Just returned from my appointment with Andrew Ma at the costco optical department. Apparently, at my last appointment 4 years prior, Dr. Ma wrote my prescription incorrectly. What should have been 68 for my left eye's axis was written as 168. Due to his error, for the past 4 years and 11 pairs of prescription glasses purchased, I've been seeing through the wrong prescription this entire time. 4 years of blinking one eye to focus, migraine headaches, and inconveniences because of his careless mistake. Rather than admit his mistake or offer a way to make things right, he placed the blame on me. That I should've come back and told him something was off. Excuse me? How is any of this my fault? As a professional, he should have done his job right. Steer clear from this optical department. I paid $180 for malpractice 4 years ago, upwards of $1,000 on frames and lenses with the wrong prescription, and $200 for them to correct their mistake today. What a waste of money. Seriously, don't even consider this hack of an optometrist. read more

Limited frame selection but they were super fast and nice, once I picked my glasses they got the order in quickly. They said it'd take 7-10 days but it only took 4. Many choices are pretty cheap in comparison to other optometry offices. The appointments were very full, only having one opening the next day due to a cancellation then having a few openings the day after. Dr. Jenny Tseng was awesome tho. She gave me time to ask a bunch of questions after she figured out my prescription. I'm used to having to ask questions to doctors as they try to rush away but Dr.Tseng was very patient and attentive. She made sure to not make my prescription too high, explaining that it would make my head hurt if so. She noticed some other things that no one has ever pointed out and gave me thorough instructions and over the counter product recommendations for it and for other eye issues I've been having. She walked me through the retinal scan making sure I understood everything. I told my family great things about her before checking yelp and was shocked to see less than great reviews. This review is not about the Optical department for giving you glasses/frames. This review is solely regarding the optometrists there. I originally had Dr. Jenny Tseng as my optometrist. She was great, but recently retired. So, I now see Dr. Ma for my prescriptions and regular eye checkup. Dr. Ma is not only skilled and professional, but also very patient. He takes his time to care for your eye health and to make sure that he gets the right prescription for you, given your specific needs. Highly recommend this doctor! read more

I recently purchased a new pair of frames and needed to get the lenses updated to my recent prescription. I looked around at other optometry offices and was quoted anywhere from $200-300, which was not worth it to me. I decided to give Costco a try and as expected, Costco did not let me down! I hesitantly went into Costco on a Saturday morning, fearing I'll have to wait long but I was immediately helped out by Camilla. She made the process super easy and quick. After taking a few measurements and updating my information in the system, I was done and told my glasses would be ready in about a week. Fast forward, I'm happy with my new glasses and best of all it cost me less than $100. Highly recommend checking out Costco for your optical needs, especially if it's just for switching out lenses on frames you bought elsewhere or personally own. However, be advised there is always a small chance the frames may get damaged, which Costco is not liable for. read more

I want to start by saying I love my glasses, I love the value and the selection of the frames and I'm extremely happy in that sense, but the service wasn't what I was expecting. Costco has their own lense cleaner and the supervisor of the optical department said as long as I brought in my empty bottle I can get a refill but for whatever reason Denise fights me on it every time saying they don't do refills anymore even though he said as long as we ask and have the bottle that yes we can so I don't understand the disconnect. If the policy has changed I completely understand however Denise is the only one who ever denies me and I find it rude. read more

The department is a good place. Definitely get glasses at a very very good price if you're a member. Can always come to get adjustments to your glasses done for free as needed. A lot of times they have deals by one pair and get the second pair off. Good selection no high-pressure. read more

To begin with - Last week I called all morning and was continuously sent to voicemail. Left 1 message but never got a return call. At around 1pm I decided to just take a drive to the local Costco at Pacific Commons. I even called from parking lot and still got VM. I walked into Eye Doctors office and saw the receptionist just sitting there (No patients present) I was told I could be seen and 2:20 by doctor so I left and came back later. As others have said Jenny Tseng should be avoided at all costs. She told me she was unable to get my right eye to respond to any of the lenses during the eye exam... Rather than continuing to try other lenses she simply said I needed to be refered to a specialist. I went to a different Optometrist for a 2nd opinion and he didn't understand why Dr. Tseng couldn't come to the same conclusion and prescription he wrote for me. The optical department is fine at Costco, but take warning as others have said.... get your eye exams elsewhere. ADDED: went back to speak to Dr. Tseng to go over my 2nd opinion exam results and request a refund and she refused claiming my eyes must have been "tired" during her exam. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Jenny Tseng at 4:30pm. They take VSP insurance which covers everything from eyes being dilated to getting an eye check up. The receptionist was nice, but always seemed really rush and talked fast. But filling out the paperwork took 10 minutes. Unfortunately they were running behind and had to wait 30 minutes extra. In the meantime, I was looking at what type of glasses should I get since it will be my first pair. So that passed the time away. They come and get you at the optical department. Anyways got my eye exam first doing some tests like reading the letters and which one is more clearer which takes 15 to 20 minutes. Then, they put drops for your eyes to be dilated. Then, I had to wait 20 minutes for the liquid to kick in. In the meantime, they take other patients in and do exams. I pretty much had to wait another 40 minutes and I was looking at glasses and they prescribed me glasses so I pretty much while I was waiting got my glasses ordered. Then they did the eye exam with it being dilated. She started to ask me questions about me and then after the exam. She was very patient though and did not yell at me which is a plus and it does not help that I have small eyes. Anyways negative because you have to wait quite some time, but if you have like 2 hours to waste, but a good and patient doctor then go ahead. The optical department is pretty straightforward. You take a number a then tell them which glasses you want. They do the pricing with you and include how much the insurance covers which is really nice. read more

