I can't say enough about my treatment at Cornerstone. From my initial evaluation from Dr. Fergus to my treatment by Dr J., Liz, and Jacob I feel great these days. I had neck and shoulder pain and the adjustments that were made by Dr. J and the exercises that Liz and Jacob taught me will go a long way to the improvement of my life. I am sorry to see other reviews where people did not get the treatment they needed but for myself this was a great experience. I was referred to Dr. J. McCrackan for scoliosis and gait problems from an injury and neuropathy from an autoimmune condition. I received 30 minute treatments once a week. During mid November 2023, Dr. McCrackan adjusted my left foot many times. That very same day he had someone from his office call me and cancel future appointments until I had a reevaluation. The reevaluation occurred two weeks later, and he told me that I "was too messed up below the knees for him to work on, that it would take a long time to rehab my foot, and that he would only work on my back moving forward." My physical therapist discovered that my left heel was displaced to the left and that there appeared to be some disjointment in the foot. I am continuing to work on rehabbing the foot in physical therapy. Dr. McCrackan had also referred me to his associate for an orthotic fitting.I was instructed to break in the orthotics according to a certain schedule. Attempting to do this with an injured foot appears to have exacerbated my injury. Dr. McCrackan had not communicated my injury to Dr. Fergus prior to my orthotic fitting. Their website states that the average cost for a 30 minute appointment is between 88 -150 dollars. A number of my charges were over $200. I was charged $50 and more for one PT exercise. Reviews were solicited early on in treatment. The responses to my complaints about my injury and about the charges seemed defensive and uncaring about both concerns. I regret having sought treatment at Cornerstone. read more

Where do I start? Dr. Fergus is my shaman, or as he requested I qualify more accurately, my evidenced-based shaman. I've struggled with chronic lower back issues since I was 21 and I started seeing him at 46. I've seen many doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists in that 25 year period and spent much time in bed or on the floor or taking muscle relaxers when my back "went out." I came to my evidence-based shaman in January after 12 months of chronic pain. I couldn't roll over in bed, it hurt to sneeze, putting on my pants was a drama. I had concluded I must just learn to live with this, after all it was a 25 year problem! He had me pain free with almost full mobility in 3 months. No joke! And I'm still feeling great 5 months later. Dr. Fergus knows his s!&t. I learned more about my body in my first assessment than I had from 25 years of seeing other professionals. His knowledge of the body and how everything is connected, literally, blows my mind! The first thing he blew my mind with... get ready... I was breathing incorrectly and diminishing my abdominal pressure which is essential to maintain in order to protect the spine. WTF??? I spent a month learning how to breathe correctly and then I spent two more months learning how to breathe and move correctly at the same time. There were lots of issues with lack of strength, etc... but breathing correctly was step one. I was taught from an early age to suck my tummy in. Little did I know that was the first step towards a life of back problems. I had to relearn basic functional movements as a life spent at a desk with minimal exercise had totally messed up what my body naturally wanted to do. My recovery phase was humbling, seriously. Learning how to breathe correctly, roll over, stand up from a chair...a little embarrassing. But who cares, it all paid off in the end! I made the decision to invest in my health to heal and now I'm making a serious investment in going to his strength building classes twice a week. I feel more educated about my body and I feel an optimism for the future that I'm forever grateful for as a year ago I was in a very different place. I am very pleased with the care and treatment I received from the team at Cornerstone Health in Evanston, IL. I had been dealing with chronic pain on my right side for over a year. It initially represented in my right hip, then migrated to my mid back by the shoulder blade, then moved to my right foot. I'd had surgery the year before and had some therapy afterward, but I just wasn't where I wanted to be. I had aches and pains all the time and could barely move. I finally had enough and decided to find help. After a quick search of chiropractors in Evanston, I discovered Cornerstone. From the first exam, Dr. Fergus was very positive that I could benefit from treatment. I was less hopeful because I'd suffered so long and felt I'd be stuck with the chronic pain, but after just two months it's a thing of the past and I'm feeling better than I have in two years! I worked with Dr. Samantha Syzska who is excellent at what she does. She is knowledgeable, professional and very personable. I also liked her holistic approach. She used a combination of techniques to address my issues and gave me exercises and tools I could use to help myself when my muscles tighten up. There's also a physical trainer on sight, Denny, who helps with exercises and teaching proper form. I really like that they were all about helping me get better, not just keeping me as a client. I can always go back if I need an adjustment, but they really gave me the tools to recover. Now that I'm pain free, I'm exercising again, riding my bike and going to the gym regularly. My 66-year-old mother was prescribed with statins (due to high blood pressure) and started having leg muscle pains. We stopped the medication yet she suffered with a new form of pain, which we thought was Piriformis Syndrome. We decided to see Dr. Sam because we didn't want her to be in any medication again. On the first visit, she talked about "white blood pressure" and it all made sense to us that my mother did not need the statins in the first place. When at home, her blood pressure is always good. And only in doctor's clinics does she feel stressed thus register high blood pressure everytime she sees a doctor! Dr. Sam treated my mother in 4 visits, explaining the big nerve and the muscles that are impacted by the exercises that she taught my mom. She not only healed her, she empowered my mother. I also appreciate that she truly listens. We could have been shunned for "reading too much in the internet", but she never did that, in fact, she walks with us in the thought process of understanding my mom's pain. read more

