Unfortunately, I've had to change my opinion of this business. I started as a big fan, but my latest experience has altered my opinion. The repair took several days longer than It was supposed to. I had a terrible experience with this computer repair shop. They restored my hard drive after a virus attached but instead of using the built in recovery program, they used their own and brought down my brand new HP top-of-the-line laptop from a 64 bit to a 32 bit computer, which Hewlett Packard does not make. I verified this with HP. They confirmed that they only way I could have a 32 bit computer in this laptop is if the repair shop used their own discs to recover my drive. Then, when confronted with this and a written statement from the online support at HP, they denied it and lied about it. Bad work. read more

-I brought my computer in last week because it appeared my hard drive had crashed. When I took it to Monday after work, since they have such high yelp ratings, they took one look at it and said it was only a virus. They gave me a quote to get the virus off my computer and said it would be ready on Wednesday. Seemed simple enough. -On Wednesday, as I was leaving work, I called them to make sure it was ready. I was told no, to pick it up on Thursday. I was a little bummed that I couldn't pick it up on Wednesday when I was told it would be ready then. Especially since I was not told why there was a delay, but at least I had not made the trip out the shop already. -On Thursday I did the same thing, called as I was leaving work, at 5:45 and asked if my computer was done and I could pick it up before they closed at 7pm. I was told yes, so I told them I would be by at 6:30 to pick it up. I got to the shop right around 6:35pm and found two other people waiting before me, so I was expecting to wait for about 10-15 minutes for them to pick up theirs and for it to be my turn. Boy was I wrong. The first woman that was already being helped was assisted for over 45 minutes. By the time she was left, it was after closing time and there was still one person ahead of time. -To speed up the process David began to multitask by helping But instead of both of us. Instead of helping us both, he started working on wrong computer for the 2nd customer. It took 10 minutes and the customer telling the tech that it was not his computer. So while trying to assist us both, my computer is booted up to show me it is working. -Then I was told he needed to set up my wireless Internet connection. This plus whatever else needed to be done took an additional 1/2 hour. I ended up waiting a totally of 1 hr and 15 minutes for a computer that I was told would be ready the day before. When I asked why things were still being worked on when I was told it was done. Instead of apologizing for the delay I was given an excuse that it had to be done then. I do not know a lot about computers but I know there was nothing that was done while I was there that they could not do without me. Honestly if I had received an apology of any sort for having to wait an hour or any understanding that it was irritating to have to wait, but instead it was just laughing at how long it was taking and excuses for why the work was not done. -I appreciate the work that Cosmic Computers does, but anyone that makes a customer wait over an hour without an apology and only acknowledging the delay when the customer brings it up was very poor customer service. I was disappointed with how I was treated there, and clearly they do not need the business. -one other side note is there were 3 people behind the counter while I was there but only one person (David) helped the entire time, which was also very frustrating. - I do not think I could go back to a place no matter how good their work is, if they wasted that much of my time for no reason. read more

Unfortunately (via phone) I didn't get the idea that they were going to be able to help me with my specific problem (my motherboard died and I called to inquire about recovering my data). The solutions he offered seemed off mark so I did not go in. I'm glad that others have had good experiences but suggest checking around if you can. Update: THE STATIC WENT AWAY! Looks like some residue had found its way near the display connection, which fell off as I moved the computer around this past month. The owner contacted me and offered a complimentary clean up; however, I am no longer in the Bay Area. He told me the buttons should work by re-programming them, so I guess I'll have to teach myself how to do that. I will be controlling my screen brightness and volume the hard way until my next Macbook upgrade. Lesson learned: DO NOT Clorox wipe your keyboard. read more

I don't have a lot of free time so I can't a long review with all the great things David and Andy do, but put it this way. After replacing the boot drive in my PC workstation, David even delivered it to my house when I couldn't make it to the shop before closing. I've returned to David for service on my son's Macbook Pro and he saved me over 500 dollars after Apple quoted me a ridiculous price to repair some water damage. The Macbook works like new again. Disastrously in the middle of updating a guidebook my hard drive crashed, resulting in getting a hew hard drive. I'd saved all chapters but alas, 11 of them wouldn't open after getting them back from my backup. Mac geniuses said they were bye-bye, probably because hard drive was so corrupted. I called Cosmic after reading Yelp reviews and David listened and gave me this free and very good advice: You won't be able to get those files back. He explained why (similar to Mac guys' explanation) and said he wouldn't take my $ to make an attempt to recover them. From what I've heard there are people who will just take your "attempt" money knowing full well your files are unrecoverable. This place won't do that. David was very nice and sympathetic and honest. If only he could help me rewrite the lost chapters! read more