I went to get eye exam and contact lens exam. The first visit was with Dr Tseng. She was Ok but a little bit careless and I did not feel like she spent enough time and put enough effort into it. It was first time for me to put contacts on and I had very hard time doing it. After multiple attempts she finally put it in. Second time I came for a follow up to Dr Ma. I cannot find the words to express and explain my admiration and satisfaction. It took him about couple seconds to put my lenses in and take them out. Dr. Ma is great. He is an independent Dr. Worki g in the Costco. I would give him 5 stars. He wad thorough and patient and knowledgeable. The service people selling glasses are horrible at Costco. The lady with a German accent couldnt care less that I was there. I was interested in Tiffany frames behind the counter and another brand also behind the counter. She was busy taping a sign together and would pull a pair out turn around to continue her taping project. She came back and put the glasses I was trying to choose from away then turned away again to get more tape. I asked to see another pair. She put the ones I was lookng at away got out the next ones and turned away. I just put them down and walked away. I know that my measley few hundred dollars doesnt matter to Costco. I had my glasses done in other costco for years with no problem until this time I went to Fremont costco optical department, which was a huge mistake. I paid for my progressive lens and told to wait for 2 weeks to get it done. After two weeks, I got text and went to costco to get my glasses, I realized they made a mistake. So they said they had to send my glasses back to who-knows-where to redo and I had to wait for another 3 weeks. Now it has been 5 weeks in total and I still don't get my glasses done. Called in and requested for a rush ,they said they can't do. All I can do is keep waiting, and why I have to be punished for their mistake? By the way, they even told me I can't even return this order since it is optical policy. Will never do business with them. I am pleasantly surprised. I waited all of five minutes to be called up. Rich helped me with getting glasses. He actually waited for me and my friends to pick the frame because we, of course, just had to pick the right one. The whole transaction took all of 20 minutes and fairly painless. (Quick and painless seems to be rare in Costco, so thank you RIch!) i paid about $130 for a pair of glasses. The frame was about $70 and the lens with anti reflective treatment was $60. They had brand name frames for eyeglasses and sunglasses. Mostly ranging from like $50 to $90 so nothing ridiculous. The wait to get them is 1.5 to 2 weeks so if you aren't really all that blind to begin with, it's all right. The wait saves you about $100 minimum as compared to going to Lenscrafters. read more

The COSTCO warehouse in Fremont has a decent optometry department. For us visually impaired folks they have a decent selection of frames to choose from. Price vary and range from $35-$ 200 (not an accurate range, just my observation). They have some decent brand frames too. I bought myself a Kenneth Cole Reaction frame for $70ish. Here an important thing to keep in mind. COSTCO sends all its frames to San Diego. So whether you are making a frame or having something corrected it needs to go to SD. Make sure you have a spare pair of glasses. It can take a week or more to get back. COSTCO also doesnt roll the glass, which means if you have a high number, the thickness of the glass shows at the sides. If you're looking to make sunglasses, they have a very very small selection. Maybe 10. Overall if you are looking for a cheap but decent pair of glasses COSTCO should do it. The customer service at counter is good. Friendly manager. read more

It's funny because just as another reviewer posted about her attitude is exactly what I experienced. The prescription Dr. Tseng wrote me gave me an instant headache.. Which I told her before I purchased my new glasses that they didn't feel perfect. As most of us know when putting on a new pair of glasses it fits like the perfect pair of jeans. Terrible, I'll never use them again for eyeglasses. Everything was unpleasant. Rude employees and the eyeglasses when they came in were worse than my old prescription, which was terrible because it had changed. I had to return them and got the young guy who has a bad attitude. I went to an optical store and paid more but it was well worth it. I see perfectly with my new glasses and got great customer service. I first ordered my contacts online with my prescription that I took pictures of. 3 days later, my order was canceled because my prescription could not be "validated." I come in to Costco Optical in Fremont and wait 90 MINUTES just to ORDER my prescription (the same one I posted online). I wait 8 days to hear back and I haven't received an update on my contacts if they were in or not. So I called and they had been ready at the store. I wish SOMEBODY would have called me! I'm now here to pick up my contacts and I am yet again waiting and it has been about 20 minutes! Like WTF! The wait is TOO LONG!! The people are nice but they need more assistance to take care of their customers, particularly in addressing those waiting in line. While I'm waiting here- there are three people working here but none of them are helping customers. One is on the phone, one is making copies and the other is opening boxes and stocking glasses. One time I was a bit worried that I wouldn't have enough contacts to last me before the order arrived and one of the ladies (sorry I forgot her name) was super helpful and got me some sample pairs from the Optometrist to have for the time being. I was so happy with her customer service! Sure enough, my order took almost 2 weeks to arrive which was super weird and of course I didn't have enough to last me til the order came. I am very impressed with the optometry department in Costco. My mother was visiting us from my home country and she was having trouble with her prescription glasses. We took her here and Dr Andrew gave us a through examination of her eyes. Since she is a diabetic, he explained in detail about the problem with her eyes and also gave us some suggestions on what will best work for her eyes. He was very patient and good. I must admit I was very impressed with Costco Opticals. Did an eye test. The OD there, Jenny Tseng is very good. She's busy as hell, but doesn't short shift her patients. Very efficiently run place. Spectacles wise, there is a very decent collection, all _very_ discounted. All in the 40-100$ range. Their prices on lenses are also very good. They do take a week or so to get your glasses made, so do plan on that time when you order glasses here. I used to go to an eye doctor before, but after going here, I'm never going back to an eye doctor. Costco opticals deserves both my money & my insurance money.