What an odd experience I had at this clinic. I saw Dr. Ryan Wasilewski twice a week for five weeks, and I enjoyed working with him. We had a treatment plan in place, and, with his help, I was slowly but surely feeling better. Imagine my surprise when I called to reschedule one of my appointments and was told that Dr. Ryan no longer worked at the clinic. Apparently he had always planned on leaving at the end of the year, but he and the clinic director (Dr. Fergus) opted not to inform patients of the upcoming change. I was told I would see a new doctor now--but at three times the cost, because, oh by the way, the clinic didn't take my insurance anymore either. It was abrupt and unexpected, at least for me. The office was ready to move on like it was nothing, but I was left feeling like my doctor had vanished in the middle of my treatment--no warning and no explanation. Truthfully, I liked working with Dr. Ryan, and it's clear from the other reviews here that patients like Dr. Fergus, too. But the way Dr. Ryan and Dr. Fergus handled this transition was pretty terrible. I get that people switch jobs and move on, but a little heads up or even a proper two-second goodbye would have gone a long way. I know I'll find another clinic I like, but what a frustrating way to end things. read more

I initially went to the clinic because of really bad headaches. Physical therapy was not helping. The staff at Cornerstone were fabulous. They took the time to do a much more thorough assessment and I received in physical therapy. They gave me lots of exercises to do, and I went in for some manual therapy. Super helpful! Visited with Cornerstone in November, 2022. Two appointments with two different doctors. Went in to relieve pain in hip joint area. Initial visit was mostly collecting information about my ailment with some treatment. That was $230. Had another appointment 10 days later as pain had gotten worse and I was walking with great difficulty. The second visit cost me $287.50. Both visits were out of pocket as Cornerstone was out of my network. Frankly, after the second visit I had more difficulty in walking than hen I arrived an hour earlier. Additionally, Dr. Fergus recommended that I make additional appointments AND purchase supplements through them designed to alleviate pain naturally. I have since followed up with IBJI and am now scheduled for hip replacement surgery. Neither doctor did a proper diagnosis and appeared to have no problem in running up my bill for services with explaining that each individual procedure was a separate charged item. I cannot recommend this group to anyone going forward as my experience with them was expensive, not properly diagnosed, and ultimately provided no relief. read more

