I had a pair of shoes I purchased online, quite pricey but a revelation as to how comfortable and just all around great they were. Put me off DSW forever. Then they began to squeak, loudly. Rendered them unwearable. Brought them to another gentlemen who despite his valiant efforts, he did not tame the squeak. After seeing them languish in my closet I gave this guy his chance. Picked them up four days later, polished and squeak free. He explained exactly what the issue was and why someone may have missed it. In fact because I mentioned a fix had been attempted before he thought beyond the standard efforts and found that the leather layers under the heel weren't glued. $20 Three good pairs of shoes and a good shoe guy and you are good for many years. I found the good shoe guy. Incidentally while I was there a gent came in with some Doc Martin's or something. He recommended trying to glue the heel back on with Gorilla Glue first, then he'd give it go, but it would require putting on new soles. I know some have been dismayed as to what work someone will accept or not. It really is a crap shoot, because sometimes its not worth working on crap. read more

Charismatic, personable, talented...just a few words that come to mind when I think of Joe's Shoe Service. The owner is not only one of the friendliest people you will ever meet, he is incredibly skilled. Being a "people" person myself, I really value owners that make it a point to genuinely ask how their customers are doing, and really get to know them. The first time I visited his store was actually because my then puppy had chewed right through the leather handle of a bag I had just received as a gift. He fixed it and it looked as good as new for $10. Over the last few years, he has brought life back to several pairs of shoes for me, a service I wish I knew about in college! Boy were all those nights at the bar (and those walks home!!) rough on my shoes...and they usually ended up in the trash after a year or so. Whether your shoes need a-fixing, you broke a zipper, or your dog ruined something else in your home, Joe's Shoe Service is the place to go! I've lived in Manchester area for 11 years and I have been going to Joe's Shoe Service pretty much that whole time. Joe had a smaller store front a few doors down, and business must be good, because he moved to a bigger and brighter location in the same plaza. Many of my friends are surprised when I tell them to take their bags/shoes/belts to a cobbler. They look at me like I'm crazy. I tell them for under $10 they can pretty much get their favorite shoes or accessory fixed and they're hooked just like me. Joe has repaired/brought back to life many of my shoes. If he can't fix them, then it's time for a new pair. Joe is always pleasant, professional, and he does great work. I cannot recommend him highly enough. If you don't want to blow money on new shoes and accessories just because you've worn out your stuff from wear, Joe's your man. read more

Nice to see an old fashioned business like a shoe shop thriving in this economy. Despite the fact that Joe is located in a sad strip mall in a declining commercial town, his small business is thriving as good as any possibly could. I was referred to Joe's by the local hockey arena. Indeed, Joe will apparently fix anything that can be sewn back together, hockey equipment included! I had three trouble spots on various pieces of equipment, and the seams he put on there appear professional and strong. We shall see just how strong in the months to come. $20 was my total, a very reasonable price indeed for this type of repair. Only knock is the turnaround time, which was six days... Perhaps next time I'll ask if he can provide quicker service. Joe is a very nice guy, so I'm sure he'd be willing to try if you need your items in a pinch. read more

Big store, brightly lit. Joe however refused to repair boot heels that Gino (now closed) in Glastonbury would repair in a week. Warning- Joe picked up first boot, and he snapped the sole in half and proceeded to do the same to second boot. Saying Opps, I can't fix. These had been my favorite boots from Talbots that got compliments at every wearing. read more

Great business. I have gone here a few times for various reasons. First being to get a shoe polish for a unique colored pair of leather boots I had just purchased. Let me say that this shop has an extensive selection of shoe polishes, waxes, and creams. So many different brands, varieties, and colors. All of which are priced very fairly. I have also gotten new heels on leather boots here and they came out great. They were ready on time and looked good as new. Again, the price seemed fair. I needed to have 5 pair of shoes shined so I brought in 3 pair the first go around. When I returned a few days later to pick them up I realized that I had forgotten to grab my wallet off my desk (bad back)! I went in to see if I could use my phone to Samsung pay but instead I was told to simply pay the next time I dropped on the other 2 pair of shoes. What!?! True old school customer service is just something you don't see much in today's world. I've lived in the South Windsor area (currently Coventry) for over 30 years now and have been doing business with Joe for all of that time. If his smiles could be packaged and sold for a buck a piece, he'd be a millionaire. Such a good man. His shop is bright, welcoming and stocked with more shoe accoutrements than you could find anywhere else. Frustrated, I looked for another shoemaker in town and found Nick's shoe repair. The gentleman there said he could fix them no problem. They were repaired, properly replace, and reinforced in a day. This review is long overdue, but have a moment now, as i LOOK FOR ANOTHER SHOE REPAIR SHOP, to write about my experience. I brought in about 10 pair of shoes for tips, based on their outstanding reviews (I truly think Joe has a lot of friends who fill out the surveys to get best shoe repair in state). The shop is only open during the week, so no weekend drops or pick ups which is really inconvenient. He put nails in my tips, but when I wore the shoes, most of the pins came out of either one or both of the pairs of shoes. It cost me 12 bucks just for those pins that didn't stay. There was no extra service done on the shoes (like a quick polish) that most of the shoemakers I've gone to do for free. I didn't bring them back because the place is in Manchester and I live 1/2 hour away and I couldn't get in their shop during the week. I used to work in Hartford and went to a shoemaker on Asylum who was excellent but passed away. Now I'm in search of that shoemaker who goes the extra mile who is open on the weekends and has reasonable prices. I'm not sure why he's got such great reviews, unless he goes above and beyond for his old customers. If he was great, I'd go out of my way to get there. It just wasn't my experience, unfortunately. read more
