This park is insane…read more It features (a) green open areas aplenty, (b) ocean views, (c) clean restrooms, (d) baseball/softball diamonds, (e) soccer fields, (f) tennis/pickleball courts, (g) plenty of parking, (h) a playground with an ocean view, (i) cute little critters running around, (j) picnic tables with some shade, and (k) so much more. It would have been the perfect sandwich park, except that we had already eaten a late breakfast followed by Balboa Bars as we walked around Balboa Island and Little Balboa Island, so we weren't hungry yet. Oh, well, next time! The neighborhood that surrounds the park is cute as well, but it still looks and feels 1970s middle class even though it's 2020s upper class. As in most parks, the playground is surrounded by benches so that parents/uncles/aunts/older siblings/nannies can take a load off while their charges are at play, but one of the benches has its back to the playground, because who wants to watch kids when you can relax and watch the ocean and the tops of the cliffs surrounding it--all from the comfort of the edge of a playground? That wisely rotated bench is what brings the rating up to five stars.

People are so pleasant.. It's just a great community of partygoers. Dog, friendly kid, friendly. Everyone was very polite about putting their umbrellas down when the performers came on. These vibrant purple blooms attract all kinds of birds, especially hummingbirds, which is a big reason I keep coming back. Most of my visits have been for bird photography, and the flowers provide endless opportunities to watch and photograph hummingbirds feeding on the blossoms. Even if you're not into birding, it's a wonderful place to take a leisurely walk, enjoy the scenery, and soak in a little peace and quiet away from the busy city. My only complaint is the parking situation. Street parking is very limited, so finding a spot can be a challenge, especially during busier times. Other than that, it's a lovely park and a hidden gem for both nature lovers and photographers.

There is a $50 deposit which you get back, and you pay based on how many people and hours you plan on staying +if you are a non-resident different prices. There is a restroom nearby the playground and shelter and it is fairly clean for a park restroom. You do not get a lot of foot traffic around there which is great, lots of parking available, and areas for kids to play, adults to relax, and for dogs to run around including a field.

There are 4 softball fields, 2 volleyball courts, covered area with picnic tables, small grills, a small playground for kids, a concession area open for softball tournaments and bathrooms. The fields are well maintained and are host to dozen of tournaments a year. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are not well maintained and I wouldn't recommend using them unless it is an emergency. The other detractor is the size of the parking lot. Under normal conditions, it can support the park guests. But if there is a tournament, the parking quickly overflows into the street and can be a hazard for those trying to drive on Via Linda and Los Viveros. Turning onto Via Linda from Los Viveros can become a blind turn with all the parked cars and Via Linda becomes very narrow with cars parked on both sides of the street. I have also seen people getting ticketed for parking in areas which are clearing marked as "No Parking at Any Time". Overall, this is a really great park. Chief really loves coming down here and walking around and so does his owner.
