Wonderful experience with only one little glitch. The Pecos cabin was so cool. Comfortable and very clean. However, while they provided wood for the fireplace and fixings for S'mores, we had no fire-starter ( had to go to a convenience store to buy some) and had to ask for a lighter that worked. Was told due to the end of the season, such items were no longer available. Anyway, the picnic basket breakfast was wonderful!! Delicious!!! All in all, a really nice experience. read more

This is for both the lodging and the restaurant. Lodging: My boyfriend and I stayed at the Upper Brazos cabin in the back and had a wonderful time. I loved how all of the amenities and items in the room are of higher quality than most places we stay. You definitely get your money's worth. The shower was awesome, hot and cold water worked great, bed and pillows were soft and the lotion/soaps were all local. But yes, the breakfast basket was easily the best part of the day and something we greatly looked forward to. Each morning is a little different but there's always something hot, a pastry and some yogurt and a small container of OJ. Everyone we came in contact with was really nice and professional. My ONLY complaint is that the campus is small. While it's gorgeous and well spaced between cabins, there wasn't really a walking path other than the one to the restaurant which is only a minute away. I wish there was a place to walk around without being stared at by other patrons relaxing on their patio. Right behind us was Mr. Gattis. Luckily we didn't hear too much noise from the roads. Restaurant: The first time we came, we ate at the restaurant to celebrate a double birthday as ours are exactly one week apart from each other. We ordered the chicken fried ribeye with lobster and the pork chop with a side of mexican corn. Of course the food was amazing. Yes, it's pricey, but it was really worth it and I didn't feel like anything was too overpriced. We actually ordered to go on our last night staying at the cabins and had the ribeye to go. Normally we would never order a steak to go but lots of wine later we thought it was a good idea. Plus, it really is less than a minute walk back to the cabin. And yes, the ribeye was amazing! My only complaint here was that they didn't do anything special for our birthdays as we were hoping. But highly recommend this restaurant whether or not you're staying at the cabins. read more

We attended a wedding in Fredericksburg and were invited to stay at the Cotton Gin Village with the Groom's family. We stayed in the Nueces Cabin which featured a king sized bed and bath, separated from the den area by a huge "barn door". The shower had multiple shower heads including a large rectangular rain head, if you're into that sort of thing. There's a microwave, coffee maker, fridge, and wine cooler, but no other cooking facilities in the cabin. That said, breakfast is provided in the form of a huge picnic basket that is delivered to the front door every morning at 9:00 AM. Picnic is not the correct word to describe what is sent however. The first morning we go two huge sausage, egg, cheese, and potato breakfast tacos - still hot - along with two warm raspberry filled croissants, two granola covered yogurts, two fresh fruit cups, and two cups of orange juice. The second day was similar, with two very nice frittatas in place of the tacos, and the third day featured cereal and muffins. Pretty neat place to stay! read more

Ok...trying to be as honest as I can... This place deserves a 10 star rating!! It's a phenomenal place!! It's got a restaurant and a very old fashioned atmosphere!! But I would like to share my experience as it came crashing down. First and foremost I would like to say that booking and arriving was the most easiest, experience that my wife and I have experienced!! Unfortunately it became uncomfortable and uneasy real quick. Our cabin was shared next to another, occupant. We were backed up to the highway..so we could hear all the loud freeway noise, but that was the least of our worries. The "neighbors" next to us decided to have an after party. We couldn't get a wink of sleep. They were drunk and disorderly. (Just a quick FYI...there's no phone In the room.) I called the "the after hours non-or semi emergency phone they had" And explain the situation in a voice mail. NO ONE CALLED BACK!! So my wife and I had to endure nonsense from a place that refuses to have children here!! This is an amazing place and you should book here but don't share a cabin with strangers...there are cabins that individually and with no neighbors. Management needs to have some sort of security and be able to regulate...non ethical behavior. read more

