If you need an extremely specialized grocery item that you cannot find in the major chains of grocery stores, this is probably the place to find it! Also very nice greeting cards and specialty foods, particularly during the Christmas holidays, and fun to shop at just after Boxing Day. Very pleasant shopping experience, no one attempts to help you unless you ask for it when you need it, plenty of stock, very professional, pleasant cashiers. I love throwing parties, but cooking is not my forte. Luckily, McEwen Gourmet Grocery Store always comes to the rescue. There's a cafe at the entrance of the store so you can pick up a cup of java as you peruse the rest of the store. The pastry area is great ... maybe not great if you're on a diet. You can find a variety of brownies to cupcakes to pies to danishes. There's a lot of pre-made dishes that you can purchase as well. Basically it's like a Metro, but 10 times classier. McEwan's is an upscale grocery store opened by mark McEwan. Its located at the back (or what I call the back ) of shops of don mills. If you read about a fancy product used in a recipe, odds are its here. If you have a lot of money you can come buy bottles of olive oil or balsamic vinegar for a hundred plus dollars. I am one hundred percent certain they taste like the nectar of the gods, and if you happen to buy one, I'm more than willing to help you try it out (I am nice like that ). There is a large seating area when you first walk in that is full of lovely looking and tasting prepared food, sandwiches, salads, etc. Note: It can be slightly pricey, but everything is made with very high quality products so you get what you pay for! One thing, you absolutely need to check out the treat area. There are beautiful fresh made breads and pastries, and delicious cakes and cookies. Each more delicious than the next. As you can see, I love my sweet things!! (Also available to help you polish off any leftover donuts or macaroons you might buy!) If you want, you can grab fruit or vegetables from the produce section. Everything is always fresh. They also have a flower section with the most beautiful blooms, they also make custom arrangements! Check it out if you are in the neighbourhood! They don't have valet but there is dedicated parking in the parking garage. No worries about finding parking! read more

It never happens because I feel like an idiot just for considering...the rip-offs seem overly obvious when products I can buy down the street at Sunny Food market are marked up nearly 300% here. The Shops at Don Mills is a great reno. It is like the small town-outdoor-east end version of Yorkdale. A little bit of everything at the medium to high end price points. I was quite excited to hear that McEwan had opened. I went early in the am when it first opened to make sure I could properly browse without the crowds. The store itself is not that big, but most "gourmet" grocery stores are not. The layout is great, nice and spread out. The prepared foods are at the front of the store, with the packaged products just before the cash. The customer service is fantastic. Everyone I interacted with was extremely helpful, down to earth and not pushy. Is McEwan going to be a regular grocery store of choice for me? No. But, here are the circumstances I think it will be useful for most consumers that can only afford occasional visits: - treats for yourself (like the Belgian chocolate I picked up. Was hard not to press my nose against the glass of the chocolate truffle display) - special dinners/dates (great premade north 44 approved food...saw some mouth watering meats, salads and desserts. Not cheap, $7/8 for fresh hummus) - gifts (saw butter tarts that I know my dad would love. Am interested to see what they will do come Christmas time) - speciality items (when your recipe calls for some Mexican spices...they have a whole section....you will be covered) I really liked McEwan. Am looking forward to trying the sliced turkey and speciality rice I got!! My partner picked up a couple pizzas from here on her way home from work. They were overpriced, but the main problem is that the olives were mostly un-pitted! I hurt myself on the first one, then found four more! That's just ridiculous. They were bread-y and not terribly good otherwise, as well. read more

I had high hopes for this store when it opened up a few years ago but alas the search for a perfect grocery store continues. Hmm things have changed much since my last visit. The high point for this store is the meat section followed by the cheese selection. The prepared food and produce section continues to be average at best while the packaged goods is not even worth visiting. This was an impromptu visit as I tagged along with a friend's family. The place wasn't busy even though it was a weekend and I don't know how long will it last if the weekend represents the traffic flow here. Some things to look for are tea selection (Kusmi selection is quite good) , foie gras items and the great cuts of steaks. Understandingly things are priced on the higher side as this is a premium grocery store but will I go out of my way to visit this over other alternates hmm I highly doubt it. read more

I'm poor and this place makes me feel even poorer. I was hosting a family event and decided on steak, so I wanted to get really great quality cuts. I picked up a a bunch of dry-aged bone-in new york strips. Let me tell you, these were the best cuts of meat I've ever had. They were expensive, but less expensive than Whole foods, or even the butcher. The quality at McEwan is top notch, but very expensive. Their flowers and that crap are nice. I don't know a dandelion from an orchid, but my mom has really appreciated the flowers I've bought her from here (at least I think she liked them) read more

