I stopped in at Costume Avenue with a scruffy hairpiece of Victorian-style ringlets in hand, hoping to find another one the same color to wear with it in time for a caroling gig the next day. The woman working there (maybe the owner?) was so kind and helpful! She didn't have my exact color in stock, but not only did she give me the color number so I'd know what I was looking for when checking elsewhere, she also showed me how to repair and maintain to hairpiece I already had, and gave me tips for styling my short hair so that it would look long and Victorian! She took so much time helping me, even though I wasn't buying anything-- it's clear she has a passion for costuming, and enjoys sharing her extensive knowledge and experience. I've always liked this store. I don't need costumes or articles that often - but when I do - I need it now. A case in point was yesterday. I needed face paint for a church youth event. I didn't know I needed it but thankfully a quick phone call and a 5-minute stop were all I needed to solve that problem. In the past, they've been very helpful in suggesting alternates to costumes when I came in late to the game on Halloween and their stock was depleted. You can tell the people there want to be there and that makes all the difference. I hope they get into a new place soon. I first came here when I was seeking supplies for painting my entire body gold. For obvious reasons. Not only did they have gold body paint, they had the kind for your regular parts, like legs and arms, and the kind for your sensitive lil' face. They also had gold body SPRAY, to cover large swathes of back and belly without all that time-consuming powder application. And let's not forget the gold hairspray. They had that, too. And you know what? Had I wanted to paint myself green, blue, chartreuse or rainbow, they would've had everything I needed for that, too. Not to mention everything I would need for any costume I could possibly think of. And a few costumes I probably couldn't think of. Wigs of all colors, shapes, and sizes. Headbands, tiaras, feather boas and feather eyelashes. Costumes for rent, costumes for sale, costume jewelry, fake tattoos... accessories, accessories, accessories. Honestly, I can't think of a better place to go for all your costumery needs. The one and only thing they don't have? Toe shoes. I know because I called and asked, and they looked and looked before calling me back and giving me a nice long list of all the places in town that DO have toe shoes. Now that's service! read more

My child has been planning this year's Halloween costume since, well, last November 1st. In various incarnations. This year i waited until October so I dont pre- purchase pieces that said child won't wear because the desired character has morphed a few times. The object of Princess' present obsession has a particular shade of bright pink bobbed hair ( anime is life), which is hard to find. Its a villain from the Miraculous Ladybug. Korean anime. Or maybe a cartoon. Not sure. Im not the fangirl she is. This little store has evening hours for after work so we ducked in at 7pm to check out their wigs. The only pink one they had was more Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time and less the anime super villain. So no luck today. They have LOTS of stuff though, and the kind man and woman behind the counter when eyeing my child brought up Homestuck and Kill la kill, both of which are beloved fandoms of Princess. So they know their stuff. We are gonna go back, I'm sure. They also gave us a handy business card so we can call and inquire about stuff. Princess tucked it into the Dr Who tardis purse next to the Black Butler earbuds. Yeah we will be back. read more

There are certainly a ton of amazing costumes here - just about anything you can think of! My only qualm is that I was in search for a 1920's costume....a little harder to come by and yes, Costume Avenue did indeed have a selection of flapper type dresses. Only issue is that the majority of them were too large of size. Also, many of them looked quite ragged and coming apart at the seams. Their rental prices (from what I saw) were anywhere from $18-$50+. Which is reasonable in some aspects. I would certainly stop by again if in need of something but my luck with a 1920's outfit was no good. read more

Since I was born in the 80's I decided to do a 80's themed birthday party for my 30th. I live in Portland and the drive to Beaverton was so worth it ! The ladies working there were so helpful, accommodating and the costume was spot . I will do business with them again in a heartbeat . read more

Wow, what a selection. The place isn't that big but you can really get lost in here! There were easily several thousand costumes hanging on those racks (which extended eight feet up) and Sandy, the owner, noted that if we didn't find what we were looking for here, they have just as vast a selection in overstock as they have up front. Needing some costumes for an upcoming Renaissance-themed vow renewal we hopped in on this Saturday afternoon. We "sort of" knew a bit about what we were looking for, but honestly we didn't really know where to start. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, even pointing out that a similar costume I held was "late 17th Century" and thus bordered upon not being Renaissance (seriously, he knew THAT?!?). Honestly, they really know their stuff here. They have a few dressing rooms with pull-back curtains and plenty of mirrors through which you can vainly stare at your new digs and approve or reject. Rentals were in the $20 range for the cheap stuff up to $80 or so for...my costume. Evidently I don't have cheap taste. Everything we saw there was of very high quality---these were studio-class costumes. Plenty of accessories available for purchase as well. Very nice place and very nice people. Thanks! read more

