This Big 5 on Ming Avenue has some of the friendliest staff in town. Every time you walk in, someone greets you and checks if you need help while you're looking through the displays, without bugging. Right now, a lot of the stuff is up to 70% off. The discounted shoe section is big right now after the holidays. It's a reliable spot when im looking for sports cards or hot wheels. The only real downside is the pricing. When you compare it to the Big 5 on the east side, this location is noticeably higher on many items, so you trade a bit of extra cost for equal service and similar convenience. We love coming here when we don't wanna pay Dick's Sporting Goods prices. They always have a pretty good selection of all the sports equipment. Been coming to this location for years and never had a bad experience! I always get my work boots here! They always fit perfect and don't break the bank! The boots are cheap enough that I can buy two pairs for the price of one compared to other stores! There are definitely a strange mix of items here, almost like a crazy mini Walmart! Sometimes things are kinda just thrown around making it hard to walk the isles, but kinda fun looking and stepping around as well! Staff is always helpful! Especially those in the shoe section! I was going camping and in need of a cot, so I stopped at big five and purchased a Coleman cot, only to find out once upon arriving at my campground that the two end bars were missing! upon further inspection i found that the bag it came in was torn! I believe someone returned the cot and the the staff didn't inspect it to assure that all the parts were in place. read more

Prior to Action Sports, Sports Chalet (RIP), and others, there was Big 5. From guns to pool floaties, you could find just about any outdoor item. I can count on my hand how many times I've been to a Big 5 and most of them were for river or pool floaties. Big 5 has a large selection of River Rat tubes for floating down the river. **SIDE NOTE: Do NOT float down the Kern River this year! The water frigid and fast flowing. Areas where it may appear calm have swift undercurrents. 8 people have died in the last few months. Don't be a victim! Swim in a lake, or better yet, a pool! I came here specifically looking for the inflatable bull. It was sold out on Amazon and other online retailers. A few select third party retailers were selling it for over $100, but I was able to locate it on the Big 5 website, tracking it down to this location. With plenty to choose from I was able to score this awesome 4th of July party feature for around $50. The rest of the store is a jumbled mess of stuff. Everything seemed haphazardly placed. Quite a few items, like their tennis racquets, were dusty and appeared to have been sitting for some time. There was only one employee and she was manning the 1 register. Big 5, while helpful for last minute purchases, is a business I would guess won't be around for long. read more

My wife and I visited the Bakersfield location on 12/31/21 and purchased 8 pairs of running shoes. We were extremely impressed with the fast and friendly service rendered in the shoe department. We asked for multiple shoes in various sizes and the two people who helped us were tireless and helpful - always with a smile! We tried to leave a cash tip But we're told it was not permitted. I started working out and I no nothing about gym type clothing. I walked in clueless. However, two cashiers: Daisy & Shanice helped me tremendously! I always forget about Big 5. But when my husband wanted a long rifle and was unsuccessful in finding one at a decent price at the gun show he checked the price here and Viola here was one exactly like he was looking for and for a lot less than the prices at the gun show. Unfortunately they had other rifles that were on his wish list at great prices and seemed to finagle one of those too. Funny how that happens, I thought that only happens when I go shoe shopping?? The only problem with them is it is painfully slow going to do the paperwork, I know you're buying a gun but the guy had a million interruptions and it was right out in front of God and everyone to see not much privacy. Then I wanted a drone that was on sale for my grandson for Christmas and they were out. Of course the only thing he wanted from us, but they did call around and found one at their Paso Robles store since I had to go to the beach the next day I'd swing by and pick it up. read more

I went to this location to get work boots that were on sale and was helped by two guys. One guy looked new, he went in the back to find my shoe size, the other guy Juan always checked if I needed help or if the other employee was helping me already. This location didnt have my size, however Juan stated they had another location on Mt. Vernon East Side area and could call to check if they had my size since the deal was ending that day. I proceeded to follow him to the register by guns area and he called the other store and spoke to a young girl, they had one in my size! It happened to be the last one in stock, Juan had the girl at the other store hold my size until I got there, he even showed me the boot on computer screen to ensure it was the correct one. That was amazing customer service on both ends. Only reason I'm giving this four stars is because I had to travel to the east side at night. Not the best area to be in, but in essence the girl at other store had my boots ready for pick up. Great job to Juan for the customer service, he went above and beyond to help with my need and make a sale for Big 5. read more

Is this place still open? They've been at this location for as long as I can remember. Big 5 Sporting Goods is not my first choice for my sporting good needs. Reason being that I have not had pleasant experiences over the years. Customer service had not been very good, and the shop was always so cluttered. Perhaps, they are doing better now. After all, they are still in business. So they must be doing something right. Whatever the case may be, they will continue to be my last resort. read more

I went in here to buy some early gifts for Christmas. There is a lot of gear in here. I used to come here when my children were younger. The store is still cluttered, and it can be tough to find help. But prices are decent, if you have some extra time you may want to check it out. Very disappointed with the store today went in looking for some gym stuff ran into a sign that clearly read 18oz stainless steel under armor water bottle 14.99 when I took it to the counter they said it was 39.99 when I told the rep about the sign she asked over associates about it and they clearly had no idea. So when they pulled the sign off and poked at it they still were shocked about the price and she just told me it was not the right bottle... the worst part is I took about 10 mins looking at all the different bottles before just to make sure I was right about the specific model of the bottle.. so very unhappy with the service and false advertising and more importantly the fact that they didn't even try to help me find the right bottle or figure it out... read more

Big 5 stinks. Went in for advertised special on running shoes. Did not have my size. They said I could go to the other store they did not check to see iif they were in stock at the other store I had to do the thinking for them and tell them to check on the computer they would have wasted my time . Then they said they had them in tehachipi and Santa Clarita , nice like I want to drive 2.5 hours for something they should have had in stock because it was an advertised special. Then I asked if I could order the shoes in my size they said it would take a month or more . They did not even tell me I could order online and get free shipping they are clueless and every time I go there there are employees standing around and talking and ignoring customers. It's been a few years since I been to Big 5. I walked in, no one welcomes me in. I walk to the back to the shoe area. The shoe guy helps me out. I walk up to the register. Long line but it took about 7 mins to get to the cash register. Store size is big. Customer service is not great. read more

Since we live on the east side, we usually go to the one on our side of town. But, we were in the area and looking for something. This store seems smaller than the one on the east side but with the same amount of stuff. It is a little crowded; I felt like I was bumping into something or someone as we walked around the store. They were really busy when we went. The staff is friendly enough; but not as friendly as the one on the east side. We couldn't find what we were looking for and couldn't find someone to help us, so we left. Next time, we will just go to the one on our side of town. read more

Horrible selection. I called ahead of time and asked if they had ladies hiking apparel. They said they had some. When I got there I could barely walk around because all of the fixtures were jammed so close together. Also, there wasn't any women's hiking apparel. It was a wasted trip. read more
