We love Dr. Jeffer We already knew we loved Dr. Jeffer and all of the lovely people at Cornwallis Rd Animal Hospital. We have a blue heeler, a yorkie, and a cat that have all seen him for 3 years now. This year we unfortunately inherited two more cats after the sudden passing of a family member. Unfortunately, we had no vet records, and two 16 and 17 year old cats that were in a home without food and water alone for several days. We had an appointment pre scheduled for our cats annual visit and CRAH worked with us to move dates around to take the most needy cat (pictured) in first. She had "the worst nails [they've] ever seen" with toes that were infected from the nails growing into them. She was very skinny and was drinking so much water we knew she had some illness and were prepared for the worst. Dr. Jeffer was able to collect blood and analyze it on the spot so we could come up with a treatment plan (or end her suffering if needed). Luckily; she is in early stages of kidney disease and just needs to be fattened up. We love our Bella and are so glad for the care and attention she received. Dr. Jeffer is so kind,'patient, and takes his time with every one of his patients. We wouldn't trade him for the world! read more

We have been going to Cornwallis Road Vet Hospital for about 4 years now - for our cat and three dogs. The vets are incredible and we have seen them all over the years! The front desk staff (hat tip to Casey and Alexis who have been around for a long time) are always so helpful. Their online messaging platform is easy to use and they are very prompt. Dr. Tam and Dr. Mhoon took great care for our eldest pup who recently crossed the rainbow bridge - they went out of their way to make sure she was comfortable and happy and went above and beyond - more than I would expect any vet to. Dr. Mhoon is an incredible acupuncturist as well with an incredible holistic approach to care. Dr. Jeffer sometimes attends to our hound mix, and he is so patient, kind, and talented. I can't write home enough about them, and I refer anyone with pets to come here. They really do care about the client and the pet and will take their time with you; I have never ever felt rushed or pressured. I've also never had surprise or inflated prices/costs from them, and they always explain costs and options. I am so so thankful for them!! read more

Cornwallis Rd Animal Hospital is the best! You cannot beat the amount of availability they have to get your pet in quick and taken care of, often saving the costs of going to an emergency vet. You will not find this convenience at nearby vets who can't get you in for weeks. All of the doctors there are experienced and are great at what they do. We first went there with our elderly dog, Molly, who had a complex decomposition in her health. Dr. Tam was kind, compassionate, and was there every step of the way helping us through end of life care. He was readily available with writing prescriptions and answering questions almost daily. Our next dog, Henry, also received wonderful care from Dr. Jeffer. He unfortunately was bitten by a dog which progressed to an open wound. Dr. Jeffer was clearly very experienced in canine surgery and wound rehabilitation, so we couldn't be more grateful for his expertise. He guided us through a long healing process with a great outcome. The cost of multiple debridements (with sedation) and serial dressing changes was very reasonable. They for sure are not out just to get your money and really care about their patients. read more

I was so nervous to leave my last vet when we moved to Durham but Dr Tam has been more amazing than I could have ever hoped for I swear my dogs find new ways to hurt themselves just to go back and see Dr Tam. They might love him more than they love me! Having dogs who love going to the vet says it all. No followup from vet about my cat's condition and treatment, except for the calls for my monthly payment. Then receptionist slipped up and made hinted reference that I wouldn't have paid my bill? Perhaps due to my Latin last name? Racial or economic status profiling, I do believe? My cat suffers from very high anxiety, which I tried to explain prior to her visit for her routine shots and wellness exam. Even after dosing her with the recommended Gabapentin, she was still hyper-alert and aggressive, growling and hissing hysterically. Even after one injection of a sedative, she remained awake, hyper alert and growling. I left after about 40 minutes and was assured she was in loving hands, and all would be fine. When I picked up my cat, they had not even washed off the stench of all her feces and vomit from her day-long ordeal. The formerly impeccable carrier was filthy, --- no apologies were given. But my cat was " not friendly ". I had told them that prior to the visit, and that she needed high sedation. They refused to believe the client. So for a bill of $780 I received a traumatized and filthy, stinking cat, and no real concern for my cat's health. Just concern for my cat, just for my money. Seems Cornwallis AH caters to the high earning clientele, and they prefer not to have the working class patronize their business...Much less a nervous cat. read more

Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital helped my family greatly during our ongoing health crises. They stepped up where other distanced-protocol vet hospitals were struggling or overwhelmed. Dr. Amy and Dr. Herman are excellent communicators. Our initial need was laboratory diagnositcs only. Even though we were taking advantage solely of their equipment. Dr. Herman was efficient reporting results and following up with a copy of said results. He even was open to our record keeping techniques to track Tink's health records. Essentially affirming we all are always utilizing and learning new tricks to improve medical communication and history-keeping. Dr. Amy, though, whoa, Dr. Amy and Miss Heather really really shone. How much they helped me and my family during my medical care and theirs was just phenomenal. Heather was very accessible and responsive via phone, accomodating my limited speech ability and reduced motor without any frustration or difficulty. She extended herself to help at the car when talking on the phone was limited by the poor service and my own limitations. Heather took note of our thorough history and worked with me to ensure Eleanor received the tests and care needed. I was concerned 2 weeks of emergent boarding while I was hospitalized would lead to much exacerbation of her chronic diseases in orthopedic and immune systems. The set us both at ease. Eleanor has come a long way since her byb rescued days, but sometimes is still easily stressed, especially after a rough poor boarding experience. But, she was soothed by the stellar veterinary nurses at CRAH, and Heather was so gentle retrieving her from and returning her to the car, minimizing all of our exposure, just letting her walk into cushion and my arms. Their safe infectious disease protocols are very responsible and ethical to our community safety. Dr. Amy laid out an excellent plan of continuing and increasing pain and inflammation in El's joints and minimizing her flare of autoimmune disease. They even slipped in a free mani pedi after diagnostics confirmed her flaring is minimal and she was comfortable enough for handling limbs. I struggle right now with reduced motor and had bathed the boarding residue off her but manipulating her feet for nail trimming was a challenge obstacle I had not overcome. Now, they removed the obstacle and just took care of her for me. Long nails are risky for her, easily caught on rug edges on our bamboo floor coverings. Dr. Amy was also very relatable, so very easy to communicate with despite my speech impediments and poor short term memory now. CRAH respect and space given to those with disabilities is a standard other hospitals could work to meet and exceed. Dr. Amy was unassuming, humble, and very very smart with her approach to managing El's care. Their understanding of stress and anxiety after such stressful events is unmatched. They minimally restrained, and are open to using low key sedation for potentially stressful diagnostic procedures, since animals don't just lay their and hold position for phlebotomy and radiography like we do, unless the animal is very very sick and lethargic/obtunded. They were gentle with my girl, and she in turn was gentle with her care team of nurses and technicians. I cannot appreciate enough how much such attention to detail, especially during stressful times of them having to work to help those like us during such hazardous-to-their-own-health times such as these. Working during COVID19 is a blessing and a curse. To be the helping, healing hand for others can be very rewarding, yes, but also so very draining and straining. I couldn't see one iota of this strain and stress as the team at CRAH handled their work and their passion with professionalism, dignity, and intelligence that our community needs in spades. CRAH is a leader in the veterinary community, and the local community. CRAH needs to be the standard by which other hospitals, such as Healing Paws Veterinary Hospital, Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital, and New Hope Animal Hospital, should gauge their own less-than-best current practice of medicine and ethical upholding of public health protocols during COVID19. Thank you for leading us through such a difficult time Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital. Shout out to Dr. Amy, All the Technicians and Assistants we didn't meet but were critical to the care Eleanor and Tink benefited from, and our own Tara, who helped both Tink and Eleanor many times in previous hospitals. This Vet office deserves a constellation!! Your first 'intro' visit is free .. and it very detailed. They really go over your pets history, and make any recommendations, i.e. vaccinations etc. Dr. Edwards has a great love for animals and it shows. The lobby is very spacious and has nice faux-paux, leather sofas and over-stufedf chairs,. so your critters can jump on them Very comfortable. We choose to get the Leptospirosis vaccination as it is transmitted in water by rodents, rabbits etc. It's on the rise so we did it. Veronica is Dr. Edwards helper and she also is very good and caring. So glad we choose to come here. And they are very reasonable !! read more