I have loved cool Grocery Stores all the way back to my first trip to Zabars, Fairway Market and Dean & Deluca in NYC in the early 90's. I was anxious to see Mark McEwans new food store last year and stopped in again this trip to see how they have progressed since last years opening. Don Mills has not been a good experience for many retailers but McEwans seemed reasonably busy. Overall the merchandising is great. The fish and meat departments were amazing with a good selection of pre-marinated take home vacu-sealed fish and meats. Not sure why more gourmet stores don't do that. Best way to cook fish. Really liked the canning products. Simple and great presentation. Store shelves are well marked and the layout was easy to navigate around with good customer interaction. Staff were friendly, knowledgable and very helpful. The cappuccino bar was using an automatic espresso machine which was disappointing. I know it avoids straff training issues but it is impossible to control the milk temperature and I hate 180 degree milk in my cappuccino. The cappuccino was a 6 out of 10 and it should be at least an 8 out of 10 for this type of demographic and store. Overall great store and wish I lived close by. Very similar to Meinhardts in Vancouver, which I also love, but Meinhardts has better cappuccinos. read more

I've had the best USDA Prime Rib (North 44 quality) steaks here and they were incredibly good. The steaks were cooked on a BBQ, seared both sides on high heat and then cooked on medium-high for a few minutes on each side. It turned out to be the perfect steak I have ever had. I still dream of the steaks I bought here. They were no doubt superior quality in taste, freshness and flavour! I think I probably saved about half of what I would have paid, if I was at the restaurant. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for exceptionally tasty cuts of steak. read more

Wow! I love it here. This area just keeps getting better and better. I didn't even know that it finally had opened and found myself wandering in there. The place is pretty busy and have a good set up of seating to hang out. There selection of hot foods, salad bar and olive bar is amazing!! I treated myself too to their cupcakes which was fabulous and recommend it. There other bakery goods looks just as amazing! And will come back and hope my pockets don't run dry read more

This Grocery Store/Restaurant is kinda neat. It has a great finished meal area which is all refrigerated. There is some hot food as well like soup & other but not as much as the cooled area. The display looks very good. The food quality may have been there but it's diminished as the food cooled. I have the Roast Beef/Mushroom/Blue Cheese Baguette that tasted decent but as everyone knows...cooled protein has a weird taste. I'd give this an overall 3* but it would have owned a 3.5* if the food had been fresh. read more

I don't think I have ever had anything bad from here. About a month ago, I posted a very negative review letting Torontonians know about the gift basket of food items we received earlier this year. Hmm, I guess McEwan managed to get it deleted. Well... I'll try again. This is a condensed version of the former review: * Pizza - tasteless, crust like cardboard * Prime Rib pie - lacking in flavour, got a mouthful of nutmeg * Salmon dinner - greasy & tasteless * Pasta sauce - commercial tasting, too sweet, a jar of Prego from No Frills tastes better * Veal Meatballs - tasted terrible I will give them one compliment, the delivery was excellent, rec'd texts while they were on the way and they showed up exactly on time. We were so excited when the box arrived and little did we know that the food would be so disappointing. I'm sure our dear friends must have spent more than $250 - 300 sending this food care package, it's really too bad. No Quality control. Let's see how long this review stays alive on Yelp. Hold on, I do have GOOD NEWS! and a recommendation for a fantastic catering place. A few weeks ago we ordered a gift food basket for my grandparents for their 65th Anniversary from Elle Cuisine. I really enjoyed going to McEwan Gourmet Store. The place was immaculate. Things were organized very well, and everything was very clean. The variety of foods both packaged and prepared was exceptional, and I could tell when I walked in that a lot of though went in to setting up the store and choosing the best of products. They have a lot of regular items, but they also have a great variety of ethnic, gluten free and other specialty foods. The display cases show their fresh foods in a way that makes it hard not to want to buy everything, and the selection of treats was good as well. Highly recommended and a very nice trip. I placed an online order at 11am expecting same day delivery...the order did not arrive as promised and the order included my dinner menu...After follow up next morning and with great apology, my order was delivered with priority...so Thxs for that...However, ...the prepared foods I ordered had an expiry date of next day...impossible for me to consume everything by expiry date...Tonight I tried the lasagna...it was so salty as to be inedible...I pitched it... At this point I am very disappointed...I have been a supporter and patron of Mark in all of his endeavours...North 44 my all time fav...his early venture into catering...gave him some good business in the early days...and then grocery...I love the Don Mills store.... But along the way quality control seems to have been sacrificed...When paying a premium for resto quality food it's shameful to have to throw it out...Hopefully this feedback is helpful and someone is actually tasting what is cooking in the kitchen... read more

