A spectacular win! Steve and Andy performed a very precise, high-tech analysis and fix of my 2007 Apple MacBook Pro for a very fair price. It had mostly stopped working (screen black, no bootup sounds, but DVD started and stopped at power-on). I'm an electronic engineer, I did all the Google searches and tried all the things, nothing worked. I went to Cosmic because of their strong Yelp ratings, but was a little dubious on arrival - it's not fancy and looks like all PC and Windows stuff. Turns out they do know Mac extremely well, and the deeper you drill with these guys, the more solid they get. When I picked up the machine, they explained the problem in detail, how they fixed it. I asked deeper questions, they answered them even more deeply, seemingly delighted to have an interested customer. After calling many different places and having people either be rude on the phone or tell me they couldn't help me, I found David - David rocks! This guy knows his stuff - not only does he know his stuff, but he explains everything in a way you can understand. I didn't have a computer that needed fixing, but a little machine where the usb connection had come loose (or something). 2007 - David, of Cosmic Computer has saved my youngest daughter's PC when it wouldn't even turn on. Everyone said it was a lost cause - her music and 3 years of photos, supposedly gone forever. He fixed the PC in less than a day for $65 with all files intact and with the advice to back up her data to an external hard drive. My other daughter's laptop was close to crashing, running very slowly or turning on with strange pop-ups but never able to fully work. I bought her a new iMac, but decided to take the old laptop to David. Again, for less that $100, he wiped it - viruses and everything, installed more memory, and now I have a spare laptop that works fine for what I need. David is very friendly, competent, and is so reasonable in what he charges. He also doesn't treat us "non-techies" like we're idiots. He's saved our family a lot of money and data!!!! YAY YELP! I found Cosmic yesterday on Yelp. I have a Dell laptop and a screw had come out of the lower left corner of the screen and the casing was coming apart, not closing properly, etc. I looked on Amazon to see how much a new screen would cost ($135 or more) but there seemed to be some additional choices, so I looked on Yelp and there were all these stunning reviews. So I called 'David to see if he could jsut take a look and tell me what kind of screen to order. Also asked how much to install it - -$45. (It's under warranty -- not even a year old. Best Buy said "send it back -- will take a week or so. Yeah, right -- I make my living with that computer! So, in effect, the warranty is WORTHLESS.) So I go over to Cosmic. David has a Russian-American couple in his store who are droppoing off their laptop and, instead of seeming concerned and stressed, they're all smiles and relieved and seem really happy. Umm...how often do you see that in a computer store? My turn -- he's really nice, welcoming. Takes my Dell in hand-- and without a word, immediately starts putting it back together. I didn't even ask -- it's like he's one of those people who just loves fixing things. He didn't have the right screws -- then, after looking around some more, found a screw that would work (doesn't match -- who cares?) It's not falling apart! It closes properly! I asked him how much? Usually there's that moment when you think "he's got me -- is he going to screw me to the floor?" He said "nothing." Hey, a man is in business and he did great work -- don't expect him to do it for nothing. I said no, that wasn't right, he'd done a great job and saved me a lot of anxiety and money -- at least let me give him $15? No, no -- David wouldn't hear of it. I had told him while chatting that I'd found him on Yelp -- so he said "just write on Yelp". Sigh -- this is the way the world used to be folks: kindness, courtesy, integrity - not just money-grubbing. Build your business with your neighbors... Can we please go back to it? Not only did he save me a ton of money and time -- but he was really nice to talk with and I'm just DELIGHTED to find out there's a good computer shop not that far from my Richmond district home! i spilled water on my laptop a few months ago and have been using an external keyboard ever since. i dropped in with the hopes that david would be able to change the keyboard and all would be solved. turned out that he had the exact same keyboard that matched my acer laptop. things were looking up already! unfortunately nothing could be done to fix the problem. =( either way, the service was great and i will definitely come back if i have any computer issues in the future. read more

