Ripped screens, crappy seats, sticky floors and screaming patrons. Seriously? You really wanna pay out $9 to watch a flick here? Midnight female wrestling? Seriously? Look - you wanna watch a hollywood movie? Go to the Boston Common theater. You wanna watch an indi? Shlep on down to Kendall Square theater. A non-profit movie theater? Whoever knew such a thing existed? Well, it does, and it's pretty damn fantastic. Come here often and you'll get to have all kinds of viewing experiences, from the large screen downstairs, which feels like watching a movie at an opera house in the 1930s, to the tiny room upstairs, which feels like watching a movie in your friend's living room. They show all kinds of movies which are hard to find anywhere else (even among the handful of indie theaters in the area), along with the occasional cult classic thrown in for good measure. Their snack bar has all kinds of fun treats you won't find anywhere else, including a craft soda fountain and frozen bananas (insert Arrested Development joke here) and even better, they recently started serving wine and beer after 4! I am a member of the Coolidge corner theatre and cannot say anything bad about this place. They play endless amounts of movies from all different genres and all different programs. I love their big screen classics on Mondays and their special one off events they have here (All three lord of the rings movies in a row with a Q&A from Viggo Mortensen is still the best movie experience my boyfriend and I ever had - thanks Coolidge!) My boyfriend and I come here about once a week and see almost every movie they have playing. They have boylans soda on tap and a great selection of beer as well. The Coolidge also lets you bring in outside food (full pizzas, burritos, whatever) which is always a plus. This place spares you the agony of going to big name places like AMC and cares deeply about everything they do and present and it shows! My boyfriend and I have half joked about never moving out of this area because we wouldn't have the Coolidge. If you love going to the movies I really suggest investing in a membership because it pays for itself and you help out a great non profit. read more

Surely you know that it's the place to see indie films, the place to go with a date to see indie films because of the great neighborhood full of after-show eateries. I expect you also know that this theatre is vintage, that $.50 of your movie ticket is being directed to restoration, and that it's totally worth it, because the main theatre is quite impressive and the lower theatres are intimate and serve an important purpose for us who like to watch certain films on a big screen but not necessarily in a sparsely populated theatre. But what you may not know about the Coolidge is that it operates as a non-profit, that a single membership is $60 for the year - $20 of which is tax deductible. Viva Coolidge Corner Theatre! I love this retro, comfy, friendly, artsy-not-fartsy movie theatre. The theatre feels like you're in an opera house or symphony hall. The previews are minimal and the view and sound is great. My friend and I saw Juno last night, which I highly recommend also, and you should try to see it here versus the other commercial and high-priced venues. Generally if there is a movie you want to see, check if it is playing here first. Get there early, buy your tickets and then go for a meal at one of the many diverse restaurants in the area. This place has charm, character, popcorn, beer, snacks, great employees, and screams old time movie theatre. We try to come to the Coolidge any chance we can. They usually play Oscar and Indi nominated films, along with current popular and unpopular movies. They also have routinely have limited events of classic favorites from all eras. There's two main full size screens, and several other smaller rooms with very limited seating for smaller viewings. One thing to note is that this place is a non-profit organization. The money they make is to pay the employees and keep this magical place alive. If we lose places like this, we lose our past. We love this place! read more

I have never seen a bad movie at the Coolidge. Part of the credit goes to my mega film buff movie buddy who has an RSS feed from Rotten Tomatoes streaming directly to his brain, but a lot of it also goes to the Coolidge for their great selections. They also host a range of special events. Two of my favorites are the Buffy Sing-Along ("Once More, With Feeling" on the big screen = love), and the Boston Babydolls ladies only burlesque show. (I have to admit bias on that last one, since I know some of the Babydolls, but it's still a great event - it always sells out.) Add in the deco style theatres, intimate screening rooms, and non-crappy concession counter, and you get the best movie venue in Boston. read more

