I went here on Saturday night on my way to Big Lake. It's very fitting with the name as it sits right on the Main Street in Monticello. There is a parking lot that you can park in which is really nice. You walk in and seat yourself. We had a very nice waitress. I was disappointed first that they were out of all the specials and second that there really weren't many vegetarian options on the menu. Really only 3 items, a grilled cheese, veggie sandwich and a salad. I asked them to make me a veggie wrap instead of a sandwich which they did and was nice but veggies don't really fill you up and it needed tofu or tempeh or something. It was just okay and our sweet potato fries were overdone. My friend got the chicken wrap and also said it was okay and thought the same about the fries. They have a few board games you can play while you wait but most of the pieces were missing. Also the dessert case looked okay.. some items looked good. It has a lot of potential I just think it needs some updating both to the restaurant and the menu.

My husband and I have eaten here twice (since covid hit) with friends and each time we have really enjoyed the delicious food! My husband LOVES the Hot Beef Sandwich so it's not hard to talk him into going here. We like sharing the Onion Rings while we wait for our scrumptious meals. And the desserts are out of this world!! I even bought a painting of a "pickup with Christmas tree in the box" painted by the owner's wife! We will be back!!

Sirloin Steak Skillet with Hollandaise? sauce ....where's the skillet?

I really was looking forward to trying this small cafe, some friends said they really liked it! Our waitress was great, first off! Nice ambiance also. We had two pre-schoolers with us so perused the kids menu. I thought $5.99 for a pancake and sausage was pretty hefty so decided on the $10 for 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 3 sausages for them to split, at least they'd also get an egg each! The pancakes were huge and the syrup had a little something extra that made it very tasty. I thought that was a fairly high price fir this simple breakfast compared to other places, but it was satisfying! For me and my daughter, first off, I don't love breakfast, but found out their lunch menu starts at noon on Saturdays, so that was an epic fail for me since we were there st 11:15. I opted for the gyro omelet as that was the least breakfasty option I thought, but it really had very minimal gyro meat in it so it was very eggy. The thick cut rye toast was the highlight of my $13 meal! My daughter went for the sirloin steak skillet ($15), not sure why this was a skillet as it basically was deep fried wedge potatoes with a bit of sirloin, mushrooms etc with two eggs on top, on a plate?? I also tried her hollandaise sauce because it was an odd color....I follow the Betty Crocker recipe and it is creamy and bold yellow and lemony, this was kinda like a thinned chicken? gravy? All in all, felt it was overpriced for non-spectacular food. It pains me to give a poor review during this Covid life small businesses are dealing with....there's not a lot of options in Monticello so I can't say I won't try it again later in the day in the future, but based on this one experience, I won't go rushing back.

Hash browns should be fried in butter, not drenched in oil, and well, be a nice toasty brown on the outside and moist inside. Not a slimy pale mess.

Always have to get homemade soups and pies. Had the chicken wild rice and chili. Neither would be ones I'd order again. The chicken wild rice was milky and barely had any chicken. Could only find 2 pieces. The chili tasted too much like tomato paste and sauce. Both were disappointing. The staff wasn't very attentive or friendly or professional. Not sure why this was the case I'd they're a catering business. Had the burger with an egg on it. It was ok. But charred too much on the bottom. The rosemary parmesan fries were too heavily coated in parm and rosemary. It was too over powering. I wouldn't order this again. What I would order is an amazing pie there. It was a rich chocolate one that had layers. It tasted like a hot cocoa if you had a fork full of all the layers. The carrot cake was also really good. The desserts were the winners and the reason for the 3 stars. Everything else would have been a 2 rating. Found a new stop for pie now for sure.

