds GREAT! Mihee will be coming here in the next few months to tune; plus a warranty - rest assured she will stand by her sale and ensure you are satisfied. When the time comes to upgrade (a Steinway's touch and sound has been my ultimate piano dream), I will be beating a path to Mihee's door! read more

Convoy Piano did not complete jobs that we hired them to do. Not satisfied poor customer service.

I tried to contract this company to tune a piano at our home. It took several emails back and forth to finalize a time which wasn't ideal for me, but I was so excited to have this done that I wanted to make anything work. (we are on a budget and got this piano for free so our daughter can learn how to play music) I was here on time, and had tightly scheduled my day to make this appointment with other commitments I had. I have to admit, the email said "around 4pm" but she showed up at 5pm without any type of contact to let me know she was still coming. She came into our house, opened our piano and deemed it untunable. And immediately launched into the options I have to rent a piano through her shop. Then proceeded to charge me $50 for the house visit! What? (there was/is no mention of any type of charge for a 5 minute talk) I only had 20s because I was planning on paying for the tuning, so I asked if she had change. She pulled out a wad of $100s and some singles. So instead of taking into account that she was SO late and wasn't able to do anything and just taking $40, she ended up charging me $53 for this "service". Okay, I understand, maybe I didn't do my due diligence to have the piano inspected prior to picking it up. However, the manner in which this was handled made me feel strongly that I need to let people know. read more

She has the RPT (registered piano technician) credential and this is difficult to obtain. As I've mentioned on my first review, I have asked Mihee (Convoy Piano) to work on my Yamaha C2. I'm not a professional but I can say I play decently enough to enjoy a nice instrument, well regulated and tuned. Mihee worked 2 times on my piano already and it's much better now. With her work I could practice for San Diego Amateur Outstanding Pianists competition and San Diego University Summer Festival. Again, aside of her great technical skills I also liked the way she approaches the work : no pushing or unnecessary work done. In late January this year, we purchased yamaha upright for our daughter. Her music teacher visited the showroom and selected the piece for us. She was impressed with the collection and the workmanship. Ms. Mihee, the store owner was very helpful, cordial, answered all our questions, and knowledgeable. She did not try to sell the piano too aggressively. On the last point, we felt more comfortable in her store vs. other San Diego showrooms that sell yamahas. The fact that she is a technician, we expect to have the machine tuned regularly by her. Since she refurbished the piano herself, she is the most suitable person to continue to handle the tuning as well.
