Not to be confused with the currently operating school in Hingham called Derby Academy, Old Derby…read moreAcademy is the headquarters for the Hingham Historical Society. Old Derby was the original school the newer one sprung from, started by Madame Sarah Derby in the 1700s. The Federal style building has an illustrious and interesting history. I have weddings on the brain having just been to a great one this past weekend. So it got me to remembering my own wedding which was held here. We took a walk around the property this weekend and were reminded of what a great spot this is. This is a beautiful venue with a pretty not to mention historic ballroom which leads to a lovely outdoor garden. The good news for us, which I know might not be for everyone, is that you are just renting the space and so you can hire whomever you would like to create the right kind of celebration for you. This means you hire your own caterer. There is a full kitchen on the premises for the caterers to use. With this kind of arrangement we could make sure the food was exactly what we wanted it to be, made by chefs we trusted. This also means you are not limited to the choices other venues hold you to. You're not subject to the pricing whims of venues that charge exorbitantly for their bar service. The caterer we chose provided bar service (mixer, sodas, etc.) and the bartenders but we supplied all the alcohol. Buying your own alcohol is a not only a money saver but allows you to personally select the kinds of wines and other liquors that you want to see served. My personal pet peeve is being invited to an event like a wedding and having to contend with a cash bar. Remember: you are inviting guests to your celebration. They shouldn't have to pay for anything unless it's a charity benefit. It's no different in my mind than having guests to your home. Enough on the lectures. This is a great place to host your wedding or any special party in which you want a unique and interesting venue. If you are interested in an historical setting and want to really have a more open canvas of options in which to personally design the details of your event, this might be the spot for you.

Raffael's at South Shore Country Club delivered on everything! It is such a beautiful venue and the staff is fantastic! They offer an incredible value as a venue and went out of their way to provide services for us that other venues would have charged an arm and a leg for. I hear from someone new everyday how incredible the food was and how great the staff were - that is was the best wedding they have ever been to. Terese was extremely helpful throughout the planning of the event and the day itself. I really couldn't have pulled this wedding together without her! She is one of the most organized, professional and creative people I have ever had the pleasure to work with! Terese made every detail of our wedding exactly as we wanted, and she even surpassed our expectations. She is a joy to work with and very reasonable. She allows you to customize your wedding according to your budget. I can't say enough good things about her! She made our wedding ceremony so easy and stress free. Absolutely no complaints at all, they made for a smooth and successful event at a great price.

Envision an overweight man with a poorly dyed, Costanza-like head of hair. He is a HORRIBLE employee. Almost as bad, is having to feign attention to Frank as he feebly attempts to conjure the appropriate English words. You would think Black Rock would want a better face to greet the beloved members/guests. Also, don't try to sell your Black Rock house without having to go through Midge Durgin. A great friend of mine negotiated the return of his membership fees ($50,000) by letting Midge represent him in the sale of their house. (Those $1k plus monthly HOAs are a tough sell with the food they serve) Being the membership manager entitles her to brokerage fees that I genuinely doubt she'd yield without holding the keys to the Black Rock Golf Membership. Good for her, bad for you! Buyer beware!

Quite simply put, it's got the three things every New Englander loves: - Vaulted ceilings and exposed wood beams - Proficient bartenders who hand-smash fruit before muddling your Old Fashioned garnish. - Bill Belichick. Yes, THE Bill Belichick. He lives here, plays golf here and can most likely be found buttering his bread here. The only thing missing is the cheesy souvenir sold from the gift shop: "Belichick fattened up his toast this morning, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt." $28, no refunds.