This place has great options and variety of costumes. I really enjoyed searching through the shelves for the outfit I was looking for as well as just browsing for future ideas. The staff is really friendly, they are happy to hang out with you to give ideas or leave you alone to wander the shop, and returning items is a breeze. Pricing on rentals are on all the pieces of clothing and accessories, so you won't be surprised by a big price tag at the register. They do holds up to a year in advance which is awesome. Their rental periods are good as well. You pick up the day before your event and return the day after unless they are closed (Sunday, Monday) in which case you would return on Tuesday. My only complaint, which is minor, is that the laundry detergent they use is really smelly. I felt like I needed to air out the costumes before wearing them, otherwise I would smell like it for days. I don't use scented laundry so it was overwhelming for me. read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I'm an avid cosplayer going to conventions all over the northwest and these guys have saved my butt SO many times. I rented my Black Widow cat suit, and later on purchased a cat suit for the same costume from them. We also rented a pirate costume from them and they were more than understanding when it was returned a little late because the renter was from Alaska and had traveled with part of it on accident. I've also bought costume makeup here numerous times and they are so helpful and let you sample everything you need! We even bought a wig here last minute for a costume party that was high quality for a $25 white wig (normally you can see the wig netting and the wig is super shiny for that price, but this one was soft and glorious!). This is year-round good stuff. We've been coming here for all of my daughter's school play and musical expeditions. The owners and staff are awesome, super helpful. This is an adorable and well-priced small business. They have a variety of costumes from all different time periods as well as accessories, wigs, and other fun costume related things. They allow you to rent costumes, which is great; and the store owner seems to take COVID precautions really seriously. Friendly customer service, the owner is EXTREMELY knowledgable of the makeup selection they had (I got a mini Ben Nye tutorial and it was great!) All the other costume rental and stage makeup retail stores seem to be closing, which is a bummer, but these fine folks are holding out for us. It's the Saturday before Halloween and of course I waited until the last minute before getting the supplies for my kid's bald cap, and this is the ONLY place open right now with good theatrical makeup in the PDX metro area. I was kicking myself for not ordering online because this was a bit of a drive for me, but I'm glad I didn't order online, because the owner really spent time helping me and making sure I got products that worked, which I wouldn't have done correctly on my own,and I was able to test samples of makeup shades. They were so busy and he was so incredibly helpful and didn't try to rush me. You can tell he loves this place. read more

OK, admittedly, I've been in Costume Avenue for only one reason, but it was such a great experience, that I have to post a review. My son is involved in drama at his high school and we were desperate for combat boots. We needed them the following morning and, after learning of this after getting home from work, I was about ready to throw in the towel, as all the obvious places in Aloha/Beaverton were already closed. We drove up to Costume Avenue and the sign did say that they were closed, as we suspected... we missed them by nearly half-an-hour. We did notice someone still inside. I shoved my son out the door and told him to knock on the door and ask if they at least had boots that would be usable and, if so, I'd come back and pick them up as soon as they opened the following morning. (No sense in wasting the gas to drive back for nuthin'!) Not only did they have boots, but she let us in and took care of us right then! They were awesome and reasonably priced. They apparently have special deals for school drama productions. So, we ONLY went there for boots, but we did see that they have a HUGE selection of costumes. I'll definitely keep them in mind if I ever feel a hankerin' to dress up for Halloween again. read more

TL;DR: Great selection. High quality rentals. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who work well under pressure. Went in with intention to buy, left with a rental and much happier for it. I dropped by on my lunch break today (the day before Halloween) and it was unsurprisingly packed with people shopping and picking up reserved costumes. As I stepped inside, they had a greeter who was controlling the flow of people into the store and making sure people know what they were looking for and where they were going. I said I was interested in buying a pirate costume to compliment my wife's well-established costume, to which he responded by leveling with me that since pirate costumes are VERY popular around here, there really wasn't much left at this point, but period items were available. He also stressed that they specialize in renting, and particularly this time of year, there are few consignment costume owners who would want to part with an exceptional pirate costume on their biggest weekend. I was grateful for his candor and inquired about piratey-gypsyish-rogueish costume components that might complement my family's general look-and-feel. He helped direct me to the correct part of the small store for a relatively generic, and colorful piratey-gypsyish-rogueish costume to compliment my wife's high-quality pirate costume and daughter's flamenco dress. Then, it wasn't more than 30 seconds before another employee asked what I was looking for and guided me to a more specific section as I described I was looking. She took the time to go into the back and bring out a fabulous (and comfortable) pair of colorful pants and festive vest to compliment it. She helped me pair it with a poet's shirt and directed me to where they kept sashes and scarves to really develop a great costume. The piecemeal costume I rented turned out wonderfully, and I intend to rent from them on future Halloween's to come. read more

Make sure you read their policies very well before you rent. Very misleading & they are not explained to you at the time of rental. I reserved a small item for $9 & cancelled 4 days prior & they charged me $2 anyway. A cancellation fee was never mentioned. I'm just glad it wasn't an $80 or so rental! read more

What a gem of a store! Talk about a theater kids dream (which I am). I came here the other day looking for a Halloween costume and even though I didn't find what I was looking for, the staff was incredibly helpful and welcoming. Sandy, (the owner I think) was really great. She definitely knows her stuff and I could tell she was one of "us" (theater, film people). They also sell Ben Nye makeup, which is great to know since I don't know of any other place in the area near me that sells it. The prices to rent are also very reasonable. Period pieces are of course going to run much more than your average costume (I saw 50-hundreds of dollars), but that is to be expected for one of kind, fragile pieces. But non-fragile pieces were more like 18-32 dollars a day and they come with accessories. Not bad at all! Also, if you're looking for something in particular be sure to ask for help because they have their more fragile pieces in the back room where they don't get roughed up as much (fairy outfits I tried on were back there). Also worth noting, I believe you can technically buy any outfit, with a few exceptions as they are one of a kind. Happy costume hunting! read more

Maybe it was because people were stressed about Halloween, but this place is overpriced and unorganized as it stands. The girl I had help me out was really irritable and didn't make me feel any better about spending way too much money to rent a Beetle Juice suit that was stitched together 20 years ago ($45 for three days!) She openly complained about me having to come back to pick it up. I cannot recommend the place unless you've run out of time to male your own costume (theirs aren't any better), don't mind an angry staff and have money to burn. I won't be back. read more

I had to write because the experience was great overall (fair price, good selection, customer service). The disappointment was we had to leave for Seattle the next morning and we called to let them know ahead of time over 24hrs so within reason. They weren't open until 11am on Sunday and we weren't flexible in waiting until store opening. Upon returning the costume Monday they charged us with a late fee. I was disappointed they wouldn't waive it or understand my circumstance. The lady who is the manager was rude and not understanding of the situation. I will rethink where I will take my business in the future. read more