I love the Coolidge! The midnight programming is fantastic! I do wish that their regular programming were a bit more adventurous. They often fill the larger screens with "indie" films that are playing at the other art house cinemas in the area. The series programming makes up for it- with gems such as "off the couch" and the 3D film festival. The snacks are brilliant, inspired even- with high end chocolate, coffee and ice cream. In 4 simple words, I love the Coolidge. I love the movies, I love the people, I love the ambiance, I love being a member - $40 well spent. I find that I'm often unable to express how great the Coolidge truly is with just words; the best way to really articulate it is to let people see for themselves. I guess I'll go on record saying that this is my favorite movie theater in the Boston area. It's not very convenient for me to get to and the seats aren't very comfortable, but it has a whole lot going for it. It usually shows the good new movies that come out. You won't find the new Will Ferrell comedy here but you'll find most of the movies that have piled on the awards in festivals and the future oscar pics here. The real reason I love this place so is the events. The midnight movies, the theme nights (kung-fu, horror, exploitation flicks), the Found Magazine short films, the classic Atari and Nintendo night they did a while back, seeing Calvin Johnson and that other guy playing their rock and roll, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sing-a-long, the Freaks and Geeks slumber party... AWESOME! I've seen a number of movies here, and also went to a fun book reading by Dave Barry, who is probably one of the funniest people in the world. It's a great place to see a midnight movie, or catch an updated release (I saw Yellow Submarine with music nerd friends and it made me really happy). An excellent independent movie theater. There are always great films showing, for a decent price, considering that I'm spending up to 12 bucks to see a crappy movie at a Lowe's on a Saturday night. I recently went to the 3d movie festival back in May, and it was an awesome experience. I rode bikes with my friends to see the 9:30 showing of the original House of Wax, complete with stylish 3-D glasses. And not the cheesy blue and red kind you find in cereal boxes; official Coolidge Corner Theatre 3-D specs that made Vincent Price in all of his bearded glory seem like he was standing directly in front of me. Anyway, go here and enjoy the thrills of old classics, but also new quality films. (I recently saw There Will Be Blood and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, two quality films that ended up winning a bunch of awards.But I'm sure you knew that already) TIPS: - Listen to WZBC 90.3fm, Boston College's radio station. I work there and we give out pairs of tickets to every film at 8:30am, 11:30am, 2:30pm, and 4:30pm. - After getting free tickets, buy a ton of popcorn, candy, and soda. Not only will the free tickets leave you with plenty to spend, but independent theaters like Coolidge don't make much money at all on the ticket sales. Most of their revenue comes from concessions. Do your part in keeping great establishments like this open. read more