My boyfriend and I stopped by here last weekend for breakfast after we saw the line at Perkins. Thank God we did! This was hands down the best breakfast food I've ever had. The pancakes tasted like fluffy sugar cookies the waitresses were super friendly and welcoming and even brought us a sample of their wild rice soup to try (it is also extremely delicious). The place is a quaint little cafe with amazing coffee too. This will be our new favorite spot for breakfast I'm sure! read more

I was out this way for the launch of a new book store in Elk River. I stopped here for lunch about 1:00. Gayle was my excellent server. I love the menu and after much debating, settled on the asiago mac and cheese, awesome. It comes with soup or salad. A nice oval bowl full of greens and very thinly sliced carrots, that really bring out the flavor. The blue cheese is homemade, too. It reminds me of Keys Cafe with all the decadent desserts. I got french silk pie for later on at the hotel. It's a lighter chocolate which was a nice change of pace, and a delicious crust. It was so good I went back for breakfast the next day. They only have 1 waitress until 8:30, on a Saturday, not smart. A couple of bummers, the coffee is weak, and the toast was slightly burnt. My husband loves toast this way. I will give them this, it was perfectly buttered, which most places have to have a meeting on. I got a veggie skillet, very good, and I like the red peppers, it could use more cheese. The cinnamon rolls I brought home were most welcome. They slather them with icing. This would even be a great stop for either meal on the way to Fargo. It's so small town, it's hard to believe it's just under an hour from the TC. read more

We had a group of six and came on Veteran's Day. It was still packed with a big lunch crowd at 1:45 PM. They were out of the sweet potato fries but the Reuben was huge and excellent per one of our meat eaters. The vegetarians had a nice veggie sandwich choice and the soup (tomato bisque) was excellent. Two of our group members were veterans and the owner gave each of them a free slice of pie as well as a complimentary slice of turtle cake for one of us that had a birthday (we did show our ID). Shepherd's pie was very good and so was the hot turkey sandwich. I very nice place with great service. read more

Great spot! I was there on Saturday at 11. It wasn't busy, food was fast and good. The service was great from the server to the cashier. Laura, I believe her name was. I'm a sucker for a super unique and restaurant and this fits that need right on the head. I had the gyro with sweet potato fries...one of the best decision ever! I'm new to Monticello but as everyone knows there isn't much here for food options...other then the standard fast food crap. This cafe could flourish downtown mlps but the idea I it being tucked away is pretty awesome! read more

Cute little place downtown Monticello..Simple menu with some interesting twists. Haven't seen a gyro omelet since moving away from Chicago.. It was very good.. Nice portions not too big. I love the carafe of coffee at the table.. no waiting for hot coffee. The pies and cakes looked amazing and we will be back just for those:) read more

Grilled chicken salad sandwich was great. Only issue was it had a number of large onion pieces. French fries looked good but were fairly bland. The creamy chicken wild rice is delicious. Grilled cheese was on two thick pieces of bread with a proportionate amount of cheese. Stopped through on our way to Minneapolis, would stop in again. read more

Terrible service and prices. My family and I came in and saw the tiny diner was only 1/2 full for breakfast so we thought we could get in and out quickly will some great food. It took about 10 mins to get someone to bring us coffee. As we looked around almost nobody had food and people looked quite unhappy. After seeing the extravagant prices we told the waitress if it was going to take a long time for the food we might just leave. Remarkably she said that was fine, gave us the total for our coffee and we ended up at a nearby McDonalds. We never even got to see food after 30 mins sitting in there... read more

Nothing but good things to say! I live nearby and eat here often. They have a great menu and the ingredients are always fresh and tasty and they have a liquor license too! A lot of homemade style goodness comes out of that kitchen. If its busy you might have to wait for a bit but it takes time to cook up a good meal folks so if you want fast and cheap McD's is more your style. The price meets my quality expectations. Value for value. read more

Firstly, we didn't realize they didn't serve lunch on Sundays but that was ok bec we wanted a decent place to have food but the wait was close to 30 minutes for a place that small and not busy . read more

Cornerstone Cafe is a must if you are in the Monticello area. Every meal I've had here has been phenomenal. Every feel has a home-cooked taste that I love. The venue itself is small. If you go on the weekends for breakfast specifically, you will likely have to wait a little bit for a place to sit. This is a place many locals go because it's one of the best places in Monticello to get a meal. read more

We were out for a drive on a beautiful fall day and needed a place to eat an early dinner. After an online search, we settled on the Cornerstone Cafe in Monticello, and we're so glad we did. The menu offers some interesting choices (jerk chicken, Mediterranean flat bread, gyros) that you wouldn't normally find in a small Minnesota town. We tried the jerk chicken and the chicken salad wrap, both delicious! Hubby had a glass of Murder of Cranberries stout by Lupine Brewing which was outstanding! They also bake all their sweets and although the pies and cakes looked amazing, we were too full to attempt dessert. Would definitely recommend this friendly cafe! read more

