Pretty much everything. Denny explained in detail what he and his crew were going to do to handle my drainage problem under our basement floor as ground water was rising up from under our foundation. We had experienced a quite heavy rains directly after being hit with roughly seven to 10 ( maybe 12 inches of snow in about 12 hours. Then the heavy rains came and dropped at least 4 to 6 inches of rain on top of the snow. Well, we live in an area called Still-meadow. Apparently, Still-meadow can be loosely translated to running water under land ( apparently it is an Native American saying to basically say in an ornate way, "Hey, you live on a a, "Flood Plain", or in our case a network of small natural springs. We hired Cottrell Basement Waterproofing (Dennis Cottrell Jr ) to install an egress window in our new home. First of all I can't believe this man/company got so many good reviews after dealing with him for a short period of time. Did he inherit this company from his dad and then run it into the ground? I should have seen the red flag when he was so pushy to start and every other contractor I called couldn't get to us for 3-12 months. He was trying to get me to write him a check for the job even before we settled on our new house. He was extremely unprofessional from the beginning, sending me weird photos of his vacation, but I over looked it because we needed an egress window to make a 4th bedroom in our new house asap. We signed the contract May 12th and gave him a 30% deposit of $1800. Upon looking at the contract my husband immediately noticed some things that were not checked off that should be done to install an egress window properly like installing a lentil. When he asked Dennis about it he said he didn't check them off because he doesn't want the township inspecting that part, that it would just be a headache for us. Like he was doing us a favor. We applied for permits for the window and after he cashed our check he told us he is going to start without permits and if we have a problem with that that is going to be a problem and he may not do our job. He said he works without permits all the time. He's also texted us some absolutely ridiculous things. Also the fact that he was leaving out information so that certain parts wouldn't be inspected is huge red flag. If he was doing proper work why would there be a problem with inspections afterwards? Cutting a substantial sized hole in a foundation is a pretty big deal. He said he was getting a lot of backlash from us asking about permits and he would let us know the day before our job was supposed to start if he was going to show up or not and that if he canceled he would get our deposit money (that we gave him 2 weeks ago) back to us in six months(which I have 0 faith in). It's like he was almost trying to bully us into letting him do the job because he's hard up for money. He reiterated how it is paramount to put his company's financial needs first. He has put us in a really bad situation with the township. Unfortunately at this point I now decided to do more research on him than just Google and Facebook reviews. I found that he's had another lawsuit from a customer which he is still failing to pay back. But most importantly I found out he is actually NOT currently a licensed contractor with the state of Pennsylvania, that license expired YEARS ago. He said that there must be a "miscommunication" within the Attorney General's office and it's absurd that I would say that he's not licensed. This is all public info. At this point he is not responding to any of our emails, texts, or calls regarding repaying us our $1800 deposit. His story about how long he's been working and what kind of work he will do changed every time we talked to him. We have caught him in numerous contradicting statements and lies. I think he is a scam artist. Beware. After all of this he sent a text eluding to the fact that we should stay on his schedule. Um, no thanks. I'm just so glad he actually didn't touch our house. If the way he runs his business and his lack of Integrity is any indication of how the actual work would go it would be a complete disaster. I just want our $1800 deposit money back. read more

The communication and quality of business with this company is extremely poor. I would absolutely NOT recommend them to anyone I know. The first day I called Denny he got back to me right away, and told me what he thought the problem was, great. Then he said he would come to my house, but I would need to sign a binding contract for the work. This made me a little nervous considering he hadn't even seen my house yet, but I went ahead. He came the next morning and evaluated the situation and had me sign the contract with my credit card info immediately for the EZ Breathe System. I was still trusting that he was the expert at this point. He told me it would take about a week for the system to come in and then he could install it afterwards. I told him I would be out of town when the system would be coming in, so I was fine with waiting until the week after for installation, which he agreed to also. Here it was that following week on Monday evening and I had not heard from him about installation. I left a voicemail that evening and received a text that he was having a "mechanical failure" and wouldn't be able to install it until the following Monday-- did not have the common courtesy to call me back. Once again here it was the following Monday morning and I had not heard from him about when installation would be, I again had to be the one to initiate communication to ask. After I had just worked a 13 hour night shift, Denny said installation would be at 11AM that day. I decided to stay awake and wait for that to happen, no one showed up at my house until 1PM without any communication what so ever that they would be late. They were completely unprepared that afternoon and left my house twice to "go get parts". If this is a system you routinely install, how do you not know what parts you need?? I was also initially told this installation was "easy" and would only take about an hour and a half to install. It took the two women 4+ hours that evening and they said they would have to come back later to finish. In my contract, it is checked off that I would have the mold fogging completed. So, when I asked about that, apparently that had to be set up at a different time (not to my knowledge) ...and that myself and my pets would need to be out of the house (also not to my knowledge). My husband called Denny that night to ask questions about the system and about the overall work that had been completed. There was an extra hole drilled into the side of the outside of the house that was not utilized. The brackets on the system were drilled in too far and were cracked. Additionally, they did not hard wire the system into our breaker box. The power cord for the system was the only thing utilized, which was not long enough, so the power cord was left dangling from the power outlet, potentially leaving us in a dangerous situation. My husband called three separate times and left three voicemails. Denny once again did not have the decency to return the phone calls to address these concerns, instead we received a text saying something along the lines of "today was no indication of the quality of work we do, it was a cluster". Well Denny, I can tell you that day was indeed the quality of work you and your company perform because you never fixed the issue and couldn't call us back. The mold fogging was still never completed to this day. The job was never fully completed, and this is completely unacceptable. We still have not received any communication from Denny or any sort of apology for the absolute mess of a situation this was. I was trying to support a local business and this was incredibly disappointing. read more

I had called on a Friday morning about water in my basement, Denny came out right away and instead of selling me services I did not need he diagnosed my issue and saved me thousands of dollars that I would have spent for the other guys to just figure out where the water was coming from. Denny was very thorough in explaining his assessment of our water issue so that we could understand what was happening and how he could help to remedy it. There was a wait in the schedule due to other jobs and the circumstances, and then very wet rainy weather, but he kept us informed of this. Once our job was started it was amazing how extremely hard his team worked, and they all worked well together too! They respected our home and went to great lengths to keep it as clean as possible, and were very careful paying great attention to detail as if they were working on their own homes. We were kept informed each step of the way and things were explained clearly. They were very prompt, showed up on time, and communicated well with each other too. They all went above and beyond to help us with our specific situation. The team was very courteous and friendly, even with our dog! They cleaned up and put things back in an orderly fashion too. Although we were getting tired of water streaming into our basement after every hard rain, we were planning to wait due the cost. But the problem was getting worse with the harder-than-usual rainstorms we were having this year. And we knew the water behind the walls was causing unseen damage. So we decided to get some quotes just to budget ahead. We were referred to Cottrell by a friend who was thrilled with their work, and were pleasantly that the coast was low enough that we could afford the to get the work done this year. A crew of about eight finished the job in only nine hours. We are very happy with a newly waterproofed basement and with two-pump system which runs so quietly that we originally thought it was malfunctioning. Even though they started a day later then expected they still finished the job on time.