Overall, it is OK but you can do better. One star for having Open Table reservations, one star for friendly service and the third star for good appetizers. We loved the Crispy Asiago Crusted Eggplant Fries $7.50. Our waiter, Diana, brought a platter with eight huge slices, easily enough for four people. They looked like giant fried okra, light corn batter, deep fried, with the sauce drizzed over them. I ate three, excellent and recommended. The Hill Country Caesar Salad $5.50 was really good, actually amazing. I loved it, lots of shaved cheese. Delicious. And I had the Black Diamond Buffalo Enchiladas $19.95. Huge portion, enough for 2 1/2 adults. Presentation was the over-crowded plate type covered in sauce. Buffalo meat appeared to be shaved or pulled. Taste was just ok. I kept thinking "should have stopped with the salad... We did not care for the Singing Water Sauvignon Blanc, a local vineyard. This wine was prominently featured on the wine list, $38. It had no nose, was a pale watery color and had a fairly strong acetic aftertaste. We were very disappointed. It reminded me of a cheap Chili box wine. And for desert we tried the "Chicken Fried" Pecan Pie $7.95 with Chocolate Jack Daniels Ice Cream. The ice cream was good. Otherwise, not so much.... cute idea but no. Our total, with tip, was about $130. I think you can do much better in Fredericksburg without much of an effort. But if you go anyway after reading this just have a glass of Becker Chardonnay and order one appetizer to share with the table. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. My husband booked a room for Friday and Saturday evening at the Cotton Gin for our anniversary. To ensure the weekend was a surprise, my husband mailed my gifts to the front desk and arranged for a florist in Fredericksburg to have a bouquet created for our room. Unfortunately, a tragic and unexpected death in my family prevented us going to Fredericksburg that weekend. My husband called the Cotton Gin to alert them when we found out we would not be able to make our stay. He then called the florist and requested the bouquet of flowers be delivered to a local nursing home. After receiving a voucher for a stay two night stay between SUNDAY-THURSDAY, I decided to call the General Manager, Ross Burtwell, to see if he would be willing to work out a deal since we would be traveling from out of town and can only stay on a Friday and Saturday evening. I proposed we pay a reduced rate or fee and turn in our voucher in exchange for a Friday and Saturday night stay. The General Manager proceeded to explain how there is no leniency in the policy, spoke down to me as in a demeaning tone, told me I am lucky to have received a voucher, and HUNG UP ON ME! For my husband's birthday we made a trip out to Fredericksburg, TX. i went onto Trip Advisor and this place was rated as the #1 restaurant to dine at. I made reservations for us on a Saturday evening and thank god I did because the wait was 1 hour 45 minutes!!!! We were seated shortly after our arrival. The restaurant is fairly small and very intimate. It has a beautiful patio with a Koi pond, however, it was too cold to dine outside. Our waitress although friendly, was not exceptional. She was slow and not very attentive. We did not get our bread until our food was served. I ordered my steak medium rare --- it came out medium. My husband ordered the special -- a grouper with a mango chutney sauce. Our meal was only ok. I had mentioned that it was his birthday when I made the reservation but they did not even acknowledge it to him. They didn't even offer him a free dessert! I was thoroughly disappointed. For entrees, my husband had the mixed grill, and I had the Surf and Turf. All of the meat with the mixed grill was tasty - the pork had a great sauce, and the quail was also well-seasoned. My coconut shrimp were decent as well. The filet was properly cooked, and nice and tender. We had dessert, as well - Granny Smith Apple Pie and Cheesecake - also quite good. Nothing was amazing, but everything hit the mark. However our waitress was the low point. She made a point of calling out any item that contained alcohol and making a face. Listen - I totally respect anyone's choice not to drink, or their dislike of the taste of alcohol in food. But when asked for a recommendation, it's more appropriate to keep those kinds of inputs to yourself. You can always just say "I haven't tried that, but it's very popular." However I believe it's the total experience that makes the restaurant and this place needs to be called the "house of nos". We had someone in our party that doesn't eat dairy and the consensus was they couldnt take cheese off of anything. No we can't make you a bigger salad. No even though we use tons of fruit on our desserts we can't give your 4 yr old a side of fruit instead of French fries. BAD: Our water was refilled twice by the water server before we saw the aloof waiter. He had a total of 3 tables and 6 people. He passed by us 3 times and finally took our order though never introducing himself. We ordered the house salad, which had a tasty ranch dressing, but wasn't enough to cover up the offensively fragrant onions. We also ordered crab cakes and escargot. The dehydrated crab cakes seamed fresh out of the microwave and had more breadcrumb than crab. To make up for the dismal seasoning and low crab content, they served the cakes with visually appetizing pico de gallo, although it contained large chunks of jalapeno. The escargot was decent, but lacked flavor. I ordered the surf and turf expecting to be served something similar to the visually enticing picture in the advertisement recommended by the posh becker vineyards. The only option was coconut shrimp which was presented to us soggy, drowning in a puddle of its' own grease, NOT SAUCE, GREASE. The beef tenderloin was cooked well, however tasted as if they used too much weber-esque smokey mesquite seasoning. We ordered mashed sweet potato and a baked potato. The sweet potato was simple (first day, first year, online culinary school at best), but the baked potato was well done. Unfortunately the best part of the meal was the baked potato. To try to salvage the night, I ordered the typically satisfying creme brulee. (How did you guys mess that up?) It looked like we were home free with the generous portion and dainty presentation, but the custard was gritty, clumpy and if not for my new glasses, wouldn't have recognized this as creme brulee. If you're wanting no-frills, Southern American comfort food, then perhaps you'll enjoy it. But to me, especially for the price, I would expect more. The pecan crusted crab cake was deep fried and almost wafer thin. The crab is not high quality, and the overall flavor is pretty bland. The two-pig spinach salad was drenched in nauseously-sweet bacon fat dressing. For the main dish, I ordered Cajun snapper. I swear, it was chicken-fried fish, grainy gravy and all. It had no flavor, no spice, there was nothing Cajun about it. My friend ordered the mixed grill, and it was pretty good. The meat was cooked to the perfect doneness, very tender, though the sauce could have had more depth. Also, the house vegetables were definitely from the freezer section, nothing to wrote home about. I wanted to like this restaurant. It has a nice rustic vibe. If the meal had run $40 I would have been mildly annoyed at the blandness and low quality, but at over twice that I'm upset enough to write my first ever review on Yelp. We sat outside by the Koi Pond and enjoyed the cool evening. Our reservation was at 7:30 and they were able to get us in early (we were starving). Jumbo Lump Crab Gratin -- t his was beyond amazing! Large chunks of crab, seasoned well and put on fresh bread, it was heaven. Twelve Ounce Ribeye Steak -- this was cooked just at it was ordered and it melted in our mouths. It was topped with a butter sauce and that added even more flavor Grande Chicken Fried "Pork" Steak with chipotle country gravy -- something a bit different from a chicken fried steak. Lots of flavor and really enjoyable. We didn't get dessert even though we had read the dessert menu -- we had lot sof goodies back at our cottage from a bakery in town, plus we were stuffed. We got seated right away on the patio. Started off w the goat cheese crock which was delightful! The warm bread and butter was so good we paid the extra couple bucks for more! We booked Saturday and Sunday of Valentines Day weekend 2021 and we could not have had a better experience. This bed and breakfast is the best I have ever been to. The breakfast was delicious both days! The cabins are incredible, full of every amenity you need. A crazy snow storm moved in and we were unable to drive around F'burg but they offered complimentary WARM lunch and dinner to our room during the storm! These meals were INCREDIBLE and above and beyond what was expected given the weather conditions. The fireplace was stocked with wood all day and night. The Cabernet Grill had to close due to ice on the roads but we hope to try it next time! 10/10 recommend. read more

