I am not going to call this place a scam because, in fairness, I share some responsibility for how this turned out. I booked the trip, and I did call to cancel the night before. That said, there were two major issues that deserve mentioning. First, we weren't told until after we paid that the boat departs from a marina 1 hour and 15 minutes away from the store. That's nearly three extra hours of driving on top of a four-hour boat rental. I called around 9:30 p.m. the night before to cancel. That timing was my mistake, and I understood there would be a cancellation penalty. We discussed it, and the clerk agreed to refund 50%. At that point, I thought the matter was settled. Although the clerk had already agreed to the partial refund, the clerk never missed an opportunity to insult and demean me and my family for my decision. He seemed determined to make my family feel guilty and embarrassed for canceling (repeatedly). There's a difference between enforcing a cancellation policy and going out of your way to make customers feel small. Holding the refund over my head as he dished out 'life lessons'. I am over 50! I'm from New York, so I'm no stranger to blunt customer service. This wasn't that. It was simply unkind. Wasted a half of a day. The owner Keith arranged for us to share a 6am charter with another group on the 35 footer. When the other group cancelled at 10pm the night before he failed to tell me, woke up at 4am to drive an hour south of Corolla and there was no captain and no trip and it was too late to get on another charter. After 2 hours of not answering his phone, Keith blamed me for misunderstanding me. Complete waste of a day. We also did a the Jill Louise group trip the day before but caught nothing over 6 inches. I would recommend this trip for young kids though but not ppl looking for a real offshore experience. read more

We went out on C-Salt with Drew and Daniel. What a fantastic time! 4 teens and two adults - conversations was great and fishing was amazing. Boat was super clean and Drew walked us through each step and gave us history of the local area. Richard (local Fish Cleaner) cleans the fish quickly and packs them for you. Bring cash! Would give zero stars if possible. Chartered the C-therapy with captain ????, he never introduced himself or addressed us at all. Went to bridge to never be seen awake again. Mate, ?Omie? failed to introduce himself as well. 3/4 day trip, 6AM-12 was spent getting to where the fish WEREN'T and returning to marina. Among the three of us only one even touched a rod. No live bait, less tackle than in my kid's bluegill kit. We hooked two fish, second fish the line broke and mate spent our time fixing his line????? Ditch the entire set up and get another one ready. Repair your worn out tackle on your own time/dime, especially if bite is on. $1280+ tip for a lame boat ride. read more

Had fun learning about pig-fish, robin fish, etc and got to take a great pic with a puffer fish. I guess my review will go somewhat contrary to what the previous 3 reviews state. I bought a $39 rod-reel combo for my nephew. Nothing fancy but it seemed to work fine for our simple purpose of catching sunfish in the ponds. We also used it to catch blue crabs in the sound. It would have cost $35-40 to rent a pole for the week so the fact that it lasted the week is enough. I'll see how long it lasts overall. The workers that I met with gave good local fishing advice. The fishing tackle is expensive but what would you expect as the only 2 fishing shops in a tourist town. There will be a significant markup. This location and the location near Harris Teeter grocery store are the same company. There is another fishing tackle store in Duck (the next town south of Corolla) but that is about 20 minutes away. The bait is not too expensive unless you buy fire worms which cost about $10. I just realized by chance that when I dug in areas where there is soft moist dirt in around our rental home in Corolla, it was crawling with nightcrawlers/earthworms. They also sell crabbing equipment, and the workers were right, using the rope with the metal weighted clip on the end is actually better than the traps. That was surprising to me because growing up in Hawaii we only used nets/traps. As long as you pull the rope in slowly, the crabs stay on and then you just use the net to scoop them up just before they get to the water surface, surprising the crabs just hang on but they do. The crabbing ropes only cost about $3 so its cheap. You can also get a cheap net from Super Wings for $5. I did not use their fishing boat charter, so no comment on that read more