Update: I needed to upgrade the memory of my desktop PC. HP support was useless. They SERIOUSLY weren't sure where to buy memory upgrades for their own - recent model - computers! I got a description of what I needed. A little expensive unless you talk to David. He had the memory upgrades THERE and at a better price than even Amazon. He even offered to install the buggers - no charge - in case I wanted to play it safe. When I see one-star ratings for this place they usually seem to be written by cranky pants jerks who complain about the amount of foam on their lattes. I really needed these documents and I was so happy they were able to get everything off the drive without sending it out. I felt the prices were reasonable and their customer service was excellent. Those stacked picture frames on the top shelf had to come down, I just wish I had moved them before they came down on my laptop, moments before I backed it up to my new external hard drive. Oh, I cried. The laptop was open and was dented in two spots right where the hard drive was. No way was this thing going to run and I had no back up. I just got my computer back from David today and couldn't be happier. It's like a brand new machine. Because I run my entire business off of my computer I was so nervous about handing it over to anyone but it was on it's last legs and I was desperate. i literally just got back from Cosmic Computers. my computer got a blue screen a few days ago, shut down and then when i tried to turn it back on nothin would pop up on the screen. uh oh. so i checked yelp, saw all the awesome reviews for CC and decided to take my baby there, and it was even better since i live a short walk away. got inside, and David was there helping an older man with his computer. i stood there and waited patiently, but i was surprised at how he managed to stay calm as the old man was obviously not very tech savvy (he even carried his desktop out to the mans car). then it was my turn. i explained my problem, and David promptly removed the side cover, and went to work systematically unseating and re-seating all the cables and hardware one by one. finally it came down to the processor, and low and behold that was the problem, heating problem. so he puts some silver goop on it, hooks it back up and BOOM works like a charm. i was amazed (which isnt hard, since i know jack squat about this stuff). he said theres always a chance itll happen again, and when it does bring it on by to see what can be done. once finished, i asked what was owed, he said "nothin, Happy New Year". i cant tell you how happy that short trip to CC made me. fixed my computer, had a helluva personality, knew his stuff etc etc. ill be going back if i have ANY computer problems, so will my family and friends. im referring EVERYONE to these guys. and if i do have a problem in the future, i will gladly pay. because i know it will be a fair price, for good work. read more

My Laptop which was less than a year old had a fan that was running super loud, for two days I had wanted to smash the thing against my wall. I took in my laptop and they opened it up cleaned the fan and tightened it up. So far sounds good. I was amazed even more they didn't charge me anything. Honestly so grateful if I had taken it to Geek Squad they would have probably kept the damn thing for a week to fix it in what took like 15 minutes or so here. These are my go-to computer fix-it guys. I've now had two laptops repaired by Cosmic after both had been affected by malware. David is friendly, professional, and very customer service oriented. He's good with computers AND people-- a true rarity! Also, they are very well-priced, especially if you compare the quality of their work to what they charge. I would have given them 5 stars but the last time they fixed my laptop, it wasn't ready until 3 days after they had projected and I still had to wait a while on the day that it was ready. these guys are awesome. i have taken several of my macs to them and they always provide an honest and fair assessment of what's going on with the machines. they are friendly, they are fast, and they are MAGIC!! i just took my newest macbook in to them again after it took a 2 foot tumble off of my couch and onto my area rug, damaging the power port connection. when i called apple, they quoted me up to $475 to repair the damage. i dropped it off at cosmic computer at 2pm, picked it up at 5pm and paid $65 (!!) for the repair. the last machine i took in to them was not worth fixing and it didn't cost me a thing (unless you count heartbreak). they have always been great to me. bottom line: if you ever need service on your apple, go see these guys. read more

