I recently purchased a formal dress from David's Bridal to wear for two upcoming weddings plus various other fancy events that may pop up in the future. The dress needed some serious work: the back needed to be taken in quite a bit, as did the sleeves around the shoulders. Alterations at David's Bridal are CRAZY expensive (a friend told me that's how they rope in most of their money), so there was no way I was getting it done there. This is the only place near me that offers tailoring that I know of, so I brought my dress here and just hoped beyond hope the alterations wouldn't cost a fortune; almost the entire top of the dress is lace. The tailor (I never got his name; I know, shameful!) had me put on the dress and put me in front of the mirror to see what needed work. He only put one bobby pin in the dress and only seemed to measure one side; it worried me, but he seemed to know what he was doing, so I mustered up enough trust to leave me dress in his hands (pun totally intended). Five days later, I went in to pick it up. The gentleman recognized me immediately, smiled, grabbed my dress, told me to wait, and disappeared into the back of the place. He returned five minutes later with my dress perfectly pressed. The alterations plus the press only cost me $25, far, far less than what David's Bridal would charge. Later on at home, I put on the dress, and WOW. The alterations were absolutely perfect. My dress-which used to hang on my shoulders and back-now fit like a glove. A family member then told me they had had work done by him years ago; he's been in the business forever and knows his stuff. That clearly showed. If you need tailoring that's not super expensive, stop by here if you can. You won't regret it.

So I decided to check other options. Two friends of ours told me to go here when I told them of my conundrum. Felix cheerfully took a pair of new Florsheims, and in a day, they were sized, comfortable, and shined with a good measure of wax (good for touch-ups). He only charged $10. I tipped him $5 -- and I still saved $20 over the cost charged by the other guy. On my next visit, I gave him a pair of $700 Italian loafers for the same treatment, and also gave him a well-used pair of light loafers that had a gap in the sole. He offered to fix the old loafers, but showed me a hole that he said would probably re-emerge because they'd been stretched too much. It was with a pang that I threw them away. I handed him ten dollars and told him I'm glad he didn't waste his time, or my money. Oh, the expensive loafers came out really, really nicely. Next up are a pair of winter boots from Ralph Lauren that need some saddle soap before I put 'em away for next year. Go here (the door's always locked so you must ring the bell). Your feet will thank you!

They are the only shoe repair business in the state that I am aware of and it reminds me of the past when shoes were of the best quality and we always brought our shoes and other leather goods to be repaired, not cheap shoes thrown out and have to buy another pair of much less quality.
