The best BBQ in the area! One walks into this restaurant with a "Where have you been all my life?!" feeling and leave there feeling like they have experienced a phenomenon of culinary bliss! This restaurant does NOT disappoint! We really enjoyed our experience at this relaxed restaurant. Rebecca, our server, did an excellent job anticipating our needs and flawlessly ensured our order was correct. She was awesome! Food is UNBELIEVABLY EXCELLENT! The brisket and pulled pork was perfectly done! The potato salad and banana pudding were great. My son had the half-rack of ribs and the portion they brought out looked like a whole rack. We've never seen our son eat ribs so quickly - he devoured them in what was likely a record time, and if you knew this kid - he doesn't get in a hurry for anything...but had we reached over his plate we would likely be missing fingers... lol The brisket was tender, juicy, and very flavorful. My wife enjoyed the chicken and brisket. The collard greens were perfectly done. The sauces were great! Banana pudding was the best you can get aside from having homemade. We live about 40 minutes from this restaurant and in another county - but we will now be regular fixtures at this restaurant. They are definitely the G.O.A.T. in a 4 county area! Host was friendly and accommodating to our indecisiveness nature of sitting outside or inside. Our server, Colby, provided quick service and was attentive to our needs. Overall the food was pretty good. The brisket was probably my favorite. I did feel like the Mac n cheese was lacking a bit in flavor and the cornbread was a little dry. This place has decent food BUT if you're looking for a quiet dinner spot, look elsewhere. We met up with family here for dinner on one of their the karaoke nights so we were yelling at each other across a small table for 4 in order to communicate. Service was good, price was on the high side for essentially eating off disposable plates with plastic utensils. A solid 3/5 for me. read more

On a business trip and staying here in Rocky Mount. I have friends that have a place at Smith Mountain Lake. I asked them about where to eat and they said Rocky Mount Smokehouse BBQ! My coworker and I went here. Just a mile or so from the hotel. Very cool ambience, super friendly service and great menu options!! I absolutely loved the hush puppies! I was driving through the area and wanted BBQ. After browsing Yelp, stumbled upon this place. My first impression is a bit off putting (I got over it) as there's a sign telling you 4 times wait to be seated, but the other gentleman who entered at the same time and myself had no room to wait without blocking the door. The wait stand seemed pulled forward creating the congestion. After being seated, I tried to order something allowing me to sample several of the different offerings. I ordered half a rack of ribs, along with baked beans and potato salad. Before ordering, I specifically asked if they made the potato salad or if it came in a box. I was assured they made it. The ribs were incredibly tender with bones falling out. They come out unsauced so you can add whichever you'd like if you even wanted to. The baked beans are quite unique. I was immediately greeted with a flavor similar to chili, then hit with the sweetness of barbecue. They were good, and I would order them again. The potato salad had strong mustard flavor, and I probably preferred been thicker, and not as runny. I added the peach cobbler to eat before I left and the banana pudding to take home. Both were wonderful. I genuinely appreciate restaurants that make their own food and don't just heat up frozen, canned or bagged items. If you have a similar appreciation, you'll like this place. If I could change anything about this place, it would be addressing the tight waiting space as you come in, and I sure wish they had hot links or sausage of some sort (couldn't find any on the menu). Collards, I always get collards when they have them, come on a BBQ joint has to have collards, right? The collards were spot on good! The spouse, she got the tater salad. Neither had any flavor. And the vinegar NC based - there maybe wasnt even any vinegar in it, dont know what it was but not vinegar and not close to anything that should have a "nc vinegar " name on it. The pork we put half the bottle of the so called vinegar base on it. Nada. The brisket, hard and thick. No marbling. No moisture. Seriously? This wasnt smoked. This place was great! Food was really wonderful and I eat a lot of BBQ while traveling full time. The hush puppy sticks and the baked beans were my favorite thing for sure. Both were exceptional without exaggerating. The brisket was good, maybe a 7 out of 10 in my experience. The sauce was also really good. Really great place and experience. We stopped here for dinner on Friday night in the middle of a snowstorm on our way from NC to our lake place in VA. It had good reviews and the photos looked great, and I'll say overall we had an ok experience. The service was good and the sweet tea got an A+ according to my husband. Between my two sons, the husband and I we had the quarter chicken, pulled chicken, brisket and ribs. We sampled the collards, baked beans, green beans, slaw, mac & cheese and hush puppies. All of the meat was very dry, but the smoked flavor was good. We also liked the homemade sweet honey barbecue sauce, though I personally wish it had a little more spice/heat kick to it. We all doused and dipped to