Took 5 adults and 4 kids aged 3 to 14 on the Jill Louise with Cpt Dave and Sean, and everyone had a BLAST. I think it's important to mention that most of the adults had been on prior fishing charters and head boats-so we have some frame of reference. I simply don't understand the negative reviews here and have therefore chosen not to address them. Obviously there were different experience levels on our trip and Cpt Dave and Sean tailored their approaches accordingly. When the fish started biting we had the little ones be the first ones to reel 'em in. Dave and Sean were right there with the kiddos explaining what to do and helping reel. It was great. We did our yearly family vacation in the outer banks this year and wanted to try our luck at charter boat fishing. A few of us are avid fishermen/women but the rest are not. We called Keith at outer banks charter fishing and we booked a trip on the "Jill Louise" with Captain Dave and mate Wes. Man, what a blast! Captain Dave knows the waters and put us on fish right away! The one fish in particular we wanted was the drum. True to his word, Captain Dave put us on them and we caught our limit before time ran out. Every person in our party caught fish! Awesome Awesome experience! The shop made the trip seem legit. 55 a person and you get an awesome fishing trip. NO. The Jill Louise was an absolute hellhole. The captain brought us to bad fishing spots very far away, and the mate was smoking the whole time. The biggest fish was under 12 inches. The first mate was dropping fish in the wrong buckets and didn't care about the fish at all. A crab swallowed the hook and the first mate decided to smash the crab (female) to get the hook out. We had a young boy with us and they talked him through the entire process of baiting, kinds of fish, and how to reel them in. We walked away smiling and would highly recommended them. The guy booking the trip was great...I was optimistic. But, it ended up being the usual charter experience in the obx. A couple of good old boys show up that do not care about your experience! During a fishing vacation, I purchased 3 combos for surf fishing, Riggs, bait, the whole setup. Two cheap combos for 49.99 and a nice Penn furious combo for 99.00. The gentlemen at the counter was a typical Carney salesmen, he treated every customer like a mark. He answered every question by repeating it back to you then insisting that you buy this or that and it will even wash your dishes for you. My first trip to the beach, I caste out with my Penn! ... and my line shaves in half. I inspect my setup and half of my line guides are missing , the others are crumbling. Very unusual, I've never seen anything like it. Even while being aware of these tourist sharks, I still fell for the hustle and did not inspect the gear well enough before purchase. I return to exchange the Penn combo. I take back the rod and they refuse to exchange it. I explain to the women who is now working the shop, that I will dispute the charges with my credit card. I walk out. As I am pulling away in my awesome 2014 Tundra, she chases me down and begs me not to dispute the charges. Yes, she begs. She says that if I dispute the charges that I have to give her the combo as collateral. Really? I think to myself. What underhanded jerks. I pull over to speak with her, she insists that I give the rod back if I intend on disputing the charges. I simply explain to her that I am far too callused by the scams of homeless Philadelphians to be wooed by her weak game. The next door shop owner over hears us and comes to my defense, stating that they are a cut throat tourist sharks and have a reputation for such behavior. 4 hour boat ride with a little bit of fishing. Crew was nice. 4 hour trip is way too short. Spent 2 1/2 hours getting out to the sound to fish - not the ocean. Spent an hour trolling - caught one Spanish mackerel. Spent a 1/2 hr fishing with our own poles for junk fish. Caught a few puffer and pig fish that were tiny. Told us earlier in the week that we'd be chumming to try to catch some small sharks. Didn't even come close to happening. read more

Captain Mike and Mate Patrick were amazing and made the 6 of us (5 adults and a 4 year old) feel so comfortable on our first fishing trip. These previous comments could not be more wrong. Fishing is still fishing and nothing is ever guaranteed... but they worked so hard to get us on fish, and it paid off!! We caught 9 Spanish Mackerel in a 3 hour span... and it was amazing!!! Please do not go here. I do not normally write customer reviews (unless they're positive !) but I don't want anyone to have the experience I just did. We're here on vacation in Corolla and decided to pick up some bait before we start fishing. We walked into the store and the lady at the counter was having a conversation with an older man who was a local. This was totally alright and we were fine waiting! Although, once it became our turn it was apparent that she did not want us there. I have never felt so unwelcome. She ignored our questions and if she did respond, it was one worded. She sent us to the wrong area in the shop to find live bait and when we asked about getting our fishing licenses she said we had to "go online" and gave no further instruction. Chartered a 4 hr expedition with boat named C-salt. We trolled for 1 hr caught a small ribbon fish. At that point the 'invisible' Captain Ryan who spoke once to his clients advising where the life jackets were stored decided to head inshore for light rod fishing. We proceeded to catch bait mullet for 2-1/2 hrs without moving once to find a better fishing spot. For $600 we Deserved much better service ... there is no way I would recommend this charter service. read more

