As someone who doesn't eat steak, chicken, or pork, I guess you can take this review with a grain of salt. I attended a business dinner at Coppermill and we were seated in the private dining room in the back of the restaurant. The draft beer selection was decent with a lot of local options on tap. A couple of people in our party ordered old fashioneds, which were red in color. Those people said they didn't taste right, so maybe avoid those drinks. For appetizers, we ordered shrimp cocktail, fried calamari, spinach & artichoke dip, and lobster mushrooms. They were all pretty standard, except I did not taste any lobster in the mushrooms. Everyone who ordered a Caesar salad received it full of brown lettuce. For my entrée, I ordered the salmon, which came with whipped potatoes and roasted carrots. The salmon was very dry and was a really small piece. The carrots tasted like nothing but cinnamon, and were also dry. The whipped potatoes were the saving grace, but they were salty. We stopped for the night in Kearney on the way to Denver and I was in the mood for a good steak. We used Yelp and found this restaurant which happened to be close to our hotel (In fact it is surrounded by quite a few hotels). My wife chose the Mahi-mahi special and I chose the Prime Rib. We both loved our meals. My prime rib came out to the table cooked exactly as ordered. The accompaniments for both meals were superb. Yikes! I am being generous with two stars because our waiter was great, the beer was cold, and the bread was fresh (even though it came out after we were done eating). So... avoid the Lobster Mushrooms (flavorless) (unless you like the taste of raw mushrooms), the Crab Cakes tasted like "balls of salty hot vomit" (direct quote from my husband), Prime Rib was cooked well but beyond bland. Good thing we ordered the "Red Wine Brown Gravy" that was coagulated and chunky but had the redeeming quality of having more flavor than anything on the plate. Loaded Mashed potatoes were fine. It's been 11 months since I reviewed the Coppermill Steakhouse. Luck had us traveling back through Nebraska along I-80 and since we had such a good experience here the last time, we tempted fate and tried it again. WIN!!!!! Everything we liked about the Coppermill Steakhouse is still here, a year later. We were so lucky to have "Samantha" as our wait person and she helped me select local (Nebraska) brews. My wife had the Riesling and was glad she did. You will not be disappointed with the apps (lobster stuffed mushrooms) and we opted for the salads again (salmon for my wife, steak for me). All in all, we left satiated with a wonderful feeling of fullness and were so happy we pulled in off the interstate to sample this place again. Hands down this is one of the best places in Kearney. One of my biggest issues with dining out in Kearney is the cocktails....and this is my solution. Definitely won't go anywhere else but here for cocktails going forward. While some may feel that the prices are a little high, I would say you get a good value and the experience is far better than most other places. I can't tell you how many places I visited that had no idea how to make a martini...that's not rocket science and is something I would expect any bartender to make and every other restaurant was a bomb. We sat the bar and it was such a fabulous experience that I was sad I hadn't tried this sooner. My husband had the smoked old fashion and I had the lemon basil martini...both were fabulous. We waited for 10 minutes for a server to come by. Then another table sat down across the room from us and immediately got water and service. Mind you, this waitress was not busy. She passed by us several times and didn't even say hello. The only thing that differentiated the other table from us was race. They were white males and we were not. I'm mixed with Asian and my husband is black. I guess this waitress thought we weren't worth her time. I just want to say that this is disgusting service. We have seen the Coppermill Steakhouse several times while staying in Kearney, but just recently visited it for dinner. I can tell you we will likely go there every time we're in Kearney in the future. The space is welcoming and casually upscale. Elizabeth, our server was amazing; she greeted us with a smile and was so friendly and helpful throughout the meal. The wine list is robust, with superb, yet reasonably priced, wines on it, including Pinot Noir from Oregon (which is what Oregon wine country is known for). Everything on the menu looked great. We shared a bottle of Pike Road Pinot Noir and we each had salads and steak. The portion was generous, each was cooked to perfection (my husband's medium rare and my medium+) and the flavor was absolutely great, with wonderful sides as well. My wife and I were really looking forward to the prime rib and snow crab special, what a disappointment! The crab legs were cold and difficult to crack, but the worst was the prime rib, it was absolutely disgusting. Now make no mistake I do like my prime rib rare but this was absolutely raw. It was so "rare" that I actually think I saw my prime rib grazing on the veggies on my plate. Also noted that there was no seasoning on it, just a large chunk of unseasoned raw meat. We looked on-line for a nice meetup spot for family around the area and ended up at the Coppermill. It's in the area a little north of the the main drag and first light off the freeway. Some wise developer bought the land in the area, they built a convention center, about half a dozen motels popped up, a couple of restaurants and away we go! A brand new place obviously, with high ceilings and a semi-partition between the dining room and bar. It's a nice and comfortable room. Our evening got off to a slow start as they were out of our chosen adult beverage (what bar runs out of Jack Daniel's?). Our server was obviously new and lacked experience. She was nervous but did ok. This is a gripe I had with Cunningham's new bar across the parking lot. Build an upscale restaurant and staff it with college kids? Maybe that's all that's available. At least train them. It's a steakhouse so steaks dominate the menu. There are some salads and a variety of sandwiches. Nothing much under $15 or so. I asked the waitress if I should have one of the sandwiches or the hamburger. She said "well they just redid the hamburger and it's supposed to be pretty good now". Not a ringing endorsement but the hamburger was very good. For a $15 hamburger anyway. My wife had a salad and said it was good, but not much more. We had a few rounds of drinks, a salad and hamburger and our tab was around $80. Leave a fair tip and you're looking at a $100 meal. Based on the service and the apparent general management of the place (or lack of it) it's overpriced and I have a hard time recommending it. They do have a hamburger place next door if you want to notch it down a bit, or try some of the other fine restaurants in Kearney. read more

Coppermill Steakhouse sits in a small strip mall next to a group of hotels in Kearney along Interstate 80. We stopped here for the night as part of a major life move from the Upper Midwest to the Southwest. We happened upon this establishment because they have a lobster roll and I'm on a mission to try more than 500 individual lobster rolls around the country and world. However, this review is about all that we experienced at Coppermill and not just the lobster roll. Overall, this is a very stylish, well-run restaurant with a good selection of menu items. Between the two of us, we sampled the crab mushrooms, shrimp cocktail, salmon with pasta, and lobster roll with truffle fries. We also enjoyed one of their white wine selections, although the specific brand we chose escapes me. The food is quite good! The salmon with pasta included a lemon herb cream sauce and we both really liked this dish. The crab mushrooms were addictive and had a really good crab flavor, which was appreciated. The shrimp cocktail, while a typical dish, was very good and well-presented. My lobster roll was pretty good as the lobster filling had a wonderfully fresh light flavor and texture to it, even though the brioche bun was chewy, thick, and the bun-to-lobster ratio was too high. Serving sizes were generous. Also, the service was prompt and very good. Considering this is in Kearney, Nebraska, Coppermill is an excellent find and we enjoyed our visit very much. Ambiance is very nice - a little less formal than expected from the entrance, but still quite enjoyable to be here. We started with the crab-stuffed mushrooms, which were fine but not stand-out. For entrees, I ordered the 30-day dry aged ribeye (14oz I believe), wife ordered the 6oz filet wrapped in bacon. Both were fantastic; the filet was one of the best steaks we've had.