A steady stream of customers trickled in, usually a bit off-balance with some computer problem, in that purgatory moment where they quietly chant their mantra: "from now on I'll be good - I'll back up everything every night - from now on... just please let my data survive this time", or befuddled by things that seem so obvious to a techie. Unfailingly, David was friendly, courteous, and patient. My problem was a bit different - I was just in denial about how once you are hooked, Macs are like cruel lovers, leaving you wallowing in pain after frying the most expensive part in the system, but not before you're so addicted that you'd rather push your Mac than drive a PC... They are good. They tried everything, and they let me down easy - it had to be the logic board, and it was... After all the time they spent trying to fix it, they charged next to nothing. They surely lost money on this deal, and would not take more, but they got another convert. Without question, the nicest, most communicative, and highly competent computer repair people I have met. David Wong is a competent and friendly computer technician. This place is open from 10 to 7, 6 days a week. Parking is usually available within 1/2 a block. David will usually do a quick on the spot inspection and will try to fix simple problems immediately. If it's your work computer, you can get faster service if you are willing to pay more. David built me a 3.2 GHz i7 Quad core based server a couple of years ago for less than $2,000; and it is still going strong. I run it 16 hours a day 7 days a week. So, I've already blown one hard drive. But, the array saved all of my data and my software installations. Paid David for 2 hours labor and one new hard drive and got my computer back in a few days. Took some time to get an identical hard drive to replace the blown one. David is a hardware expert. So, don't expect to get answers to complex software questions. read more

Cosmic Computer is the best place to get your desktop/laptop fixed at. I have been going to this place ever since 8th grade and now I am a college 2nd year student. All I can say is that David, the store owner, is extremely honest, dependable, and funny. He provides the best customer service you can get in the Bay Area if you have any computer issues. I highly recommend this place for anyone that is looking to get their computers looked at with someone that you can trust and depend on. this guy is a pro. went to his shop because I made a new gaming pc and it was not running he looked at it and not only did he upgrade my OS but he installed all the drivers my new build needed in order for it to run smoothly I do remember now that I did to play a bit with my pc and went into the settings for high performance during gaming he noticed that the overclocking would lower the performance of my build so he also took care of that and did it for very cheap. So, my G4 iBook's hard drive decided to die. The day after I backed it up. No, really. Not having Applecare, but knowing that the hard drive was likely to blame, as the same thing had just happened to my boyfriend's powerbook months before, I took it to the Apple store for a look-see. While one of the guys behind the genius bar looked it over and agreed that it was the hard drive, giving me a $300 estimate on the replacement/repairs, the other "genius" tried to upsell me to a new Macbook, explaining that the cost of repair was close to buying a new one. (Excuse me, "genius", have you looked at the price of your computers recently? Sweet zombie jesus...) The more helpful of the two confided that I'd be better off looking for an authorized reseller or independent computer repair shop which would be cheaper and also allow me to upgrade the size of my paltry 40 Gig hard drive. Which is what brought me to find Cosmic Computer on Yelp. Long story short (...too late!), Dave of Cosmic Computer is knowledgeable, super-friendly, and installed an 80 Gig hard drive and more memory for almost $100 less than Apple was quoting me for just a replacement 40 Gig drive and installation. As he was helping me, neightborhood types drifted in and out of the shop with various computer questions and inquiries which he handled in a gracious and efficient manner. Excellent computer repair right in my own backyard! I broke my computer screen while traveling on my oldish Mac laptop. Was told by Apple they could not repair it due to its age. I started to consider a new laptop but decided to shop the repair around. Thankfully I did. Cosmo Computer did a fantastic job and my laptop is like new. They were very efficient and friendly. I had a hardware problem with an old Sony laptop, and he was able to diagnose and fix the problem very quickly. My Sony Vaio had a sudden death. The LCD screen had just packed it in along with a noisy fan. Before I had come into the shop I called David and he recommended trying to clean the fan out with compressed air. David pulled the machine apart but his prognoses the cost of repairs would not be a good value for money. His recommendation was to sell the machine for scrap and buy something new. I asked David how much for the consult and he said "I did not fix it -no charge" Very Cool. The place was packed with clients so that says something as well. She left with a smile on my face as I did. My HP laptop would not turn on after struggling to hold a charge for months. I am writing this review on my newly repaired desktop. I purchased this computer in 2011 and, for the most part, it's worked well. Then, a few months ago, it started running slow as molasses, freezing, causing me more headache than a machine should. I reached out to some of my neighbors via NextDoor and asked if anyone had used Cosmic Computer, which is about a dozen blocks from me (I am all for supporting local mom & pop businesses). I got a few responses with thumbs up. That afternoon, I spent about 2 hours talking with David about my computer and travel (we sort of got off the subject of my computer). I left the tower there and kept my fingers crossed. As luck would have it, I dropped it off just in time. During repairs, the hard drive pretty much crapped out. Luckily, David was able to install a new hard drive and transfer my files over. It was a tad nerve racking not having a computer for four days but well worth it. The computer is running faster than ever, the files are all intact, and the price was really reasonable. Would absolutely recommend Cosmic Computer. read more