(C-Salt fishing charter August 15th, 2018) No fishing. We paid a lot of money for this charter, and we didn't even get to fish! The only people fishing were the captain and the first mate. When asked if we could cast, they said no because the rods they had were only for trolling. So all we did was troll, and we didn't even actually DO the trolling! The first mate threw the rods out, and disappeared up on the top of the boat, with the captain. So we basically sat there by ourselves for hours, while the boat moved around, watching the captain and first mate fish. Even when fish were caught, the first mate reeled it in, and let someone just reel in the rest at the last second. I feel bad for the little boy who was on the boat with us, he didn't get to do any real fishing. It really boggled my mind when the fish was brought in and the first mate would say "hey you wanna take a picture with your fish?" Um... that's technically not our fish?? You set it up, and casted it out, that's YOUR fish. You just gave it to one of us, like a charity. I really didn't see any accomplishment catching someone else's fish. Anyone who knows fishing knows this is definitely not it, or worth the money. Plus they didn't even ask if we would be keeping any of the fish or not, so they killed all of them. None of us really wanted to eat any, so it felt like a waste. Really disappointed, waste of time and money. Wish they'd at least put that info/warning in the brochure, because we were mislead to believe it would be different, and more interactive. I will give credit to the captain though, he was very nice and friendly, even if the first mate wasn't. He just sat on his phone for a lot of the time and ate food. Me and my Father-in-law wanted to look into going off shore fishing on a charter boat, we went into the shop to speak with them and immediatly felt like we were not welcome. The folks that were running the shop we not welcoming and when we inquired about charter fishing they became very pushy stating "just go ahead and book and don't wait. We then inquired about getting a license and he stated to call a hot line number to get out licenses. We later found out this was not true and actually got a paper license from a bait shop down the street. I would not recommend this shop to anyone looking to give money away for fishing stuff. read more

Hate to leave a bad review, but I feel like any other family that's potentially going to drop $1,000 on a fishing trip in the OBX should know my experience: Two months ago the reservations were made. I spoke to the owner over the phone. About 10 people, fishing in the ocean for four hours. All bait and poles included. July 21 at 6AM. There seemed to be some confusion that day I was making the final payment over us going into the ocean, as we had planned. The total payment ended up being $1075 for 11 people. Getting out into the ocean, the mate, "J", and Captain "D", told us we would be doing "troll fishing". Being tourists and unfamiliar with ocean fishing and trolling, we quickly realized the mate would set up only FIVE poles, for 11 passengers. "J" hooked up the lines with some sort of lure and cast the lines out. 11 of us watching. We continued to watch the five lines. When one line had a hit, one of us would grab the pole, reel for a little bit, THEN when the fish got to within 20 feet of the boat, "J" would reel it in, unhook the fish and throw it in the bin. WE LITERALLY did almost nothing. After this went one about a half dozen times, the kids lost all interest. We never would have agreed to this trip, had we known that 11 of us would be sharing 5 poles. I asked upon booking the trip, if bait and poles were included. I was told yes. Never was I told about troll fishing and not a pole for each person. We weren't "fishing". We were watching "J" fish. The kids took turns, but the fishing was slow. I suggested that the kids hold the poles while we trolled so they could at least feel like they were doing something. "J" wouldn't allow it. I also tried to get some pictures of the fish that "J" caught. Have our kids pick the fish out of the bin and hold them up. Again, "J" wanted no part of assisting or promoting this. Myself and the other two adults on that boat essentially went on a $110 per person site seeing tour. The three adults NEVER touched a pole. The fishing was slow, so when there was a rare hit, we let the kids grab a pole. At the end, we caught four mackerel. Again, I tried to get pictures, but "J" made a bee line from the boat to the guy who filets the fish. Seemed to be no effort to appease or play into the tourists excitement to handle or enjoy the experience. On the way back, the kids continuous expressed the disbelief that NONE of us, baited a pole, threw it out, reeled it in, unhooked a fish and held it up. NONE of us. We literally watched "J" troll fish "J" claimed to be a third generation OBXer. Clearly he hasn't figured out that 90% of the OBX economy is run on tourism. It would be to his best interest, along with his employers, to stride to make this the best possible experience. read more

