Right when we arrived, a band called Night Hog start to perform. They were really good! They played on the first floor stage, and we sat at the seating right across from them. There was a dance floor in between us, but no one was dancing. We sat here for quite some time while we waited to bowl, so we kept going to the other side of the first floor to get drinks from the bar. Bar service was great! I never waited for a drink, and the bartenders gave good recommendations. Typical bar with plenty of cocktails and beers. When it was our turn to bowl, we went up to the 5th floor and got our lane. It is $25 an hour per lane, which I think is an amazing deal. At the lane, there are places to sit, tvs, tons of bowling balls and four total lanes. For bowling you were able to choose different games after you finished your round. I really like how they didn't make you change your shoes.. you could bowl in heels if you wanted. Show rental is free! This was an old warehouse converters into an event venue... just so cool. I love that each floor is different and there are bars in every floor, so you don't have to go back down to the first to keep getting drinks. Such a fun time!

Independence park is located where the old airport was located and the indoor courts were constructed in the hangar area and as such there is a low ceiling for those who like to lib the ball. The indoor tennis courts were recently redone and as such are in the best shape it's ever been. The outdoor courts are lined up two within a fence with one set of 3. Each of the tennis courts have benches for the players. There is no water. Also, for the spectator, there are benches near each court which makes it pleasant and somewhat easy to view. In addition to the tennis courts, in this area are meeting rooms which the public may use.

The courts were resurfaced, I guess, mid-last year. While a vast improvement from their previous state, the base of the courts is still in pretty lousy shape. There are quite a few spots where there are cracks or divots that could easily change the trajectory of the ball...unless it's me hitting it, which would result in the ball burying itself in the ground until friction of the surrounding pavement and consequential hole gravel eventually bring the ball to a stop somewhere near the earth's core. (um, that was a joke, I'm really a humble guy...I mean, some of my best friends are me) There are a lot of courts and they have a croquet field and shuffleboard, but the court conditions are really not perfect. One set of courts seems to be on a slope, so you're either serving uphill or downhill. Barely noticeable...but noticeable. It's close to my house, so I'll keep coming.

But the best thing about this park, I've learned recently is how safe I feel here. I walk for exercise and I always see officers riding thru the park. At least one or two an hour. I walk at the crack of dawn and sometimes at dusk, and there's still someone riding thru. The park is well kept and huge.

However - the skates are never sharpened, the staff give out the wrong sizes of skates (they always give out skates that are too big - skate sizes are different from street shoe sizes). The concrete is only padded in some areas, so kids are walking on concrete with their skates (dangerous and further dulls the blades). It's expensive for such a short time on the ice. Dull skates are dangerous. If you find skating slippery and scary, it's probably the skates. River Center needs to sharpen their skates!! Pro-tip: parents, put your kids in helmets. Please please please put your child in helmets. Bonus points for other protective gear. Everyone should wear knee pads imo - get a skateboarding protective package (knees, elbows, wrists), and you'll find ice skating is soooooo much more fun.
