Sausage calzone. Best thing I ate there and only $5. Hot crispy and fresh.
    Peijean T.

New casual Italian street food joint in Little Italy next to the bustling Waterfront bar. Food was pretty good but not mind blowingly delicious. This place earns its fourth star as service was outstanding, prices are on par, there was no wait, and we got a small order of two fried mozzarella sticks for free with our Yelp check-in. It seems much of the food is pre-made and then heated up to be piping hot (like the lasagna). Some clearly seemed made to order, like the fried chicken and fried artichokes. There are tons of desserts in their display case, including tortes and traditional or strawberry tiramisu. I only really liked the sausage calzone ($5), which was pretty small but delicious especially the crust. The lasagna was huge for only $9, and tasted homemade (light not heavy or salty) but I wasn't wow'd. The fried artichokes (tiny pieces instead of big leaves) were on the soft side not too crunchy. The fried chicken ($9) which is a specialty here was just OK-- small panko-battered thigh cutlets with a decent flavor. The place was almost entirely empty on a weekend evening, and my dining companions and I were seated right away on the outside patio. There are not a lot of seats but this doesn't seem to be a problem. The bathroom is located down the block, and you have to get a key from the staff. My companions chose to wait until they got home because they didn't want to bother but I didn't find it too annoying. BOTTOM LINE: A nice place for a quick meal with excellent service, but food was not especially memorable. I might go back to try a tiramisu since in Italy tiramisu is better at takeaway places versus sit down restaurants.

Sausage calzone. They told me this is the best one.

It was about 11 pm on a Saturday and we were craving Italian food. Nothing was open, so we Ubered over here to find some good, piping hot drunk Italian food. Once we got here, we realized it was more of a deli/bakery and nothing is freshly made to order. However, being drunk and hungry, we went with it anyway. Besides, some foods taste great reheated - leftover pizza, for instance. Ironically that was the one Italian staple they didn't have. We ordered at the counter and decided on their pesto lasagna, meatballs, a sausage calzone, and mozzarella sticks (free with Yelp check-in). After about 15 minutes, our food arrived and some were hot, some lukewarm. I guess when there's only one microwave oven, this is what happens...one dish is bound to be cold! Breakdown of our dishes: Pesto lasagna - this was extremely cheesy. In fact, it was just a mound of melted mozzarella with bits of pesto melted in and lasagna noodles stuck in between. No mushrooms or veggies? Too bad. This dish could have been a gem if it had more goodies inside! Meatballs - lukewarm and doughy, although the marinara sauce was tasty. It came with a side salad, which was baby lettuce with a bit of parmesan and a small plastic container of olive oil. We used the marinara sauce instead for flavor (weird but not bad) because I didn't feel like dousing my salad with plain oil. Not worth the calories! Sausage calzone - pretty good. Add this to the list of foods that taste good when reheated! I think they fried it up, so the edges were golden brown and it didn't taste like microwaved leftovers like the other dishes. The inside had bits of cheese and sausage. What's not to like? Mozzarella sticks - pretty good. Standard mozzarella sticks. All in all, I'm thinking the great reviews are really for the bakery goods and not the food. If I'm ever drunk and lost in Little Italy without a car, I'll think about having a late night dessert instead of late night foods cooked by Chef Mic (microwave).

This charming, simple Italian restaurant immediately skyrocketed to the top of my list of favorite spots in San Diego. Surrounded by fancier, more upscale Italian restaurants, Cookbook Tavola Calda is a refreshing, casual alternative with amazing food at a good price. While out on the town for my friend's birthday, my guy and I wandered over from the overcrowded Waterfront next door to get some fresh air and a bite to eat. Cookbook was right next door and was absolutely perfect as we just wanted a quick meal. Being a visual person and liking to see what I'm about to eat, I appreciated that the food is placed in a large bakery-style display case. We decided to order two dishes to share and we chose the Pesto Lasagna ($9) and Mac 'n' Cheese Affumicato ($7). Honestly, we couldn't decide which dish we enjoyed more. They were both phenomenal! The mac and cheese had a great smoky taste that wasn't overpowering and the pesto lasagna practically melted in my mouth. We cleaned the plates and barely resisted the urge to lick them and were both happily stuffed. I noticed after we bought our food that I got an order of mozzarella sticks for free for checking in on Yelp. We went back up to the counter and they happily accepted our deal without any questions. The mozzarella sticks were also amazing. In fact, my boyfriend liked them so much that he stole the last bite of my stick! Although I rarely find myself in Little Italy, I will remember Cookbook for the next time I visit the area and I will recommend it to any friends who happen to be in the area. Who knows? I may even make a special trip to Little Italy just to pick up dinner someday too!