counteract the dryness of the various proteins. I think the sides were better than the meats, the baked bean recipe especially. And the inside atmosphere was pretty spot on for a barbecue place. The silly signage in the ladies room particularly amused me. While it suited our needs for a quick dinner in a very odd weather situation, I'm not sure we'd go back again intentionally unless it was to check on the meat situation. In the vast land of culinary locations that are fast food, this isn't bad. Had the 3 meat combo: Brisket Ribs 1/4 Chicken Chicken well smoked, but dry. The ribs were similar. The brisket was juicy but not gelatinous. The beans were awesome (multiple thumbs up). The Mac-n-cheese, cole slaw ,and fries were good. The honey BBQ sauce was pretty good. Forgot to mention that the sweet tea was good. Service was quick and the area was clean. We were by the smoker, so we know what wildlife that invites. That didn't really bother me. Very friendly staff. I had the wings as an appetizer - came out crispy, as ordered. Plenty of ranch and blue cheese accompanied them. What is it with me, bbq, and cops? This is the second time for me going to a barbecue joint, walking in, and seeing cops seated across from me. Only the last place didn't have donuts, this one did. So at least it makes sense. It's actually a thing called a Daylight Donut Pie. The server said that they're all the rage. I got one, but it didn't rage with this machine. It was OK, but nowhere near the Bigerns in Mountain Grove Missouri. I ordered the Brisket and a side of potato salad. The Brisket was quite good, mostly because of Buddy's homemade bbq sauce. Sweet and tangy. The potato salad was no great shakes, that is until you add the bbq sauce. Then it's transformed into something exceptionally palatable. I also had a beer with my meal, despite the cops across from me. It's fun throwing caution to the wind. LoL, but I made darn sure they didn't leave when I did. Especially since I had a couple before I ate. Quick Tip: Their prices are a bit steep, but that's bbq for ya. I was supposed to get $18.55 back in change, but instead I got back $19. Traveling through the area from Chicago and saw the sign on the highway for Buddy's. We had to try it. I am really glad we did. The brisket was fantastic with good smoke while maintaining moisture. Trying all the sauces, all were really good but the Blackberry Shine sauce really stood out. Good sides as well, the beans in particular. The only thing I found remotely off in my particular opinion were the hush puppies which we similar shape and texture as a funnel cake. They tasted ok but were a bit odd and greasy. Only found them due to sign on door at old location. Was there on a Friday night and it was very busy. There is indoor and patio seating served by staff. You can also walk in for take out. Service was a little slow for us. Offerings are your typical BBQ menu. We ordered pulled pork, ribs, pulled chicken, mac-n-cheese, collards, baked beans. I thought the best item I ate was their baked beans. Had a good sweet sauce and pieces of pork. I also enjoyed their collards. Not spicey and cooked just enough. When I want BBQ I want to taste smoke with my pulled pork or ribs. My wife and I did not taste any smoke so makes me wonder how the meat is cooked. The chicken came out with a pool of water, so how is this cooked/kept before serving. Also the ribs are some of the toughest chew I've ever had. There is a little bit of something for anyone, from pork, to chicken to brisket. Even remember maybe seeing a hot dog. The mac and cheese is gooey and delicious. The hush puppies are drizzled and not round hush puppies. They are crispy yet soft, with nice flavor it makes them hard to stop eating. The cold slaw does not have too much mayonnaise and French fries are perfectly fried. The donut pies had nice flavor, but the filling to crust ratio was off which only leaves a dry donut. Buddy's new place really solves the only issue I had with Buddy's ... seating. As I'm previous reviews I would compare this place to famous places in other places in the country that I have visited. I would compare their Brisket to Franklins in Austin TX. The pork BBQ is flavorful and I would place it in the league of those in Thomasville NC all day long. I had Buddy's BBQ on my list of restaurants to try for a while. I am so glad I did, just disappointed I waited so long to eat here. I love BBQ and enjoy the different styles of BBQ from different regions. I ordered Beef Brisket and wasn't sure what to expect. A few months ago I visited Dallas/Fort Worth Texas and tried BBQ Beef Brisket at multiple top rated restaurants, and had some of the best Brisket I had ever eaten. Well that changed once I ate at Buddy's BBQ, they have the Best BBQ Beef Brisket I have ever eaten. My mom and I just moved to VA and Buddy's is right down the road from us so we stopped in last night. I was really looking forward to some good BBQ but I sure didn't get it here. The pulled pork sandwich was dry and flavorless. The stale bun crumbled when I picked it up. The sauce is watery and not very good. The hush puppies look like onion rings. Apparently they squirt the batter into oil like a funnel cake. Most of mine were way over fried and all were room temperature. The ones that weren't burnt tasted good. They'd have been great if they were hot. My mom had the brisket and it was also dry and flavorless. The beans weren't too bad and the Pepsi was great!