I bought my dog Debo/ here for an ear infection the first time and pay $200 and was given medication and sent home where the medicine didn't help and I bought him back a second time and paid another $200 i was given medicine and sent home again. Well after looking at the notes on the bill it stated that if Debo did not improve that they would would clean his ear out and check to see what kind of bacteria it is to properly diagnose him. Will they did not do that. So I call to tell the doctor that it was not getting better and he said yes I got the message. I ask why didn't you call me back to bring him back in. He said I don't understand what you want from me. My dog Debo had to suffer in pain for 3 months and I had to take him to the animal emergency hospital and spent $261and then to another veterinary and spent $284 who did an exam and told me that he had a bacteria severe bacteria infection flush out ear and put a tube in. So I went back to Cornwallis Road animal Hospital to ask him why didn't he do it and we went back-and-forth with words and he said that he was going by his plan. Will if you look at the notes, you will see exactly what I was asking why did you not flush my dog ear out and treat him like he was supposed to. Then he asked me did I have any proof so I pulled out all the medical bills including the notes that he wrote and show it to him. After he looking at it he gave the papers back to me and said I don't have time for this I'm going to have to ask you to leave again all I want to know is why didn't you properly treat my dog like you should have then he said again what do you want for me. I said well apologize would be nice. Then he sarcastically said well I'm sorry I hope Debo/ feel better and then called the police to remove from the build do not take your animal here because he does not care and I hate to say what I'm about to say but I feel like he did not care because we were a black family with a Pitt bull. I went to Cornwallis for a few years, because it was convenient (close-by), yet extremely expensive. I became less and less impressed as I watched the turn-over, especially with female vets who were much more compassionate than the much older men/owners. Through many disappointments, I found a new animal hospital after one of their veterinarians DROPPED my elderly cat - she was holding him and I guess she forgot what she was doing or that the cat couldn't walk? It made me sick. I asked for another vet and she indicated nobody else was available and that I should take my cat somewhere else. They lost all of my business that day, 3 dogs and 4 cats. VERY DISAPPOINTING, I wouldn't recommend them under and circumstances. read more

In my opinion, this place is completely overpriced and they did not care very much about my pet. I had initially brought in my puppy to begin his initial rounds of check-ups and I found each visit to be ridiculously overpriced in comparison to others nearby, but I was still feeling out how competent they were. However, the breaking point came when I brought my puppy in after my puppy ingested something potentially poisonous. In my experience, the vet office was not helpful over the phone when I called. They gave me a poison pet hotline number that didn't work. After struggling to get more help over the phone, I came into the office to get help beyond the front desk. A vet gave me a different phone number and left the room for me to make a phone call, because she admitted that she had no idea what to do. I called the number and got their instructions (after paying a hefty fee directly to the poison hotline). The vet came back into the room and I told her what the hotline advised. That was all that was done. The vet had quite literally done nothing to provide expertise. The office then billed me for some sort of urgent visit at an outrageous cost. I'd recommend not going here. In my experience, they are not helpful, knowledgable, and basically view you as an ATM. I have found better options in the immediate vicinity and have gone to another provider ever since. read more

