On the phone we explained we had our infant son with us, and they said they would give us the last room they had. We drove fifty miles through whiteout conditions to get here after closing, and the elderly owners not only waited for us, but had walked to the other end of the motel, through heavy snow, to turn the heat on in our room before we arrived. Truly decent people. The place isn't new, but it's clean, and more importantly to us, it was safe and warm. They gave us a room with three beds, because it was all they had left when we originally called. I know for sure they could have rented it out ten times over in the time it took us to drive there.

Fortunately, I had gauged the eBatteries correctly, along with taking several "nooners" (milspec) enroute, arriving an hour before Sunset. I was amazed at my good fortune; this was such a fine overnighter. Firm bed/fast hot water/excellent flat screen TV, microwave & mini-fridge/good in-room coffee maker/cleanliness throughout, and, in today's digital World, free WiFI. I was exceptionally impressed with multi-socket that provided every kind of hookup needed for my electrics, which I'd not seem before. Unfortunately, the ice maker was currently broken, but, as what was becoming a regularity in many overnighteries, I bought a bag of ice at the closeby Alsups, along with a few nutritious snacks and brekkie items.oils . Most important was the decent/restful night, which was critical for my anticipated not-so-long but very steep ascent (¿Would I have to walk, like I did a year ago, on the Blue Rmidge Parkway?) to Capitan the next day. Only found this out when arrived at 3PM on a Saturday for our reservation. When we called the check in number posted on the office door, there was no answer, and it went to a mailbox that was full. My wife and I sat there in the car trying to figure out what our options were. Called the number again with no answer. A few minutes later I received a call from Smokey Bear management letting me know the number of my room and the code for my room. When I called multiple times the next day to check out, the phone went to VM every time. If you're not going to be in the office during such short check-in hours, or for checkout, someone should at least be manning the cell phone. The room did not even remotely look like the colorful pictures on the website. Our room was drab and plain. The A/C unit worked very well. There was a nice basket of snacks. We won't be staying there again.

The motel stated we could not reserve the room until the day of or we would have to reserve the room that day, Thursday, though the stay required. As we needed a room for that following week and no others were available, we accepted and the rate of $67 was very reasonable. However, after paying for the room for 4 extra days, we needed to cancel the room for that following Thursday as the project was completed early. We left multiple phone calls stating at 6am to cancel with no response. We finally go ahold of them the next day and they stated they could do nothing as they did not rent the room. So, be careful...