I initially became a patient of Dr. Fergus in the winter of 2018. I have suffered from neck pain due to a cervical injury for many years. I have always had some level of constant pain, but during this time, I was having severe flare ups of excruciating pain that left me unable to even lift my head off the pillow. When I began working with Dr. Fergus, the first thing I noticed is that his office is clean and professional. A great first impression! The second thing that impressed me was his intake. It was very thorough and he gave me a clear direction on what treatment plan he thought would work best. My wife and I have both received much help from Cornerstone Health. Their holistic, non-invasive approach was something that appealed to and made sense to us. Dr. Fergus and his team were also great at explaining what they were doing and how their recommendations were intended to help us. We're the type of people who don't want the quick, one-size-fits-all type of treatment we've received at other clinics, and Cornerstone Health is exactly what we were looking for. MY WIFE'S EXPERIENCE She went there first because she was having pain in her pelvic floor shortly following the delivery of our twins. After an examination that was more thorough and skillful than what I had expected, DR. FERGUS deduced that the issue wasn't a pelvic floor injury, but rather a tear in the abdomen due to pregnancy that resulted in the pelvic floor overcompensating for the failing abdomen muscles. We were both impressed and relieved by how Dr. Fergus looked at the whole body as an interrelated set of parts, rather than only looking at the pelvic floor and considering what might be wrong there. He recommended a set of simple home exercises and taught my wife how to do them. She was diligent to follow through at home and it wasn't long before she began experiencing relief! With the initial issue abated, Dr. Fergus asked if we wanted to focus on closing the gap in her abdomen. He told us that the next few months would be crucial. Cornerstone would be able to help my wife sustain a workout regiment to close the gap. Otherwise it was likely that our only options would be surgery or to not close the gap. We put our trust in Dr. Fergus and his team and in the past 5 months of going to the clinic twice a week and doing exercises at home, the gap in my wife's abdomen has shrunk from 4 cm to 1.5cm! The top and bottom of the gap have already closed completely, so things are looking good. My wife is ecstatic that she won't need to undergo surgery to get her body right after a rough pregnancy. Following the first few evaluations, the main physician she worked with is DENNY, who is a certified physical therapist. She has absolutely loved working with him and often comments how his supportive demeanor has been key to her being able to continue with them for so long. MY EXPERIENCE I was impressed with the thorough evaluation and treatment plan that Dr. Fergus outlined for my wife. I wanted help regarding lingering back and leg issues I was having. Dr. Fergus asked if I would be willing to work with Dr. Andrew, who was both skilled and had great bedside manner. He provided both treatment to my affected areas and gave me instruction regarding workouts to strengthen my back. Unfortunately, he has since left the practice to return home. On a separate occasion I came back to Cornerstone regarding stomach and back pain following a bout of food poisoning. Dr. Fergus diagnosed tight areas in my intestines and proceeded to provide treatment to loosen those areas. Doing so alleviated both my stomach pain and my back (which muscles were compensating for my ailing abdomen). He also taught me simple exercises to be able to loosen my abdomen muscles myself and recommended how many times and for how long I should do them. This is the clinic I have been dreaming of. I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Fergus's bedside manner: he gave an extremely thorough exam, explained every single procedure before he performed it, and didn't try to push anything that I was uncomfortable with. If you're the kind of person who is skeptical of chiropractic, acupuncture, and other complementary therapies, his research-based approach will reassure you. If you're already comfortable with these practices (the clinic also offers physical therapy and naturopathy), he will respect your knowledge and work with you on that basis. I went in for a specific acute shoulder issue; I had immediate relief of the pain and I feel like I'm being set up for a good recovery. Dr. Fergus gave me a series of exercises to do at home to help between the follow-ups to address the root of the problem. He also gave me a call the next day to check on me, which is really nice. THEY ARE OPEN ON FRIDAYS. (I put that in caps because they are the only chiropractic/acupuncture clinic in Evanston/Rogers Park that is!) I needed to be seen immediately for my pain, and they worked me in right away. The clinic itself is comfortable, clean, and well organized, close to public transit, and the prices are reasonable. They offer student discounts. They use inclusive language and I was perfectly comfortable talking about my same-sex partner. I first visited Cornerstone Health (CH) because I had ongoing hip pain for nearly a year that I could no longer bear. I walk 3 - 4 miles everyday and enjoy heavy weight lifting 4 - 5 times/week and I could on longer do either of those activities without pain (especially squatting and deadlifting). At 26, I was not willing to stop weight lifting due to something I felt could be fixed. CH had a standard process for evaluating patients so they were quick to recognize all my areas of weakness and lack of mobility. After my initial evaluation we had a plan for 2 therapy/correctional exercise sessions per week as well as home exercise to help strengthen my problem areas. Within 1 week I noticed significant improvement in my mobility and within 4 weeks I had zero pain. Now after 5 weeks of treatment I am back to heavy squats and dead lifts with more mobility than before! Dr. Brett and Dr. Fergus were both amazing to work with and had tons of knowledge on how to fix my pain and how to make corrections in my weightlifting and sitting positions to avoid this problem in the future. I injured myself lifting weights and was able to get in to see Dr. Szyska the next day. This was my first time seeing a chiropractor and now that I've completed my recovery, I can say I am impressed with the care I got. At first I was surprised by how much of my treatment centered on training proper form and technique, but I am so grateful for it. I'm relatively fit, but our sessions really opened my eyes to how little attention I'd been giving to my back position while exercising. As a CrossFitter, I was pleasantly surprised with Dr. Szyska's depth of knowledge when it came to the variety of movements performed in CrossFit and she helped me customize many of these movements while I was recovering so I could continue to stay active without exacerbating my injury. She zeroed in on the weak points in my body position and taught me how to correct those to protect and strengthen my back in the future. Overall, I got a lot more at Cornerstone than I had expected when first going in. I recommend them to others. read more

