The Outer Banks Wild Horse Tour was an unforgettable experience. First of all, you're in a 4WD truck riding along this beautiful, pristine beach with a gorgeous view. In the earlier hours, the beach was still empty & quiet. Then we saw them - we saw these wild horses in small packs of 3 or 4, foraging along the grassy hills & walking through the sand. Our truck became quiet immediately. It amazed me that they weren't afraid of humans, or these trucks. They kept their distance, but they continued doing their own thing. Nature at its best. At one point, beyond the public beach, our truck got stuck in some mud. While waiting for a tow, we were treated to such a sight... initially we saw a small family of 3 horses. Then around the bend, came about 7 more, including a foal! They kind of trapsed about, hung around, & munched on nearby grass. When we got out of the mud, the horses still hung around, almost as if they enjoyed the attention & the company. As we finally headed back across the beach, the day grew warmer, and we saw more & more trucks lining the shore & setting up camp. Who knew?! Where I'm from, you can't drive onto the beach & setup camp right along the shore. Hmm... something for our next trip out here - note to self: rent a Jeep to hang on the beach. We were SO lucky to be in the right place at the right time! We didn't care that we were stuck there for an hour, because that just MADE our trip! It was quite the adventure. Corolla is a beautiful, scenic place & has an entirely different feel than other parts of the OBX. read more

I recently visited the beach in Corolla with my two sons. We were excited to enjoy the sand, the ocean, and especially the horses we all love so much. Since I had seen another vehicle get stuck, I decided to park my truck and walk instead. As we made our way down onto the beach, a tour company vehicle approached. Out of courtesy, we moved to the side. However, the driver leaned on his horn, forcing me to move my boys further up onto the dune. Confused, I turned to see him yelling at us in front of a full vehicle of passengers, many of whom looked just as stunned as we were. The driver shouted that "this beach is only for vehicles." I explained that I hadn't realized, since I had started in my vehicle, and politely asked if he could point me toward the walking beach. His response was, "learn to f*ing read," before speeding off. The irony is that my family, 14 of us in total, had planned to book a tour with this very company that day. Needless to say, we chose another provider. What could have been a simple moment of guidance turned into an embarrassing and frightening encounter, especially for my children. Later, we spoke with a kind officer who clarified that the walking beach is, in fact, the same beach, just with an entrance only 100 feet from where the altercation occurred. My son even told the officer about "the man who yelled at his mommy," and the officer kindly offered us a ride back. This experience left me disappointed and unsettled. A tour guide's role is to be welcoming, knowledgeable, and sociable. Instead, we were met with hostility and misinformation. Corolla is a beautiful place, but this incident dampened our visit. Respect and kindness should always be part of the experience--especially when representing a company to the public. After sharing our experience with the realty company that we booked our homes through they have also agreed to remove this company's brochure from their properties to prevent future tourist from such encounters. read more

What an incredible adventure! This is an experience not to be missed. Our guide did a fabulous job of getting us to where the horses were. We saw 24 of the 99 wild horses in four harems. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the horses individually as well as their habits and how they interacted. I learned a lot about horses. Riding on the beach and in the unpaved areas of OBX was a cool treat on top of seeing the wild horses. There are many excellent wild horse tours to choose from, but trust me, THIS is the one you want to take! Definitely take your camera, the best one you have. Also take a windbreaker of sweater because it gets a little chilly cruising down the beach. Have a blast! read more

Checking in was a breeze - the gentleman we encountered was warm and friendly. Our tour guide was amazing - she was clearly very passionate about her job and horses, knowledgable; and she made our tour memorable. We saw several wild horses throughout the tour and were able to get a lot of cool pictures/videos. Although we didn't see any horses on the beach right along the ocean, we were able to see them in the dunes and near some beach homes. Our tour guide stopped often to educate us on different things about the area (i.e., baby sea turtles, land development over the years, horses, etc.). This was an amazing way to start our vacation. We saw a few dozen horses. Our guide shared information about the history of the herd, the preservation efforts, and stories about the family groups we encountered. Unlike other tour companies, they can stop at certain locations and you can just observe the horses. This is the only company I will book with in the future. read more

The tour guides know the horses really well and even got us several glimpses at one of the youngest foals as well as taking us around several large groups. The tour guide was a bit brusque and made a few bad jokes. And the truck isn't the most comfortable way to spend two hours. But when you are speeding along the beach with gorgeous scenery on your left and a bunch of beautiful horses on your right, you're having a great time. read more

Paul was our guide and he was awesome. What was supposed to be a 2-hour trip, he took so much extra time every time we saw horses and stopped. But it took us two and a half hours. Even as we were boarding, people were walking up asking for tour info. These tours fill up fast. Book online in advance to ensure you can take the tour. As it was, they were booked solid so people were being turned away. This is a VERY bumpy and windy ride. A wind proof jacket of some sort is highly recommended. If you have back problems or car sickness issues, this may not be the tour for you. However, if you're willing to go anyway, you will want the seats closest to the truck cab as they are slightly less bouncy. Though this is not the best time of year to see the wild horses in the 4x4 beach area, we did manage to see a mare and foal then a bachelor. Per our tour guide, warmer weather is better as the horses tend to come down to the beach area to escape the biting flies. We still saw other wildlife such as Osprey that decided to hover right next to our truck. It would have been nice if our guide had stopped to let us take a moment to observe the other wildlife as well. Instead we saw the first 2 horses rather quickly. Then, at the 3rdabout 13 minutes later, we just sat watching for like 20 mins while the horse went in and out of hiding and he talked. The rest of the tour we mostly just sped up and down the beach/neighborhood looking for more horses. read more

This was such a great experience! The guide drove diligently to find the horses. They have no control over where the horses are but she wasn't giving up! We only saw 4 horses but, as we were leaving, there were several horses on the beach. I think the guide was more excited than we were!! Our guide, Edna, was fantastic. She made sure everyone had photo ops and angles. Edna answered all questions with a flair of local knowledge. A few things you should know - you don't really have to be there 30 min in advance, 15 is plenty. If you don't have a strong stomach, ask to sit in the cab. The ride can get bumpy, with the rearmost seats the roughest. Bring a jacket, a cap and sunglasses (for the blowing sand). Enjoy it, we seniors loved it. read more

WARNING Would give 0 This place is unorganized & unprofessional. Our group of 5 booked for a 1 o'clock tour, had the confirmation and yet was still not taken out. We basically were given a shoulder shrug. We had three children with us under the age of 10 in our party, the heat index was over 100 and they strung us along for 2 hours without any extended courtesy. We were upset, rightfully so, never raised our voices, caused a seen, or cursed yet we were Accused of being mean. They have NO consideration for customers to them we are a dime a dozen. We had an awesome tour with Paul this morning. We were almost going to cancel because of the hour drive north and we were running late - we were SO glad we didn't cancel. The 8am was a perfect time. Would definitely recommend this tour. Also, Paul was hilarious, personable and made the tour.