I think the CCT is a good place to go on a rainy day. Or, maybe a sunny day with a light breeze, but not too sunny, I mean who wants to go the movies on nice weather days? Well, maybe movie buffs. And people who really like to sit in dark theatres and eat popcorn, candy, etc. Would you go on a snowy day, you ask? I know you were thinking that...why not? Well, there is not much free parking in the area, so you might be SOL...but there is a parking lot around the corner near the citizen's bank. My bus line, the invisible 66 runs past this place too. I have no idea how and why it actually arrived to drive me home a mere minutes after I left the theatre. STRANGE! This place is great. Awesome interior makes you feel like you are back in the 20s or 30s. The focus is on independent, foreign and vintage films. They also have cool midnight showings. Also, the popcorn here is really, really good. This is one theater where I don't mind paying high prices for the snacks and drinks because you know you're doing a good thing helping this awesome place stay open. GodDAMN I heart this place! This place is always showing the only movies I want to see. It's a bit cheaper than the big chain theatres and the location couldn't be better (though parking can be a bitch). Whenever a movie is showing elsewhere, I always prefer to see it here instead. But, I prefer indie movies and indie theatres as a rule, so I'm pretty biased. Yes, the theatres are old and sometimes really small, but that doesn't bother me in the least. I even like their popcorn! Many people talk of bringing in their own stuff---given that there's so much in Coolidge Corner, it's definitely doable. Is it perfect? No. In fact, it's an old theater. However, what it may lack in the most up-to-date tech geek crap, it more than makes up for with the quality of films it shows. I had been wanting to come here for soooo long but didn't take the plunge till last night to see Shutter Island (crazyass movie btw!). Ahhh I've been missing out. This place is sooo awesome! It's an old theater but they do such a great job of keeping it clean and restored. It's small of course, but that's what adds to its charm. Prices are pretty typical for any movie theater in the area ($9 for an adult ticket) but I'd much rather give my money to the Coolidge Corner Theatre than an AMC. By process of elimination, the Coolidge is the best movie theatre in the Boston area. Kendall Sq. is great, but they never have revivals or Midnight movies. The Brattle has great movies, but lousy parking and popcorn. AMC, Loews, et al...very little art-house, nothing foreign, lousy concessions, etc. The Somerville is a close second, but can never fully decide if they want to be first run or art house (nothing wrong with first run, as long as that's not ALL you do). But the Coolidge...the Coolidge knows what it is and does it's thing well. First run, art house, foreign and documentary. Main theatre is beautiful and comfortable. Special events which range from weird to awesome. Good midnight movies. Great popcorn, ice cream, they offer tap water but don't get all snotty if you want bottled. Plus there's great parking, convenient T, and good food nearby if you want to grab something before or after. Oh, sometimes it's frustrating when you assume you're going to see something on a big screen and get stuck in a tiny screening room. And lately the Midnight Movies have gone from cult classics to just cult. But this is the place where I've gone for just about everything. "La Dolce Vita" and "Six String Samurai." "Office Space" and "Hobo With a Shotgun." "Star Trek II" and "The Third Man." They love movies there, from the public, active board of directors to the "inmates running the asylum" style of the staff. I came to Coolidge Corner theater for the first time to see My Week With Marilyn, and while I did enjoy the movie, I couldn't wait to leave because I just couldn't get comfortable. This theater has the most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat in, period. They were not cushioned enough, they did not provide back support enough, and there were no head rests! I'm a fidgety person in general when I am required to sit still for any length of time longer than 10 minutes, but in this case I was squirming around so much you'd think I had ants in my pants. That being said, I echo everyone else in saying that I do love the decor and the old-fashioned theater atmosphere. So I can see why everyone else seems to love it here, but until they have decent seating, me and my bad back just can't warm up to this place. read more

I feel so lucky that this is my neighborhood theater. The movie showings are always interesting - a mix of independent films and "mainstream" movies, with some special showings in between. The main moviehouse theater is absolutely beautiful and such a special place to watch a movie. The other rooms upstairs are cozy - you should probably arrive early to grab seats. Admittedly, some of the seats in the upper-level rooms are uncomfortable and broken but not a big deal and adds character to the old theater (if you tend to look on the bright side). We have a membership, which allows us free movies after 6pm every Sunday or $3 off general admission any other day, as well as access to special events (note: this particular membership level is no longer available). Conclusion: Support this theater and buy a membership! :) read more

One of my favorite theaters in Boston. I would say that it's better than Somerville Theater, although it doesn't serve beer like Somerville does! It's a pretty old theater but they do a great job in keeping it clean and fresh-looking. It is small and without stadium seating, but this is a nice change from the huge theaters that people usually go to. It's a little cheaper than the big theaters, although I have never seen a Hollywood movie here. I usually only go for the less popular indie flicks, or for some of their other events. I especially like "Science on Screen", although I unfortunately missed the last one! I would definitely recommend checking out all their special events on their website. Even if you are only into seeing popular Hollywood movies, it's so much better to support a place like this! read more