Good guys, but they cost me an extra $138.90. My computer ceased to function properly due to interference from Norton 360 (which I regret purchasing, because I ultimately uninstalled it) and a McAfee program. This dilemma would probably be very simple for your average computer savvy/literate individual to repair, but my illiteracy and ignorance toward computers and how they work is consequential, which is the reason why these service repair shops are open-because of oblivious guys like me. I took my laptop into their shop, they offered to restore it for $65, perhaps the best deal in the city, but still a good amount of money for some, including myself. I left it there, came back two days later, after an hour and a half passed I was allowed to take it home. He asked me prior to me leaving the laptop there, was there a software program or documents that were important on there that I wanted to keep and I told him, yea to the documents. So he said he could back them up. Over a week later, I had a midterm that I had to type. I was looking for Microsoft Word and couldn't find it. I called him up and asked him if there was a way that I could "retrieve" Microsoft Word, thinking that he backed Microsoft Office up. He didn't understand what I meant and ultimately notified me that software couldn't be backed up. Again, I'm generally not knowledgeable when it comes to computers or anything related to them. Microsoft Office 2010 (Microsoft Word, Power Point, etc.) had been installed by my brother, who handed me his laptop a few years ago. Since then, I've had it and my documents on my laptop. My brother left, so I didn't have the product key for Microsoft Office to install it again. I ended up having to burn an extra $138.90 to purchase a program that I once had for free. I think the guy, David, thought that either I or my brother installed it illegally because he asked me if I illegally downloaded it. It wasn't that, it was just that I didn't have the product key available to me. When you purchase Microsoft Office, you purchase the software and can use the product key on up to 3 pc's (which you have to pay extra money for). To his credit, he did ask me whether the software programs were important to me, but again, I'm not really sophisticated relative to computer-knowledge. I didn't know that him uninstalling it, meant that I couldn't have access to it again. Had I been well-informed on computer/technological matters, then there would've been a more justifiable argument that I should've been aware of what was going on. In fact, had I been well-informed on computer/technological matters, I probably would've been able to fix the problem myself and circumvented the disappointment of all of this, including with having to lose $138.90, almost $140, for something I once possessed for free, not to mention the $65 I initially paid. Edit: Some weeks ago, my internal hard drive crashed and my laptop ceased functioning. It would not properly start up, so I couldn't access my files. I went back to these guys to try them out for a second time (I believe in multiple chances). And I asked them what was the reason that my laptop wasn't working as it should, and they informed me that with internal hard drives, sometimes it crashes and ceases to work. For about $140.04 they offered to replace the hard drive ($65 for the labor, the rest for the actual hard drive from the manufacturer they were purchasing it from). My old hard drive had only 65GB on it, which is insanely low. I'd keep seeing, "no more disk space" pop-ups on my screen. The one they purchased for me had 465GB for around $70-$75. Ultimately it took a little over a week (largely waited on the manufacturer), just a few days before the school semester was about to begin and it thankfully worked well. Unfortunately I had to go back to Windows Vista from Windows 7, but unfortunately that's what happens when these kinds of things occur with a laptop. I told them about how, before I went to them, I paid these guys online who claimed to be a computer technicians for a variety of computer companies, thinking they could remedy the problem, when all they did was install anti-virus programs on another laptop that I no longer used. And when I told these guys that, after that happened, David said it was a scam. I really have no idea why I didn't go back to these guys before handing over $200 to those online guys (I talked to my bank the following day about halting the transaction). These guys here (at Cosmic Computer) are good at what they do and their prices are reasonable. There are a lot of people who overcharge for doing the work that these guys do, which I believe is the reason why people keep coming back to them. I've seen them twice already and if my laptop stops functioning the way it's supposed to (which with its history, I'm expecting it to, again), then hopefully I'll go back to these guys. My laptop was just slow and sad. A lot of viruses and general dysfunctionality. I found these guys on yelp and brought my laptop in the same day. They diagnosed the problem quickly and I had confidence in their ability to straighten things out. There were some difficulties, and David worked through them and now everything is working great. Pricing reasonable, nice people. If you have a type A personality, like me, you might get antsy. Go when you have a wide berth of time. It's not a pop-in/pop-out kind of place. read more

