Let me be clear in my review. I think there are far superior barbershops in the neighborhood that provide more consistent service at a more affordable price. I have enjoyed hair cuts here in the past but the folks who cut my hair never seem to stay at the shop for very long so I have had to go elsewhere to find a place that can keep someone I like for an extended period of time. Call ahead if you do decide to visit; I recently walked to the shop for a haircut around 9 am and the place is closed. It is frustrating when the hours here are not up to date. read more

This coffee shop / barber shop is the epitome of Brooklyn cool without all the obnoxious wanna-be trust fund "hipsters". The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and the drinks are on point. I ordered a perfect matcha latte with oat milk - 1.) they actually had oat milk unlike in Manhattan, 2.) there was no added sugar to the matcha, 3.) flavor of the matcha was not overpowered by milk. My friends ordered cortados which were also excellent. If you go on a nice day, go past the barbers and sit in the intimate yard space outside. Haircut 10/10 - Incredible haircut. Was listened to when it came to my exact preference. Executed to perfection. You feel great leaving this place. Service 6/10 - Was called a few hours before my appointment and asked if I could make an earlier appointment as they'd double booked. They were very apologetic and this was fine with my schedule so no big deal. However when I show up at my now earlier time slot I was informed that they had squeezed someone in and I'd have to wait. I ended waiting until the time of my original appointment -- how ironic. For a $55 appointment only haircut place they didn't seem value my time. Could've at least knocked $5 this expensive haircut for giving me the run around Price: $55 is expensive when you need to get a haircut every 4-6 weeks. This place has good tracks playing in the backdrop. These guys continue to kill it. Only once had a haircut I wasn't completely stoked about and that was quite a while ago. The staff is always welcoming and super hospitable, but casual and relaxed.... nobody helicopters you. It's unlike any traditional barber experience I've had in that they really know what they're doing, listen to what you're looking for and seem to truly understand every different kind of hair. It is quite difficult to come up with a worse service. Firstly, they say that they only accept cash when you start to leave, they remember that their cards still work. The hairdresser does not hear the wishes of the client at all and even after seeing the photo can not do what is needed! He finishes the haircut without even asking the client if he likes everything, when I already saw that he wanted to do the styling, I stopped him and asked him to make it shorter, which he kind of did, but it still feels like it was done badly. For the first time I come across such a service with not the lowest price tag. It's not a pity for the money, but the fact that for some time you will have to walk with what this master did to fix it in another place later. If you want to get a low-quality service for a rather big price, then you definitely need to come to this barbershop read more

Next time, I'll call in. While I waited, I got an iced tea from the same place. Yep, it is a coffee shop and barber shop at the same time. I just sat down and read my book while I waited. Very calm. When it was time for my haircut, I got Jesse and he's such a cool and chill dude. Nice conversationalist and really hooked me up with a fresh haircut. My hair is a pain to work with. I tried out Cotter Barber on Manhattan Ave for the first time on a Monday, not what I expected from the great reviews and cost. I don't fault my barber who was great and gave me a good cut, but for $70 ($50 + $5 tax + ATM service fees + tip) I don't think it's worth the money for a simple haircut. First off, I made an appointment thru their booking platform and the "combo pricing" is only applicable to a buzz cut + hot towel service, not a haircut + hot towel service, which is strange. I put a note in to see if they would offer combo pricing on this and they said they would "add the hot towel service" which didn't address my question. When I arrived, it wasn't mentioned and my barber was being hovered by who I expected to be the manager so I didn't bring it up. When the cut was done, there was no wash/shampoo which I think for a $70 haircut should be a given. I wasn't offered water/coffee and they didn't clean up my beard/neck or sideburns. The cut was good don't get me wrong, but the service/experience was lacking. Lastly, it's a "cash only" business and they do not have an ATM but while waiting to pay, they checked out a customer in front of me using a credit card machine... I guess it's a way to skip out on card-processing fees, but it's 2021 and there are multiple companies that will process for free. Maybe it was just an off day but I think I'll keep trying out different barbers for a more customer-focused service. read more

I've been looking for a decent barber in NYC for the last 18 months. I found Cotter on Google and tried my luck as a walk-in 30 mins before close. Got paired with Robbie and hands down best haircut I've had. Shop had great vibes (and products), Robbie had great vibes (and skills).Not the cheapest shop around but if you are keen for a premium experience and cut, get to Cotter and get in Robbie's chair. 5/19/18 update: Robbie isn't a barber here anymore. He's gone down the road. Still a great shop, but can't advocate for the barbers as he was the only one I ever got a cut from. The coffee is great, the products are great.. the music could use an upgrade and less turnover from the staff would bring this place back to 5 stars. read more

Found this place a couple of months back. I've not tried the coffee so I can't comment on that, but I can say that Robbie gave me a fantastic haircut on both occasions. The place has a very nice, chill atmosphere and the right amount of attention was giving to my haircut. At no point did I feel I was being rushed out of of the door for the next appointment. Love this place. Coming from LA where most barbershops are like conveyer belts...this place a was a great classic find. When you walk in the coffee shop and barber products hit you and the styling of the space gives you an immediate idea of what you're getting into. The barbers are all dressed classically and well-groomed. I have been here twice and both times on a last second walk-in but was super-happy with both barbers. They remembered how I liked my hair cut and were super-friendly. They used classic straight-razor and scissors with a mix of electric shavers and knew exactly how to cut my hair to give it a trendy classic look with the right cut and product. Such a cool shop! I stopped in while my boyfriend was getting a cut from Joe. It turned out amazing, definitely the best haircut he's ever gotten. Joe was really attentive to detail and made great conversation. I also just loved the vibe of the shop! It was super airy and unique and doubles as a coffee shop.
