Had a scone with jam, a latte and a flat white (I was there for a while), and was buzzing in no time. Thought the coffee drinks were good, the scone better and the space even better than that. Perfect amount of people and ambient noise. The decor is quaint and inviting. Servers were nice and helpful. All in all a great place to post up for a bit. Next time will come back and try the teas and maybe a cake.

This cute little find proves that you can still satisfy a cake craving without eggs and butter, and always with more than one option too- it's actually properly vegan friendly without just making a side effort. Manchester bees and loose leaf tea sum the place up nicely, the decor is cosy and charming, and the staff are wonderful. I'd champion this as a good date spot too, as you can actually hear those on your table. Plus, if you're on a date with someone who doesn't like tea, you probably shouldn't go on another one!

And North Star really lives up to its name by being a great spot not only to mooch around the shelves but to have a hunk of cake, a great cup of coffee and hone in on some of the most reliable wifi I've had the joy of experiencing. I popped in here with my mum before a quick trip to Khawaja Brothers and Morrison's, and boy were we glad we did. Slabs of amazing homemade cake, incredible salads of puy lentils, Mediterranean veg, sundried tomatoes, big wedges of vegetarian lasagne, giant salmon fishcakes... the choices here are endless. And all served with a warm smile and with the option of kick-ass coffee and Teapigs tea. Yes, they had me at Teapigs tea. And amazing greetings cards, randomly. The decor is really relaxing, the outside space plentiful, and despite being on one of the busies roads in South Manchester and near a petrol station it manages to maintain an ambience of calm. We indulged in the banana and coconut cake and Victoria sponge, and both were mindblowing. The coconut icing on the banana cake should be sold by the spoonful and the Victoria sandwich had fresh strawberries in the buttercream topping and utterly delicious jam in the middle. Oh and the cake dough didn't even harbour a hint of dryness. The prices are reasonable too, and that wifi I mentioned didn't falter once - even while I was outside on the patio. This is one star worthy of handprints in cement. It can even wear sunglasses indoors if it wishes. Basically in my book, it's so cool that it can do no wrong.

We ordered food at the bar, for some reason we couldn't offer jenga chips with steak - I'm really not sure why, the bartender kept saying something that it only goes with fish and chips, despite the menu saying otherwise. Oh well, ordered French fries instead. The food was nice, albeit our steak was cold, which probably means they didn't bring it straight away.

I checked out the menu and decided to order the poached egg and asparagus as a starter, which was very good! The egg yolk was runny and the asparagus was perfectly seasoned and cooked very well. My main course, the one I was most looking forward to, I was a little disappointed with. I ordered the lamb meatball tagliatelle and found the meatballs very dry and chewy. The sauce and the pasta were good, but the meatballs really let the dish down. I would recommend this place - as i found it excellent value for money. Just maybe i'll try a pizza next time!

Luckily, I was going on my own so could easily be sat at the window, which was a great view, and easily got served. So many people came in after me and couldn't be seated without a reservation. But the host was very lovely and gracious and people understood. Food wise I went for the shakshuka, it sounded nice, and it really was ... it was also EXTREMELY hot because it was served in cast iron and kept its heat. It was delicious. The toast was crispy, the tomatoes were tasty, chickpeas were crunchy and a nice addition, The added sausage was very delicious, the eggs were good although I would have preferred if they had some runny yolk but its almost impossible to get that with baked eggs. We got there a little early but as it was very quiet they seated us straight away. Despite the fact there were a lot of very good tables we were offered one in the middle of the restaurant. There was left over foods (quite big crumbs) all over my chair so we asked for a different table. The waitress again ignored all the nice tables and took us to another pretty average one. We immediately ordered drinks then had a good look at the menu. The format for Sunday brunch/lunch is an all you can eat starter buffet followed by a main and dessert that you order off the menu. The buffet has lots of great options on it. I had things like artichoke hearts, Caesar salad, couscous, Camembert, olives and some fantastic bread. There were also a lot of meat and fish options. After we finished our starters we still hadn't received our drinks and had to ask for them. Our waitress got confused and thought we wanted more drinks until we had to point out we still wanted our original drinks.... While we chose mains still no drinks appeared. We had to ask for the specials rather than being told about them. I ordered the lamb roast dinner and Dan went for the cooked breakfast. Then a good ten minutes later our waitress came over and asked what mains we wanted again - she obviously hadn't put them through yet. At this point I wandered back to the buffet and ordered some pancakes off the station at the end. They also do waffles! Amazing, I want this for the flat. The drinks were really good when they finally arrived - the Bloody Mary was great, very spicy and delicious. When the mains came they looked great. The breakfast comes with fries, steak, sausage, mushroom, black pudding, eggs and tomato. My roast dinner was good but I'd have liked mash as the roasties were a little dry and the veg was a bit over cooked. For dessert I ordered an ice cream sundae and Dan had the creme brûlée. The sundae was not good. The ice cream was melted and there was far too much cream on top. The cream was fairly tasteless and just sloppy so not pleasant. I sent it back. The bite I had of Dan's cream brûlée was good though. Some of the other staff seemed ok (although one waiter tried to give us a bottle of water when we asked for tap water - cheeky) but certainly our waitress was really struggling, we were told she was new. They took off one drink as compensation which was fine. A point to note here - they put a service charge on the bill. My pet hate in restaurants. We had not had good service and to have to ask them to then take the charge off didn't improve my overall experience. I can see why they are having to do 50% offers as overall based on today it wasn't an experience I'd rush back for. I do think that they could do better another day though and Dan really enjoyed his meal so we may return. Lots of small things they need to improve on. Hopefully they can.

Male moody boutique feel is perfect for a romantic drink with a special someone. The food from the SMOKE restaurant is delightful too but this is only a flying visit today sadly.
