The front desk staff, Jacqueline, was very rude. In the morning of my 6-month dental cleaning appointment, the front desk personnel called to tell me that they were no longer accepting my dental insurance plan. And if I go on with my appointment that day, I'd have to pay over $90 out of pocket for a routine preventive visit which I did not have to. This is not professional work at all. They should have informed me when the office decided to drop out of my dental plan at least a few weeks before my exam date, not on the day of my appointment. read more

I've been going to this location for about 9 years. I absolutely love this place and will literally choose my insurance based upon first confirming that they're in network! And they do accept most insurance. As cliche as it sounds, the people really make this place special - from the front desk staff to the hygienists to their dentistry team. I have to give a special mention to the amazing Dr. Garge, who goes out of her way to make me always feel so special and appreciated, and is now only brilliant and explains everything in a way I can understand, but is also extremely endearing. She's just the best and she's stuck with me as a patient for life! Oh and did I mention the friggin comfort menu? Yes folks, we are talking Netflix on TVs on the ceiling, warm towels, blankets. My husband broke a bridge a few months ago. The Dr immediately took measurements for 4 hours and had him sign a paper that showed the cost. Well, the Dr did not disclose to my husband that the ceramic bridges she was going to fit in were not covered by the insurance. The bill came in and our co pay was over 7500.00 dollars. When we questioned, the Dr claimed she had no idea what the cost was and the office manager Denise said, your insurance does not cover ceramic bridges and your husband signed the paper. Neither Denise nor the Dr answered our questions as to why did they not tell us the cost would not be covered and what other options we had. We will be filing a formal complaint with DDVA. read more

At 73 years old, I finally needed to have major work done on my upper and lower front teeth. I'd had some work done on the uppers by another dentist, but it didn't look great, even though it was expensive. Dr. Costa came up with a great solution for both uppers and lowers, and he got the work done in just a few sessions. Dr. Costa's work is: 1. If you are looking for a dentist that puts profit over patients, you have found the right dentist for you. I have been going for a while (only because it was once every six months) and with each new appointment, there is a new way they try to upcharge and upsell something to you. It gets more and more frustrating with every visit. They also have been putting more inexperienced people in place as hygenists who candidly have done more damage that good with patients. Last straw for me was coming in and being overbilled on a treatment that was quoted by them for significantly less, then acting like the prior quote was meaningless. This is THE worst dentistry I have ever gone to in my life! They overcharged me SEVERAL times and when I reached out to them about, they keep saying that they will get back me but never do. I want to start off by saying that I hate going to the dentist. I put off going constantly. It had been about a year since I visited my old dentist from my time living in Maryland. With my upcoming wedding, my soon-to-be-wife, made it clear that I was not going to ruin the pictures with a smile that was less-than pearly white. So I did a little research and came across Dr. Costa. My first trip to Dr. Costa's office was for a long overdue cleaning and check-up. The doctor and his staff were great. I felt welcomed from the moment I walked in the door. I was taken care of from the start. Even the usual overwhelming paperwork when becoming a new patient was easy and painless. The office space was modern and not at all what I am used to from past dentist and doctor offices that seem to not have been updated since the early 80s that I have experienced in the past. Abbey, the dental hygienist, gave me my teeth cleaning. She was great. At first I was first self-conscious having an attractive woman look at my neglected teeth, however after only a couple minutes of small talk, she had me relaxed, and even enjoying the fact that a relative stranger had me in such a compromising position. After some X-rays of my now clean teeth, Dr. Costa came and inspected my mouth and teeth. Again, a relative stranger had me relaxed in a short time and his explanation of what he was seeing was very insightful. By the end of my first visit, Dr. Costa and his staff had made my years of hate of the dentist disappear. My second visit was for a fitting for a Whitening Tray. I was in and out quickly and again experienced the friendly atmosphere I had felt the first visit. The trays ended up working great. My teeth have never looked better and my now wife did not have to beat me for ruining our wedding pictures. Very upset with this dental office