I dined here this past Saturday, and had a great experience. My only criticism of the restaurant is that upon first arriving (with no reservation), we were told by the hostess that they could not accommodate us. It wasn't late in the evening, and so I was disappointed that we were not given the option to wait for a table, several of which were open. However, we ran into some friends on our way out, and we were able to join their table. Once seated, we had an awesome time. Our waiter, John, was excellent. He was very attentive, well-versed on the menu items, and just a really nice guy. John recommended the Grapefruit and Gorgonzola salad, which was outstanding. I'm a longtime salad lover, and this was one of the best - crisp and light, very refreshing. We also had a wonderful Crab Gratin appetizer, and followed that with the Surf and Turf entree (we chose the grits as our side dish), which was also delicious. We enjoyed a bottle of local Tempranillo along with our meal. We dined outdoors, and the atmosphere was great - cozy and relaxing. Overall, a great experience. My family and I come to Fredericksburg every year religiously. I wanted to try something new so I found this place. I called for a reservation and the only thing available was early, they said they were completely booked, so that was fine. The hostess was nice and helpful when we arrived. She got our table ready including a sling for the baby. Our waiter was very nice and informative of the menu. I ordered the 12oz ribeye with the homemade wasabi wine steak sauce and the sweet potato mash. The mash was awesome as well as the fresh green beans that accompanied. The steak could have been a little more tender (I ordered it medium) but it was well seasoned. My wife ordered the sesame fried shrimp. They were good and fresh. She got the cheese grits as a side and said they were very good as well. The bread that comes freely is very good and fresh also. After reading some of the bad reviews we were hesitant to go here but we already had reservations. I'm glad we went because it was awesome! Our server, Marcella, was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped us with our choices. My husband had the tejas trio of Dry Rubbed Tenderloin Tail, Jalapeno Quail & Smoked Pork Tenderloin Medallion...it was so good. Our favorite was the dry rubbed tendedloin tail. It had such a smoked flavor and it melted in your mouth. The sauce that came with it was the cabernet wasabi, which was not hot at all. It was so good. I had the Cajun Seasoned Pan Seared Red Snapper topped with jumbo lump crab and lemon cream, with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans. The red snapper was cooked just right. The steak was good but not to the level of the pricing. We ordered our steaks "Medium" and they came out "Medium Rare". It took forever for our waitress to come take our drink order and this was just a prelude to how slow they were the rest of the evening. Even when we asked them to put a rush on the desserts so that we could catch the fireworks, the waitress still took forever. As we left, we saw our waitress along with other waitstaff watching the end of the firework show in the parking lot. We missed the entire 4th of July show. My husband and I have stayed at The Cotton Gin in Fredericksburg in recent years and absolutely loved the atmosphere. It is so cozy and a reminds one of the old West. Each cabin is done so authentic and as an added treat there was a basket of homemade breakfast items and granola. There is also everything to make s'mores. How thoughtful to every detail. Last week I came with some girlfriends to The Big House. Our stay could not have been more perfect. The house is perfect for a group. Everything we needed was provided. We just walked in with our food and the fun began. We returned with all the wonderful memories made there including the outstanding meal at the Cabernet Grill. One of the girls realized she had left a folder there with some very important papers. I sent an emailed them and got a response the same day, which was Sunday. I told them of the dilemma and thankfully it was found. Ross Burtwell was the gentleman who responded to my email and he not only found the folder, but mailed it back the same day by priority mail! Now that is service! Who does that these days? The Cotton Gin is all about others. From the cabins to the restaurant, they pay attention to every detail and go above and beyond to assure your satisfaction.