Personally would like to give a O! We decided to give the local place a try on our way up North. They told us food would take 30 minutes, softball team in town and they got slammed. We said no worries... we understand (I was in the business for 25 years.. so I know the scoop). 45 minutes passed, 1 hour passed, then at 80 minutes, WE had to go check on our food! 2 tables in the entire place were in there and were done eating and one other table outside with us.. they had already eaten! It came out 15 minutes later and the food was subpar at best! My pasta was swimming in butter! Could only eat a couple bites after I blotted the butter off. Not once did a manager come out. I asked if one was on duty? When she did come out ...10 minutes later she was rude and made excuses and tried to make us feel bad. She said , well I took your pasta off so you don't have to pay as much...? Read the room...you totally missed the point. if you could not handle the crowd, you should at least be honest with regards to wait times and cognizant of peoples time. worst dining experience ever. Manager needs to go get trained . BTW... she was the one who was standing around when we had to go in search of our food! read more

We look forward to Saturday breakfast here. Generous portions, fresh hot food, vegetarian options. They recently started offering the option of salad greens instead of hash browns. It is true, it is a very small place and like any business, may have off days. As I regular customer though, it is a good local choice. read more

I have never been unhappy with anything I have eaten here. The wild rice soup breakfast dish is unbelievably delicious! The staff is friendly and the decor very cute. Plus they have one of those dessert jewel cases... Mmmmm. Is there anything more alluring than a giant, homemade pie behind glass? read more

I've debated whether or not I should share this treasure or keep it to myself. It is simply the best place to eat in Monticello, hands down. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, you will not be dissapointed. The reubens are the best you will ever experience! ...and the sweet pototo fries with chopotle sauce? YUM! I'm salivating just thinking of them! Save room for dessert because the pie alone is worth the trip. If you are a pie snob, than you have met your match. The pie crusts are perfection. With dozens to choose from you'll want to order more than one, I promise you. The ambience is also wonderfully charming. read more

It seems like an up and coming area for Monticello and development nearby. We came right at 5 when the restaurant opens and got a seat in the high tops. NOTE! If you want to partake in the happy hour, you have to either sit at the bar or in the high top tables. We didn't know this and wanted their chicken wings on the happy hour menu so ended up switching tables. In addition to the wings, my husband ordered the corn bread app which was pretty good too! Wasn't a huge fan of the spicy butter it came with, but strange but the bread itself was good. The wings had a good seasoning and the house made ranch was really tasty! Surprised there were only wings and no drumsticks which I prefer and the wings themselves didn't have a whole ton of meat on them so I'd give it 3/5 on the apps I ordered the 12oz New York strip and at market price it was $62, came with broccolini and French fries. My husband got the turkey burger which he wasn't a huge fan of he said but he enjoyed the fries. My New York strip wasn't seasoned well - if at all to be honest but thankfully they had some leftover A1 from Mother's Day brunch where the bartender made some bloody Mary's so that helped. Can't say the food was a knockout but the service was really good. The bartender who was our server was conversational, great dude, and offered great suggestions. Host and folks were also really accommodating when we hopped around the restaurant so we could participate in the HH. All in all, great experience and nice place to try!

This place has food that's so much better than any sit down chain, and the prices are cheaper!! I try to eat here whenever I go out and I'm in Monticello. Me and my girlfriend love the atmosphere and the attitude of the staff. They're all great at their jobs, super friendly, and quick!! The food isn't overly greasy, portions aren't too big or small, and there are a lot of choices. I recommend this place to at least 3 or 4 people each week. read more

Cornerstone is my go-to restaurant in the Monticello Big Lake area. All of their food is made in house and every item on the menu is a must have. I personally love their tuna melt with Parmesan Rosemary fries. My mom always gets the hot beef sandwich. She says it reminds her of her moms cooking when she was a kid. Excellent food and atmosphere. Stopped for dinner with a friend. The owner met us at the door and was very friendly. Our waitress was excellent even though she was very busy.