and warn you to avoid it. it was in 2017 that I had an appointment with this dental office. Dr Neha was out that day and so another male doctor in their office saw me (most likely Dr Costa). I had previously received their cost estimate of the work they had to do on my tooth and it was supposed to be around $250 or less mainly covered by my insurance. At the end of the session They gave me about $1000 bill! and because my insurance had reached the ceiling, I had to pay about $500 out of pocket!! When I questioned, the dentist said while he was working on my tooth, he broke another tooth next to it and so he had to fix it!!! He also strongly recommended to put a crown on that broken tooth that he tried to fix and charge another $1000. He said if I don't do the crown the tooth will break in a month or so at max. I got very upset and told the dentist the fact that he broke the tooth should not be my fault and should not be any charges. I also complained that their finance office told me before the visit that my charges for that day will be only about $250 or less, all covered by insurance, and I did not expect this new charges, why didn't tell me the new changes before doing the work!!?? He had no response! he acted if he will release the charges. I left their office very upset that day and never returned. Later, we moved to Boston, MA and I went to a new dentist. A great Ethical dentist graduated from Harvard that I am now seeing for two years. He was shocked when I told him about the previous dentist telling me that I need a crown! He said you definitely do not need a crown there and have no idea why the previous dentist recommended a crown!! ... 2 years has passed with no crown on that tooth and there has been no issue!!! since that visit, and for about 2 years by now, this dental office keeps sending me text messages, emails, phone calls and letter claiming about $500 charges from that day! now they started to threat me for passing their claim to a collecting agency. Unbelievable that they want the charges for a broken tooth caused by their own doctor! Avoid this office! go to another dentist! or you may get unnecessary crowns, and charges that they don't discuss with you before your visit! read more

Personally I liked Dr. Costa but from the Service I received, I needed to give him 1 star Pro's * He has a nice new innovated office. * He and his staff are very personable. * If you are just going to a cleaning and you don't have a lot of dental work, you should be fine. Con's * I went to Dr. Costa for a cleaning and a crown that was bothering me in October 2014. Dr. Costa replaced the crown in January 2015. I returned 4+ times to have my night guard adjusted. After the 4th time, I decided it was time for a new Dentist. The new Dentist immediately sent me to get a root canal. My night guard was no longer useable after so many adjustments from Dr. Costa and his staff (sometimes I didn't see Dr. Costa all all). I contacted Dr. Costa and requested some compensation for the night guard since a new one costs around $500. After chasing his staff for 1 month, I was told if he didn't make the night guard he wasn't responsible. * The office is extremely busy and Dr. Costa jumps from one patient to another. He doesn't seem to remember his patients and how often he has seen them. I was in his office 5+ times and I never saw less than 3 people patients in the office at one time. * I would not recommend Dr. Costa to a friend. read more

He needs to stop spamming people. I have not been able to unsubscribe from his email list for three years. Even after asking his staff in person. And since it comes from his personal email address, which I emailed once, I cannot seem to mark it as spam. The only reason I gave them my email address was so they could forward me xrays, which they actually lost. So no xrarys, but yearssssss of email marketing. Another time, after asking which teeth he filled, he responded with dentist jargon, a number and letter which corresponds to those teeth. He should focus efforts on making that information understandable and useful, instead of spending cash on marketing. If he emailed a generic graphic of teeth, and then embedded that as a guide so we would know what exactly he did, that would be helpful. Instead you go in, get work done on your mouth and come out not exactly sure what happened. My mechanic emails me which parts were replaced on my car and the modle numbers. My dentist emails me slick marketing material. The worst part is that when I asked which teeth were filled, weeks later he said it took a while to find out who I was since I don't use my full name in my email (out of personal safety reasons). To me, that is the worst of all. You send people marketing info, but you don't have good enough CRM to know which email address is your current client. I am no longer one of Dr. Costa's current clients. That being said, his staff does clean teeth well. read more

