Read the great reviews, so 4 of us had lunch there today. Ordered unsweet tea with lemon. She brings my tea, I add a pack of Splenda and it's so sweet I about choked. It was sweet tea. Ordered a hamburger steak, cooked medium, emphasized hot pink in the center, with corn on the cob and french fries. Food comes out, the hamburger steak was very well done. Instead of taking my plate away, she scooped the hamburger steak onto a saucer because she had to prove to the cook that it's burnt. I wait 10 to 15 minutes for the replacement, and that's all that comes out. Corn is cold, fries are cold. I mention that to her, no response. The corn was sitting in a small dish of butter. No way to eat it, except picking it up with my bare hands, butter running down my hands. Plenty of seating available, they stuck us in a cubby that felt like we were in sardine can. Had to take my wife's bag back out to the vehicle because there was nowhere to put it. So much for the ambience. Been there, done that, never again. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because my wife did enjoy the lobster and crab bisque. read more

Went for dinner last night. I was quickly seated. And shortly ordered an unsweetened iced tea. Unfortunately, they no longer have Gyros on the menu, so I needed a little time to decide. When the waitress checked back I opted for their hand pressed burger that comes with lettuce and tomato and a pickle spear on the side, plus a side of your choice. I added cheese to the burger for a $1 up charge and chose fries for my side item. I was pleasantly surprised this time that the ambiance was not so loud that people would have to yell to talk with one another, it was at a normal restaurant range with the occasional loud laugh or child, but pleasant. My food came within a reasonable time and tasted really good. The waitress checked on me several times and provided refills and the check promptly. For all the above I would have to recommend. However, the cost was $16 and change for cash or $17 with a card (not including a tip). I know that prices are higher on everything, but this is a little much for what I had. And if I had know ahead of time they didn't have Gyros anymore I would have gone somewhere else with as good if not better burgers for a better price. read more

We met some friends here for lunch around 11:15. We were seated right away. I ordered the tater tot appetizer and my husband ordered the Copper Penny burger. Both dishes had great flavor. One of the best places to eat in town. Our waitress both times was great. I'd recommend asking them for their suggestions as they are the pros and can guide you in picky a tasty meal. This place is located downtown Forest City, NC and even though we arrived after lunch it was still very busy. I had The Rachel which has coleslaw on it and I was not sure how it was going to taste but surprisingly it was delicious! I found the sweet potato fries not quite crispy enough but they were good and are served with a sweet sauce. The ladies restroom was clean. Our waitress was wonderful and we were here pretty late in the evening. We were seated right away. We ordered the fried mushrooms for our appetizer and they were the highlight of the meal. In fact I plan to return for these and a beer sometime soon. I ordered the rib-eye panini and my boyfriend got a burger. Both entrees were good with reasonable portions. I was thankful to find a spot open later than most spots nearby. My side salad had tomatoes on it that were not good... and I love tomatoes. There were so many it ruined the salad for me. The copper penny in Forest City unfortunately has been a hit or miss for us. I have gotten salad with brown lettuce and brisket. Tacos with more lettuce than brisket. My husband normally gets salmon, which is always good. A few weeks ago I bought a salad for 8 to 12 people that had plenty of fresh lettuce piled on top of brown lettuce. I was in the area spending time with family, ordered the Brisket Sandwich for myself - it was decent, was not disappointed. My father got a bowl of chili - he stated it was very good. Wife ordered the cherry wood salmon, and was pleased with the salmon as well; she said it was good enough to order again. We decided to treat ourselves to a night out in this beautiful small town. As new residents we've heard so much about the Cooper Penny. The wait was a little long but it was worth it. It's a Friday night so the mix of patrons were from all ages. The drinks were delicious, the food was tasty and the service was amazing (Rachel was killing it even though it was a packed house) and the local decor was cute. This spot was a great choice and the trio appetizer (onion peddles, mozzarella steak and spinach dip). The 6oz sirloin was prepared well, the chicken broccoli was excellent, blackened chicken wrap was great and the foothills chicken was also tasty. All in all the food and atmosphere was excellent. Great restaurant in the cutest downtown! There are copper pennies embedded throughout the restaurant: on the floor, the walls, in the bathroom...fun! Our food was delicious and this seems to be a super popular place. Lots of locals were bellied up to the bar when we visited at 3 pm, which seems to be a happy hangout! Service is outstanding. We ordered the foothills fritters and if you don't, you missed the best appetizer in the mountains. Damn good. We added Texas Pete to add that extra and it was well worth it. Great home town feel where even if they don't know you, they make you feel like they do. The tatornachos were great. I ordered the Copper Burger and it was excellent, accompanied by a huge side salad that was very fresh. Our first time in Forest City and I was very fresh impressed. Courtney was a great server, she was friendly, helpful and popped in many times to see if we needed anything. There are not a lot of really good food options in Forest City. This place had high Yelp rating so I decided to check it out. It's right downtown and the first issue is parking. The copper penny is a welcome addition to the Rutherfordton food scene. It's spacious and has a funky atmosphere. There's an outdoor patio, two bars with bar seating, and numerous dining rooms. They have a large menu and we ordered cheese sticks, a chefs salad, and a few other items that I can't recall but everyone was happy with their food. They have a lot of side options including side salad or steamed veggies which is nice vs just fries (but they have those too). Service is prompt and very friendly. I went to Copper Penny once being here local it's always busy so I wanted to see what it was all about. I ordered a hamburger plate and I thought the prices were a bit high for a hamburger. When it came out it looked big but the bun was big, I am not big on a lot of bread when eating hamburgers. But it did have a good taste to it. The atmosphere was nice seemed like there were a lot of repeat customers who knew the waitresses. There are just a few choices in town to eat at. I wouldn't say it was my favorite place to eat but I would stop back sometime and try something else maybe. read more

Not Great - I ordered the Parmesan encrusted chicken and it was pathetic. It was a very thin, small frozen chicken filet patty with a slice of cheese melted on top. It was dry as a bone - not at all tasty or appealing, perhaps laughable. The side of broccoli was very good and the baked potato under cooked. My husband ordered a chicken wrap which was okay but the ear of corn was also bad. It was actually dried out and the kernels had withered like rasins. A butter sauce was on top which almost disguised the appearance until he tried to eat it and got a closer look. I think the worst however was my sons meal of the mini cheeseburger sliders. They were BONE dry with no flavor. We came at 4:10 on a Tuesday evening and the food seemed to have left over from lunch. Nothing was freshly prepared. We will not be back. read more
