I was in the area and had to wait for someone to finish their appointment, so I made a quick stop for groceries (my first time) here. What a refreshing grocery shopping experience! Coppa's seems to be a local grocery chain with only three locations nearby Toronto - North York, Scarborough and King City. The aisles are wide, the space is clean, fruits, vegetables, meat seem fresh and produce neatly stacked together. They have a huge butcher section, bakery aisle, prepared foods and more. It was not busy at all Sunday late afternoon. Many times it felt like a private grocery shopping experience. Unlike Chinatown, Walmart, Costco and other chains, where sometimes you would feel like your groceries are all picked on. The prices are moderate and pretty reasonable overall. I mostly purchased fresh produce so didn't notice the prices of the packaged goods. They don't tend to stock inhouse cheap brands, like No Name and Great Value but all moderate priced brands. There seem to be deals to be had like broccoli and flour on sale. The 2.5kg Robinhood flour bag was cheaper than even Walmart. I would've wanted a 5kg bag but it was sold out. Though I would say the butter was quite expensive, $7 was the cheapest option, and it was their own Coppa-branded butter, which was just one block, not even divided into sticks. The next alternative is $8 for premium Country-churned with pre-packaged sticks. Was a bit of a splurge for two blocks. I wonder if I would be able to taste the difference between cheap and expensive butter. If I'm in the area again I'll like to try their baked goods next. read more

At least 3.5-4 Lots of airy pathways between customers, large aisles, massive store, most *not all* customers and all staff were masked. Great Italian and European selections including Middle-Eastern flatbreads and jarred/dried products. Fruit and vegetables are mostly good with some highly unusual varieties grown in Ontario. Great cheese selection and kielbasa products for those who enjoy. The selection of Italian products was astounding. I like this store and will be back. Not the best prices for regular tinned items like condensed milk for example. It's a store for specialty items as required. The meat and fish counter seemed good, didn't smell off. I have been coming to this store for 30 years. It has become a disgusting and unsafe food place to shop. Egg cartons so wet from condensation the cartons are warped. Literally wet because they are not refrigerated properly. Expiry dates of the same batch of brown eggs stamped by the farm having different expiry dates on the exterior carton. That is not supposed to happen. Dated eggs of the same batch date have the same expiry date. It's not an exact science but it is called lying to change dates of egg cartons. Not to mention the eggs have wet shells from temperate difference in an open refrigerator shelving unit and a store that is hotter than 25 degrees C In top of that no staff to help. No one cares. It use to be such a great store. Stop using covid as an excuse. And btw after the cashier convinced me to complain to the manager that I said would do nothing, after he agreed the egg cartons are wet and should t be, he touched the eggs in a carton I showed him and put everything back. I guess salmonella is on sale at Coppa! It's free with your disgusting eggs at 10 a carton. Stop blaming Covid for being a bad business. First time here, I just moved in the area and wanted to grab a bite to eat and check the store out. Service was HORRENDOUS I will never come back. I asked for a slice of pizza and the lady behind the counter said "get it yourself." The pizza was cold but I was hungry so I didn't complain. Then I went to pay. You can only buy "hot" food at the coffee counter, so I wait for the guy to make a couple coffees and pay. It took a while, but whatever the ladies were talking to him. Then as they leave this woman goes right up and ordered a coffee. He doesn't acknowledge the fact I had been waiting close to 10 mins now, nor does he ask her to wait. He just lets her go ahead and serves her, no acknowledgment at all. I put the food down and left, at that point I didn't care if I was hungry I rather spend my money elsewhere. Colour me impressed! I came here exhausted, hungry, and looking for a place open past 9pm. Coppa's it was. I go in and think "uh oh. It's awfully clean and nice. Must be expensive." And sure, it's not as cheap as No Frills, but their quality was absolutely amazing. From the produce to the meats, and the variety of "inner aisle" stuff, I was incredibly impressed. And fact is, it's not even that much more expensive. I walked out of there with a load of groceries for $40. I've definitely spent more on the same items before. What really got me was their selection of eco-friendly/sustainable items. They had a pretty big organic produce section, and their meat section had regular stuff, antibiotic free and grain fed stuff, then organic stuff, THEN kosher stuff. There was also a ton of vegan/vegetarian options in the dairy and freezer section. Basically, they had everything I wanted/needed and the only thing that kept me from staying there for an hour to browse was my rumbling stomach. And the place just smelled good. The meat and seafood smelled like nothing, which is what it SHOULD smell like, the bakery smelled like fresh bread and something in the produce aisle smelled heavenly, possibly the mangos. There are so many supermarkets around in the Thornhill area that serves my needs now that I hardly ever need to go driving south on Dufferin to visit Highland Farms. Before the Superstore opened up at Dufferin and Steeles. Highland Farms was my go to place to place to find it all. It was the king of the grocers in the area for very long time, the highlights here are the fresh produce department, extensive meat department, and cake department. My first time here at Coppa's & I'm mostly impressed. The produce aisles are nice, wide, & very neat. The whole supermarket is very clean. The bakery, meats & seafood are the largest sections in this supermarket. We got a red velvet Canada Day cake that was so delicious only a quarter of the cake is left. Things are a bit pricey here though so be selective of what you want to buy if you're on a budget. Organic produce, eggs, meats & wild caught fish are available. Not plentiful but there is a good selection given this isn't a natural food store. They also have some eco friendly cleaners, body lotions, toothpaste, shampoo etc. Parking lot is a good size. About 6 handicap parking spots & scooters available for the mobility challenged. I would definitely come here again. This is a great place to buy pastries & some organic foods. They even had fresh quail eggs! I've never seen that in any supermarket before. Hubby tells me this is normal because apparently Italians love quail eggs. read more