Our office came here for a team builder/retreat and loved it! We had the option of cooking 2 different pasta dishes and learned how to make them from scratch. This was a great experience! Chef Gregorio was very patient and exciting to work with. His specialty is tiramisu and just to die for. I loved the experience as I never cooked pasta from scratch. Highly recommend to anyone even if you don't know how to boil water.

We just had a fantastic work event / cooking class here with close to 40 people. Location made for a lovely evening and the cooking class everyone enjoyed. The home made spaghetti noodles and meat sauce was definitely the hit. Lots of comments how much people enjoyed the lesson and learning how to make the dinner as much as they loved the food. Thank you for a lovely evening!

Unfortunately, this review is only for their dessert and coffee, given that I had eaten earlier in the evening before coming, so my review will only reflect that, but I certainly intend to return to try the savory. For my coffee, I had an Americano by illy, an Italian coffee roasting company, and the Torta Alla Ricotta which came with ricotta cheese cream and chocolate chips on a beautifully prepared pastry with a light dusting of a light chocolate (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cookbook-tavola-calda-san-diego-2?select=8l4AXUPh8a8XNg0d5xBa4Q#OtJeuaoDGKRJOH_w4XmhAA). The torta was quite a treat filled with semi sweet rich ricotta cheese only to be pleasantly disturbed by a sweet chocolate chip morsel (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cookbook-tavola-calda-san-diego-2?select=8l4AXUPh8a8XNg0d5xBa4Q#9Sp1w64FmXSaapPxtZGb8w). Luckily these little morsels were quite large in the dessert. The crust was expertly prepared with its light golden color, perfect flakiness, and subtle flavor that allowed the baked ricotta to shine as it did (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cookbook-tavola-calda-san-diego-2?select=8l4AXUPh8a8XNg0d5xBa4Q#ibYJ4woQz7usjF1xDZp5lw). I great dessert that went perfect with the Americano. The illy Americano was excellent. I provided a smooth flavor, yet strong little bite. The raw sugar on the side was a very nice touch (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cookbook-tavola-calda-san-diego-2?select=8l4AXUPh8a8XNg0d5xBa4Q#OU1qVJljBeryVG5GZKQilg), and I can not say enough, for the chocolate salami, which was rich in chocolate flavor and soft with moist cake (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cookbook-tavola-calda-san-diego-2?select=8l4AXUPh8a8XNg0d5xBa4Q#AncLkNNSXOt8kHibw7hKow). It went well with the coffee. The owner and employees are very nice, and put in that extra effort to make sure you had a pleasant and enjoyable meal. They are open late, so if you work and live in the Little Italy, this is a great spot for a late meal, snack, or much needed espresso to stay up even later! Bring it!

I just wanted a snack and this was PERFECT. I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful infused water and very clean interior space. For my snack, I chose a risotto ball. #1 I love risotto. #2 when you buy risotto at a restaurant is usually a $15 + dish. Here, I got my fix of risotto with cheese for $3. Not bad. Try the risotto ball! Then I saw that you get free mozzarella sticks work check in. Score! These were two of the best tasting mozzarella sticks I've ever had. Is come back for them and pay full price. Cheesy and flavored nicely. Not greasy at all. Definitely come here for the mozarella sticks! The marinara sauce was good, but a little too light and sweet for my usual taste, but I still enjoyed it. I confess that while waiting for my snacks, the dessert case caught my eye and I settled on a tart that was inspired by cannolis. I liked it enough that I desire to go back and try more desserts one day. So this is not your typical little Italy eatery, but I found it to hit the spot for exactly what I was looking for. A snack, and the price was right. Maybe I'll try the coffee and some real food sometime. So stop in, if you're passing by, like me or if you can't get a seat at the historic Waterfront bar next door, stop in here instead. :) So, you want a new place to try? This is 5 months new as I write this. Come here. Check in. Get free mozzarella sticks and then pick one new thing to try. Then tell me all about it ;)

Great cooking class by Chef Gregorio! We just completed a Valentine's Day pastry special with chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate salamis. Yes... I said "chocolate salamis." Delicious!