I'm upgrading my review from 2 to 3 stars because the other veterinarian at the practice, Dr. Jeffer, reached out to me personally to apologize and try to reconcile the situation. I brought my cat, Alex, in on a Friday morning without an appointment because he had seriously injured his leg. First, I'd like to say that I am grateful for Alex being worked into the schedule to have his leg set and casted for it to heal - which is why I give this practice 2 stars. That being said, unfortunately, I did not leave this vet confident in how to care for my injured pet, and I was completely unprepared for how he would act when we got home. I work in patient care, I understand every patient is unique, and I know about those days when it's hard to catch a break, let alone catch up. However, patient care does not end when the procedure is complete - it ends once the educational piece is completed with the caregiver. Alex was not brought in arbitrarily or with some minor illness or insult. He was brought in with a hurt leg, which Dr. Edwards diagnosed as a compound fracture of his tibia. His recovery lies heavily in my ability to understand his injury, how to care for him, manage his pain and help him acclimate to his new life with a cast. I spent $711 yesterday, and never got to see a doctor face to face, despite asking repeatedly. I was told upon my arrival they had had a busy day, and because of that it would take a while to be seen (no problem), but never got to speak with his provider. I arrived home with a cat literally screaming at the top of his lungs and attacking his newly casted leg. To my horror and dismay, when I called Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital back in a panic, distressed at the presentation of my beloved animal, I was told by the receptionist that unfortunately, no one was available to take my call. I believe she failed to be compassionate on the phone and understand my frustration came from having a severely distressed animal, and in turn she was quite rude with me. I then had to demand to speak with someone, which prompted her to at least go ask a veterinarian. When she came back to the phone, she tried to relay the medication advice Dr. Edwards had told her, but she did not sound confident on the phone, which did not make me feel comfortable in proceeding with her advice without speaking to Dr. Edwards herself. Dr. Edwards did call me that evening to answer my questions, and she provided education which the veterinary technician did not. She told me Alex may be scared of his cast and trying to run from it, and she assured me he had adequate pain control on board. I did feel better after speaking with her, but I do not appreciate her insinuating my distress lies in me being tired from being a new mother with a young child at home. I was distressed at my animal's panic, not because I have a child. She also told me, sometimes we forget how injured animals behave - I did not forget, I've never experienced it. Hence, why that educational piece is so vital. For an injury as major as Alex's, I think it was of the upmost importance that I actually have the opportunity to review the procedure, potential complications and future treatment plan with an actual veterinarian. The vet tech was very knowledgeable, and she was very kind, but unfortunately, she failed to prepare me for what to expect at home and she also failed to provide us with a cone for him. I had to return to the practice shortly after arriving home to pick up the cone, after calling and speaking with someone who laughed at the fact the cone had been forgotten. I found the laughing to be insensitive, especially since Alex managed to do a substantial amount of damage to the top of his cast in less than one hour. I've been a client at this practice for many years. My parents brought my favorite childhood cat there, and it is also where she died. I've brought my dog, Dana and both cats, Fox and Alex there. Up until this experience, I have loved the practice and had a great trust in Dr. Jeffer's expertise and ability to care for my animals. But, as of today, I will no longer bring my fur babies there for care. I would consider another veterinary clinic with more veterinarians on staff. read more

I brought my puppy in for her first wellness checkup and series of vaccinations. I thought it would be very straightforward, but we ended up having a very negative and traumatizing experience. Everything was going smoothly in the waiting room and when we entered the exam room. The staff was friendly and the place was clean. However, when the technician took her to the back to take her temperature and retrieve a stool sample, all hell broke loose. I heard screaming so loud, it sounded like they were skinning her alive. This went on for almost a minute and it was unclear as to why the tech didn't stop immediately. I felt extremely uncomfortable in the exam room by myself. I question why they spent so much time back there when she was obviously in distress. When the technician returned, my puppy was completely unresponsive, would not accept any treats, and was shivering uncontrollably. A few minutes late the vet came in. She didn't have an explanation for why my puppy reacted the way she did. I asked if we should come back another day and she said it was not necessary. My puppy was still completely unresponsive at this point and thus the rest of the checkup went without any incident as I was holding her on the table (you could have done anything to her and she would not have responded). After the vet left, I put her on the bench in the back of the exam room. She was still very afraid and was curled up in the corner. After a few minutes of coaxing she finally started eating some peanut butter. At this point the vet came back into the room with a different technician to give my puppy her vaccinations. As I was talking to the vet the new tech came up behind me and went to pick up my pup. She - not surprising to me, but apparently surprising to the staff at this hospital - did not react very well to being picked up by a stranger after already being traumatized. To me this was 100% UNACCEPTABLE and demonstrated a complete disregard for my puppy's well-being. WHY would you try to pick up an obviously distressed animal without first addressing its owner? I cannot fathom how that was an appropriate thing to do whatsoever. To add insult to injury, they gave me a heartworm medication sample that was 3 months expired. Since then we have visited a different vet and had a 100% positive experience. I have no doubt that the lack of awareness exhibited by the staff at the Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital exacerbated my puppy's anxiety and caused her (and me) great distress. read more