I had been doing all my grocery shopping at Highland Farms, Dufferin Street for about 15 years. When they started charging 5 cents for every plastic shopping bag and had no alternative means of packing my purchases I stopped shopping there. It has been over a year now and that plastic bag by law has been repealed long ago. About a month ago I went back. They are still gouging their customers 5 cents per bag. So, like the good business men they are, instead of getting $60 to $100 per week or more from me they get nothing. All that because they hoped to squeeze 50 or 60 cents extra every week out of my shopping budget. Go figure? I shop there regularly for years now. What I have noticed is since this store changed from Highland Farms to Coppa's, prices have gone up like 30% + across the board. on some items even higher 60%-100%. Olive Oil doubled in price for example. Lote of fake "sales" price tags. They use "Sales" colored and font tag but no discount on it, just regular price. I've notice other groc stores do the same. They have medium size ready food section, lot of them are brought in, some items prepared in store. The only thing I can eat there is pepperoni pizza. Other pizzas are very weird, like broccoli with green peppers and ham... They also sell broiled chicken. In emergencies I used to buy but they don't smell good, TBH they smell old. Not a documented fact but I think they broil chicken that has reached its shelf-life and no longer possible to sell as raw; so instead of throwing them out they broil and try to sell for its last day. That chicken never tastes fresh, I stopped buying it. I noticed cooked legs that are sold separately are a bit better. Seasoning on chicken is just terrible and inside has lumps of fat; and creases are white-not cooked enough sometimes with feathers. They got illi coffee which is great. Croissants were great before, fresh crispy. I don't know what happened lately but they are smelly now, kind of vomit inducing smelly, I think butter or whatever they spread on it is just crap. Watch for the Butcher overcharging!. I asked for and received the outside Veal cutlet which was on sale for $6.99 and was charged for the $12.99 Veal Scallopini which I did not receive. When I complained over the phone , the Manager James did not care wether I came back or not. Regardless of wether it was a mistake or not by the Butcher, management doesn't seem to care about customers.. So I wouldn't shop there in the future. read more

It's the third time I have to throw away the meat bought from Coppa's. Once I asked for my money back (second time when it happened). I kept coming back at this store for the big, wonderful diversity of produce they have. I regret it now. It used to be generally expensive, but the quality was making it worthwhile. Now it's outrageously expensive, no quality can excuse this. And the meat is horrible. I bought some pork and it was smelling bad. Like frozen and defrost multiple times (our freezer broke down once, so I know the smell). Also, like going bad. I thought I would throw up. No wonder I was the only one at the meat counter. It used to be I had to take a number and wait, and wait for my turn - so many people were waiting in line to buy meat. Back then, the meat was fresh and good and the line-up was proving it. Always the freshest food and the best customer service. Produce department is probably the biggest you'll find anywhere with a huge variety. Butchers are mostly very friendly and they have a large selection. The reason they get 4 stars is because they bag all of your groceries and then charge 5 cents per shopping bag on the receipt. I already pay a premium to shop here that is worked into the prices but I find this to be a cheap move on their part, to literally nickel and dime me for some bags. There is no law anymore that says they need to. Customer service is also a priority here. I have had some minor issues that were always quickly resolved. Extremely expensive and not worth the money. Most of the baked goods are cheap commercial re-sales, not at all store-made. The deli counter sometimes has good deals on cold-cuts, but be prepared to wait forever in a lineup. I waited 10 minutes at the deli counter and barely moved before giving up. Coppa's is very nice, great selection and clean. However, they don't price match even when it's up against their competitor Highland Farms. Highland Farms had Montellier carbonated water on sale 6 for $5.00 so naturally we thought Coppa's would match it. They told me they don't price match, never did and never will. They were rude. I call Coppa's head office, customer service. They answered the phone speaking Italian, which I have no problem with but found it unprofessional. Told the woman what happened and she told me she was sorry and that's all. I told her that she gave me no good reason to go back to Coppa's. So, now it's Highland Farms for me, even though it's less convenient. They didn't have to be rude and they should price match, everyone else does. read more

It is a great pity that the best store in all of Toronto providing fresh and high quality produce allows customers to sample cherries, carry the pits around in their mouths and then deposit the pits into other food bins. Today, I caught a man put a cherry pit into a bin of apples. He said to me, "Be quiet." This is the city of SARS. We should have a higher standard of hygiene.