I heard about Cookbook from a friend who also lives in Little Italy. She was raving about the free delivery and amazing food. Take out and delivery is available by phone. But the trendy ambiance of the place is worth a visit. I love the colors and the welcoming environment. Plus, there are free mozzarella sticks with Yelp check-in, so make sure to get on that because the mozzarella sticks are pretty amazing. I like the tuna sandwich. It's obvious the ingredients are fresh. Cookbook's got all your favorite Italian meals - lasagna, calzones, and meatballs. There is seating outside and inside, and you get beer and wine too. There are lots of dessert options, so leave room for sweets! Staff is really friendly and helpful. You can even drop off your business card for a drawing for a free lunch.

shells stuffed with spinach and ricotta - very good!
    Melanie C.

Very good, solid Italian "street food." I had the featured vegetarian entree (large pasta shells stuffed with spinach and ricotta), husband had the chicken curry. These 2 entrees and 2 beers came out to just under $30. Friendly, authentic service. Peroni on tap is an awesome option for anyone nostalgic for days drinking (lots) of this beer while on vacation in Italy.

This place is absolutely to die for! They have house made mozzarella sticks that may be the best I've ever had. Everything from the calzone to the tiramisu was delicious :) To top it off - we brought our puppy and our waitress brought him water and some treats. This will definitely be one of our go-to's in Little Italy!

I'm truly surprised at the 4.5 score here, but maybe they were having an off day when I visited this past weekend. A friend and I decided to do our own progressive dinner given the large amount of 4+ star yelp rated spots in the area. Because of the cheese stick yelp deal, we started here for apps. To start, I was genuinely impressed with the service. The young man who ran the register also ran food, drinks and seemed happy that we had decided to stop in -- all positives. However, once the food came, the positives basically stopped. The cheese sticks were average, at best. They were a bit too greasy and the marinara came cold. It also came cold with the over-fried, somewhat hollow Mushroom Arancini. The most disappointing dish we tried was the stuffed peppers. I really wanted to like these as the presentation was on point, however it was soggy and super bland. There are so so many good restaurants in the area -- I would suggest skipping this one.

We made those Spinach Raviolis! They were so delicious!

Our office just spent an afternoon with Chef Gregorio and what fun it was! We were welcomed to our Italian cooking class with some amazing apps; Red Bell Pepper Mouse crostini & Asparagus crostini - SO GOOD! Chef Gregorio had us entertained all afternoon, teaching us about the origin of Pasta, where to buy the best produce (OB Farmers Market!), rolling out the dough and preparing our homemade ravioli! We all had opportunities to work hands on and had so much fun. Our pasta was great(!) and as soon as we thought we were done, he presented us with some super delicious Tiramisu! Thank you Chef Gregorio, we had a great time!

Is this business still open? I've tried calling the phone number and emailed to inquire about a cooking class but cannot get a hold of anyone.

Hello Sydney. Yes we still operating but we are in the process to move to Santa Barbara. So…

In a handful of hours she shared her years of cooking experience in such a cordial, pleasant manner that even a kitchen novice could be comfortable. The more experienced in the kitchen gained tips and skills. (I can now confidently make a Beurre Blanc sauce, one of the French Master Sauces, to which we added a few strands of saffron and a generous dash of cayenne.). Beyond the food---a soft and tender halibut with the aforementioned Beurre Blanc, a fricassee of vegetables, a fresh garden salad with homemade ricotta sprinkled on it, and a blood orange upside-down cake----we dined on the presence and persona of Chef Laurence herself. Not only is she a chef extraordinaire but she is a wonderful person who shares her life as easily as she shares her home. When you sign up for her session, you get a four-course meal that consists of great food, culinary knowledge, exceptional hospitality, and an experience with a pleasant beautiful person who reminds you of the pleasures life has to offer.