Small computer shop with a HUGE heart. The owner (i'm guessing) with glasses, I think his name is David according to the other reviewers, is just a real genuine guy. He worked like hec to fix my laptop instead of me having to buy a whole new one, and even after i kept saying that its ok for him to give up after over an hour straight of working on it, he still wouldn't quit! and then when he finally fixed it, which i thought was impossible, he was just going to charge me next to nothing and told me its not about the money??!!! genuine, honest guys who work their asses off to make sure you leave satisfied are very hard to come by so don't be afraid to take your computer here! read more

These guys are really nice, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately they fixed something on my computer which should have been replaced. When the problems came back, after a day or so, I had to take it elsewhere, and the guy had to replace that same part. If only they had taken a bit more time to investigate the problem, I could have saved the money I spent, which I may as well have flushed down the toilet, since I had to have the part completely replaced. Any computer problems that I experience are major stresses in my life because I am just not a techie at all! A few weeks ago my Dell PC Dimension 8400 was infected with a virus that McAfee was not able to detect and get rid of. I finally was able to get rid of it with Microsoft Defender but it corrupted my config files. My friend attempted to reformat my operating system for me but I could tell he didn't know what he was doing. I turned to Yelp to help me find someone competent to reformat my OS. I went with Cosmic Computer because they have great reviews and they are a local neighborhood business which I prefer. David at Cosmic is not only knowledgeable but patient, has great customer service skills, listens to my concerns, takes the time to explain & clarify what he will do for me, and deliver what he promised. His fees are extremely affordable - given that my computer is 5 years old and I didn't want to put much money into it. After I got back my computer, it worked ok but my Media Center (DVD, TV tuner) was not playing due to missing software. He spent an hour of his time to help me download free software to get it to work and did not charge me. I was so grateful! I highly recommend this company and will go to them for my future PC needs. I'm happy that I found someone that I can trust to give me good advice and great service. One more thing - for those unattached ladies, David is the type of guy that you would take home to meet your parents. He's caring, attentive, smart, funny and owns his own business. I received helpful advice from Andy when I phoned, and when I brought in my sick MacBook Pro, David looked at it right away, diagnosed the problem quickly, and repaired it while I waited for MUCH less than I expected to pay. He was also a pleasure to deal with personally. At the Mac shop where I used to live (in eastern CT), they would have kept the computer for a couple days, and assessed a much higher minimum charge just for opening the back and taking a look. I've been using Macs since 1984, and my trip to Cosmic was the best service experience I've ever had. I will be going back to Cosmic for anything I need in the future. I was not getting sound through my detachable speakers. Cosmo (I think that's actually the proper name) said it was a driver issue, but when I got the computer back home, I still had no sound. The technician there then said I probably had deficient speakers. So I tried another repair shop. The person there made a different diagnosis, and this time everything sounded fine. The technician in each shop said the other was an ignoramus. I have no way of judging their diagnoses; I'm as helpless in this matter as in automobile mechanics. All I know is Cosmo did not solve the problem, and the other service center did. Finally, the place that finally fixed my computer charged $20.00 less than Cosmo. If I need help in the future, you can guess where I'll go. read more

My computer crashed during the Xmas holidays. I just dread taking it anywhere to have it fixed, as in the past when that happened, it meant sleepless nights for weeks. But demanding work calls for a healthy PC so found Cosmic through Yelp and decided to give it a try. Taraval Street is the boonies for me, but I did it. David at Cosmic promised me a few days to have it fixed which was not too bad at all. But then I came down with a nasty viral flu where I was bedridden for a week with high fever. David learned this and even delivered my PC to my doorstep at no extra cost in pouring rain. Now that is service!! Plus the price was very very reasonable. But service and compassion cannot cut it alone, the team at Cosmic knows their stuff.