After exhaustive research to separate the quacks from the real medical professionals, I found Cornerstone Health. As a scientist, and someone in pain, I sought care that was based on...you know...actual science (as opposed to "subluxation theory" that is the basis of most chiropractic practices). Physical therapy has been beneficial in the past but I continued to have problems and eventually decided to try something different. My experience was outstanding - all of the administrative things you would expect (appointments running on time, billing done well, etc) were problem-free. But most importantly, I've got my pain (neck and lower back) under control. And, I now have the knowledge of what to do if I have flare-ups. An important part of this practice is they way they teach you how to manage your condition on your own. I have a thorough set of exercises that I do daily (note: this is a partnership model...the doctors provide treatment and you do your part with a home program). I've had physical therapy many times and some of the exercises are the same or similar but what is unique about Dr. Ryan's approach with me was that most exercises are dynamic, meaning, they involve movement. As a result, I've been able to strengthen crucial muscles that no physical therapy exercises have ever addressed...and it turns out that weakness in those muscles was the source of my pain. Not a surprise to Dr. Ryan but big news to me. Knowing I have control over my condition by doing my part at home with exercises that go beyond what I've been given before in physical therapy is empowering and I feel hopeful about avoiding flare-ups in the future. I also know that Cornerstone will be a resource for me if I do have problems. And that gives me great peace-of-mind. read more

I had been in pain for nearly two years with lumbar spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis. I was not working and my kids were having to lift everything more than a couple of pounds for me. I was depressed and scared that my life would never be what it had been before my back injury. I had been finding some relief through meds and neuromuscular massage, but I wasn't getting stronger and I was still too scared to try any new movements. I asked my pain management doctor for a physical therapy prescription, which sat on a shelf for weeks. I finally asked my massage therapist for PT recommendations. Without hesitation she said Cornerstone. I was reluctant to go to a chiropractor, since I thought it was all cracking and scary manipulation. I anxiously went in for my first appointment and was blown away by Dr. Sam. She understood what I was going through right away and put everything in terms I could understand. I went to Dr. Fergus shortly after having my first child. Three fingers on my left hand were numb, I could barely move my right wrist because I had a cyst that appeared during my pregnancy and I had debilitating pain in my hips. Dr. Fergus took his time to build a complete picture of me as a patient--he figured out I wasn't drinking enough water, needed to make some dietary changes, showed me stretches to do at home, taught me how to properly hold my baby to reduce strain on my body and used a combination of massage, Accupuncture and exercises to rehabilitate me. Backstory: I suffered from debilitating low back pain. In October of 2018, my GP said that I needed rehab and sent me to an Athletico for general lower back pain. After a few months of physical therapy, it wasn't helping so I went to a different doctor who just gave me oral steroids and a back brace. I wasn't comfortable, for a variety of reasons, taking the steroids, so I went to another doctor and convinced him to give me an MRI. He found a herniated disc and recommended either oral steroids or steroid injections and then, ultimately, surgery. By this time it was January 2019. I decided to see a chiropractor who, after doing x-rays, said he found a plethora of other spine issues. I worked with him twice a week (without insurance) for about three months. Did a round of high dose oral CBD oil. I was no better. I couldn't, without great pain, bend over to feed my cat. Then I came to Cornerstone. By this time, it was I think around April or May. I worked with Dr. Szyska who is absolutely amazing. After only a month or so of her combined chiropractic care and physical therapy, I started training to run a 5K. Dr. Szyska not only has incredible bedside manner, but she's also extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to explain everything and always allows time for questions. She doesn't just adjust my back a few times and send me on my way after five minutes. My appointments are at least a half hour where the main focus is anatomy and body mechanics - what's going on in my body, how to move properly and strengthen my core. I'm an impatient one and I wish I were already out there running a half marathon, but Dr Szyska is also very realistic while being encouraging. The progress I've made in just the small amount of time I've worked with her has been huge (and quick, when it comes to the body being a slow healer). I can't recommend Cornerstone enough. I am not completely pain free, but I know how to manage my flare-ups when they happen and I'm well on my way. read more

I am really thankful to the Cornerstone team for the support and guidance that they have provided me in last 6 months and would highly recommend them! I have been having neck and shoulder pain since last 6-7 months and had seen multiple PT/Chiropractors who gave me generic exercises and didn't solve my problem. When I saw Dr. Fergus, he did an extensive evaluation and could identify the specific cause of my pain and built a custom plan for my recovery. Dr. Fergus and Denny worked with me constantly to help review my exercises and correct as and when needed. At this point, with his treatment I am feeling much better than before and I am continuing with the strength building classes. I highly recommend Dr. Fergus. Like Rebecca, I initially came to see him because of severe shoulder pain. Dr. Fergus was able to see me the same day I called and by the end of the appointment my pain was gone.This was on a Friday. I was scheduled to see him the following Monday. That day I woke up with a migraine and by the time I left I was relieved of that pain as well! I was truly amazed.