We started with a trip to the farmer's market, where Laurence pointed out different items and talked through the differences in different types of food (green garlic was new to me!). We later met at her home, and the cooking began. She did a good job of rotating the tasks throughout the group, and explaining the techniques as she went. We got to taste as we went, and after all the chopping was done, wine was served. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the other participants were friendly and engaged, making it a fun, social experience as well. Overall, as a one-time experience, it was fun and exciting for me. That said, after reading the reviews below, I have to agree w/many of them. Cozy Meals did mentioned that the class would be four people per group, but in reality, we were packed elbow-to-elbow around the cooking table and barely got to do much hands-on cooking. Still, I had a great time. The setup was beautiful, and the staff were friendly and helpful (Chefs runners). Our puff pastry dough didn't want to cooperate, it had been left out too long and became too warm, so we struggled rolling it big enough to wrap the beef properly. Even so, the final dish was still delicious. Unfortunately, we did leave hungry still. Extra star for the easy parking and its location. The first two hours are free, w/ additional hours at $2. Sur La Table is located inside a mall, with plenty of options to grab a snack or drink after class and there's even a Costco within walking distance! Ps. Please wash the aprons. We were also taught how to prepare tamasa from scratch. Honestly, it was mostly my daughter doing all the cooking while I listened and admired her skills Chef Zach led the class and was so helpful, along with two assistants who were constantly checking on everyone and guiding us through each step. Betty has many positive reviews, which is one of the reasons I hired her, so my assumption is that smaller events may be a better fit for her business. However, based on my experience with a wedding of over 100 guests, I would not hire her again. The overall customer experience, communication, staffing, and execution did not meet expectations. Positives: * Betty was very helpful during the initial planning process. I originally reached out looking for bartending services, and she was able to provide catering, dinnerware, linens, and other items that reduced the amount of rentals I needed. * She created a beautiful custom menu and was accommodating when guest counts needed to be updated. * The appetizer presentation looked great and was well received by guests. * The enchilada soup was good. * She provided a cake knife for our cake cutting. * Food service itself was not excessively slow despite the size of the event. Negatives: * The staffing and service provided did not match what was outlined in our contract, and there was never any acknowledgment, explanation, or follow-up regarding those issues. * Our contract included two bartenders, but only one actually showed up. While the bartender who was present had a good attitude, I was told by guests that he arrived approximately an hour and a half late. I did not even realize until afterward that my friends were pouring me drinks, and guests were serving themselves drinks while waiting for bar service. * We ran out of food, despite six guests from my final headcount not attending, 14 of the guests being children, and three people that I know of not eating due to there being no food available. * There were no plates available when appetizers were first being served * We also did not have enough utensils for guests, and plastic utensils had to be used. I would have rented plates and utensils if that's what was needed. But I was told that she had them, which she did but not enough. * Communication became increasingly stressful after booking and I often felt uncomfortable asking questions or making updates. * I was contacted for final payment before the payment date outlined in our contract, which created unnecessary stress as I had intentionally planned my RSVP deadline around the contract timeline. * a little bit before the wedding, concerns regarding the venue change were raised (not kindly). I had previously asked what would be needed at the venue and was told that power was the primary requirement, so that was my understanding going into the event. There appeared to be a miscommunication regarding additional needs, including concerns about water access that had already been discussed prior to the wedding. While a solution was ultimately worked out and water was available on the wedding day, the way these concerns were communicated created unnecessary stress during an already busy and emotional time.

My wife and I recently took a class here called "Date Night: Spanish Tapas." The class taught us…read morehow to make several Spanish dishes including Spinach and Manchego Croquetas, Pan Con Tomate and Jamon Serrano, Tortilla Espagnola, and Pork Belly with Membrino Glaze. I'll be completely honest. I was not excited about taking this class. I hate cooking food as much as I love eating it. But the wife dragged me out here anyway. So what's my verdict? As my rating indicates, I was completely wrong about this class. It was a fun experience from start to finish. Chef May did a fantastic job walking us through how to prepare each dish before releasing us to our own individual stations, easing my concern that I would screw things up. When we needed any assistance, she was right there to jump in and provide support. I would be amiss if I didn't mention the best part of the class which is eating the food we made. Every dish was delicious. I especially loved the Pan Con Tomate and Jamon Serrano, and Pork Belly with Membrino Glaze. I would definitely recommend taking a class here. If they could make a guy like me who hates cooking enjoy the experience, they must be doing something right. We'll be back very soon for an encore. We're signed up for the Pan Pizza class. Looking forward to it!

My partner and I took this cooking class as a date experience. While our chef was truly wonderful,…read morekind, welcoming, and very professional, the overall class didn't meet our expectations for the price. The class structure made it hard to learn honestly. instead of cooking step by step together, all instructions were given at once and we were left to cook independently, which was overwhelming and difficult to remember details like which ingredients to add/when, how long to cook things for and proper technique, especially for beginners. A power outage that required sharing burners added to the disorganization. We were also surprised to be required to share ingredients (including raw meat) with someone we didn't know across from us, which felt awkward for an expensive date experience. There was no clear wrap up at the end, and people began eating and leaving without much direction. Again our chef was great, and we enjoyed the stories and history behind the dishes, but overall the cooking lesson experience didn't match the cost or the hands on learning we were expecting.