Great place! Huge theater, lots of seating (very uncomfortable) cheap tickets, awesome films and lots of indie films! This a great place to see some great movies you won't find anywhere else. I went here twice this week alone! I saw J. Canninbals Feast of Flesh! That was just crazy all around dancing girls and zombies..pfft..what else do you need? I saw the original night of the living dead last night and a little theory on why zombies do what they do..perfect! The perfect place for seeing your not so ordinary kind of stuff you're not going to find anywhere else. The popcorn is like eating saw dust..but ah, who cares bring some smaaaaaahtfood and call it a day. When there is something like "Feast Of Flesh" I definitely would go at least an hour early or you will be way in the back of theater. The lines here go way around the back of the theater for the fun showings. Also, there's tons of parking in the back and you don't have to pay for the meters after 6:00. I grew up in a typical mid-size suburban residential neighborhood. You had to drive everywhere, and nothing looked "classic". When I found Coolidge Corner, it was like all of my dreams coming true... ...and then I saw the Coolidge Corner Theater. Some kids dream about flying cars, or teleporting...not me. I always wanted a time machine back to the days of big skirts and sweaters and the Coolidge Corner Theater. Jackpot. It's not flashy, it doesn't have space ice cream, but you know, it's a great little getaway, and in my opinion, a really cute date place. Plus - with the Upper Crust , the Creperie, and JP Licks right around the corner, you really can't go wrong for pre/post flick snacks. One stop shopping! Every now and then they also have a midnight cult classics, so it's a good weekend alternative for those times when you really can't face another Sunday morning migrane ;) read more

Saw a movie here for the first time and really enjoyed the ambiance of this local theater. If you're tired of the megaplex / blockbuster type movie theater chains, the Coolidge Corner Theatre will bring you back to a time when visiting the movies was similar to seeing a live theatre production. IMAX sounds systems won't destroy your ear drums; you won't need to move your head from side to side just to see the whole enormous headache inducing screen; and you won't find Michael Bay monstrosities here in 4D smell-o-vision. However, what you will find are quaint small theater screens that seat groups of people so small that it will feel like you're at a private screening to watch the latest Sundance nominated film. This theater continues on the cinematic experience which is slowly disappearing. Theaters like this need to be supported before they're all gone the way of the dodo bird. read more

I am quite the fan. I love the older theaters much more than new ones, and this one ticks off all my favorite things. Bar! Yes! Beer and wine. Nothing beats enjoying a film with an adult beverage. Plus, local favorites like Downeast Cider and they don't charge you an arm and a leg for it either. Awesome Programming! My boyfriend has been to the Halloween Horror Marathon for several years now. And they've employed one of my favorite local artists to pain the flyer for it too, which makes me super happy. On top of that you can see silent films with live accompaniment, Arts Boston events, kids friendly evens, midnight movies of cult classics (and non cult but still favorite films), and great showcases. I went here for a showing of The Room recently and I was not disappointed. I would consider coming back here to see more movies. One of the employees of the theater tried to appeal to the crowd, offering two free tickets to go see Red Dawn and free popcorn vouchers. No one budged. We had our plastic spoons in hand, ready to hurl them at the screen. The popcorn here is EXCELLENT! $4.00 for a "small" bowl, but excellent. read more

