We had a nice bite to eat here! Ceasar salads were good with crispy chicken. Between the three of us, we had the cherry peach crumble pie, the apple raisin crumble pie, and the apple pie. Well two stars infers that I've experienced better. That is true. Had breakfast. Two eggs, and three very thin slices of bacon. $5.00. Very plain. Very average. Nothing special. But for 5.00?? throw in another egg. What is the cost??? about .10?? Honestly, I'd been better of a McDonalds, with a sausage biscuit for $1.00 . With coffee, about $7.00. This is a place local's like to recommend and it has been around a long time so I think it gets a star or two for the nostalgia factor. Washington Mo is a hidden gem of a town with outstanding restaurants and shops, overlooking the Missouri River. Cowans is one of those homespun restaurants, that I don't normally frequent. And normally I am not a giant fan of pie. But being here, it seemed like the thing to try. So I got the French Silk. Best pie ever. Wow. And to top it all off, when they gave me my change back, it was in the form of an old silver quarter. That has happened to me only one other time. So the verdict is that Cowans is awesome for pie... and lucky for change. read more

I sat at the riverside parking lot to sit and read the reviews of all the eateries in Downtown Washington.I had been to Landmark several times before and loved their outside dinner venue and live band. But the band wasn't playing at 3 on a Sun. So I chose Cowan's. First since there is only one of me she puts me at a side table. The decor was cozy with the antiques on store overhead and gingham curtains. There is no pie on the menu so I order off the board. They only have peach and cherry even though they advertised all kinds, I order peach and coffee. There is a hair in my pie. I thought to report it n then decide to be nice n it can happen to anyone. I am not finished with my pie and she tried to pick up my bill payment. When I look at her in surprise she says oops I thought that was your card. It was a dedication placard for someone who died that had been on the table for years. I am shocked when I look at the bill$5.69 for a piece of pie and with the coffee 8.61. Drive thirty more miles to the Cuba Bakery and you can buy a whole pie for $9. This is the first time in my life I did not leave a tip. This waitress and or establishment need a wake up call. read more

This place is really cute and feels like a laid back, country restaurant. The waitress was so sweet, and we were given wonderful service. I also love the location because it's really close to the river. My dad and I loved their fried chicken! The skin was crisp and the meat was very juicy...all around very flavorful fried chicken. I didn't try the pies, but they looked great. My parents have been back since we first went and really enjoyed it. It's a long drive so we don't go as often as I'd like to. Just because I gave it a four star doesn't mean there was anything wrong with this place...I simply try to reserve 5 stars for places that just totally blow me away. I was taken here by some friends who live in town. I got the blackberry pie. It was one of the best pieces of blackberry pie I've ever had. The filling was done just right; perfect amount of fruit, without the taste of overpowered sugar. The crust was also fresh and sweet. This little gem is in downtown Washington, Missouri. I went with a friend and stopped in for breakfast. It was delicious. They have many breakfast options as well as lunch items. The prices are moderate and the serving portions are generous. Afterwards we walked around the historic downtown area and really enjoyed the little shops and atmosphere. Been going to this place for years. I love the food and the atmosphere. They have raised the prices since the renovation, so it isn't the same awesome bang for your buck that it once was. However, I feel the prices are on par with the servings that you get. I have never had an impolite server and the staff has always been polite. read more

Pretty much your basic run of the mill diner. Popular cause it's the only diner open in the area for breakfast. The decor is .....um.......strange? Every freaking inch of the wall was taken up by Christmas decorations. I mean every single inch. With the exception of the one wall that has the history/timeline of the Cowan Enterprise and how it began. The waitress was friendly, the food was alright. Nothing to write home about. There was however some entertainment about 4 rows behind me with some guy who was either drunk or just started drinking at like 9am. He wouldn't stfu. I seriously wanted to punch him in the face. Service was amazingly bad. Waited 30+ minutes for our food. Food was okay, not great but decent. They are famous for their pies, I wouldn't know. Ordered pie and it never showed up. I paid my bill and the pie was almost $5, sat and waited and waited for the pie. It never appeared, even though the waitress came by and said "I need to bring you your pie." Finally we had to leave. I won't be back and wouldn't recommend Cowan's to anyone unless the have more than an hour and a half to spend for lunch. read more

Cowan's is a cute restaurant in my hometown. It's very homey, and the waitresses are usually very nice. If I am ever craving breakfast, I go to Cowan's. Honestly, that and the pies are the best things about this place. Lunch is okay, but why even have that when you can choose breakfast? They have sausage links, which i LOVE. We've been here about 50 times over the years. Their pies are not that good. Honestly, sugar fire has better pies. New owners bought the place.. they own marquardts Landing, which has far better food. Depending on which staff you receive for service at Cowan's, your experience will drastically vary one visit to the next.... we know whom to request and we always tip well. In my opinion, if you took away the nostalgia, if this place were new, it would go out of business, the food is good , but varies depending on what you get. Keep it simple and you'll be fine. Meatloaf, hamburgers, pancakes, etc. anything beyond will likely disappoint. I'm rooting for this place,,but it has gone downhill over the years and their pies frankly have never been particularly that good. I don't know why people rave about the pies. With sugar fire in town, this place had better step it up in my opinion. They won't last long term just on pies. the old owners lost their passion for the place and worked lots of hours. The new owners are rarely onsite, from what I've heard. They need to be, to watch what's going on. the service can be downright abysmal if you get a bad waitress or waiter.
