While the boat ran adequately, it was obvious that maintenance and cleanliness were not priorities from the time I cranked the boat. The only gauge that functioned properly was the tachometer. The other gauges either didn't work entirely or only worked part of the time. Considering the price of the rental, I expected all of the boat's instruments to be operational. On top of that, the boat wasn't very clean when I received it. There was black, dried algae underneath the front seat cushions, which clearly indicated the boat hadn't been cleaned in the time leading up to my renting it. If they are going to charge premium rental rates, customers should receive a clean, well-maintained, fully functional boat. At the end of the day, my group had tracked a small amount of dirt into the boat. I rinsed out almost all of it before returning the boat, leaving only a little dirt on the floor. When I pulled in, Jim was already on the boat with a 5-gallon bucket ready to rinse out the boat, indicating he could clean it with that. However, Logan insisted it would require an hour with a pressure washer and charged me an additional $50 cleaning fee. Given that the area in question is only about 4 ft wide (at most) and the boat is maybe 19 ft long, a 1 hour estimate seems to be either a gross overestimation or simply intentionally dishonest to make me concede to the cleaning fee (you decide). After paying over $500 for 8 hours of rental, I find it unreasonable and dishonest to nickel-and-dime customers over a small amount of dirt that is completely predictable when people spend the day at a lake. It's even harder to accept when I know that the boat wasn't clean to begin with. The boat served its purpose, but between the poorly maintained gauges, the questionable initial cleanliness, and the unnecessary cleaning charge, I won't be renting here again. Logan clearly doesn't care about repeat business, and if this is how they treat a local, repeat customer, I can only imagine how they'll treat everyone else. I will now look to the many other marinas on Fontana Lake to give my business to. I suggest you do the same.

For those who plan to come to Lake Chatuge beware that during holidays, like Memorial Day weekend the lake is extremely packed, which makes it almost impossible to fish off the shore with the heavy traffic causing too much wake. One of the amenities is access to Fairfield Lake, an 80 acre lake at 3,160' elevation in Sapphire, NC. The lake's length is 1 mile, and it is 35' at its deepest point. The amenity card also allows us to use the private beach, picnic tables, a grill, rest room, and to rent motor boats, canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, fishing poles, etc. at the boat house. There is also a Lake Trail around the lake, which is the private property of Camp Merrie-Woode. However, the trail is open to the public (at your own risk) for hiking purposes only during daylight hours from August 15th to May 15th, when camp is not in session. Dogs are allowed but must be on leashes. We saw two brochures, one of which stated that the trail is a 3.3 mile loop while another said that it's 3.8; my Fitbit recorded 3.55 miles. The trail is mostly flat, with an occasional incline or descent, and has a variety of trail surfaces (gravel, pine needles, small rocks, tree limbs, etc.). Besides the lake, there are a few highlights on the trail -- (1) Fairfield Falls. With a height of 25', the waterfall is created by the stream of the Trays Island Creek, a tributary of the Horsepasture River, which runs along the western side of the all Bald directly into Lake Fairfield. (2) Presley Pass. The Iron Bridge across the stream above the waterfall was built by Camp Merrie-Woode caretaker, James Presley, in the mid-1950s. (3) Intersection with the trailhead for the Old Bald Trail, a more strenuous 3 mile hike. The trail is mostly well-marked with small green-white tags. We walked clockwise, and got a bit confused relatively close to our ending point (after a paved road when the signs seemed to disappear).

We were supplied with two rolls of TP and a towel/washcloth for up to four people. There are cooking utensils in drawers and a holder by stove. However the utensils in the holder by the stove had sugar ants. I didn't encounter any other big issues in the cabin, but you're in the woods...I was surprised we didn't see more. Cabin 4 has a beautiful sitting area with Adirondack chairs and a fire pit which made for relaxing evenings. The cabin is located right on the lake and we were able to set up for fishing and hang a hammock easily. My only complaint is that the cabin is supposed to come with a kayak, at no charge. We were told the kayaks had not arrived. In this situation it would have been nice to be given the option to use one at the store for no charge. This was not offered not did they allow. If we are not receiving all the items as listed then a discount or alternative option should be provided to guests. The pedal boats are $10/hr. On the site it said must be 16 to ride solo, however when renting we were told anyone in the boat had to be 16+. Another bit of information that should be corrected on their site. Luckily we made it work and they were accommodating. The store has ice cream, snacks, drinks and Knick knacks. Even firewood if you forget yours. All in all, it was a beautiful time and we made great memories!

It was well maintained and had newish appliances and plenty of cookware, cutlery and other essentials but we had brought our own anyway. Cabin #4, built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, has a back patio area with two Adirondack chairs, fire pit, and a charcoal grill. The grill is sufficient but next time I'd bring a kettle grill. The park has several hiking trails which seemed to be fairly easy. Unfortunately, we didn't go hiking because my wife broke her arm prior to us getting there. They also offer kayak, canoe, and pedal boat rentals. Overall we had a good time.

Beware. Hotdog thief flying through the park. Snatched one right off the grill.

We decided to visit Cooper Creek Trout Farm to catch our own dinner, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip! The experience was fun, affordable, and perfect for families. The staff was friendly, helpful, and made the whole process easy. Bait and a fishing rod were only about $3, and once you catch your fish, they clean it for you and charge by the pound. The kids had a blast, and there was something really satisfying about catching the fish you're going to eat later that day. Now, a word of warning--the road getting there is VERY narrow and a little intimidating. I was convinced I was about to have a panic attack on the drive up! Thankfully, my husband was behind the wheel and got us there safely. The drive may test your nerves, but the experience is absolutely worth it. Great family activity, friendly staff, fair prices, and fresh trout. We would definitely do it again. 100% recommended! read more

We had the best time at this place! We travel to Bryson city for a family reunion. My son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren from Florida and me from Illinois. My 10-year-old grandson had never been fishing, which is unacceptable in my family LOL. If you're not used to driving on narrow mountain roads, The trip there is a bit scary, but beautiful. The kids had such a great time catching trout. (It is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel) The lady who was running the place that day was very helpful. For young kids, I'd probably tether the child's tube to yours. Our two kids, 7 and 9, did fine. But, we had to make sure they rode the tubes correctly. Cowboy Tubin's prices are less than competitors by $5/pp and the run is slightly longer. They have very clean indoor changing rooms and bathrooms. Much nicer than some other places. What set her apart was the fact that she pointed out they sell sunglass retainers but if we didn't want to buy them they could tie some twine on them so we wouldn't lose them. That's rare, she had an opportunity to upsell us but didn't. Simply offered them then gave us a free option as well. As simple as it was, it was appreciated.

I've been going tubing with Cherokee Rapids on the Oconaluftee River for years and it never…read moredisappoints. The process is easy: they bus you a couple of miles upstream and you float back down to their spot on the river. The trip usually takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the water flow. The river is beautiful and the float is a great balance of peaceful drifting and fun. Most of it is calm and relaxing, but there are a few stretches of mini-rapids that make things more exciting. There's also a swimming hole and a rope swing along the way that make the trip even better. What I like most about Cherokee Rapids is the flexibility. Unlike the other company in the area, you don't have to be back at a set time to catch a bus. You can take your time, enjoy the float, and finish at their riverside landing as long as it's before 5 pm. The staff is friendly, the setup is convenient, and the overall experience is excellent. I definitely recommend Cherokee Rapids if you want a mix of relaxation, adventure, and great service.