Ok I like this theater in general but I just HAD to complain about my experience today. I saw a matinee todsy, not a busy time for them, yet the theater was a trash-hole. No other words describe it better. The snack counter had soda, butter, and salt all over it. The rude staff member slopped my credit card in the soda and when I politely asked for a napkin to clean off my sticky card, he just pointed to the napkins- no appoligies. I ended up wiping down the counter for him!!! Again, nothing. The bathrooms were equally messy. Unsure whether the theater itself was messy, it was dark. A friend turned me on to Coolidge Corner Theater to go see Lawerence of Arabia. An awesome idea I never would have thought of myself! I like the foreign film lineup, as well as features from the various film festivals. I've been a little disapointed with the standard box office stuff these days, and I believe Coolidge Corner Theater is just the cure I have been lookin for in my entertainment/educational/cultural needs! A movie theater that is a prime example of how theaters should be run. Where do I begin with the CCT? Location: Nestled right in Coolidge Corner Theater, this is a great location for after movie drinks and dinner. Literally about 30 seconds away walking from the Green line Stop, it is not hard to miss. There is also plenty of parking directly behind with straight access to the theater as well as street parking (if you can find it). Venue: They have at least four theaters, the largest seating over 400 and the smallest at a little over a dozen. The seats are clean and I have never once experienced a sticky floor as many of the patrons take pride in this theater and actually throw away the trash. You can tell who the tourists are by the junk they leave. The entrance has an open view of the concession stands and directions to the bathroom. They have various movies and artists all over the wall. Staff: They are very friendly and know their movies. They wear no uniforms or name tags and the majority greet you with a smile of funky hair, clothes, tattoos, and piercings. They carry themselves well with a relaxed and welcoming look. Before most movies set in the largest theater, two of the higher ups will introduce the movie and have a small banter with the audience bringing about a cozy atmosphere.Whenever a problem does arise, they handle it with discretion and courtesy. Food/Prices: The popcorn here is delicious as they make it anew constantly, none of this pre bagged under a heater nonsense. They use homemade butter as well. They do offer other bits, cookies, coffee, and candy from independent vendors. They recently changed out their soda machine for this brand I never heard of, offering more flavors, I like it. The prices are quite low compared to the mainstream theaters and they do have tip jars. They also have a bar now near the entrance that serves GOOD beer and also wine. Tickets: Buying tickets is easy to do online or at the box office, even for shows in the future. My only advice would be to buy tickets at the box office as online, you will be charged a service fee that does NOT support the actual theater whereas if you buy it at the box office, all tickets have a 75 cent restoration fee (That can be waived if you want to be that guy). Certain popular movies and events will have tickets sell fast, so online may be a good idea for that reason alone. Membership: All levels of membership have perks and reduced prices on tickets. It is a wonderful way to support the theater and save money. One perfect example would be the 2 for 1 tickets for most of the midnight movies. There are different tiers that increase with price and perks. In October, they have 2 for 1 student memberships so that is a great way to start yourself off. I just renewed my own this Monday after watching "Ghostbusters". Movies/Performances: After all, this is what you came for right? They do not show many mainstream movies as it is an independent theater, but they do show a few. They have different events during the calendar year such as "The Big Lebowski Festival" where they hold a custom contest, trivia, and actual bowling. Most Mondays at 7 pm, they show an older movie, "Ghostbusters" is one. Friday and Saturday nights, they will show another movie at midnight usually in theme with the season or holiday. The CCT also has live performances, whether it be music, burlesque dancing, or a naked reading. This place has it all. Their website usually has the movies they will show ahead of time with an option to purchase said tickets. If you have not already gone, please do, you will not be disappointed. read more

You have no idea how much I have been missing theaters of this caliber since I left Denver. Coolidge was exactly what I loved about the myan and other classic beautiful theaters. I went there to see the new coen bros movie this weekend and I fell in love. My hubby loved the craft soda on tap and I loved their bar selection. Beers were a bit pricey but worth it. Bathroom were clean. Theater was huge. Movie tickets prices were very reasonable I was so happy to see they were a non profit and I would totally purchase a membership if I lived in the area. As a member of the theater, obviously I think its pretty great. But being a member has even MORE perks, such as discounts to local shops and eateries (paris creperie! brookline booksmith! coolidge corner gym!), and frequent free-for-member events. I was fortunate enough to see the five live action short films nominated for Oscars this year for FREE in their intimate, 17-seat "minimax," as well as attend one film of their "science on screen" series, in which a guest speaker introduces a film with a short, relevant lecture (I saw Woody Allen's 70s sci-fi-ish flick "Sleeper" - accompanied by a speech about stem-cell research... all for free!). Thanks for loving your members guys! They also have hilariously fun special events, like karaoke-type singalogs (ie Ladies of the 80s, including dancing in the aisles and capped off with 99 real luftballoons at the end - I think all for $5). The only gripes I have some could see as positive. Since it's a small neighborhood theater, they cut their patrons some slack. Which meant at my last moviegoing venture, I had to endure 2 hours of short films in the tiniest theater with someone who brought their massive and very curly dog (who barely fit in the theater as it was). The owner also brought a bowl of water for her dog, which he lapped up happily (and noisily) right in the middle of a deep film about women struggling with cancer. Inappropriate! read more