Have been a patient of Costa's for years. Have always ground him and his staff members to be professional, pleasant, and welcoming. Costa is also involved in local charities. My wife started coming to Costa a year ago and also appreciates him and his practice. The k my feedback I would give is to alert patients of extra charges that are not covered by insurance such as fluoride or cancer screening. My husband found Dr. Costa about 8 yrs. ago. Our whole family has been going to his practice ever since and love them! I am always welcomed by the front desk staff with a friendly greeting. Michelle and Tasha are very professional & helpful. They always take me in at my appointment time. I've never waited. I go to the same dental hygienist, Abby. She is wonderful & thorough. Abby feels like an old friend. She always asks about my family and stuff going on in our lives. Dr. Costa looks over my teeth; answers any questions that I have and is always very friendly. Dr. Costa is also really good about checking in on how my family is doing. I am a big baby when it comes to pain. I needed to have a filling that was close to the root replaced. I asked if I could have for anesthesia that I didn't have to bear the procedure being awake. Dr. Costa brought in an anesthesiologist just for me. Now, he has Dr. Browning on staff for patients like me. My daughter who is 8 yrs. old loves going to Dr. Costa's. She says Abbie & Dr. Costa are nice and she never feels any pain. She has been going since she was 4 years old. At her first appointment she was introduced to "Mr. Chompers", which is their giant friendly-looking stuffed dog w/ teeth. Abbie showed my daughter how to brush her teeth by using a large toothbrush on Mr. Chompers and then showed my daughter on her own teeth. Dr. Costa has children my daughter's age so he completely relates to kids. The whole atmosphere in the office is welcoming. Dr. Costa is a fantastic dentist and person! He is knowledgeable, excellent at what he does, and you can tell that he truly cares about his patients. For anyone who is a little bit nervous about going to the dentist, I would highly recommend Dr. Costa as he is very calming, will make you feel at ease, and you can trust his background and the fact that he was awarded Top Dentist in the DC area by the Washingtonian Magazine! This office also uses all the most up to date equipment, which is very important for optimal diagnosing and ensuring oral health, and they explain everything in great detail-- so you know you're in good hands! Not only are Dr. Costa, the assistants, hygienists, and front desk very attentive, knowledgeable and well trained, but they are also very personable and funny! They make coming to the dentists, a truly enjoyable experience. Tasha at the front is really wonderful and Denise is a rock start! They have a new assistant working with their pediatric dentist, named Carol and she is just so sweet and great with the kids. Dani is another assistant who is so smart and patient and she works so quickly and efficiently there is almost no wait time. I've also worked with both Abby, one of their hygienists, and she is a real gem- you can tell she really loves what she does! Oh and of course JMont!! She is hilarious and is a reason to come here in and of herself! I also recently learned that they do a lot in the Great Falls and Brambleton community, which is a huge plus and means a lot to me when I see local businesses giving back. They sponsor a ton of events locally and with schools and do other charity work as well. I've been going to Dr. Costa for the past two years, and I'm hooked. I've had multiple cleanings and a few cavities filled by Dr. Costa and his staff, and the work done was as painless as a visit to the dentist can be.The last time I had a cavity filled, I never saw nor felt the Novocain he used to numb me, nor did I experience any pain while he filled my cavity. Very disappointing...this practice doesn't provide all the information and up charges. I was told I had to have a very specific in-depth cleaning...I felt a bit badgered into it but I did it. Went in for my next cleaning and got a bill for $350, for a cleaning. When I called to ask why it was so much the office replied due to the other procedure you had. I was never informed that due to the one procedure everything else would now be effected. And none of this was covered on my insurance now. I have been using Dr. Shane Costa for years. His hygienists are very personable and always seem to remember you. The entire staff is very friendly for that matter. The lobby and the work areas are extremely clean. If I ever have an emergency issue they seem to get me in very quickly. Dr. Costa is a straight shooter and has a great calming demeanor about him. He explains everything to you in great detail. He always puts trying to preserving my teeth ahead of everything else. I have had several crowns and several fillings done there and have always been more than pleased with the results. The crowns and filings are my own fault of course for poor oral care at home. I agree with DcB, Chase C. Del S. He said I needed a crown or I would end up in the oral surgeons office. I agreed. My insurance would not pay because they said I did not need one and he doubled my very high bill. I complained to his manager and she said that I did not have to pay the rest. A year later he billed me for the extra with late fees. HE SEES MULTIPLE PATIENTS AT THE SAMETIME AND TALKS LOUDLY TELLING EVERYONE YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY (Hippa??) His manager has you sign a "treatment plan" which is actually a 'financial plan" when you are most vulnerable- he keeps you waiting when you have an appt. and doesn't care if you have to go to work. He is in my insurance network and says he accepts their fees but he doesn't, he wants a lot more. read more

