A friend and I were hungry and decided to go to Cooks because it was nearby. I was a little cautious at first because this place is definitely what you would consider a dive, but we left impressed. The food was good and the price was just right for a filling breakfast. I got the peanut butter banana French toast and it tasted really fresh, the best part it was only $6! The service was good, and our waitress was friendly and helpful. I will definitely come back when I'm in town. I would choose Cooks ten times over before I went back to village inn or Perkins. read more

First off, you have to understand the rules. Rule #1 - from scratch cinnamon rolls with buttercream icing can be ordered at will and shared with someone you love which creates good karma for all involved. Rule #2- if you find a diner with homemade corn beef hash, order it. Rule #3- if you're lucky enough to find both in one place with a charming Bridget to serve you, close your eyes, send up a prayer of thanksgiving, and enjoy. Hubs and I are in Lincoln as part of our see the state capitals endeavor and trusted the yelpers to tell us about breakfast. We landed at Cooks cafe and did indeed share an excellent warm cinnamon roll. Hubs ordered the hash, which was great, I ordered a half order of Biscuits and gravy, very tender biscuits with tasty gravy. We shared an order of crispy brown on the outside tender and soft on the inside hash browns and hubs got a pancake which was huge and really good. The lovely Bridget kept the coffee coming as she flew around the dining room caring for tables with the best attitude ever, perfect diner service, jokey, speedy altogether awesome. Only downside was they were busy and we were seated at a table next to the bus cart, which was loud! when the bus guy crashed dishes in to the tubs. We came here with our two sons (10 and 7) and it was one of the best diner breakfasts we've ever had! We ordered the corned beef hash meal, the city boy meal (sausage, hash browns, gravy, eggs), the 6oz sirloin steak meal, and the French toast. You don't except much from a $10 steak breakfast meal but the steak was tender, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Eggs were made to order. We only wished we had more room to try the homemade cinnamon rolls! The staff was friendly, energized, quick and attentive. Simply the best place to eat breakfast in Lincoln. The chicken fried steak is the best I have ever eaten and their omelets are outstanding as well, not to mention about a pound and a half. I always say the cooks at Cook's have one motto: "When in doubt, add more butter," which is good for making food by scratch, which Cook's does and I love. Though they do not have delivery, one can order food to go. I have to agree with Eric that Gabby's experience was an anomaly. The waitresses are usually very good about keeping cups full and the customers satisfied. I highly recommend this place if one likes a greasy spoon. In fact, I live 3 minutes from Hi-Way Diner and 20 minutes from Cook's, but I travel across town to eat at Cook's- and Hi-Way Diner isn't bad by any means. read more

This is a pretty non-descript restaurant in the older part of Lincoln. It is a real neighborhood cafe, with really good homestyle food. We were there for breakfast and were given good sized portions that were tasty. I had a pancake, with bacon and hashbrowns. The staff is very friendly and kept the coffee coming! I was very unsatisfied with this restaurant. We waited over 60 minutes as they refused to put 2 tables together to seat our party of 8. The servers were rude, reaching through and over the top of us to pour water and hot coffee. Our server couldn't understand the 3 items from ala carte that I wanted to order. I repeated it several times. Part way through taking our order the server got distracted by another table and left us to go talk to them. My order, even though I repeated it three times was wrong. I had not ordered cheese and that was on the bill. The food took 45 minutes to arrive and it was cold! The restaurant was filthy, stained carpet, flies, servers wore filthy clothing. The restroom was also filthy. I would give it no stars, but that was not an option. Village Inn would be a better choice and most people don't care for VI. read more

Our favorite place for many years for breakfast in Lincoln. Most always keep the coffee cup topped off for always the same temp brew. Long time waitress bought the place Jan '14 and it's a much happier place but now there is often a line to get in. Tables turn pretty quickly so lines aren't too bad. I don't agree at all with "Gabby" and her review. Sounds like she had something stuck up in her craw the day she came in. Cook's is Great! We eat breakfast there every Sunday morning and more often if we can. We've been there for suppers, fish fries, and other holiday specials and the food was ALWAYS great. The Service---you couldn't find any better or nicer or more helpful, sweet gals than the ones that wait on you at Cook's Cafe. I give this cafe a five star rating for all around service and taste. read more
