It was great to see it a buzz with a large family gathering bumping good tunes, individuals escaping the heat in a similar fashion to myself, and folks taking pictures. It's cool to see the city continue to invest into this park with the pickle ball courts and upgrades being done for the pavilion. I need to come back to get some time on those pickle ball courts!

This park has both the WWII Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. As the day nears for Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, that is what we should all do. Remember. Remember those that fought and died for us so we can live free and sleep in our beds peacefully at night. Whether you have a relative or friend who died in a war, or died serving in our nation's military, or you don't. Every American has the obligation to remember those who died. It is only because of their ultimate sacrifice that we, as Americans, have the freedoms we have today. So, when you go visit Jastro Park, or just drive by, remember our men and women who died for us. We weren't sure what to expect, but we absolutely LOVE Game day sports! The atmosphere is great, we have a wonderful coach, and they are big on instilling values and teamwork in the boys. My son has improved his skills a lot, made friends, and is already asking me to sign him up for another season! It's very comfortable as well- plenty of chairs and space for parents to hangout and watch the practice, either on the court or in the quieter area off the courts. They have a food bar with a variety of items to order, tables to sit at, and vending machines. The basketball team practices twice a week- once on Mondays with everyone (split into different groups each week, so all the kids eventually get to know each other a little), and then an independent team practice another day of the week. I love the way they organize this, because come game day, most of the boys have already practiced with each other during the week (on the opposing team they play). At the end of the day, it feels like one everyone is on one big team here. I have nothing bad to say about this place overall.. however there is one coach I have heard drop the F bomb several times (not our coach), and I would love to see him clean up his speech. Anyway- my son loves it here and wishes he could come more than twice a week. I'm really glad we found this place! Shout out to coach Henry- he is awesome with the boys and goes above and beyond to help out, say hi to parents, and pep talk the boys. If you're looking for a sports place for your kids, this is the place! Bonus points for being a vendor for Heartland charter school!

Standard Park's 16.5 acres stretches from E MInner Ave to Ferguson Ave along the West side of Doyle…read morejust to the East of Standard Elementary School. There is street side parking along E. Minner, close to the baseball diamond and picnic shelters. The baseball diamond comes complete with lights, two dugouts, and bleachers behind home plate. There is a small building just West of it which appears to be a concession stand, so I am going to assume that there is either a little league or NOR team that plays here. The setup seems quite elaborate compared to the baseball facilities at most city parks. Just East of the baseball diamond is a covered picnic shelter shading a number of individual picnic tables with a capacity of 80 people and two charcoal grills nearby. You can reserve this picnic shelter for private use by contacting the NOR Parks & Recreation District at 391-2020 and completing an application which can be downloaded here http://norfun.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/FR-100-Use-of-Facility-Online-Packet.pdf The cost is $15 per hour with a 3 hour minimum reservation. There were two other individual picnic tables in the park, but neither had a grill located near them. At first there didn't appear to be public restrooms at this park, but just as I was leaving I saw a building tucked back behind the baseball diamond where there were mens and womens restroom. The women's restroom had 3 stalls, one with a clogged toilet and two with no toilet paper. The water at the sinks works, but there is no soap. There are two play structures one for the younger set and a larger one for older children. THere are plenty of single seating benches near both play structures for parents to sit and watch their kids. I saw a basketball hoop where you could play half court, and there was plenty of open grassy area suitable for a variety of sports. This is not a bad little park, and is probably a lifesaver if you live in the dale and have small children.

That being said, I've been here several times around dusk to watch roller derby and while I certainly didn't feel comfortable walking to the restrooms by myself, nobody approached me or did anything else to earn my distrust. There were some people who appeared to be transients wandering about, but they weren't approaching me or the playing children. This is actually a pretty nice park. There is a water park area/play area near the street. The water elements are colorful and whimsical. Even I would love to run through these water features! I don't know when the water gets turned on (particularly during this era of the drought) but it looks pretty nice an must be popular with local families trying to keep cool in that hot Bakersfield summer sun. There are two outdoor basketball courts just on the North side of the parking lot. They seem to be in pretty good shape and there are always people using them to shoot some hoops whenever I'm there in the evenings. There are two large areas, on either side of restrooms, with play equipment and swings. The play equipment is in good shape and seems to always be covered with happy children. There are swings in each area for older kids and some that are perfect for toddlers. The restrooms can be hit or miss. Sometimes when I come they are clean and have toilet paper and sometimes when I come the toilets are stopped up and the toilet paper is lacking (on my last visits, two of the four toilets were backed up and the other two didn't have toilet paper - on the previous visit they were all fine). I don't remember there ever being sufficient soap so I highly recommend bringing your own wipes. There are plenty of picnic tables in the nearby grass, and there are families EVERYWHERE enjoying this park. And there is quite a bit of grass to run and play on. There is a large, covered, enclosed arena where I come, periodically, to watch teams square off against each other in flat track roller derby. It is the home court of Derby Revolution of Bakersfield. I really enjoy watching the games here, and will return when their season starts again next September.