Owner took advantage of an 'ignorant tourist.' Sold the middle of the afternoon time as the best when everything online says it is the absolute worst (the fish eat early morning and around sunset). When confronted about his lying, he said he "didn't care." Guide was very nice and I feel so sorry that he work for a business owner who does not have any integrity. If you buy a faulty product, they will refuse to exchange it. Merchants like this are a stain on OBX. ***Despite the owner's claims, the rod and reel combo was never submerged under water. Upon casting, the reel was discovered to be broken and it was brought into the store for an exchange. Only go to this store for a good case study in bad business ethics and dishonesty. read more

Captain got us stuck in a sandbar, going at full speed, and didn't even ask how we were doing - daughter banged up and bruised - Captain and mate seemed more preoccupied about possible boat damage. Owner of boat - Owner of Corolla Bait and Tackle, even more insensitive - accepted no responsibility, and said this has happened other times on his boats due to shifting sands. Then why go thru an area, at full speed, that is dangerous. When I asked for refund owner asked if we would have compalined if we had caught something. Real question is what would he have done if there was a life-threating injury. And the charter was a surprise fathers day gift from my daughters. Booked a private charter on the C-Salt through Corolla bait and tackle. I am an experienced fisherman and told capt Keith who owns the fleet exactly what I wanted to do. Wanted to go offshore and fish. Was told a whole story of what we would fish for Go offshore and fish for amberjack and barracuda etc. then come in a bit and go for tuna, mahi mahi etc. NEVER said ANYTHING about trolling! Keith told us to leave our place in Corolla around 5 am for the boat as the marina was about a half hour drive. So we left the rental house at 5 and when we plugged the address into the GPS it said we wouldn't arrive at the marina until 6:15. WTF. So we sped to the marina to make up time, but still didn't make it in time. So the captain announces "well you have just lost 20 minutes fishing time". When we told him the bait and tackle shop told us to leave at 5 and that he said it was only 30 minutes away, he says "yeah I don't know why he always tells people that". So why doesn't the boat captain let him know???? We obviously weren't the first to complain. We were told the boat has an air conditioned cabin and a kitchenette. It did not. The door for the bathroom would not stay shut, but the captain told me "don't worry, no one is looking ". Try telling that to my teenage daughter. The sitting area was hot as hell as the captain had the vinyl enclosure completely zippered shut with only a small window opening. So it took an hour and 45 minutes to get to the navy tower where we could catch amberjack, barracudas and other species. There were four of us, yet only two poles were set up to fish. When I asked why we didn't all have a pole, the captain said because we would tangle. I fish party boats all the time with 30 to 40 people and don't tangle that often. But we need to worry abut this with only 4 anglers? Then we all stood around watching the mate as he baited the pole, dropped the line in the water, hook the fish, and then handed the pole to one of us to reel in. Really?? I just paid $900 for someone else to fish for me? And all I get is the chance to reel it in? Amberjacks are good fighting fish. And pretty heavy. Yet this guy had us fishing with very light rods and spinning reels. The first fish my cousin reeled in BROKE the rod!! it was only a 10 pound fish. When I asked Keith back at the shop next day, he said that they like customers to feel the fight of the fish. It was extremely difficult and frustrating trying to reel in these fish on a light rod with a spinning reel ...not fun at all. The captain had an attitude when I questioned him about having our own poles and actually fishing ourselves. He had major control issues, and I don't think he really liked the fact that I was a woman and knew just about as much about fishing as he did. So now we have caught our limit of amberjacks, one fish per person. We all got to reel in one fish. Captain says that the bigger fish are under the amberjacks and hard to get to without the amberjacks taking the bait. So why don't you put a heavier sinker on the pole and let it sink down quicker? He says no you can't do that. Really? So now what? Well the captain says we can stay here and play catch and release, or we can troll. I ask if we can go bottom fishing. He says no, we don't do that. Again, really? This is what I asked to do. So we trolled for the next 3 hours while sweating to death. Caught a very tiny mackerel. That was it. When I asked the captain about head boat fishing, he said that is more like an excursion with a little fishing. Well isn't that what we are doing now? Then, we get back to the dock and , after being expected to tip the mate 20% , we now have to pay to have our fish filleted. The guys that filleted the fish had the personalities of a wet mop. I asked if I could have the carcasses for crab bait, but they refused to give me a bag for them, and I could not fit them in my cooler so I had to leave them. It was an absolutely horrible experience. A very expensive mistake. Sure, if you want to spend over $1000 for someone else to catch four fish, then this is the charter for you. Otherwise, don't waste your money and precious time with this fleet. And when I went back to Corolla bait and tackle to complain the next day, I was given excuses and then asked if I wanted to book and pay for another charter. I told him no chance in hell. read more