We switched vets six months ago after losing out two cats to old age and needing a change due to the poor service and frustrations with our current vet at the time. Our two new kittens have only experienced the excellent care which Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital has given them. The frustrations we had with the old vet are all addressed by the staff at Cornwallis Road. First, they have three vets on staff, which means when there's an emergency, it's much easier for them to squeeze us in at a time which is mutually agreeable. Three vets means three times the options of our old vet. Second, we've never had to wait long. At the old vet, 15 to 45 minutes behind was the norm. Here, it's been five minutes at most. Third, they embrace and understand technology. Old place had just gotten a computer and it's as if they'd never seen such a machine. Check-out took another 15-45 minutes as they cursed that damned machine from the future and it's electronic display. Three people ahead of you checking out? Plan on at least 30 minutes. Cornwallis Road crew can operate their systems as one would expect and it's two or three minutes post-appointment that you are in the car and on the way home. In addition to knowing how to use computers and the software package that supports their practice, the Pet Portal allows for online scheduling and reminders. My 'hallelujah" moment came the morning I received a call at 7:30AM after they read the email I had sent the night before which had a photo attached of our youngest kitten's belly which had developed an infection. I sent the email in hopes they actually checked email and within minutes of their day starting they had me on the phone to schedule an appointment having already reviewed the photo which they'd found concerning. The old vet set a very low bar, but I don't feel like I'm settling or,just had my expectations set so low that any vet with a pulse would be more impressive. I love the service we get here, the amount of time spent with the vet on each visit, and the convenience of an efficiently operating business. We've gone through vaccinations, wellness visits, a spaying, a neutering and an emergency, and they've impressed me every time. I can't recommend this practice more highly. read more

This a great animal hospital. I've been going here for many years and my cats currently see Dr. Perrault, who is extremely knowledgeable and caring. A great plus is I can get fresh eggs from her farm here as well! I like that fact that the practice has gone the extra mile and has received AAHA accreditation. I know my pets will receive competent care here. The doctors keep up with the latest information in veterinary medicine. They explain things completely and in plain English and I've never felt pressure to choose a course of treatment that I'm not comfortable with. I highly recommend this practice. read more

My beloved dog, Elvis, a healthy 8- year- old, German Shepherd, died February 5th just hours after receiving a ProHeart 6 injection that was recommended by my vet at Cornwallis Rd Animal Hospital. Proheart6 is a heart worm preventative instead of an oral preventative. It is easy because one dose lasts for 6 months. What the vet failed to tell me was that Proheart6 has a long history of killing dogs. It was so dangerous that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered its removal from the market a few years ago, and after a formula change, the FDA allowed it back on the market with certain restrictions. Had I been properly informed, I would have NEVER allowed it to be given to my pet. Elvis got a clean bill of health from the vet and I brought him home. He died in his sleep a few hours later. My sister called the vet at Cornwallis Animal Hospital the next day and told them what had happened. They said to take the body of Elvis to the NC Department of Agriculture in Raleigh for an autopsy (necropsy). During the ride to Raleigh, I expressed concern that the results would come back "inconclusive" to my sister who was driving. Approximately a week after dropping Elvis off, my sister got a call from the vet from the NC Department of Agriculture, the initial results were "inconclusive". However, additional toxicology tests needed to be done, and we told that we would hear those results in a couple of weeks from my vet at Cornwallis Animal Hospital. Again, the results of the additional tests were "inconclusive", and the vet who called asked if "we" had picked up Elvis's ashes. My mother, who took the call, explained that we had received next to no information since Elvis had died. Within a few minutes, we received another phone call from Cornwallis Animal Hospital, saying "they" actually had the ashes of my dog and we could pick them up anytime. My healthy dog died within hours of receiving an injection of a drug with a history of killing dogs and all the tests were "inconclusive". I wasn't surprised. I was hurt and angry. Cornwallis Animal Hospital gave me no information of the dangers of ProHeart6 AND gave me next to no information after my dog died. They couldn't even get the information about his ashes correct. What Cornwallis Animal Hospital did share with me was not very comforting at all. A few days after Elvis died I received a card from the vet at Cornwallis Animal Hospital saying that sometimes our pets die for "no reason". It wasn't comforting and seemed to be written with a legal defense in mind. There was no apology for FAILING to inform me of the dangers of a drug that's dangers are all over the internet. I was in shock when I Googled ProHeart6 and I couldn't believe the vet never warned me about it's deadly history. The next day I got another shock from Cornwallis Animal Hospital, I received coupons for heart worm medicine from Cornwallis Animal Hospital. It was more than insulting. It was painful and unbelievable that they would send me coupons for heart word medicine when my dog just died - probably from a heart worm medicine that they administered. I threw the ad in the trash and it just reinforced my opinion-Cornwallis Animal Hospital will never touch another one of my animals. I'll NEVER use Cornwallis Animal Hospital again and neither will my family. read more