Dr. Costa does several things I like, such as leaving a voicemail after appointments to followup. Nevertheless, the majority of interactions I have had with his practice have been negative. For example: 1) In 2015, I had 2 temporary and 1 permanent crowns placed by Costa's office fall out and was charged over $150 out of pocket to get them re cemented because I had maxed out of my insurance coverage for the year. I didn't think it was fair that I was charged to get the crowns recemented, especially the permanent one since it shouldn't have fallen out in the first place. I protested but I was required to pay anyways. 2) My dental insurance changed last year. After this change, during my next visit to the dentist I asked if my new insurance was still covered, and I was told by the receptionists that it was. What she didn't tell me was that it was now "out of network", so the co-pays would be much higher. I didn't learn this until the end of the year when I demanded more information why my dental bill for the year was so high ($4,000+). 3) Nothing irks me more than after paying for a dental procedure at the office and then getting an invoice in the mail several weeks later for another large outstanding balance. THIS HAPPENED EVERY TIME WITH DR. COSTA's OFFICE. Not sure why this was the case, but it obscures the true costs of the procedures. If you are willing to pay any amount for your teeth, I recommend Dr. Costa's office. But if you are looking for a fair deal, I recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I have never met Dr. Costa but I went to his Great Falls office for 3 years. He seems to be a great marketer but runs a sub-par dental practice. I went in to get a cavity filled, they started by numbing the wrong side of my mouth. They then numbed the correct side but hit a nerve and sent my body into a spasm and shakes. I still shudder when I think about it. They then filled in the cavity incorrectly and had to refill it...by that time the anesthesia was fading and I could feel there drilling for the remainder.... A few weeks later I realized I had a gap in my teeth wide enough to fit a 12 oz ribeye. When I went to my new dentist, they said that the cavities were shoddy at best and would need to redo them. At first his location of "Great Falls" seemed far, but his office is right off of Route 7, and was only about a 10 minute drive from where I work. On 9 Feb 2021, I completed the third phase of a treatment program and my dental hygienist, Ghadeera, is just absolutely incredible and she made me feel so comfortable and relaxed. She explained everything that was to be done during the last phase of the treatment and it went exactly the way she said it would go. Truth in lending, because of my age, I was subjected to some pretty unpleasant dental procedures way, way back in the 60's and 70's (that's the 19's not the 18's!). As a result, I've always been very hesitant about going to the dentist. That said, Ghadeera and the rest of the crew at Costa have truly shown me how great and wonderful quality dentistry can be. This is the only place I go for dental work and if you have friends, family, loved ones, or colleagues that need work, The Costa Family of hygienists and dentists will make your life so much better. Don't hesitate to go; your overall quality of life will be much improved! BTW, I am a retired Soldier who was involved in the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense disciplines and still am in a coat & tie, and Costa Dentistry is absolutely top drawer when it comes to keeping their facility totally decontaminated and sanitized at all times. The work they put in towards protecting the patient is better than any other business or organization I've seen since C-19 reared its ugly head. I feel 1000% percent safe going there and I would not hesitate to send a family member, loved one, or colleague to Costa. Definitely worth the drive to get great dental work in a totally safe and secure environment. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the front desk folks. My goodness, they can make those keyboards dance and you always know to the penny what something will cost after they square away your insurance piece. On a side note, if you don't have dental insurance, see them anyway because they are just good folks and they'll work with you.