I've been to McEwan probably a hundred times The location is right across from my office and I was coming by almost everyday for either breakfast or lunch or to get a nice treat (every Friday I'd come by to pick up a pie or a cake or some yummy dessert for dinner) Well after today, I won't go in there anymore I've had way too many terrible service experiences there and I keep coming back but today was the last nail in the coffin I guess I'm crazy to think that a "gourmet" grocery store would have top service but if I'm paying $10 for a small salad or $14 for 6 mini cupcakes, I guess I expect a higher level of service than No Frills I could list out each terrible experience I've had here but I won't go into detail on each of them ... Today - I came in to exchange cookies that I purchased - they were hard, didn't taste like advertised, I had purchased them 1 day earlier and had tried just 1... even my coworker thought they really just didn't taste right. Having bought that company's cookies before, I thought they must be expired or something is wrong with them. When I brought them to an employee she told me unless it was expired (turns out the expiry date is a few months away), they wouldn't do anything. "We don't exchange something just because you don't like it" I would expect that for a lot of things .. and I'll tell you I've bought a few things there I didn't like but I never brought back because I realised it was a preference thing. These cookies were just awful and didn't seem right. For a store like McEwan to not exchange $7 cookies just shows how poor their service is - so they writ off $7 or contact the baking company... It's minimal effort and cost to lose a customer that comes there regularly. I've also had potato salad with hard potatoes and was told that "the potatoes are meant to be crunchy" .... I can cook and I don't think boiled potatoes are meant to be crunchy (is chicken supposed to be a little slimy in the middle too?) I was also told their Cesar dressing which was about 50% anchovy and the other 50% vinegar was meant to taste like that and I "must've never had real Cesar dressing" Their staff also doesn't know what products they have - I've asked for dairy free products and was pointed to 1 tray of cupcakes... When I looked through the products myself I found cookies, biscotti and a few other things that all had no dairy.. Thanks totally-unhelpful-McEwan-employee! It's unfortunate because I liked a few of the brands they sold. At least Pusateri's is just across my condo! read more

I think it is well established that the pricing here can be pretty ridiculous. To buy cereal or other basics here would be a bad call but for prepared food I think the quality is great and the value not completely off base. Love picking up the spicy salmon roll for when I need a break from the work cafeteria or bringing home amazing.green beans and short rib pie.... yum! Terrible experience including extremely poor customer service by the general manager George and Mark McEwan's office not even acknowledging my complaint. This is a place where the costs are extremely high. Typically I pay $250 on a visit. I do buy some food to freeze and the rest to treat myself for a few days. To sum this experience, I preordered and they gave me the right packaging with the wrong food inside. They also gave me food expiring the next day even though they had fresher goods. Luckily, I had them open the package they conveniently closed up and saw what they tried to pull. They did that to me in the past so I knew how sneaky they are. Unfortunately the switched items I couldn't tell until I was home and about to eat them. They never explained how the 2 items were in the wrong wrappers. Without going into detail, it ruined my meals since this was part of what makes a special meal for me from them. They eventually offered me 10% off my next visit. I last came 8 months ago since they are so overpriced so I wanted something applied to THIS order. George pretended he would do that but didn't keep his word. They didn't reimburse for the switched food or make up for the meals ruined. They said they will be sending a $25 gift card for next time, which didn't make up for my losses. George has not responded to any e-mails since. Basically they don't care about their customers. Go elsewhere is my advice. read more

I want to commend McEwan's seafood personnel, in particular, Tony, for his absolutely amazing service. Tony goes above and beyond in providing superior service to me ALL the time. I can call the counter (X245) to check when fresh fish, oysters are coming in, and/or he will let me know when a new order is coming in so I am guaranteed the freshest possible. Everything we get from him is superior to any grocery store and he typically has it packaged and ready for pick up when I get there. Can't beat this quality and service! read more

The condos around Shops on Don Mills are so lucky to have McEwan's to shop at - this place really caters to condo living: Really yummy prepared foods, nice cuts of meat and fresh fish, and gourmet selections of oils and bites for entertaining. I really like buying the various varieties of cheeses, oil and vinegar's, meats and fish. The sweets here are really yummy as well. It's expensive, no doubt, and you can probably buy the same tomato and cucumber for less at the Metro in the same plaza. But I think this place caters to the immediate condo dwellers that don't mind buying high quality items for 1 or 2 people. Buying for a big family at McEwans just doesn't make economic sense. Highly recommend, for well-deserved splurgy items such as steak and fish. As high-end grocery stores go, I BY-FAR prefer McEwan's to Pusateri's. read more

Super expensive + Super selection = Super amazing, This place is like a toy store for foodies. I once went in there to get food for a Friday night date for two, and ended up spending close to $150. And while I would have normally felt extremely guilty for that purchase, the quality of it prevented me from doing so. And while McEwan is certainly trying to capitalize upon the "too lazy to cook" crowd by having an extensive selection of prepared foods, if you're looking for great produce and hard-to-find ingredients, you're certainly going to find it here. I'd say that overall, this is the kind of place that you should definitely indulge in every once and a while, but leave your milk/cereal/eggs purchasing for your neighbourhood Loblaws. read more

One of the best gourmet markets I have been to! A word of caution, don't go here hungry or you could get really carried away, especially if you are a big foodie. They have almost everything you could think of (check out their impressive oil and vinegar aisle, including their bottle of 100 year aged balsamic). Their desserts look too good to eat. This is THE place to go to if you are planning a dinner party (great meats, seafood and cheeses), gifts for your foodie friends, or too tired to cook or go out (their take away dishes all look really good).