While planning my friends bachelor party I came across Corolla Bait and Tackle and decided to give them a call. After calling a couple of other charter places I soon realized this was the place for me. Kieth was a pleasure to book with. I called up the day before and booked his 35' Boat (C-Salt) for half of the day with no problems. The morning of the day of the trip I met Kieth to finalize some paperwork and head out with 6 of my buds to go fishing. When we got to the marina, we were met by Captain Mike and Greg. Cap't Mike told us what we would be doing, what species of fish we would be aiming to catch and gave us a brief history of the islands as we passed them. The fish were biting the minute we reached our destination. There were 5 poles that were stationary on the boat and once there was a "JIGGLE! JIGGLE!" we would take turns reeling them right up to the boat. By the end of the trip we had caught 24 Med sized Blue fish which Greg filleted right on the boat on the way back. When we docked we took a group picture with Captain Mike and headed back home with our large haul. I would 10/10 recommend Kieth's boats for another fishing trip! We had a great time and maybe next time I will remember to take something that will stop me from getting sea sick :P read more

Do not patronize this shop for any reason. We were given very poor advice regarding bait to use in April, and the owner just seemed to want to sell us stuff when he knew the water was really too cold to catch fish or crabs. He is a scam artist. Our fishing charter was a huge disappointment. The boat was overcrowded, and lines were tangled all the time. The captain of the boat did not know where to go to catch fish, and it was his first time out that season. He wasted a lot of time trying to anchor the boat, and definitely wasn't prepared for this charter. The captain and first mate didn't seem at all interested in fishing--it seemed like a chore for them. Nobody got even a bite, and the captain, first mate and owner didn't have any remorse. This was the most disappointing waste of our money and time. The owner would not even refund a portion of our fees, and he didn't seem to care. Very, very poor customer service. Booked a trip a month in advance with Corolla Bait and Tackle. Gave specific details on type of trip that I wanted. Was quoted 500 a day for two days. Showed up to pay for my trips and it was magically 1500.00 I go to the marina and instead of a small boat to go in the back waters, there sits a 46 foot off shore boat. So I loaded up and trekked out with the captain and we didn't catch much. Before the second trip I stopped in to Corolla Bait and Tackle to try to talk to the owner. He said it was my fault. I told him I wasn't going on the second trip and I wanted my money back. He said no way. I asked to trade the trip for the one I originally asked for and he said no. I demanded a refund at least for the second trip. I have spent a lot of money through the years. Guess it doesn't matter. Super disappointed. I book with Captains all the time. This is shameful. Overpriced and terrible customer service. Be careful dealing with this guy. I see a lot of other people had bad experiences too. read more

