Continuing with my alphabet series, O was a bit tricky, since I already did Olive on Main, so O is for Out, as in Cook Out. My girlfriend highly recommended Cook Out, which I never had before as we don't have them in the area I live in MD or even in northern VA as far as I know. Her parents have a home by Smith Mountain Lake. We were down there the week of 4th of July 2024. On the last day, we drove to the Cook Out for lunch so that I could try it. Wow, I was impressed with both the inexpensive prices & good quality burger! This was almost on par with In & Out Burger in terms of the taste, another burger place we sadly DON'T have in my home state, Maryland. The menu is a la carte even to the ingredients on the burger, like lettuce was extra. It took some getting used to, but I kind of liked in that I wasn't paying for stuff I might not have cared for much. Staff was cordial and helpful with my couple of questions. My g/f & I split the 12-piece hash puppies and sweet tea. Hush puppies were delicious and not a normal thing I get in MD due to not many places having it. At fast food burgers I've had in MD, typically fries are the standard side item; so I liked having the hush puppies option. Overall, my experience was excellent with the Rocky Mount Cook Out. Unfortunately, the 3 other locations I went to after (one of which I didn't eat at because they didn't have an open dining room, was pouring rain outside, and didn't want to eat in the car like animals) weren't as good, but I'd definitely try to return to the Rocky Mount, VA location. read more

I would leave a zero rating, but not allowed. I was in the store today and witnessed what appeared to be the manager dressing down one of the staff. It was so bad it captured the attention of other employees in the store at the time. I was always taught to praise in public and criticize in private. Morale in the store is surely to take a hit when even the general public is party to discipline issues within the ranks. read more

Ordered a banana/peanut butter shake for my daughter who had 4 wisdom teeth pulled and she wanted something cold. We got home and it had a half of banana and a hunk of peanut butter laying on top of the shake. Last time I checked you're supposed to blend it. I mean is that not what a shake is? SMDH!!! Wow, where to start? I ordered a double burger with Cajun fries and chicken tenders. My overdone burgers looked like blowout patches and were about the same size. I asked for cheese, lettuce and mayo. Got the cheese, approximately 1/2 jar of mayo, and a piece of lettuce the size of a penny. The chicken tenders were tasteless pieces of cardboard. The Cajun fries were actually chili cheese fries that were passable. Now for the fun part - my husband got the BBQ platter with fries and Cole slaw and hush puppies. It's really hard to fail on fries, so those too were passable. Hush puppies were passable as well. The Cole slaw was hilarious - nothing but shredded cabbage in a cup...no dressing no nothing, just cabbage. But the funniest part was his BBQ; I have thrown out canned cat food that looked better than the scoop of unidentifiable glop in my husbands dish. It had a tiny drizzle of red stuff over top which could have been BBQ sauce, but looked like plasma instead. Only if you are on a deserted island and cannibalism is your only other option, I would strongly suggest eating elsewhere. If possible, I would give this place a -57 stars, but Yelp reviews don't allow anything less than one star. read more

Either you get here on a good day or get here on a bad day. I have been here times when I have loved the food, shakes, and employees. Then have been here on days when I would never even went to come near this place. Only complaints I have on a daily though is that the milkshakes are way too thick and if I ever do have to call in about a complaint, there number is no where to be found directly to the store. read more

I really like this place. The food taste is excellent, the prices are cheap, and the workers are friendly and seem to really care about providing great service. For me, this is way better than other fast food options in the area. Plus there is a good variety of fast food options. I would also say this particular locations is one of the better Cook Outs I've been to. Clean, zippy service, and great food. read more

Teenage kids (more than 6) hanging out in the parking lot with NO masks on and definitely not social distancing themselves in which was not addressed by manager!!!! Service in drive thru was horrible, had NO condiments that we requested, hush puppies were put/tossed in the bag upside down and we we were missing 2 items from order and we only ordered 6 items! Spoke with management and he was extremely rude about the situation. Needless to say we will NOT be going back there or any other cookout facility. I come from an area with a bit more diversity in its selection of American-style eateries, so moving to Rocky Mount had me less than excited with its garden variety chains and sparse family restaurants. Then I was taken to Cookout, and my life was forever changed. To be totally transparent, I haven't sampled every offering on their generous menu, but I have yet to receive a burger or chicken dish that isn't the best I've ever had for the price. I'm a creature of habit, though, and I can't stop by without getting my usual double cheeseburger with pickles. And if you're like me and have an aneurysm when your burger order is messed up, NEVER FEAR. The super-friendly person taking your order will read it back to you, and I haven't had any issues yet. Though its staff is friendly and hardworking, its service system is efficient, and its food is fresh and not frozen, the most obvious point in favor of Cookout is the flavor each burger is just exploding with. FLAVOR EXPLOSION, I KID YOU NOT. Not pumped full of flavor-enhancing chemicals, just fresh beef cooked on a grill (or I'm assuming that's what they mean by "outdoors style") the way God intended cheeseburgers to be made. I will never understand why The Burger-Chain-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named always has lines of cars looped around the building with its drivers huffing exhaust before they dine on fake food when Cookout is right down the street with two lines for fast service and FRESH food. Come on, people. Thankfully, because of the high quality of food for the more than reasonable price and the consistently enjoyable atmosphere, Cookout has become the regular go-to treat for my family and they will receive our business for many too-hot-to-cook weekends to come. read more

Biggest, cheapest, tastiest, greasy burger...EVER! And hush puppies...yes! We fed four people here for $25, and had some left. Skip the Golden Arches, the redheaded where's the beef place, flame grilled whopper joint, and eat here for an awesome not-so-run-of-the-mill burger. read more

I could make a better burger on a George Foreman. Other than the burgers being beef....the food is very low quality. Food is even poorly wrapped so it is soggy and greasy. Cookout is only good at 2am bc there is nothing else open. If you care about food quality, taste, or your health...id skip it. read more
