I would like to warn people not to hire this company, now renamed AP Home Improvements and Repair…read moreLLC, in Gill. The owner is Andrew Paige and his employee is David A. Walker Jr. I interviewed them in the fall to do a kitchen remodel for me. When I asked, Mr. Paige told me he was a registered home improvement contractor and Mr. Walker told me he was a licensed construction supervisor with 20 years of experience. They seemed very agreeable, personable and flexible. Mr. Paige was just starting up his business and offered that I could purchase tools for them and we would take it off the labor cost. I became frustrated because Mr. Paige was showing up very inconsistently and always asking to be advanced more money. I tried to make it work because I wanted the project done. But eventually I started asking about permits and they got skittish and tried to dissuade me. Once I insisted on getting them, Mr. Walker told me he would call the building inspector, and he recounted a conversation to me that he had with someone there, who I later found out from the actual building inspector, is not a real person. Mr. Paige meanwhile said he would help me obtain the permits and then stood me up every day for a week, stalling my ability to get them and move forward. At that point I looked them up on the state registration and licensing boards, which of course I wish I had done to begin with. I discovered they had lied to me from day one. I later confirmed with the HIC registry that they have no record of Mr. Paige's ever applying, and I confirmed with the state public safety board that Mr. Walker has never been licensed in MA. Operating this kind of business in MA without an HIC registration is illegal. Additionally if someone operates this kind of business without an HIC registration, you as the homeowner have less recourse to get help from the state if there is a problem. When I confronted them about their misrepresentations they vanished. They did plumbing and electrical work themselves in my home that they were not licensed or qualified to do, that I have had to pay to correct, because it was hazardous. I did not understand it was out of their scope; I knew very little at the time about how these things work. I am out an enormous amount of money and most of the work on my kitchen still needs doing. I was lucky I found someone who is actually qualified willing to do it. These folks took advantage of me and were in my house regularly and got to know my children. Mr. Paige continues to post photos of the interior of my home on social media to promote his company and when I contacted him he refused to take anything down. He also is promoting his company as "fully licensed" - which is clearly a lie. I have tried to go through the Better Business Bureau to resolve this and get something back, but unsurprisingly, Mr. Paige hasn't responded. I am embarrassed to be in this position but mostly I would like to spare other people the same type of experience. It has been unbelievably stressful and costly.

We hired Renaissance Builders for an addition to our home. The Excavators did a very fine job and…read moreI have no complaints whatsoever about that portion of the business. The building contractor side is another story: some subcontractors were good, others not. And the Renaissance employee overseeing the project who was also the lead carpenter was unconcerned about quality. This was a time and materials contract, but on quite a few occasions I had to fight to have things redone because the work was not done well nor correctly (the wood floor, in particular). Following the blue prints were a suggestion in their mind. I could go on and on: when I insisted that they install the correct threshold, they finally did but then nailed it in severing the wire for the radiant heat flooring. Now half of the addition has radiant heat, the other half doesn't. When they found some rot on the sill of the older portion of the house they repaired that, but then left all the rot on the framing, failed to point it out and then covered it up and resided the wall, leaving the rot in place. Why? Insisting that there were no replacement skylights, but they could replace the glass (the seal between the panes had broken and they were foggy.) 9 months later their repair failed, now leaking rain into the house. When I insisted that they fix this problem, it was found that, indeed, there were standard Velux skylights that fit. By now it is winter and I had to pay a premium for that work to be done. In sum, I would suggest that there are many builders out there that care about the quality of the work they do and take pride in their work. Renaissance is not one of them.