After, reading all these poor reviews, I feel just a little better... at least I'm not the only dumb schmuck! I purchased a junker kids rod for $35, and thought I'd purchase a light saltwater spinning outfit for myself. $80 Mitchell 300. Not expensive but reasonable quality so it would have some feel to it and last a few years... or so I thought. And have to say the young guy serving was pleasant and helpful.... Now I realize I was being treated as just another vacationing dummy. Considering what the owner has said against other reviews (note all are poor)..... I want to make it absolutely clear..... I was not told that the gear I was purchasing was not saltwater rated. I was not told you could not dunk in saltwater. I was not told you could not get even the slightest splash of saltwater on this item. And It was not submerged, but it did get it heavily splashed. Understand that I was standing thigh deep in surf... maybe you are expected to wrap it in seran wrap before going surf spin fishing?!!! As it was I had some fun, caught a few flounder, and a couple of good eaters. However, they were VERY expensive fish, as the reel one week later, even after having rinsed with fresh water at each days end.... is utter junk! I did think about trying to replace parts, but after dismatling, have found too many parts too heavily corroded. Please note... this review is not coming 3 months after the fact. I purchased this kit the week before last, was clearly given very poor advice, and have total junk to show for it. I did call the shop this afternoon to ask what they might be able to do... and offered to email pictures of the dismantled reel, because I cannot believe the degree of damage after only one week. The parts quality has to be so poor as to be laughable... Yet the young lady who had a very polished and obviously often used very aggressive response.... which boiled down to, no can do sucker! I tried to make my case.... crazy stuff, like.... - you are selling tackle in OBX (next to the sea), don't you think it should be saltwater rated? - shouldn't you make these facts clear so you don't get irate customers? - even if it's not saltwater rated, shouldnt a $40-50 reel last more than 3 weeks? - if you can't stand behind your products, then how about selling $20 single use reels I was obviously making too much sense... so she hung up on me... presumably to fleece a few more suckers! read more

Miss Jill Louise- I had a good experience reserving and paying for the boat with the shop, but not a good experience on the boat. I have been head boat fishing several times so I know what to expect. The boat caught a few novelty fish (i.e puffer fish) maybe 12 fish amongst the 20 people onboard. Captian Dave joked through safety instructions, sat in the cabin smoking cigarettes and talking on his phone. The only time he did come out was to berate someone when their line got tangled. Telling them "If you want to let your line out that far then go charter a marlin boat over there, they cost allot more", "let me give you a personal demonistration"... bottom line is there are half a dozen charters of this type in the area, I recommend trying somewhere else. read more

I am in Corolla the week of 7/11/2015 and planned to take my kids on a half day trip because they did not want to try a full day. We went out on the C-Therapy almost $600 because of the extra CC charge. We spent 2.5 hours of our trip trolling with no bite, gear that was dragging grass which they talked about solutions using wax on the planers ( for this kind of money the equipment should have been ready to go ) the last segment of the trip when my kids woke up we spent bottom fishing, I would have saved money just getting on a head boat. I have been on enough charters in OBX, the Gulf, etc. and have never been on a boat with no plan B where the Captain could not put you on top of a fish. They spent most of time on radio listening to the other boats were and planning for next trip, including telling us they were keeping these tiny fish we caught on bottom for bait in the morning. The final words were make sure you tip your mate he has worked real hard, it was a luxury ride the Captain should have taken care of that or offered a special rate on another trip. Upon return the next day we spent another $200 in tackle in the shop, no high expectations here ( just a hint visit Wal-Mart on your way in ) good generic fishing advice when we mentioned the charter we were not specific on who's boat and they said you should have gone on one of ours, when I said I did nothing else was said. I returned again and purchased another rig and this morning went back to the shop to get a piece of PVC to hold the rod in sand and was told of a minimum $10 charge for credit. That was it I spent $1000 with this company this year and will not return on future visits to our new home. Others in area said I should have asked around. Shame on me read more