This is an excellent and professional practice. I used to dread taking my dog to the vet - in the past she hated it and she can be fearful aggressive.... but my experiences here have been nothing but positive. The vets (I've used Drs. Swenberg and Cooper - both very excellent) are wonderful with animals - believe me, I've been to some vets who are not. My dog has never been afraid of them, has done well with shots/procedures, and isn't afraid of coming here. I've taken my cat here as well and received equally good care for him. The veterinarians are happy to explain and answer questions, and very intelligent and current with their knowledge. read more

Cornwallis Animal has been our veterinarian since we got our cats over 11 years ago, they we're with us with every litter of puppies between Olive and Bailey, then our Olive's near tragic death, we lost the ability to breed her and her babies she was pregnant with and the just sat and cried with me till I could compose myself and leave Olive in their capable hands and pray. She made it through, but pissed at her mommy for leaving her there for three days, like 6 month I'm dogs years Care of our beloved pets has always been thorough, professional and caring. Everyone there loves our stinky pugs! Comfortable, basic vets office, not splashy but clean and decent magazines. Wonderful, caring staff, good very but you never know which vet you're going to see which irks me a bit but they all have taken great care of all our furrries and always will!! I so was sad when Dr Parault left to have her baby but as long as the best receptionist Barbara, stay put, I'll be happy!! read more

Routine annual visit for our cat. Extra thoughtfulness and a later (Saturday afternoon) followup phone call from Dr Terrell who had continued to think about our cat and it being the weekend and wanting to let us know what we could do if the cat had a recurrence of an allergic reaction to the injection he received. Our dogs have always received great care at Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital, and we have never had any complaints. Our most recent visit confirms that this is a great place to seek care for our animals. We could not have asked for a better Vet when we had to put our dog down who was suffering from cancer. Dr. Katherine Terrell was extremely caring and sensitive to our situation and talked us through the process in the most gentle way. We were not rushed at all (encouraged to take as much time as we needed) as we talked through our decision with our vet. One of the vet techs even came in and offered our pup a slice of homemade fudge pie as his last treat. A week later we received the most caring and thoughtful card, expressing sympathy for our loss and reassuring us of our decision and great quality of our dog's life. During such a sad and hard time for our family, when we had to make one of the hardest decisions to say goodbye to our dear friend, the extra personal touch really meant so much to us. read more

We could not have asked for better or kinder treatment for our cat here. My family brought all their animals to Cornwallis Rd for more than 25 years, but I hadn't taken my animals to see them for a while. When we had to have surgery on our cat, the vet was so kind and the staff made us feel like they really cared about our cat's wellbeing. I've taken all of my pets here for over 20 years. The doctors have changed over the years but the quality of care has remained impeccable. Dr. Terrill and Dr. Scott are the best! They explain things in terms I can understand and when possible they offer treatment options that let you decide how conservative or aggressive you want to approach a problem. My dogs love them and the staff. There are plenty of clinics closer to where I live but they are worth driving those extra miles. read more