David is AWESOME!!!!!!!! I went in to see if I could get the screen on my laptop fixed. David told me exactly what was wrong with it and what it would need to be fixed, no charge at all. He then SUGGESTED that I just get it fixed through my warranty even though I'd have to wait for it! That's right, he told me to SAVE MONEY and get it done for free instead of paying him $200 to replace the screen!!! David is an amazingly smart individual, completely honest and trustworthy. absolutely fantastic. the guys here were extremely knowledgeable about all things computer related. specifically, a friend pointed me in their direction for a problem with my digital camera card. the card seemed to just stop working while i was traveling, and i thought i had lost a month's worth of photos through bosnia and serbia. i'd been to other places and no one could do anything for me. one of the guys here found some crazy program that had been made in russia during the soviet era etc etc, which turned out to be the only computer code able to help me out. i should point out that after these guys spent hours and hours before they came up with a solution, they only charged me for one hour's worth of their time, saying "we spent the extra time because we were curious for ourselves". if you're looking for a computer repair shop, and parts store, this place has everything you need.... if you're looking to buy a computer, this place doesn't stock any. they WILL, however, order them for you online at cheap rates. for any computer related problem, i will come here first from now on. read more

They are truthful, and they will do whatever it takes to fix your PC (or laptop) to get it running the way you want it to run. David did what the Apple Genius guys couldn't do: fix my Macbook Pro in less than 1 hour for a fraction of the price that the Apple guys were charging. Apple had 3-4 guys look at my Macbook and tell me I needed a new hard drive for $160. They then refused to work on it b/c it is not an Apple hard drive. David rescued my laptop (and me) by doing the repair on the spot for $65 total. No new hard drive needed! He also told me that my slow iMac which I thought I would have to get rid of is more than salvageable - and he could fix it for uber cheap. I'm definitely coming back to Cosmic Computer to have him work on all my computers. He's the BEST! read more

To start with: I have never had any computer repair work done with Cosmic Computer. I did have an old lap top though (more than 12 years old) that would not start up anymore. I wanted to get rid of it, I needed to get the hard drive out but didn't know how. I walked into their shop (after reading about them on Yelp) and asked if they could have a look. I didn't have any appointment. One of the guys proceeded to get the hard disk out (it took him about 10 minutes) and then tried, upon my request, to see if I could copy the content on a new device. He tried this for at least another 10 minutes and after that told me it would take quite some time and would cost about 65 USD. When I asked them what I owed them for the time they had spent, they said nothing! Great costumer service and they gave me exactly what I needed. read more

The computer was old and he built me a new one which was financially reasonable and exactly what I needed. He downloaded all of my software. I am very please and recommend him highly. read more

If there was a way to give this place 10 stars then he's got it, David is the absolute guru of everything computers! In one very pleasant hour he not only fixed the snafud wifi card on my dell latitude d600, he revived the LAN card and cleaned out my startup so that my laptop performed faster. A spectacular win! Steve and Andy performed a very precise, high-tech analysis and fix of my 2007 Apple MacBook Pro for a very fair price. It had mostly stopped working (screen black, no bootup sounds, but DVD started and stopped at power-on). I'm an electronic engineer, I did all the Google searches and tried all the things, nothing worked. I went to Cosmic because of their strong Yelp ratings, but was a little dubious on arrival - it's not fancy and looks like all PC and Windows stuff. Turns out they do know Mac extremely well, and the deeper you drill with these guys, the more solid they get. When I picked up the machine, they explained the problem in detail, how they fixed it. I asked deeper questions, they answered them even more deeply, seemingly delighted to have an interested customer. I can't wish for more broken computers, but if I have them, this will be where they go. read more

After calling many different places and having people either be rude on the phone or tell me they couldn't help me, I found David - David rocks! This guy knows his stuff - not only does he know his stuff, but he explains everything in a way you can understand. I didn't have a computer that needed fixing, but a little machine where the usb connection had come loose (or something). David said he wasn't sure what it was, but to bring it by and he would see if he could fix it. He did! He's awesome, VERY reasonably priced and gets it done FAST.
